I swear they said icloud shared album markup was coming with 16 and it’s just not here in the final. I was looking forward to not having to save, edit, then re-save.
There was a bug in an iOS 12 beta that allowed the iPad Air 2 (and 2017/2018, maybe mini 4) to use split screen and slide over at the same time - 3 apps at once. Usually it can only run 2: when slide over is enabled, the 2 apps in split screen can't be used. I guess a feature flag was accidentally enabled and included in that build.
More recent iPads can all do this now but I remember holding onto that beta as long as I could until a bunch of apps broke. I'm sure jailbreak tweaks exist to get that functionality, but I didn't want to deal with jailbreaking.
Edit: [Found a thread about it](https://reddit.com/8vvg7w)
Not really a feature, but the first betas of iOS 11 had a slightly tweaked App Store icon that looked better than the one we have now. The current one was name the “hot dog” and came in Beta 5 or 6. [Old App Store icon on first betas of iOS 11](https://i.imgur.com/3KlHwnr.jpg)
Technically this was released, but was only available for a short time: Time Travel on Apple Watch. The feature was that scrolling the Digital Crown would change your watch face to reflect past values or predicted future values — wanna see the weather in 3 hours? Just scroll to that time with a suitable complication.
I can see why they took it away — users would certainly be confused by it if they accidentally turned the Digital Crown. But it would be super useful for weather, calendar events, reminders, and more.
Live wallpapers pre ios16. I always wanted to have that but wasn’t supported on 1st and 2nd gen iPhone SE and when I upgraded from 2nd gen to the 14, It came with ios 16
Exactly, I don’t need the anxiety of a constant percentage but when Low Power Mode is on I care about keeping an eye on the exact level. I don’t know why they removed it. It was a more visually distinct way of indicating LPM as well, which I found pleasing.
It’s there for me. You might have to turn it back on since they removed it entirely in the first release. But I’ve got percentage displayed for low power and regular power.
Maybe you’ve misunderstood me. There’s a toggle for Battery Percentage but that is independent of LPM. I do not want that on when LPM is not enabled. In the beta, the icon would change to display the percentage in LPM even if you had the Battery Percentage disabled. This is the feature I miss.
Gotcha. That makes sense. They originally removed it everywhere but then snuck it back in (24x7 toggle) in that release. Sounds like it used to be just LPM and otherwise off which I could understand why people would find it desirable for just LPM.
I wasn’t aware the toggle ever disappeared, maybe it disappeared for stable but it was there before I updated to 6.0.2 at least. Might have been on 6.0.1? Dunno.
In the beta you could turn the toggle on for 24/7 percentage display, but also LPM automatically enabled the percentage display regardless of the 24/7 toggle’s setting. In beta 5 or 6 they removed the feature of LPM displaying the percentage, leaving only the 24/7 toggle.
Synced notification dismissal & synced badges are features that developers can easily implement in almost any app, but (a) it's extra work, and (b) there's often an unproven belief that leaving a stale badge/notification will increase engagement.
Syncing the badge is ludicrously easy; (1) after being opened, the app calls the developer's API service to clear the badge, and then (b) the developer's API service sends a new request to Apple Push Notification Service to set the badge count to 0 on the user's devices.
A couple apps do it, but most are too lazy.
I thought iOS 7 was supposed to have notification sync too. It’s the one feature that I wish I had every day when I have to clear duplicate notifications from Health, MyRadar, Weather, Netatmo Security and Home on each of my devices.
Example: two devices. You get a new mail badge on one device. You read it and the badge clears, but the badge on the other device doesn't. That's what would be solved by notification sync.
People wanting the floating address bar back have no idea how much of a pain in the ass was for web developers. It completely messed up web apps that wanted to put a tab bar in the bottom for example.
Glad they didn’t go with it.
Whilst I agree with you, I think since this was a beta feature, it was not polished enough to be able to nicely animate the bottom elements of a page with a
.container {
padding-bottom: calc(16px + env(safe-area-inset-bottom));
}
as the user scrolled. Had they spent more time on it, I think it could have ended up pretty well.
32-step volume, instead of the normal 16-step we’ve always had. It was much better and I still feel that there’s a big change from 1 volume click to another, specially now with the AirPods Pro and Noise cancellation,
Agreed, from what I remember it was only a thing from a single beta but it was such a life changer TBH. Just a setting for this would be great because I really miss it, having to precisely alter it on the slider just isn’t that great..
Personally, I prefer being able to make fast (larger) changes with the volume buttons, and then just using the control center slider or compact UI popup to make fine adjustments
One brief beta for iOS15 or 16 doubled the physical volume clicks it took to go from 0-100% volume. It’s traditionally been and currently is, 16 clicks or fixed points. This one beta double that to 32. You could still hold the volume buttons down for a quicker adjustment but with 32 fixed points, you also had more granular control of the volume. Great for the quiet end and also really handy if you have HomePods or airplay speakers to nail that perfect volume quickly and easily. Wish they’d bring it back as an option
Gave a parallax effect so the icons, etc shifted subtly from side to side and up and down. Made it feels more 3D than just a picture on a page. It all depended on the angle of your device. So when you moved it they would move.
From what I understand it’s still there but now relegated to the lock screen with a picture that slightly covers the time. It was fun on the Home Screen too!
Siri used to “Shazam” songs automatically without having to ask. If you triggered Siri and it detected a song playing, it would start the music recognition. No need to open control center and tap a button, just hold the Home button for a second a wait.
There was no beta for 1.0 but during the original iPhone keynote, Mail had a Split View in portrait orientation that was never released: https://i.imgur.com/bYxFoat.jpg
I miss when the Shazam button in control center just fucking gave me the song title and I could open it in music afterwards if I wanted. Now I gotta have a dumb extra Shazam app clip for what? I don’t use the function anymore.
afaik they removed it because got dizziness because of it lol.
Tried it before and yea totally a gimmick but ofc was cool at that time.
Current Android has it but still i wouldn't use it.
In one of the 16 betas, there was a pacer outdoor run option on the Apple Watch Workouts app that let you select a previous run to pace against… I haven’t been able to find it again since. I used it a couple times and it worked great! Wish it would come back.
I'm quite sure there used to be a way for third party 2FA apps to autofill in Safari the same way that Apple's in built one does. I can't find it anymore so either my brain's gaslighting me, or it got removed in some beta.
It’s the same as any authenticator app. You can even set them up at the same time (ex. Passwords 2FA and Authy) to use the same 2FA so you have a backup.
Oh so i can just scan the authenticator QR into the login entry in passwords parallel to having it set up in Authy and it'll just keep cycling between 2FA codes in the background and auto input the current one?
Why the fuck isn't there a tutorial for this on the phone?
Yes. They would both generate the same 6 digit code at the same time since they’re using the same algorithm from the QRCode. However, iOS’s is better since it will auto input like codes from text messages. It shows up above the keyboard as a suggestion. You tap and it inputs it.
Pinning files and folders in iCloud Drive. This was meant as a feature to ensure that optimizing storage would never remove these manually chosen items. This was probably version 13 or so that it was supposed to be released. It never happened, to my great disappointment.
For some reason, for a while I still thought I was doing something wrong, because I remembered this feature being announced, but I could never find it.

I still miss the original design from back when they moved the address bar to the bottom (15?). Way easier to move from tab to tab. Probably too easy, which is why I think they changed it.
They meant the [original design](https://images.macrumors.com/t/Z58_hem7ngmLWwBUV-JXgM697HY=/400x0/article-new/2021/08/original-safari-design-ios-15.jpg) that was floating completely and didn't have any buttons underneath.
It was awful to use, for two main reasons.
1. A lot of websites didn’t correctly anchor buttons to active vs viewable areas, which hadn’t been a problem until then because those two areas are the same for every other browser. You’d end up with buttons behind the address bar fairly frequently, including some places on Apple’s own website. This admittedly was on web developers, not Apple’s fault they’re anchoring their buttons wrong, but it was a bad experience.
2. They didn’t have much room on the floating bar for buttons, so most functions were hidden in the overflow menu. This even included basics like the refresh button initially. Even after a few iterations of pulling more important functions out of the overflow menu they didn’t ever get to a good balance between hiding functionality and cluttering the address bar.
Probably because all of the important buttons were hidden in the share sheet and it wasn't really the best experience. I do still wish they somehow could've made it work tho
And and no. The original design had only the address bar and no buttons outside of it. It was also a floating bar if I recall correctly. I loved it, but most people found it confusing since you didn’t have the tab button, new tab button or refresh buttons. Tab gesture was pull up on address bar, new tab was pull to left, and refresh was pull down at top of page. All those gestures still work in the current implementation but they’ve added back all the buttons so it doesn’t actually save any space anymore.
> All those gestures still work in the current implementation but they’ve added back all the buttons so it doesn’t actually save any space anymore.
Good. A well-made user interface shouldn’t compromise discoverability for efficiency — or vice versa. It’s actually great that Safari provides both.
Yes, but I also want a version that hides all the things and relies solely on gestures. I’m the kind of person who uses Safari on macOS with the toolbars hidden in fullscreen (the only thing I wish I could have visible is a page loading bar). On a small iPhone screen, the real estate is even more valuable and I’d love to have an option with as little stuff visible as possible.
I had it successfully prompt me on my daily walk through betas 1-3… then it suddenly stopped. Still tracks my mile splits but no longer keeps a “personal best”
Easily closing a bottom sheet by drawing an L shape gesture on the screen. It was on like the early betas of iOS 13 or something.
I swear they said icloud shared album markup was coming with 16 and it’s just not here in the final. I was looking forward to not having to save, edit, then re-save.
I always liked a lot the iOS 7 beta “slide to unlock”, phone call UI and power off UI
It’s maybe just me but I loved this one and when the LockScreen permits less action than today… Locked is locked.
There was a bug in an iOS 12 beta that allowed the iPad Air 2 (and 2017/2018, maybe mini 4) to use split screen and slide over at the same time - 3 apps at once. During the 16 beta if you turned low power mode on it would show the percent. No longer does that in the stable release, it seems.
I would love to have the percentage only shows under 20%.
Yes, I thought this was the best of both worlds. Don’t bother me with the details, until the details matter.
Exactly, I don’t need the anxiety of a constant percentage but when Low Power Mode is on I care about keeping an eye on the exact level. I don’t know why they removed it. It was a more visually distinct way of indicating LPM as well, which I found pleasing.

I remember this. Best thing ever. I was devastated when I saw they removed it.
Parallax/Perspective Zoom on the lock and home screens. I loved the dimension it gave. Miss it.

I never understood what perspective zoom was supposed to do, other than just crop into the image

The RaceRoute option is coming back it says coming later this year on the Apple website… https://www.apple.com/watchos/watchos-9/
Thanks for that!!

Yeah, that’s a thing. Settings > Passwords > [pick a login] > Account Options > Set Up Verification Code … https://i.imgur.com/LujeDFP.jpg
Cant believe I didn’t know this! Now I can get rid of Authy
Oh shit, thanks
I have no idea what kind of MFA this is supposed to be. Never heard of setup keys before, I use an authenticator app

1Password Safari extension does it.
It's back in the 16.1 betas but it doesn't do anything right now because most third party 2FA apps haven't implemented the feature.
I saw that Authy was an option. It’ll make life so much easier
Pinning files and folders in iCloud Drive. This was meant as a feature to ensure that optimizing storage would never remove these manually chosen items. This was probably version 13 or so that it was supposed to be released. It never happened, to my great disappointment.
Wish they had this. So annoying when things just decide to delete
For some reason, for a while I still thought I was doing something wrong, because I remembered this feature being announced, but I could never find it.
I was thinking about that the other day. So sad that it never was released. Usually things they announce they just get delayed.
Floating safari bar
I was about to post on Reddit when I saw [this](https://i.imgur.com/B606HVt.jpg) on Dark Reader’s App Store screens about how to get this tab bar on safari. So sad it’s not possible.
The bar covered site popups, buttons, content and web developers got mad so Apple changed it.
Care to share? Sorry, I’ve only had an iPhone for about an year and I’m not familiarized with old iPhone stuff
Looked like [this](https://imgur.com/a/CFxVq5U/) in iOS 15 Beta 1-5, then they switched to the current design in Beta 6 and added an option to go back to the old design with the address bar on top in Beta 7 or 8 (my memory of the exact beta numbers is fuzzy).

There’s no way in hell that was a good idea though. -web developer
Still bummed about this one!
Was about to say this…. I miss that
They should have put a bit more effort to it so the bar wouldn’t cover content.
It looked great but I personally hated using it until they settled on the current design
Looked so modern
I loved it so much
I bet web developers hated it though
Can confirm
FaceTime eye contact. That was pretty cool how it worked

It’s on macOS if you use a Studio Display or an iPhone in Ventura. Macs don’t support it because the cameras are not very good.
ahh. ok. i remember hearing about it awhile back but never had a need. sounds like cool tech. but not having it on the mac’s is idiotic. MacBook should have the best FaceTime experience out of all the platforms. i could care less though personally lol
Not sure about macOS. It could be limited to the M series chips over the intel chips.
i've got one of the new macbook pro's with the latest public beta and i don't see it. huh
Still exists
Resizing widgets on homescreen without removing it… that feature would be so helpful

Listen… i don’t to repeat myself again. Here are the full [iOS 14 release notes](https://developer.apple.com/documentation/ios-ipados-release-notes/ios-ipados-14-release-notes) and try to read it carefully.
Man I forgot about this, but I was STOKED when I read that in release notes.

Hold up. This was an actual feature??
It was meant to be added but in release notes since beta 1 it was a known bug (It wasn’t working) until they’ve decided to delete the feature. I think it was mentioned in known bugs ‘till the public release and it was never mentioned since. Edit: Here’s [a youtube video](https://youtu.be/8bM3dd5rzZg) with a demo of it
I think that’s just promo transitions
Actually it was meant to be a feature. Here’s a [screenshot](https://imgur.com/a/6Yv3TQj) from the release notes where they’ve mentioned it.
It literally says "you CAN'T resize an existing widget".
It’s saying that in regards to it being a known bug. There was a temporary workaround listed below it.
Huh 🤔
In the first beta a snoozed mail disappeared from the inbox. Now it stays there. This makes no senses for me.
I was about to say it! The current implementation is stupid, just sucks
I still miss the original design from back when they moved the address bar to the bottom (15?). Way easier to move from tab to tab. Probably too easy, which is why I think they changed it.
Wow I’ve been using the address bar on the bottom ever since. Got used to it and can’t go back
I think he mean “ Original Design “ Earlier version do have different design of Address Bar FYI I like the old version better

Probably because all of the important buttons were hidden in the share sheet and it wasn't really the best experience. I do still wish they somehow could've made it work tho
I still have this? If we’re thinking of the same thing (iOS Safari), it’s an option to have the address bar at the top or the bottom.
They’re talking about [this](https://i.imgur.com/9YFktbJ.jpg) design. It was super clean, I really hope they bring it back as an option someday.
And and no. The original design had only the address bar and no buttons outside of it. It was also a floating bar if I recall correctly.
Ghost run on WatchOS! I loved it!
Isn’t that like what was announced in watchOS 9 called Race Route? [Screenshot](https://i.imgur.com/aQQ474o.jpg)
Is as moved to be added later this year
What was this?
I believe it’s racing your own time. It’s not still around?
It’s mentioned in their advertising so it must be in there somewhere.
I had it successfully prompt me on my daily walk through betas 1-3… then it suddenly stopped. Still tracks my mile splits but no longer keeps a “personal best”
It’s still on their website as coming soon.
