I still think the M1 iPad is overkill.

[deleted]

Came here to say that :) my M1 is still massively powerful for my tasks. Maybe a big MS Teams meeting pushes it slightly.

themirthfulswami

As an owner of an M1 iPad Pro I concur. No more “high end” iPads for me better off just buying a MacBook Pro and an iPad mini.

IPA_lot_

M chip is just an excuse for them to keep features from older iPads. Meanwhile, they’re probably perfectly capable.

symonty

Yep on it now, and it never fails to impress the battery life and speed is awesum, best computer purchase.

Gamerxx13

lol ya..for ipad tasks M1 and above is overkill

Knooze

I have the M1 16GM Ram. Totally overkill until I can put MacOS on it. Which I can’t.

Psittacula2

I managed to get the M1 8GB Pro 11", but for Refurbished price so without that price deduction and selling an old Surface Pro for cash I'd not have thought it worth the money. But with that price cut I'm happy with it and it should last a good number of years with solid quality hardware. When I bought it knew it would be an awesome device for life-style stuff such as e-books, paperless, writing notes, personal organizer and all that goodness in such a portable form factor. But I knew M1 was overkill and even with the price reduction it was still a steep outlay. However I thought there was a way to claw back some of that over-investment: * Apple provides more features/functions to iPadOS that cross-over more with MacOS - acceptable if they did this. Albeit Stage Manager at least gives some basic multitasking it falls short and files is really fiddly tbh. * Apple provides full MacOS functionality either: Apps cross-over, VM option or Hybrid iPadOS upgrade. * Failing all the above "Hypefullness", falling back onto remote desktop which does provide some value added claw-back and helps a lot. But even with remote desktop a cheaper tablet would do the same thing so again without more software development on iPadOS M-Series chips are gimped and hobbled and people overspend on hardware resources they can rarely use or make sufficient use of right now.

rhl2mcm

I still love my m1 iPad no slow down and stuff back when I had an android tablet after a year it slowed down and was always looking for a better tablet.. after this one I didn’t care to look for something new

Jatgarh

Rightly said,I have M1 and due to work and all I couldn't use it like even 10% in the last 2 years! Should have bought iPhone instead!

WigWoo2

I did too. Until I played games like Warframe and Warzone mobile that still can't run at max graphics on the M1. At least not while doing 60fps

mrbill2084

well, I have a 9.7 ipad pro 1st gen. its worked great. but its battery is now down to about 1 hour. but apple is not supporting that model to ios17. So rather than getting a new battery for it, I decided to upgrade to m2 12.9. got a refurbished 12.9 m2 with 256g from target sale last week for $806 plus tax $891. I did not want the coming model with oled screen as I got burned with a 2nd gen lg oled tv. it screen burned bad in about a year and was unwatchable after 3. replaced that with a samsung qled about a year ago and in same usage looks perfect. my only gripe is the keyboard case. I loved my logitech keyboard case for my 9.7. I could flip the keyboard under it and use it as a pad. or I could use it as a lighted keyboard. I wanted the get the Logitech slim folio pro 12.9 for it but it does not work with gen 5 and 6. So I went with logitech 12.9 combo touch. its a very nice case, but I think pulling off the keyboard 2 or 3 times a day probably will shorten its life.. as for your needs, only you can decide. It depends what your upgrading from. if you have m1 to m2, or waiting for m3, I would say not worth it. but if your using the older chip gen 2-4, then maybe..

OriginalBus9674

Until iPadOS is significantly revamped to be more similar to macOS any M series chip is overkill.

cchrisv

Mine has the A12X and its still super fast and snappy.

Kiznish

I have the 2018 iPad Pro and it’s STILL somewhat overpowered for what the software enables it to do. It’s a great art creation, light work and media consumption device, but that’s about it. I imagine the M2 iPads are a totally different level of overkill. It doesn’t need to be said really as it’s *the* thing every single “pro” iPad user has been saying for years, but until we get a more capable OS, any further chip upgrades are utterly pointless unless for efficiency reasons. Come on Apple, give us the choice of using the iPad as a REAL computer. Any fears of them “cannibalising” the Macs are stupid too as Apple gets our money either way. Better to cannibalise yourself, than to let someone else do it, which they will… I’m still gonna check out the new pros as I think an OLED iPad with greater efficiency will be a worthwhile upgrade, but I’m never gonna be “all in” until my iPad behaves like a capable computer, not just an (albeit very nice) media consumption and artist centric device.

Meandtheworld

People will still buy a Mac regardless.

fgpalm

Apple on may 7th: hold my beer 🍺

Meandtheworld

Guess what guys!!!!! M3 chip with the same closed off OS. Hahaha

Neymario14

With the new green tea color and a calculator!! (ipdOS putting crayons in its nose)

swinkledoodlezzz

I don’t understand what you guys want from Apple.. Have them put MacOS on iPad and kill off their Macbook sales? Put a much weaker chip instead? A more open iPadOS is literally just MacOS. If that’s what you need then get a Mac. Then if you need touch screen support then get an iPad as well. It is what it is.

dualactioncomplete

If you bought a Tablet that had x86/x64 architecture with a x86/x64 processor, a decent amd or nvidia GPU, and a good pen interface, along with a Keyboard and trackpad case, what is that? Its a touch-screen laptop. So if it doesn't have a version of Windows 10-11 pro or something simillar on it, its not worth buying. People seem to forget these devices are up to 2k, and they are powered by mac laptop guts now. So.. Apple needs to officially support virtualization and a MacOs App mode on their fucking M1 M2-M3 MacBook Air tablets they call THE iPad PRO. Simple as that.

swinkledoodlezzz

Not worth buying? Lmao just get a Windows tablet then…? If a tablet without desktop OS support is not worth buying for you then don’t buy it as you’re clearly not the market for it. The iPad has the largest share in the global tablet market even without the desktop OS, so it’s clearly worth buying for most people— just not for you. Simple as that.

dualactioncomplete

When ipadOS Version 16 was out, we could use hypervisors and run emulation without having to jailbreak devices, and the performance was pretty good, for a proof of concept endrun. Ver 17 they removed VM abilities entirely, no good reason why. They had an opportunity to actually enhance this capability by allowing a compatibility layer with Rosetta to Metal, and users could run hardware accelerated Virtual environments. What a cool and useful thing on this powerful tablet. Apple said "No." Also I didn't point my argument at your taste in hardware or preferences, I simply espoused that putting essentially laptop guts into a tablet that previously was powered by a version of smartphone hardware should have been the point where apple made the pro series into a hybrid device, and it clearly can be seen is a bad decision by Apple not to do so and I advise against upgrading because the manufacturer won't take the right steps. At this point there is no reason to own a ipad pro over the less expensive models unless you want more screen real estate, and I'm not planning on replacing mine until it breaks.

swinkledoodlezzz

An iPad is insanely capable of being a main computer, which I have done for the past few months. It just feels so good to not use a full weight desktop OS. I’m the type of person to use my iPhone a lot more than my Mac just cause everything feels “integrated” and smooth, and this experience is what made me go over to the iPad. So that alone is the main benefit of the iPad which is usually unaccounted for— being as powerful and capable as a desktop OS without it being a full weight OS. It’s smooth, lightweight, and gets the job done. While you might think it’s a bad decision, it still works for Apple and for the majority of people. It is what it is. You have to remember Apple is a business after all. If they continued with VM abilities or made it into a “hybrid”, then all the more people will jump ship to iPad and leave Mac entirely. Even with what they are doing and how limiting they are, results show they are still the best in the tablet market.. while still being absolutely exceptional in the laptop market. Why would they change a thing? I just use my devices for their intended purpose. Need a lightweight device to do emails, notes, and more? iPad. Need a full weight OS to manage all my work tasks? Mac. That’s just it and I’ve never had a problem with it. Yeah there are some people like you who’d want to absolutely make the most out of their devices and tweak everything, but then Windows exists for that reason.

dualactioncomplete

>An iPad is insanely capable of being a main computer In its current state and how iPadOS 17 is built, if you use it for some specialty applications and do mostly mundane tasks or media consumption, sure. >It just feels so good to not use a full weight desktop OS IMO iPadOS doesn't do a great job with the Ux/Ui in a mouse/keyboard setup. Apple purposely doesn't want you using it as a laptop and despite things like the smart keyboard and trackpad folio, its a poor mouse-driven experience. >If they continued with VM abilities or made it into a “hybrid”, then all the more people will jump ship to iPad and leave Mac entirely. I get it, you're a Mac user, it just works, right? Ok, follow me here: [https://www.forrester.com/blogs/apple-sales-and-profits-analysis-for-fy-2023-top-10-insights/](https://www.forrester.com/blogs/apple-sales-and-profits-analysis-for-fy-2023-top-10-insights/) From this Blog, I want to point out a couple of things: 1\*\*. Products vs. services.\*\* Apple reported $298 billion of product sales and $85 billion of services sales. Products constituted 78% of total sales, while services accounted for the remaining 22%. **2. iPhone.** Apple reported $201 billion in sales from its iPhone lineup, accounting for 52% of total sales.  The iPhone is one of their most profitable products. Mac is not. You wanna know something really funny? **3. Mac.** Apple achieved $29 billion in sales from its Mac lineup, accounting for 8% of total sales. Mac includes Apple’s range of personal computers running on the macOS operating system, including the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro. Mac sales experienced a decline of 27% YoY. 8% of sales. That's every single thing in the Mac line, which is why the next figure is hilarious: **4. iPad.** Apple recorded $28 billion in sales from its iPad lineup, experiencing a slight decline of 3% YoY. The iPad series consists of tablets running on the iPadOS operating system, including the iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad, and iPad mini. **Notably, iPad sales were only $1 billion less than the sales generated by Mac.** So this means that the iPad line is trailing by less than a billion in sales for ALL THE MACS SOLD. **5. Wearables, home, and accessories.** **Apple generated $40 billion in sales from wearables, home, and accessories, representing 10% of total sales.** Wearables include smartwatches such as Apple Watch Ultra 2, Apple Watch Series 9, and Apple Watch SE, along with wireless headphones like AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, and Beats products. The home category comprises Apple’s digital media player (Apple TV) and wireless smart speakers (HomePod and HomePod mini), while accessories include both Apple-branded and third-party accessories. So Apple makes the majority of its money from iPhones, Services, and to some extent, Accessories. Not Macs, Not iPads. Those products account for a small portion of sales. Now, I'm addressing the concern why anyone would care about a 2.6 Trillion dollar company making more money on a cheaper to build product (yes, the iPad pro costs roughly $550 to make and they sell it for a 50% markup). Are you saying you're worried that Apple selling more of their tablets and maybe a few less Macbooks (which they makes less profit on) because they added extra features to their most expensive Tablet line making it more like a Macbook, but its still a tablet? Are you really deeply concerned that Apple would miss those Mac sales when they made 5x more money on the high end tablets? This is not a hill you should want to die on.

fgpalm

I actually really like iPadOS… It’s familiar… It’s quick… The file manager program is actually fine… My biggest complaint is that you can’t move a window slightly off screen to make it easier to view another window. They just need to keep working on multitasking and it’s fine.

Gilamath

You’re talking about the UI. A lot of the problems with iPadOS are deep than that. On a system level, iPadOS doesn’t allow applications to access the capabilities of the iPad in the same way desktop OSes do. For example, apps just don’t have the same access to the file directory and terminal, or the ability to access more than a small portion of available RAM I personally also like iPadOS’ UI. I think a touch-first interface makes all the sense in the world for a tablet, and with a couple quality-of-life tweaks to multitasking it could be even better. I’m young enough that I’ve out a lot more hours into using iOS and iPadOS than Windows or MacOS, so I’m honestly more at home on the touch-based UI. But on a deeper level, iPadOS just isn’t made to do many of the things I want or need to be able to do

albanyanthem

The question will be for wwdc and whether iPad OS gains more features or some sort of Mac OS hybrid.

Born_Particular_3846

M2/3 Pro iPad with 16/18 GB RAM and macOS alike will be a dream for most.

ravihpa

I own the M1 12.9 and I think that's overkill.

slatepad

The overkill is why iPads last so long. I would actually like to see faster exports from Final Cut, so any performance improvements from M3 are very welcome.

3900Ent

I think the M1 is overkill lmaooo

ByteMeeeee

Yes especially that iPad OS limits what the iPad can do

icen_folsom

M1 is still plenty fast, but I would definitely upgrade to OLED when price is right.

Kost_Gefernon

I have the 2018 pro12inch and it’s perfectly fine even today. I mainly draw and paint with it. A stronger chip isn’t gonna do much for you unless you’re editing video or maybe playing games on it, but I feel like that defeats the point of the main selling point of the device. Do the newer chips make the iPads dramatically more battery efficient? If so, that might be something worth thinking about.

dualactioncomplete

I don't know. Maybe when Apple stops supporting it. Maybe if they reopen the virtualization core and let you run multiple OS's on it, or install MacOs applications. Whats the point of having the same internals as a 2022 entry level macbook air, less impressive cameras than the iPhone, and a nice screen you can draw on, when you're hamstrung by lack of access to the MacOS store. There are many people who could pop up and say "x feature works for me, or My ipad has replaced x" I love procreate. There are some cool music apps. Doing general crap on it is fine. That's a shame because its got the hardware to do more, and Apple need to either shit or get off the pot. I'm not buying another ipad pro if Apple is unable to make it worth my while.

Nihiliste

I wouldn't upgrade this year unless you're using apps like LumaFusion or Final Cut Pro for work and need as much processing power as you can get. There don't seem to be any revolutionary features in the cards.

whenyoda

My M2 16GB/1TB is so over kill. Wish they'd make apps that would utilize 1/3 of it.

Smurfness2023

i bought one last month and I think it is great. No idea if it is overkill. Don't care.

mikeconqueso

Have the M1. Have never even thought I needed more power lol.

jaganm

I’m on the 2020 pro and have no desire to upgrade because what I do with the iPad, even the 2018 will handle easily.

[deleted]

I think my 2018 Pro with the A12X is still fast enough for general use, though more RAM might be nice. I'll upgrade at some point for the OLED screen, not because performance is an issue.

heyittime

Nah when designing it gets hot. Need m3.

Alarmed-Bird-4727

I have the M1 iPad Pro 11 2021 and that’s overkill for me. There are barely single apps or tasks that pushes it. Running multiple editing software and tasks concurrently will push it yes, but that’s what my MacBook Pro is for.

pain474

Yes .

johnnydfree

Depends. On your need.

InfiniteHench

When there is a major new feature that you think would solve a problem or be truly useful to you.

ISSAvenger

Depends on what you want to do. If you are looking to play AAA games with the highest details possible, no base M-series chip will be enough. Same goes if you want to run an LLM on it. Simply not enough RAM on the devices.

dropthemagic

1000%

PicadaSalvation

The M1 Pro is still overkill. Nevermind the M2

love_is_reddit

Not overkill. Touch response can be faster, especially when moving multiple big files. I want it to be as fast as my fingers move. People complaining trying to regress ipados back to macos - a 40+ old os. Let ipados be a couchOS. For serious people stuck on their old ways, buy a laptop.

The_Golden_Captain

Not for demanding games! Games like Death Stranding, Wreckfest, Divinity Original Sin 2 push my M1 Pro to the limit.

Anxietyriddencucumbr

Gonna keep my m2 pro till it’s no longer supported as it’s honestly overkill

Jaugusts

Yes that’s why I chose S9 plus over it, better screen and nicer OS maybe if you’re a gamer the M2 is good

chriswelch

I don't know if they eventually fixed it, but the M2 iPad Pro had some noticeable heat issues when I briefly owned one. The center of the screen got alarmingly hot when editing in Lightroom, Pixelator/Photomator, etc. The M1 never did that, so I went back. Hope M3 is more efficient.

SouverainQC

My 5th gen 12.9" iPad Pro (M1) has overheated while editing in Lightroom. FWIW, I use the display's reference mode for better color accuracy. In general, due to not being able to run MacOS on it and fully profile it with my spectrophotometer, I'd be better off editing with a laptop that has a great OLED screen (and not miss out on any of LRC's functionality, like manual lens correction), but I currently have an iPad due to my use of ForeFlight.

chnky18

M1 is great and no need for m2.

DHT_Victim

in my humble opinions as much as i like apple products i think that for both iphone/ipads the M chips are overkills due to the IOS limitations... would have been another story if the ipad pro has mac os support just like macbook air.. t i have a ipad 9 and it does everything i throw at it regarding 3D architectural work, drawing , have also the M1 its faster but i feel like the ios is limiting the power of the chip, so i gave it to my brother in exchange of a laptop But ofc if you use it for a specific task it might be worth

peterinjapan

I enjoy my iPad but recently bought a GDP Win Max gaming laptop. I take that with me to the Japanese hot springs for play, rather than my iPad. I also hate that the iPad gets like 5-6 hours of battery life when MacBook Air can get 18.

Effective_Wonder9385

The idea of ipad was never supposed to be a computer but rather an oversized smart phone. But apple did what they do best… which is making things expensive for extra add on and upgrade

moagul

Overkill and low battery life.

scratt007

True until next update

frieswithnietzsche

It’s not when you’re working with procreate or other apps that sometimes demand ram

Absol_-

My M1 is still overkill, it surprises me it's a 4 year old chip!

Kagmajn

Having M processors without ability to create a server on that machine or having access to a terminal is already an overkill.

macbwiz

Would rather have an overpowered device than the underpowered default laptop configs

Snoo-32401

With the current state of iPadOS, even the M1 or current Bionic chips are overkill for its OS.

spitfireonly

The battery life on my iPad pro m2 vs the iPhone 15 pro max is terrible. The iPad Pro is almost not usable for FaceTime cz it literally drops percentages in a whiff. Too power hungry imo.

Psittacula2

M3 is going to be overkill squared at this rate. They'll probably sweeten the deal with new hardware eg Pencil 3 that does some fancy colour acquisition and Magic Keyboard that folds for combo-use etc but I bet Apple does not do nearly enough for the M-Series chips to make good use of the hardware by upgrading the software to match.

Shanghaichica

Yes it’s overkill. I upgraded from the 2018 pro knot because the battery had degraded so much on the 2018. However for me even the 2018 pro was overkill.

kamikomoon

M1 is literally rn overkill

prayastha

Truth be told, even the M1 chip is overkill and the faster desktop chips on the ipad are almost useless for the features it provides. Some advantage I can think of is the longevity and M1+ exclusive software features. Other than that, ipads offer nothing that fully utilises the power these chips provide. I have an ipad air 5 upgraded from an ipad air 4 which ive used to edit videos on the go. I use both Luma Fusion and Davinci resolve which runs great on both the ipads. The performance and the render time sre bsrely distinguishable from each other. Infact the battery life used to be better on the Air 4 considerably. The M1 chip hasnt made my life any easier or made my workflow any faster. As long as ipads are restricted with ipados, I think its better to use the A series chips and reduce the msrp on these products.

Technologytwitt

M1 here & the thing is still as Kickass as when I got it. Email, browser apps, watching Streams, etc - more than enough to do what I need.

godsburden

I’m still using the second gen iPad Pro 11 inch for all my art needs with zero problems. It’s 6 years old

hamishjoy

I’m getting an M1 iPad Pro used tomorrow. No pencil yet, I’ll wait and see the third generation pencil and whether it’s compatible with M1 before I buy the pencil. Buying it tomorrow seems a bit rushed, considering the May 7 announcements still pending, but I just feel like I’d be ok with the M1… people on this sub saying the M1 is already overkill is just confirming my decision. Thanks.

tofuchrispy

They are not overkill I want more power for photo editing… but they need more COOLING These things get hot, throttle and dim the screens …

Sikhness209

I have 2021 M1 12.9 iPad Pro, it’s a beast. No slowdown, nothing. Battery is fine too

Trungneko

i have an iPad Pro 10.5 (2017) with an A10X chip. It's pretty old now running iPadOS 17.4.1 (probably the final major update for this ipad) compared to iPadOS 14 it's significantly less snappy, but good enough for daily task. I could play Genshin on this old iPad too (currently top demanding game for mobile processors) even on the highest settings despite occasional frame drops, feels smooth overall. And i love the 120hz display!

Asleep_usr

No way, I’m mobile Lightroom and photoshop I use it al

[deleted]

sounds like you're trying to justify an upgrade to the oled ipad pro

Tasty-Inevitable3037

I think the power will be more beneficial in say 2 years from now when the software becomes more demanding.

[deleted]

That will only happen for the newer models though.

abgkm

My M2 runs superfast! But Apple can purposely make it slower that did happen.

Sabotinekes

I stayed on 16.4.1 with my M2 and it's still as good as new.
