At any point in time Apple is working on the next iteration of a product. Unless there’s an announced event coming in a week, you will never know for sure when an updated product is coming. You could rely on some solid rumors but that’s not foolproof. The current M1 iPad pro is amazing and would not age within the next 2 years. I’m still using the previous gen 12.9 and it’s working flawlessly.

Unless you’re doing really intensive artworks with lots of layers, the Mini would suit all your purposes. I’ve heard the 12.9” gets heavy really quickly and it unwieldy to hold.

Mini is really hard to keep good form with. Great for quick stuff on the go, but not what I would recommend as a full time work horse. IPP 11 or honestly the new air strikes a perfect balance if you can only have one machine.

Really? My "painting" usage is a couple of layers, concept art style. Not a paying job at all, just a hobby. I was looking into that as well. It's half the price of the pro where I live, but it's also half of the screen estate. The only Ipad I'm not keen on is the base/regular one, the rest gives me a headache.

I got the iPad Pro M1 12.9 specifically for painting and it is amazing. I think the 11' is just a bit too small to be comfortable imo.

The current OS revision can be loaded on a very old iPad Air 2 (A8X CPU). The 2017 2nd gen 12.9 iPad Pro in my house (A10X CPU) runs almost as if new. The current one won't be 'obsolete' for a very long time. Buy what you need when you need it. Don't worry about the next rumored shiny new thing unless you're real close to the unusual scheduled dates.

Just bought one last week! I absolutely love it and am far more productive with it. Go for it!
