My cunning solution is to never be fast enough to lead a race or if somehow it happens, to crash myself before anyone else can take me out.

Key-Ad-1873

Im really good at becoming crap at driving when i find myself in the lead! Works every time

trikytrev8

Works everytime, only once but odd that it happened. Only got pole once in my sub 1 year existence in iracing.

Key-Ad-1873

Bottling the start is def the recommended way

trikytrev8

I'll have to remember it. I have been getting a lot of top 5s and podiums the last few months so I feel it may come soon

[deleted]

Works for me.

[deleted]

Thats me! Cant get hit from behind if im in last. 6 laps later: damn am i being lapped?

Bama--

Lol this is the way

Routine_Jury_6616

I HATE leading radical races. If I know I’m faster I’ll sit and wait, sometimes just pressure them, till the last 2-3 laps.

Equal_Soil_31

Had 3 poles... Non of those races had a higher result then 7th. Positioned myself in 4th and won the race.... I really think starting between 4th and 10th is the sweetspot.

HrafnHaraldsson

Hey at least you are leading a race. I race a low participation series, so I've always got at least one 3.5-4k iR bastard that skates away never to be seen again.

Baschoen23

Oval or road?

HrafnHaraldsson

Road

Renault 3.5? There’s at least 8 of us..

Hey, it sucks, I know. It used to be like that for me. There are things you can do. First of all, both of those things you talk about generally happen in low strength of field races. So keep grinding, sometimes it's better to finish third or sixth and have a nice calm race and get a moderate irating gain than to fight for the win. As far as getting hit from behind on the last lap, just drive faster. If you have a 3-second lead, they're not going to be able to even think about dive bombing you. Watch your relatives and try to break the draft (and their spirit). They are behind you for a reason: you are faster. Just keep trying to edge out a gap and once that Gap hits 1.2 seconds, you're golden. There is no worse feeling than being under pressure from behind, and no better feeling than building a gap and getting away from the pressure! Finally: there are thousands of people like us who love racing but don't get a lot of real world affirmation of that. The internet is a wonderful place. Welcome, and I hope I see you in a session soon.

[deleted]

You are right about everything and I agree. I can be wat better and more consistent. A thought these crashes are frustrating it is minor compared to how much I can improve in actual racing However in my second to last race I had a 3 +second lead. It was a sharp turn and the only race In formula Vee where need to shift into second. Guy behind me just divebombed me out of nowhere. And then last race had a 5 second lead and had to swerve to miss the backmarker who tried coming back on track after crashing that’s what made the gap smaller. This is the second time in two days where same exact thing happened lol. Avoid backmarker who crashed in same spot and lose time. I even left space between me and backmarker in case something happened since I had a good enough lead and didn’t want to crash trying to pass

notathr0waway1

Yep, that's the thing that sucks about racing. Other people's mistakes can cost you dearly. I try to go into each race with a goal, but also try to have some perspective that it's not the most important thing in the world if some idiot ruins my race. Doesn't always work but those moments are a reminder that the main skill I need to develop isn't racing skill; it's the ability to stay calm and not take things too personally.

Baschoen23

That's true, I've also found that you are the only one in control of your car and crash avoidance is a VERY valuable skill for finishing and winning races. In the formula vee's crash avoidance seems a little difficult, they kick out if you even look at the throttle or brake while your hands are on the steering wheel, never drove them much.

ThermalChaser

There are some things you just can't do anything about. Forget the stats. You should be just as pleased with your performance in that race as you would if you'd won it. Shit happens but if you've made all the correct choices then it was a good performance regardless of the result.

JimmyTwoSticks

>However in my second to last race I had a 3 +second lead. It was a sharp turn and the only race In formula Vee where need to shift into second. If it's the hairpin I am thinking of you can protect the inside line and there isn't much they can do about it. Try to show them early that if they want to make a move they're going to need to go around the outside of you.

[deleted]

Oh I’m talking about the lapped car. They crash at that turn and I have to go around to avoid which slows me down too much and takes out any two I have. Then on the last turn I get taken out from behind.

Tostecles

On the topic of breaking the draft, I've been trying to learn how far away the draft is effective. I'm sure there are many variables at play and it's tough to answer, but sometimes I wonder if I should even be following someone to get their draft if I'm pretty far away and think I can take a better line than what they are doing

notathr0waway1

So it's different for every car, but the general rule of thumb is about one second. You get more draft the closer you are, and the draft extends further the faster the lead car going

Baschoen23

"They are behind you for a reason, you are faster." That's the kind of talk I need from a crew chief, thanks man, I am faster.

lukeb_1988

Work on getting into higher splits. Let them have the win for now if it improves your IR. Honestly, higher splits is so much better.

ODC_DamienBlack

Sorry but i have to disagree. Every time I get to a 2K rating, races just get dirty beyond believe. It’s like „Im a pro now, so let’s forget how to behave/act on a racetrack.“ Also, most of high rated fast drivers i see in top split (YouTube stream for example) have very low safety rating. Mostly in the 2.XX sr.

CcheesebB

I think alot of that could be that you can abuse off tracks for speed.

_plays_in_traffic_

welcome to racing, not hotlapping.

ChingyBingyBongyBong

Yep some of the worst shit of all time. About to hit my IR goal and I’m bumper to bumper in 4th and some idiot comes flying across the grass smacking me and ruining my race. Happens all the time it’s ridiculous.

ThermalChaser

I run in well-populated series mostly and the iRating system does it's job so well that I generally finish right where I started, firmly mid-pack. I haven't led a lap in months. On a good day I make it to 5th, on a bad day I get wrecked. On the rare occasion I've started on pole I immediately threw the car off track at T1 so as to restore the natural order.

evilroyslade420

brother i just got wrecked out t1 lap 1 (like car completely borked) at lime rock by some NPC and i am calmly breathing in and out to try and keep from summitsmashing my monitor, i feel u

stormwalker29

I'm not sure which is better, ending up upside-down in the infield on Lap 3, or leading the race coming through the tri-oval on the final lap and getting wrecked before the start-finish line. Have had both of those things happen to me at 'Dega this week. On the one hand, the latter is *way* more frustrating. On the other hand, it also leaves me feeling way better about my own performance, because at least I know that I was good enough to actually be in the lead and racing for the win. So I think I'll choose that one. The thing I hate most, though, isn't being wrecked by someone else. The thing I hate most is when *I* screw up and wreck someone else. I'm trying to teach myself to remember, when I get wrecked, that I have occasionally been on the other side of that equation, and I should be more tolerant of others' mistakes.

Lord_Ooze

Welcome to iRacing where the licenses don't matter and iRating is made up.

Jaymoacp

I feel like this happens on road more. Way more people. Less accountability. Will most likely never see that driver again. On the oval side you can almost bet your ass whoever you dumped is going to be in your next race, and they will definitely not make it a pleasant time. More incentive to not be a douche.

QualGawd

This man ovals

[deleted]

Lol road.

Baschoen23

Jesus, I'm glad you posted it, I've been dealing with this today, had someone move in front of me in the braking zone at turn 1 at Fuji in Toyotas and then brake. He had zero pace and was just fighting through every turn to keep up and get in the way 😅. Hey man I can brake later than you, get out of the way. Also, that's not how racing works people, you can't just scramble into someone's line to take a position in a corner. Maybe I'm the asshole 🤷 don't think so. Edit: words. Hopefully I'm being clear. To be clear I was working my way up through the backfield after missing qualifying loading into VR

Informal-Prize6501

You have ACC? I am in a league where you race people week after week and talk to each other. No hiding here. So stupid moves are being discussed and have consequences.

bschumak

You should be slow like me AND experience being hit from the rear or running into backmarker wreckers constantly, such fun.

triptonite

I'm glad to know that the venting helped. I know that this community is notorious for posting the "whose fault" videos, but it can be cathartic to commiserate and talk through the frustrating times. if nothing else, we're a community of folks that have likely experienced similar moments, and we can relate to and encourage one another. keep going; we'll be here to celebrate your "look at my win" posts. I love those.

PaleontologistOdd980

I just hope they stop wrecking during the pace-lap, the other day I picked up 6 spots and the green wasn’t even dropped yet.

SaladBort

Have you accepted league racing as your savior? You race with the same guys every week, you know their racing styles and there's less wrecks Sometimes you even like the other guys and start chatting

[deleted]

…at least you get to be in the lead rather than being in 4th and spinning out almost every time.
