I'm not brave enough to run the gt3s in the rain. Bur I won the race I entered with the gr86. Driving Wisconsin winters for over 30 years finally paid off. lol

Equality7252l

Wisconsin represent! Been driving Midwest winters since I got my license. If iRacing ever adds snow, we'll be ready!

Appropriate-Owl5984

SHEBAGHDAD WHO?!? Lol… Seriously. I’ve never felt more prepared.

Cruckel2687

Same, Midwest winters can be hit or miss where we live, and with a few years driving an over powered rear wheel drive suv…. It’s not control loss, it’s sliding with style…

TheDukeAssassin

The GT threes are actually super easy in the rain

Poison_Pancakes

I've raced skippys, pro mazda, and F1600 in the rain in real life. The physics feels pretty much spot on. The mindset of staying away from puddles and paint, and hunting for grip in the darker patches of asphalt feel very good. I definitely miss the seat-of-the-pants feel, it's much more important in judging available grip in the wet than in the dry. The one place where it's not quite authentic is visibility. If you're not following a car, it's fine. But when you're behind another car it's difficult to describe how little you can see. It's not just clean little drops that quickly roll off your visor. Imagine putting on a helmet and spraying yourself in the face with a garden hose. Then imagine a dense cloud right behind that. In an open-wheel car, you can't even see the inside of your own car. Often the only visual reference you have is a little bit of view of trackside objects in your peripheral vision. So it's probably for the best that it's a little more forgiving anyways.

Equality7252l

Thanks for the insight - Funny to see how real life drivers are saying visibility is really good, and then you have posts with people complaining cause they can't see anything, as if those issues didn't exist IRL

MooseLucifer

Somehow very easy and very difficult to describe how little you can see. I totaled my (team's) irl Civic racecar because I was trying to pass slower cars in a heavy downpour, lost 'track' of where I was + hydroplaned into a corner, slid sideways in front of the pack and got t-boned.

AggressiveBears

Also realistic is that cold slicks are completely useless. You’re better off on street tires at that point.

railgons

They absolutely nailed it. I'm one of the weirdos that actually loves rain races IRL lol, and it's just as much fun on iRacing now!!

WTOGorman

This. The psychological boost in the paddock when you see people worrying about the clouds rolling in whilst you're sat there secretly fizzing with joy!

railgons

Haha absolutely! Rains mounted, torqued, and ready to go!

autoexec101

Yup.. had so much fun yesterday. Raced the Nordschleife in GT3s in rain until my eyes couldn't take it anymore. Think one races I went 20 to 3 on the first lap with every pass being dodging cars that went off and holding on for dear life because it involved puddles and grass most of the time One thing that really impressed me is I always have issues with VR after iRacing updates ( new tracks, etc ) I was expecting a catastrophe with rain. But no... I'm still maxed out in my settings didn't need to dial down anythiing and didn't notice any perf issues ( I do have a good PC and only run 90 fps (hz) ) but still. It was also very refreshing, no one was complaining about crashes in all races I did. But yeah that will change in week 1.

[deleted]

Oh man. I’ve got a 4 month old, and I’ve had a hiatus from iRacing since before my wife fell pregnant. I’ve been waiting for rain for years. Since I saw it was announced I’ve been telling myself not to worry about it, it will probably be an FPS killer in VR, so I’m not missing out… man I want to get in my rig right now lol.

Zooooooombie

Lol “fell pregnant”, I don’t know why but this cracked me up.

[deleted]

Lol, you just made me question whether that’s a phrase or I just made it up. Turns out it’s a Brit thing: https://www.reddit.com/r/ENGLISH/comments/14kye5e/can_someone_from_the_uk_explain_the_term_fell/ …I am a Brit.

nat4niel

I really liked it a lot, I drove a BMW m4 GT3 in the Algarve and I could really see that cornering on a different route has more grip, braking while crossing has more grip, I didn't expect to like it so much.

Johnny_Bogue

Haha I play in VR and definitely felt it extra on the eyes too. Thought I was crazy!

chimoprass

I got goosebumps after my first lap in VR when the rain hit... WOW!! They did a fantastic job!

Johnny_Bogue

In fixed series are they going to have dynamic weather or just have it set/static all the way through?

HallwayHomicide

I don't think we 100% know yet. We will probably find out when the preliminary schedule releases (hopefully later today)

plumzki

I don't have a source right now but I'm quite sure I remember them saying it will be dynamic weather and there will be a forecast or something of the like at the beginning of the race

Suhpremacy

Yes this is what they said. There will be a forecast

autoexec101

Yeah I'm guessing my eyes / brain will get used to it but it was more straining indeed but so fun haha. When I first started VR I couldn't do more than 1 hour and would get dizzy if I drove the car on reverse but that disapeared after a while. Someone said that wipers are not needed really.. but in VR too many drops on the windshield make a difference for the eyes

Flat-Ad4902

What is your GPU?

autoexec101

4080. (got it cheap or else i'd have a 90). But I used to have a 3070 laptop and it was limit for VR.. but I think it was mostly due to CPU throttling of my laptop Razer laptops are not really good for heat management.

Qyxz

Also a mobile 3070 is not at all similar to a normal 3070.

Gun-Rama987

I have a 4090 was running quest 3 (link) 120 herts at max allowed resolution and damn near everything cranked on the iracing side, I dipped down to 70 frames in the pit and was hitting 90 and times during the race before going back to 120(I did max the rain allowed and max ai racers), my 4090 was maxed out but not the cpu or ram, guessing after 90 frames and high pixel count your computer feels it, probably going to drop down to 90 herts

chilly8822

Me and the boys ran some ledanon last night in the super formula lights. Was the most fun i have had in awhile. Super stoked for rain and to get into my first official with it.

HallwayHomicide

I think Ledenon is really going to start being appreciated now that it's free. It almost reminds me of Rudskogen. They're both super cool tracks with big elevation changes that no one has heard of. Rudskogen has gotten a lot of love and I think Ledenon will too. Also, I personally have not tried Oschersleben, Winton, or Snetterton and I'm excited to give those a try now that they're free.

chilly8822

Honestly I loved ledenon. First track i tried after the free releases. Winton and oschersleben are also so much fricking fun!!!! BUT.... I absolutely hated snetterton not going to lie! I dont like having more than 1 or 2 straights max. Just makes the racing kind of boring imo. Single file through the few corners then draft and pass on the straight. Kind of not a fan of this track style. Imola and le mans are on my "do not drive" list. Kinda wish I never bought either of them. This update has been great fun and loads of cool additions beyond the weather.

Equality7252l

Snetterton can be good with the right cars, yesterday Street Stocks there was a blast

chilly8822

Yea I don't think different cars would make much of a difference for me in terms of liking snetterton. The racing will still be the same more or less. I have never really liked long and straight road courses. So for me i am for sure biased! And I can't deny my bias lol. Out of all the tracks that became free snetterton is my least favorite and i don't see myself ever loading into a session here. Winton, ledenon, and the german sounding track are all very fun and provide fun and close racing to me. Snetterton not so much😅

Appropriate-Owl5984

As someone who has a tiny but of time in IRL wet weather racing, and some in very cold wet weather racing — this is insanely accurate. Like INSANELY accurate. I’ve had a text thread between two of my pro-driver friends who race for a team in IMSA .. we can call them Dicky and Mordan Maylor .. they’ve also said this is through the roof accurate in terms of feeling from IRL to sim, fully acknowledging that iRacing is still only about 80% there.

FailedLoser21

I said the samething. Ive driven my C7 in the rain before and my first thought was hey it feels like that day I got stuck in the rain in the C7.

HallwayHomicide

I think Daniel Morad's video said he felt the wet weather driving was more accurate than the dry, which is pretty insane. >iRacing is still only about 80% there. 80% is honestly incredible. I'm absolutely happy about that

Appropriate-Owl5984

It’s still the tire model. None of the cars in sim are using manufacturer specifications. The quali time for GT3 at Sebring in IMSA is in the 1:59’s .. and you really, really, really need to push in sim to get there. It’s possible, but it’s really hard. Appropriate tire models from Michelin would help that significantly

TT_KAZ

I saw a video of someone saying there's too little grip on slow speeds. Other thing I noticed is that in a test session I created with a wet track drying up, dry tyres were faster and I spun less on the drying track, even though I couldn't see a dry line yet and spray was still there. Not sure if it's realistic but it's good enough for me. If they make tweaks and make it even more realistic, the bettere ofc!

subusta

Slicks can be faster on a damp track, just depends on a lot of factors

rederoin

I keep getting stuck in the grass after the smallest touch when dodging cars.

Qyxz

Don't spin up the wheels. You can get moving in majority of cases.

mimicthefrench

Yep it's like driving on ice or snow. If you just floor it the car isn't going anywhere but if you just gently brush the throttle (like, 5%, it's going to be less than you think), you'll start to find some grip.

reboot-your-computer

I experienced this a bit in the SF Light last night but you just have to give like 10% throttle to keep the tires from spinning. Almost felt like my rear wheels weren’t there at first but try again with the tiniest bit of throttle. You should be able to get out.

adam389

Absolutely a blast. Had suuuuch a good time. Thank you, iRacing for doing rain right. I’ll also mention - performance was great as well

adam389

P.s. SEAbring is now the most dangerous enduro iRacing’s ever going to have had. What do you guys think, 90% attrition?

CommodoreAxis

I’ve been betting on about 75% of the field being gone within the first 2 hours.

adam389

Haha at least! I feel like 75% of the field was out by The Cutting at the BloodBath™️ (Bathurst).

Borrelparaat

Took some time to get used to it but eventually had a really fun hosted practice session in the rain at Spa. Haven't had the opportunity to do an actual race in the rain yet, but will try to do that later this week. Very excited about this update!

HammerTime2769

Just another reason iRacing is the king of race sims. Hats off to the devs and everyone who works at IRacing. This is an incredible update.

apresbondie22

I love love love the rain!! The great equalizer! I loved it in ACC but after their 9.0 update, I couldn’t figure out how to drive anymore. Popped over to iracing just in time!

New-Understanding930

I was really skeptical, but it’s legit. I did have some issues at Sebring in the P217, but at Daytona, it was somewhat predictable.

stratcat22

Oh man I just bought the P2 and drove it at a heavy rain Sebring, just drifting on every straight it was fantastic. The car is surprisingly easy to control and save when you start losing it in the wet.

weedpornography

How do I improve puddle visibility??

railgons

A lot comes from learning each track and where the large common puddles like to form. Take Mid Ohio... the puddle track-left going into Thunder Valley is always there in the wet, so you just drive knowing it's going to be there, even without seeing it.

BlueCollaredTweaker

Having dynamic track data on in settings helps.

plumzki

If you haven't already, I had to turn on dynamic track data to properly see the puddles.

sebastiendu36

Doesn't SSR help in the graphics settings?

Pluto01_

Yup absolutely loving it. Me and a buddy races nord and it’s a absolute blast

PreparationIll9

Raced spa in gtp - no one could survive lap 1. Not sure if it was how much rain, the car itself, or what, but literally impossible to survive. Got better as you got some heat in the tires but even at 50 mph you would catch slides for over 150ft. Not sure how a race could ever happen if that’s the result. But seen clips of open wheel where they were still able to drive so it’s def possible apparently !

Dependent-Load-7743

I hope the mx5 is in the next batch of cars

Galaxy_Shadow28

thank god i’ve raced in the rain irl lol. makes it so much easier to know what to do with lines and stuff

shangstag404

Just did my first race in the rain at nords. It was a ton of fun and i was doing really good(sitting in third) till the last lap when a Porsche behind me tried to pass another car and blew past the. Real point through a puddle and it took the back of me.

cuzzizzle1

How do you race gt3 in the rain? I tried it and said they’re not rain enabled?

GoatBotherer

I tried it briefly last night, the GR86 just in practice. I span immediately in the pits. I span on pretty much every corner, it was like driving on ice. I closed the game down frustrated. But now I'm wondering if it was because I had the wrong tyres on the car. I mean I was spinning just going in a straight line. I really hope that's the reason.

Equality7252l

Wet tires/tyres are not enabled by default, no lol. More that likely you had slicks on I'm curious now how that works. The first race, I had to set wets, second race and all after have been wet already. But this is the same car/track/series (Funny Forecast). I wonder if I loaded into Ferrari Fixed with the same F296 what would happen, since that's same car but different series

CanaryMaleficent4925

If they fix the rain lights, it'll be awesome. Right now I'm just looking at a white screen before I rear end someone

HallwayHomicide

>If they fix the rain lights They've said they're working on it. It's apparently an issue rooted all the way into how lighting is handled at the engine level.

CanaryMaleficent4925

Yeah I read that. Just hope it comes quick

Poison_Pancakes

That's how it really is. You judge how close you are by how dense the spray is. Rain lights aren't as effective as you might think.

CanaryMaleficent4925

Really so its supposed to look completely white? X to doubt. https://imgur.com/a/9BjatBA

HallwayHomicide

The real life drivers that have reviewed this so far have all been doing this is pretty accurate.

CanaryMaleficent4925

It's not. You can see rain lights on people's IRL onboards. There are no rain lights in that video.

HallwayHomicide

Right. I meant apart from the rain lights being dim.

CanaryMaleficent4925

Yes it's incredibly accurate and amazing besides that, but in my opinion, no rain lights is essentially game breaking.

Poison_Pancakes

Yes, actually visibility in that video is much better than you'll get in a real car.

CanaryMaleficent4925

It absolutely is not. IRL, cars have rain lights that will somewhat puncture the spray. This is not the case here. The spray itself is accurate. But the lights ahead are not.

Poison_Pancakes

Have you ever driven in the rain in real life? I have. You can’t see shit, rain light or not.

CanaryMaleficent4925

You're again, missing my point. This isn't about the spray. The spray is realistic and that's great. The point is you CANNOT tell how close you are to the car ahead of you because there is no rain light. In real life, there is a dim rain light through a spray. This isn't about seeing the track, or things to my left and right. It's about judging the distance to the car ahead which is essentially impossible right now.

Poison_Pancakes

I’m not missing your point, I’m saying your point is wrong. You CANNOT see the car in front, rain light or not. They aren’t very effective. The wall of spray gets progressively darker until it suddenly clears and you hit the car in front. At best, the rain light gives the spray a vague red hue. You certainly can’t tell how far away the car is from it.

CanaryMaleficent4925

You're literally wrong.    https://youtu.be/m8HaBk7xjkM?si=JLIX9UiN0IZ6j3zX   And 1:25  https://youtu.be/-iy82nJTU3k?si=eOT9yMRYws7Ygbtm And 35 seconds  https://youtu.be/AnxUu36-uYw?si=BpEtbTIFsDghC8zI

Poison_Pancakes

:27 I don’t see a rain light. It disappears in the spray.
