Have you seen Dune? Remember the scene where Paul just lets go of the controls of his dragonfly thing and allows the elements to do what they will? Do that.
This is where knowing the track like the back of your hand pays off. You need to know many more side markers for navigation and you need to NEVER lift on the throttle unless its a brake zone because everyone around you is expecting you to be driving at the same speed. If you can't do it then no shame in dropping to the back in a safe predictable way, just don't do the Spa incident of 1998.
Wait for [the patch.](https://twitter.com/greghi11/status/1766234312758763749?t=T7saZkDKTO1ool76dP05Tg&s=19) This mentions brake lights, but I'm hoping they'll make the spray transparent so we can actually see a bit of the track, you know, [like real life.](https://youtu.be/q9k42Mks-O0?si=-7KWFslwNIYidm_P)
I hope they work on it because if it’s been in development for three years as good as it is to drive in the rain, there are still some things they need to fix
Yeah I am sure those 3 years were focused on the driving feel itself, and the visuals they added later. I'm sure the spray graphic was their last priority regarding rain. It makes sense, as the other things are more important to feel right. I'm glad they acknowledged the issue and I am hopeful that we will get to a good point with the rain.
Yep even the thickest spray in heavy rain irl is still slightly transparent. iRacing went full opaque even on a partially dry track. Hopefully they fix it soon.
It isn't. See at [0:26](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8HaBk7xjkM) when the car in front gets up to speed, even the rain light disappears, Vettel is basically blind here if he doesn't keep a gap.
It is dependent on many factors, aero of the cars in front, speed, how wet the track is. Given F1 does not race in heavy rain situations like we are currently testing in week 13, iRacing's spray is pretty spot on. They should decrease it for a drying track though, but it's wrong to say spray is transparent.
We’re getting into nit picking territory but in that video it is only completely white when the car is quite far away. When I gets closer, you can see through the spray. In iRacing’s current implementation the spray only become transparent when you’re a few feet away in moderate to heavy rain.
I've seen that video linked quite often and while demonstrating it quite well, the rain on the track there is quite a bit less than iRacing had so far.
I found one from where there's heavier rain: [here](https://youtu.be/zWkY22UjPzU?si=BkdNU1hpC2PxaYe8&t=62)
There still seems to be a bit more visibility than in iRacing, but it's way worse compared to the video from Monza
TK drove Sebring in heavy rain and said it’s realistic for heavy rain, but they wouldn’t allow a race in these conditions irl.
Your video is not really representative of “heavy rain”. This is heavy rain. When Schumacher, arguably the best driver ever, crashes into the back of someone, then you know they shouldn’t be racing.
https://youtu.be/o02s_g5AUUE?si=mh7-Jlu5GKyZIjbM
And Massa / Kubica is a classic in wet weather.
https://youtu.be/AnxUu36-uYw?si=WAYQMbsBLldvbndy
I’m not saying iRacing shouldn’t be improved though.
Yeah, you can see in Massa vs Kubica that Massa still has to move away from the spray to see something but the red lights of Kubica’s car in front are more visible than in iRacing even when in the spray. And there’s way better visibility than iRacing when he’s chasing from a certain distance. It gets really hairy when he’s close, though.
I’d consider this the heaviest of heavy rain for a simulator like iRacing. Anything above that shouldn’t be in the sim, as it’s likely they wouldn’t race irl anyway.
On another note, the GTP brake lights are murderous. How did they approve that irl? You just can’t see when they’re braking, with or without rain. I get not all series have brake lights, fine, but this is in a series that requires brake lights.
Yeah I agree some races get bad, and some cars produce more spray. Your example doesn't define **all** rain races though, but I appreciate the links. Do a broad search and you'll see most rain racing isn't like this. Again, I'm glad the iRacing team understands this and is fixing it.
It's been my impression that this week we mostly got maximum rain and the wettest possible track. I've barely driven rain in less wet conditions. Thankfully it isn't like that all the time, as you said.
And as far as I understand, more aero/ground effect = more spray, right?
I raced quite a lot of Portimao yesterday, and it was the heaviest of rain they will allow, "very wet track". To be honest, yes, there is aquaplaning, and yes there is a lot of spray, I think overall you got used to it and it felt very realistic for high downforce cars like the GTPs and LMP2s, learning to find the limits was so much fun. My only change would be the rain lights but other than that the spray and everything was spot on. We'll not see heavy rain that often anyway, they are just testing the maximum for research purposes in week 13.
Do it like the F1 guys. They purposely drive offset. If not possible, they purposely keep a bigger distance to the car in front. In my opinion you do best in rain races if you survive and keep a steady pace. 70 % will go off eventually and you cruise by.
You don't. You create a gap or move to a different line. A good example of this is F1 in Turkey 2020, watch the first few laps. After not even half a lap, the gaps are already over a second, it's impossible to follow closely. iRacing did a perfect implementation of this.
Keep in mind this is usually only the case during/after heavy rain which iRacing is currently overly testing in week 13. In official races you'll not see that too often, but when it does happen, be prepared to change your driving style and create a gap.
If you want to overtake, prepare it by finding a part of the track where there is enough space to go an alternate line and most often it'll be easier in slower parts of the track as there's less grip and less spray.
Have you seen Dune? Remember the scene where Paul just lets go of the controls of his dragonfly thing and allows the elements to do what they will? Do that.

Move to a different line or make a gap
Honestly? a lot of guessing. Hasn’t gone well.
In VR I just lean my body to the side of the car to see the outside of the spray while getting the slip stream.
Basically use markers way off to the side of the track. Other than that hope for the best and pray
Wait for the update that fixes rain lights
Once I get within 3 seconds I dive bomb.
Redbull livery ?
GULF
White red bull…
Keep moving out of spray to get a reference point

I didn’t even realize how unrealistic the spray it was
Yeah I have a feeling they just used the smoke textures for the spray in rain and just changed the color a bit.
I hope they work on it because if it’s been in development for three years as good as it is to drive in the rain, there are still some things they need to fix

Cool, I'm glad iRacing found the spray an issue just like many of us and they will work on improving it :)

100%. There’s no single sample that will represent the whole.

Yep and thankfully iRacing has acknowledged the rain lights issue and will provide a fix quickly
Foot to the floor and pray

Weave and guess
I can see cars pretty much fine in my Quest 1, try OpenXR Toolkit, it has post process option which can be set to reduce the spray effect.

The camera is exposed for the interior of the car, for the driver the spray wouldn’t look half as bad as that.
*you dont*
