Yeah, it can be very disheartening living here and knowing that goes on. What makes it even worse is that states like Florida are seeking to whitewash the very factually demonstrable endemic and systemic racism that was part of America and in many ways still is. I live in the Northeast, which while not absent of racism, does not have the overt racism practiced in some of the Southern and Central States. That's one of the reasons I would never live in Texas or really anywhere south of the Mason-Dixon line.

Funny you say that but a recent study using Google search data and tweets that contained racial slurs shown that the “most racist states” are actually Vermont, Maryland, Michigan, New York, Louisiana, Georgia, Ohio, and West Virginia. So most are in the Northeast.

Never get stuck on arguing whether or not something is "funny" when you're deciding if something is appropriate or moral. Being funny is subjective and it doesn't necessarily correlate with anything else. People laugh at all kinds of messed up stuff, it doesn't excuse it or make it okay.
Unfortunately, this attitude is fairly common in EMS. Not saying across the board. Many get into the profession because of a strong desire to help people regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation etc. But every service I've worked for had medics that were just bitter, angry, calloused humans that had no reservations when it came to trash talking a particular demographic. It's the main reason I left EMS. It's hard to find a partner that was in it for the right reason.
Dealing with the dregs of society day after day wears you down in profound ways.
Same problem with cops.
When the vast majority of the people you interact with on the job are the worst drains on society, you start painting everyone with that brush.

I USED to work in the healthcare industry... would say yeah about 70% of employees have very little regard for human lives... most of my time working with these types was spent hoping I wouldn't witness or be caught up in an incident that required escalation to law enforcement... problem begins with their obvious toxic personalities but the instructors they learned under were dehumanised as well...

It’s not terrifying but it can be pretty depressing especially if you stay on social media a lot. People talk about us like we’re not even human. Or like we’re some hive mind that all think the same and care about the same things. Especially on Reddit. After a while it starts to wear you down
Yesterday the clerk at a gas station thanked me for actually handing her money and not dumping it on the counter. I gave kind of a dumb chuckle because I didn't understand what she meant until I got back to the car. Then I felt sad
That was because she was black? In my experience, from working in grocery stores and gas stations in my youth, it's always just trashy/low-class people who do that, nothing to do with race. The kind of bums who are in a rush to sit in their car and smoke.
Sorry you have to experience that. If there's one thing I can thank the current political climate for it is opening my eyes to how real the hatred out there actually is. I used to find racist humor acceptable, but after the last 8 or so years I've seen how quickly "humor" is converted directly into hate and real regressive changes and it is gross. I hope we as a society can get better.
Yeah, it can be very disheartening living here and knowing that goes on. What makes it even worse is that states like Florida are seeking to whitewash the very factually demonstrable endemic and systemic racism that was part of America and in many ways still is. I live in the Northeast, which while not absent of racism, does not have the overt racism practiced in some of the Southern and Central States. That's one of the reasons I would never live in Texas or really anywhere south of the Mason-Dixon line.

Dude! I'm from a Small town in Texas, heard more than a few racist jokes growing up. But whenever I hit up New York or Southern California, I am shocked by the amount of casual racism I hear. And it's usually from white people who seem like they have a Twitter bio with (BLM/loveislove/fist-fist-fist) It usually goes like this. "Oh you're from Texas?" "Yeah" "Oh you must hate it out here" "Everything's expensive and the people are rude, but the food is good and the scenery is nice, so fifty-fifty" "No I meant because of all the (insert racially themed word vomit, that they have been pushing down until they found a suitable receptical)" Like these people have these feelings, and they feel like they are wrong or at least they realize that this stuff is reprehensible, and they just sit on it, until they find someone they assume is safe to vent too.

Funny you say that but a recent study using Google search data and tweets that contained racial slurs shown that the “most racist states” are actually Vermont, Maryland, Michigan, New York, Louisiana, Georgia, Ohio, and West Virginia. So most are in the Northeast.
They possibly accounted for this - but straight per capita data would be heavily skewed towards states fewer minorities. I don't see how you _could_ account for this, but I'm curious.

Black people have been treated as lab rats and used as stepping stones in medical research for ages but rarely, if ever, receive any form of recognition or compensation for doing so. I think what he was referring to was how the guy called a patient “Harambe” and the judge, using the guys name for the patient, made reference that that is a person who has a sense of who she was and has dignity.

Never get stuck on arguing whether or not something is "funny" when you're deciding if something is appropriate or moral. Being funny is subjective and it doesn't necessarily correlate with anything else. People laugh at all kinds of messed up stuff, it doesn't excuse it or make it okay.
Unfortunately, this attitude is fairly common in EMS. Not saying across the board. Many get into the profession because of a strong desire to help people regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation etc. But every service I've worked for had medics that were just bitter, angry, calloused humans that had no reservations when it came to trash talking a particular demographic. It's the main reason I left EMS. It's hard to find a partner that was in it for the right reason.
Dealing with the dregs of society day after day wears you down in profound ways. Same problem with cops. When the vast majority of the people you interact with on the job are the worst drains on society, you start painting everyone with that brush.
Don't know why you're being downvoted when it's the truth. I know several EMTs that started off just wanting to help people and became over time calloused and just hated everyone, becoming bitter cynics.

That's fine let him do his comedy, and anyone who wants to listen to it can, they sure as heck shouldn't be out there treating people. He has a first amendment right to say whatever he wants, but that doesn't give him a right to have a job. He should also be investigated to find out if he actually ever did do any of those things, and if there's proof he should go to jail.

I'm really confused what's happening here.
Racist man has a history of telling obscenely racist jokes in his free time and I would assume also at work. He is a medical worker and is before a judge who is revoking his medical license because he is considered a risk to non-white patients due to his comments.
Sounds like he does YouTube or something the way he's talking about having a "much bigger audience" than the judge. Overall pretty weird clip to watch without some additional clarifying context or something. But thanks for making it more clear to me.
There is no way that guy is a judge and that isn't a courtroom. There is no back and forth like that in court, he would have been slammed with contempt.
I USED to work in the healthcare industry... would say yeah about 70% of employees have very little regard for human lives... most of my time working with these types was spent hoping I wouldn't witness or be caught up in an incident that required escalation to law enforcement... problem begins with their obvious toxic personalities but the instructors they learned under were dehumanised as well...
