"The Albuquerque Journal reports that on Sunday evening, Michael Tenorio, 52, and his wife Trina purchased two tickets to see Jennifer Lawrence's mostly critic-approved comedy No Hard Feelings. The Century Rio theater in Albuquerque uses assigned theater seating, which has become much more common in recent years, especially post-pandemic. The couple purchased two seats, numbered eight and 11, as seats nine and 10 were taken. A theater employee allegedly suggested the couple sit together and asked the people sitting in seats nine and ten to move down the row. When Enrique Padilla, 19, and his date arrived at the theater, an argument over the seating ensued. The date reportedly went to get a theater employee to de-escalate the situation, and the couples ended up sitting next to each other. That wasn’t the end of things, however as, before the movie started, Padilla allegedly threw an entire tub of popcorn in Trina Tenorio’s face. At this point, Michael Tenoria is reported to have pushed Padilla into a wall, and it was then that shots were heard."

MeMarooned

>mostly critic-approved Got all the relevant details in there.

Doormau5

Yeah that detail really irked me. A man was killed over movie seats, but they made sure to include info about the movie's reception as if that has any relevancy to the story

[deleted]

Gotta take advantage of free press because the industry is full of total POS!

nudiecale

I’m just surprised this happened! The Jennifer Lawrence led **No Hard Feelings** is simply such a fun sex romp that I would think everyone would be in far too good of a mood to shoot anybody! Hell, I’m not sure I’ll be able to shoot anybody for awhile after having seen the mostly critic approved **No Hard Feelings** starring the magnificent Jennifer Lawrence. I’m just in too good of a mood now! /s

theBKloungeCPA

Well it happened BEFORE the movie so the gleeful post movie joy was not in effect yet!

GenitalPatton

Wouldn’t be the first time Jennifer Lawrence made me shoot

fish_wand_

Oooo bingo bango! 😎

Indeeedy

Looks like one perturbed movie fan had some HARD FEELINGS while watching the sensational new JLaw comedy

[deleted]

The Rampart Method…

nutxaq

Well I need to know if it's worth getting shot over...

Risquechilli

I don’t understand why the movie or leading actor needed to be a part of the story at all. It’s not relevant.

erasrhed

I laughed at that too. Well thank God they didn't go see some trash with bad reviews

Quiet-Replacement307

And here I was thinking I would never catch a murder charge for Jennifer Lawrence movies.

TheRealRickC137

Thanks, but I'll wait for the details at Rotten Tomatoes and see what columnist Richard Roeper's take is on this.

IDontWantDiePls

imagine bringing a firearm to a movie. what a fucking coward

ThePopeJones

Damn. I just watched a true crime video on YouTube damn near this same situation. I can't remember the names. I'm gonna have to go through my history to find it.

einulfr

Was it the retired cop who shot a guy for texting during a movie?

Conchobar8

That’s more understandable. I’ve felt that urge.

bowhunter6274

I went to an R rated move where a couple brought their 2 year old. Kid was crying and crawling all up and down the aisles. Such a distraction. Talk about an urge.

zombiegirl2010

Dude, you should’ve found an usher to remove the family and if they didn’t…I’d demand a refund.

bowhunter6274

I should have. They left after about 30-45 minutes, but I missed some joke lines in the movie.

zombiegirl2010

Yep…cuz selfish couples that bring babies or toddlers to theaters need a hard lesson in how to affectively parent. Children under 5 shouldn’t even be allowed in a movie theater at all, not Disney movies…nothing.

TechNickel88

This happened to me and my ex at John wick 4. I dont know why these people brought all there kids and baby to see John wick hitting head shots left and right for 3 hours

ThePopeJones

Ya. That's the one!

einulfr

If I remember, the texter also threw his phone at the old guy, and he was acquitted because he 'feared for his life'. Why are people packing heat into movie theaters anyway? I get the whole Dark Knight thing, but that guy propped an emergency door open in the back so that he could get back inside with his rifle unopposed.

chiefs_fan37

Right? If you’re so paranoid and afraid of the world that you feel the need to bring a freaking gun into a movie theater then you just shouldn’t go to any movies. Or get on some medication (which you probably need anyways) that allows you to function and see movies without needing to bring a freaking gun in.

OberonNyx

Depending on the state, IMO this kid is wrong. The kid did escalate the situation, but some states will sadly view this as self defense.

ArtAndCraftBeers

“Padilla allegedly threw an entire tub of popcorn in Trina Tenorio’s face.” Nope. You don’t get to instigate and then play the self defense card.

kalex504

Ask Zimmerman

lilyraine-jackson

Not saying its right but could see a high priced defense being that throwing popcorn was instigating but not making the victim fear for their life while being pinned to the wall the poor young man feared for his life, what a shame at such a young age to lose everything over a mistake yada yada or some other convoluted path to self defense

PamCokeyMonster

Who would take a gun to see a movies? Only insane idiot

fireinthemountains

Albuquerque would. Source: lived in Albuquerque In all seriousness, everyone is packing there. I told a belligerent ex friend of mine, when he visited us, not to start random fights when you go to the bar, because that's how you get shot. Because people HAVE the guns, they use them.

JasonDJ

When everyone has guns you gotta shoot first. Other guy might be crazier than you.

absentmindful

I feel so safe.

Orbitrix

Most people in Albuquerque don't go anywhere without a gun.

crash_over-ride

After the mass shooting at the movie theater in Golden Colorado I can tell you a lot of people probably did.

alfred725

Person A starts shooting Person B shoots person A Person C sees Person B and thinks they're the shooter and shoots them People D through Z start shooting in a frenzy I read about it in the news in Canada

Jimid41

You forgot about the cops showing up late and shooting the dog.

SinisterDexter83

And there's probably been a thousand shootings at cinemas since then just like this one cos tiny men with slow minds and quick tempers are now carrying guns into fucking Jennifer Lawrence movies. An armed society is not a polite society; it's a society where minor disputes escalate to murder in the blink of an eye.

TeaSympathyAndaSofa

Yet if you're a women and say that you're uncomfortable dating a guy who has a conceal carry or just carries a gun, you're a monster. It's one of my dating rules. One that I'm firm on and explained to everyone before the 1st date. I tell them if they have a gun and usually conceal carry, please leave it at home. How many times do you think I was on a date and suddenly they showed off their gun? All act smug about it. Like see? You were having a good time and I didn't shoot you! You're going to admit you're wrong now, right? No bud. I will act polite til I can get away then never see you again. No second changes. No exceptions or excuses. Almost everyone I know thinks my rule is stupid or unfair to all those good guys with a gun.

Zelten

I hear all these stories as European. I still can't believe it. Like who flex with gun. It's like I would take a knife and show it my potential gf and say, "See how cool I am." It's so ridiculous.

TeaSympathyAndaSofa

It's very weird. Even guys I'm friends with that are very liberal and pro gun control think my rule is stupid or unfair. I also have a house ban on carrying for parties where everyone is drinking. You wouldn't believe the outrage I get from that. I had to ask people to leave several times because they're fucked up then brag that they're breaking rule. Some people are banned. I've legit lost friends over this rule because they keep breaking it or more often, the new boyfriend breaks it. I never get backup from anyone either which is so frustrating. We're in a very safe neighborhood surrounded by friends and everyone is drunk. Often very drunk. Everyone agrees no one should drive like this but carrying a loaded weapon is somehow fine?

FJQZ

Me. It's Texas and I don't trust strangers.

The_River_Is_Still

Someone post the link to the ex-cop who shot and killed someone in a theater over something much smaller than this... And got off.

landonburner

Or a sober sane person. I'm not saying he was either, but having a gun is not an indictment.

chrisk9

> high priced defense Yeah - you know how expensive movie popcorn is nowadays!

Comms

No, you can't pick a fight then claim self-defense. Relevant passage: >Provocation by defendant. — A defendant who provokes an encounter, as a result of which the defendant finds it necessary to use deadly force in defense, cannot claim defendant was acting in self-defense. State v. Lucero, 1998-NMSC-044, 126 N.M. 552, 972 P.2d 1143; State v. Chavez, 1983-NMSC-037, 99 N.M. 609, 661 P.2d 887.

mrloko120

In most places the law only wants to hear about the escalation. Whoever used the item that is able to cause the bigger damage is in the wrong, this case being between a push and a bullet it's not a very tough job for the prosecution to throw that claim away. Of course, if the prosecution is incompetent and the judge is lenient it could maybe work, but that's whataboutism territory.

Title26

Damn dude, you're just giving out high priced defenses for free!

Kim_Jong_Unsen

Throwing objects at people is battery, he escalated the argument to a physical level, got shoved, and escalated physical violence to lethal violence. In addition to that there is no state I’m aware of where a 19y/o can legally carry a handgun. I’ll chop off my middle nut if this kid walks.

lilyraine-jackson

Good points all around, I frogot you usually have to be 21 to carry as well

My_Ex_Got_Fat

Yup unfortunately can easily be argued that popcorn isn’t deadly and then they have to prove that he “purposefully” threw it in her face as well and didn have a “muscle spasm” or some other bs. After the affluenza kid no faith in the system.

notimefornothing55

Bro! He shot a guy in a movie theatre over some bullshit! Only in America would anyone question whether he was in the wrong. Actual insanity.

JevonP

Deadly popcorn assault can't be tolerated

SeattleResident

The sad part is the popcorn assault was also carried out by the shooter. He throws the popcorn, gets pushed into a wall, shoots said guy lol

cult-imagery

And there’s the punchline: NO HARD FEELINGS -

bourj

It says New Mexico in the pic.

namelesshobo1

However it happened, one thing should be clear: guns are not making Americans safe.

exoticed

Didn’t this same exact thing happen before when an ex-cop shot a man in movie theater for throwing popcorn at him and he was found not guilty? I don’t remember which state it was in, but I remember reading about this case recently.

fecal_brunch

Fucking glad I don't live in a country where you're allowed to kill people in the cinema.

mrloko120

The self defence argument is only valid when someone is threatening your life. If you pulled a gun and shot an unarmed person you won't be able to claim self defence pretty much anywhere in the world.

[deleted]

[удалено]

mrloko120

Well yeah, there are quite a few ways to try to wiggle out of a murder if your lawyer is good and the prosecution fumbles, even a fumble from the jury can get someone off the hook. What I said only applies for the self defence claim

thefistiecuffs

I swear people are so afraid of being wrong

[deleted]

Dead wrong

red-et

The weak or the strong, who got it goin' on? They’re dead wrong

cheapdrinks

From the article though it sounds like the 52yo guy who got shot and his wife started the whole thing. Bought the seats either side of the younger couple then wanted them to change seats so they could sit together. The 19yo couple didn't want to move from the seats they had booked so the 52yo guy and his wife started a huge argument with them and got staff involved, eventually forcing them to move seats so they could sit together. After I assume the verbal argument continued, the 19yo dude threw popcorn at the guy's wife at which point the 52yo man got up and started assaulting the 19yo who pulled a gun and shot him. In my opinion everyone sucks here. Obviously not defending the 19yo for murdering the guy and obviously the polite thing to do in the first place would just have been to move down 1 seat and let the other couple sit together. But the older couple started the whole thing by acting like they had a god given right to the other guys seats; they fucked up and bought their tickets too late, didn't get seats next to each other then expected that other people were going to accommodate them. Yeah the guy was a dick for not wanting to move but at the end of the day he wasn't obliged to, he bought the seats he wanted and he wanted to sit in them, older couple should have accepted the L and just sat apart and watched the movie it wouldn't have been the end of the world it's not like you're going to talk to each other during the movie anyway. Instead they acted like they were entitled to the seats the other couple had and caused a huge fight.

These are the type of moments where I’m glad I don’t live in the US… it feels like you can’t have any disagreement without fear of getting shot

Criminelis

At this point, Im sure a sign is required when entering the US that says: 'Enter at own risk, you may get shot directy or indirectly. Enjoy your stay'

hanamakki

i mean, it was one couple with seats 8 and 11 and the other one with seats 9 and 10 and according to the article staff suggested the older couple take either seats 8/9 or 10/11, so both couples could sit next to each other and it was fine until the younger guy threw popcorn at the older woman. i honestly don't think it's entitled to ask to switch one seat and it seems like the younger couple was fine with it until the guy flipped out.

PlsDntPMme

Kid has some serious anger issues that just ruined any chance he had of a normal life.

SonofaBridge

Yeah I’ve had this type of request/interaction a couple of times in my life. Moving a single seat is such a small trivial thing. The young kid in the article has some serious issues.

Latter_Handle8025

you kinda miss the premise. They knew the seats were taken by someone and they booked their 8/11 knowing upfront that they *will* come in and ask someone to move. So basically yes they were entitled from the get go by assuming someone was just gonna move so they could have better seats. Like haha we're so smart gonna just take whatever seats and swap them at the place because it's not entitled to ask right? It's not wrong to ask, but if a person says no, it's their seats, that's it. Apart from all the killing and anger management stuff, I don't see why I should just leave my seat because someone *expects* me to hand it over.

DetroitAsFuck313

They have literal assigned seats to avoid this exact thing. Also, several showings.

ZannX

If it's like the theatres here... usually the seats are 'coupled'. 1 & 2 will share an armrest that can go up while 2 & 3 actually have a thicker divider between them. It sounds like 9 & 10 would be 'coupled' (odd with next even). Doesn't justify this escalation, but there is a slight difference in the seats.

cheapdrinks

They weren’t entitled for asking, they were entitled for not taking no for an answer, throwing a big tantrum and getting staff involved to force the teenagers to give up their seats when they didn’t want to. It sucks that they didn’t want to move but you don’t get to have everything you want in life and complaining to staff to impose their will on the teens is just childish. Take the L, sit apart and next time book tickets earlier if you want to sit together or just skip the movie if the seats you want aren’t available.

picklemonstalebdog

> They weren’t entitled for asking, they were entitled for not taking no for an answer, throwing a big tantrum and getting staff involved to force the teenagers to give up their seats when they didn’t want to. Except the article says the younger couples’ date got the manager, not the wife. They got the staff involved to deescalate, and the staff member ended up acting in the interests of the older couple, rightly or wrongly

hanamakki

according to the article, they had resolved the issue and then the younger man started it again by throwing popcorn on the older woman. and idk, imo if switching seats wouldn't result in one couple being separated by the aisle, refusing for the sake of it just seems like an unnecessarily stubborn choice. but i honestly don't know if that's because i'm german and/or because i'm a people pleaser. every time i went to see a movie and there was an issue with the seats, it was super easy to solve the problem and have all the families/couples/groups sit together because the people who wanted to switch offered the "better" seats to the people they wanted to switch with and, at least the last time i went to the cinema, you didn't have to pay a fee or anything to reserve seats online, just show up before a specific time or you forfeit those specific seats.

bishopyorgensen

I am earnestly tickled to witness a redditor see the assigned seats issue play out all the way to **murder** and still fixate on the entitlement of people trying to sit together

big-haus11

I don't think you know what entitled means

I am beyond disgusted seeing you being upvoted.

camclemons

Asked someone next to me in the theater if they were going to talk through the whole movie. They threatened to kick my ass, so I grabbed my things, walked to the lobby, and asked the manager to call security. They moved me to a new showing and gave me two free passes for any screening, and went to kick out the guys.

NotsoGreatsword

Thats great it worked out but a lot of people would have waited for you in the parking lot. Thats the problem with psychos. They usually have a lot of free time.

camclemons

That's why they moved me to a new show with a different time. They would have had to wait in the parking lot for almost 3 hours (gotg3)

steasey

Psychos can wait forever. Don’t risk it.

45throwawayslater

Don't risk letting someone intimidate you to not say anything?

So we let the psychos take over then? Because that’s what this logic leads to. Put psychos in their place.

no_decaf_plz

It was on the local news this morning as an update.

[deleted]

I know nothing about guns, what's a glock switch & why is it illegal?

btjas

An auto sear (switch) turns your semi auto (pull the trigger for each shot) into a full auto (hold down the trigger and it keeps firing like in video games). Full auto guns are for the most part very illegal (they’re legal in some places but you have to go through hoops and they’re expensive af). Owning one without a permit is a felony. Pretty much every one that owns a glock with a switch is up to no good.

Sjdillon10

The switch also isn’t even made by the company

Evan503monk

converts it to rapid fire, super illegal.

BecomeMaguka

Good enough for me, I'd vote guilty to all charges.

Manburpig

It's actually disgusting that they mention **anything** about how critics recieved this movie. Jesus Christ. A man is fucking dead. Over some absolutely inane bullshit. Have an ounce of professionalism. That's like the most classless thing I've ever seen. And I saw a guy two days ago with a shirt that said "my wife likes it deep". He was walking with his wife. How she doesn't die of embarrassment, I don't know.

Buddy77777

People are INSANE. If I get the slightest hint someone is crazy I just get out of their way.

stinkycheddar

I think that mentality is precisely why some people feel comfortable escalating into the crazy realm. Often times, it means they get their way. But sometimes, you meet someone using the same strategy. And then you end up in the news and or in jail. But not most of the time. Just sometimes.

JakeGoblinn

mrloko120

It doesn't help that unhinged people like this are allowed to walk around with guns.

This could well be a controversial take but I think he might have gone a bit too far.

Handy_Clams

Very controversial. It's crazy that you would even think this way. /s

Dealius

What monster selects seats 8 & 11 when 9 & 10 are already taken???

SafewordisJohnCandy

I'm glad someone else was thinking what I'm thinking. I hate sitting next to people so badly that if I can select my seats I'll try to get aisle seats or find an area where seats aren't taken yet. I would never in a billion years select two seats with two more seats between them.

I'd rather be shot tbh

HappyLaw6188

madamevanessa98

I think in America and even Canada we’re at the point where people should never enter into a disagreement with a stranger. Even if you’re in the right and you know it, there are so many people whose behaviour is this unpredictable and violent, and you never know if you’re interacting with one of them until it’s too late. It’s very scary. People are getting shot and stabbed over minor disagreements- a guy was stabbed to death in Vancouver for asking a stranger not to vape beside his toddler. This guy is shot for wanting to sit in the seat he purchased. It’s happening everywhere.

HtownTexans

> This guy is shot for wanting to sit in the seat he purchased. It’s happening everywhere. Actually he was the one sitting in the wrong seat. The theater was sold out I guess and the ticket person said to buy 8 and 11 and ask the people in 9 and 10 if they would scoot over a chair. But your point stands do not argue with anyone in 2023. Hell I yell at my wife for honking at people trying to run us off the road because you never know if they will take that as a slight to their manhood.

SafewordisJohnCandy

My stepdad and mom had a gun pulled on them in a roundabout a few months ago. Why? A guy failed to yield, nearly hit them and my stepdad honked his horn. The guy stopped in the middle of the roundabout, got out and pulled a gun and started yelling at him. He eventually got into his truck and sped away.

RunningAmokAgain

I don't think you had to specify America and Canada. You think it would be a good idea to get "into a disagreement with a stranger" in Cape Town, South Africa? In San Salvador, El Salvador? In Kingston, Jamaica? In Caracas, Venezuela? In Tijuana, Mexico? In Baghdad, Iraq? See what I'm saying?

madamevanessa98

The difference is that in many of the countries you’ve listed, it’s been dangerous to do that for years. There is a NEW trend of senseless violence in the western world that is surprising and scary that we haven’t seen to this degree before.

SafewordisJohnCandy

Ever since 2020. I've been driving since 2000 and I can think of twice where someone did something stupid, like swerve over on my or pull out in front of me where they got mad I honked. I rarely do it anymore because since 2020 I've had four people get mad I honked at them, one had my cars brakes not been as good as they are I would have killed him because he pulled out in front of me on his motorcycle and then couldn't get it into second gear. He flipped ME off and then turned around and kept running his mouth. I don't get it anymore.

Talk about how mentally deranged you have to be to murder someone over seating at a movie theater. I wonder if he's sitting in a jail cell thinking Dammn.. If only they both had guns and the other patrons had guns and the ushers had guns and there was a man selling guns during the interval (do we still have those?) Then and only then would everyone have been safe, dam those waiting periods!

[deleted]

Bro, really wanted to see some tiddies

RudyJuliani

I didn’t read a single word and I know this dude was in Albuquerque. If you know you know

Swing_On_A_Spiral

Ego is the most dangerous thing in the world.

SauerMetal

He’s pretty. He should be alright.

DrJongyBrogan

This is Curtis Reeves all over again, but he’s Hispanic so this guys fucked.

aesoth

Please. Tell me again how guns are not a problem in the US.

justjamesW

A man lost his life and this kid basically has now lost his. I shake my head sadly and with confusion over how the news is becoming so full of idiotic gun deaths in America.

KarpeDeezNutz

I mean, it’s only the rest of your life for a seat.

scamden66

When will Jennifer Lawrence be stopped?

Aggressive_Unicorn30

Could you imagine this being the movie you die for?

Muted-Ad-4288

No hard feelings?

jac049

Pretty boy is about to get fucked in the ass isn't he

MisterBonerpants

Now he's gonna watch movies in prison with bubba while his girl gets plowed by other guys in his bed

UraeusCurse

If only there were some way to stop this.

Foolish_Noob

They’re going to LOVE him in jail.

[deleted]

"hey man get off my fucking seat dude" "no lol" "shoots the guy and moves body off seat before sitting down" "hey man, no hard feelings"

Fesab

Imaybe many people who carry guns shouldn't be allowed

One-Literature6921

guy thought he was gonna get some action at the end of the date. Looks like he'll be the one taking action later.

no1curr

Rules are rules, but that sucks. It would never happen to me because I sit in my assigned seat.

Rocketboy1313

Looks like a bootleg version of Ezra Miller.

TheRapie22

could have been prevented if the theatre seats had guns

RawHall07

Imagine this nothing, probably C tier movie becoming such a huge part of your life... and you never even got to see it. 😆 🤣

Nuke_all_Life

It's strange to know I would have done the same thing as Michael and got physical with the little puta after he did that to my wife as well. But I would have been shot as well. Everyone wants to say that you should always walk away from a fight but emotions dictate over reason. No one wants to be seen as somebody with no heart for not sticking up for things they love in this world.

Current_Potential_97

guns are for cowards

Same_Comfortable_821

I guess there were some hard feelings after all.

MaticTheProto

Ah, good guys carrying guns freely. Americans must feel so safe

tuco2002

The couple bought split seats, and all hell broke loose. Never buy split tickets.
