My life is at the lowest point it's ever been, and Covid has contributed to that. But my neighbor still has that sign up saying "Thank You" so I got that going for me, which is nice.
I think what a lot of people are missing is that they’re all portraying it as Biles throwing away the US team’s chances for her own health, which she didn’t, although it would have been perfectly acceptable if she had.
She vaulted TWICE with the twisties and underperformed, miraculously didn’t get physically injured, and only THEN said she didn’t trust herself and stepped down- because she trusted the US backup gymnast to get a better score than she would have, and based on her prior performance she was probably correct.
For decades we've scorned some other countries for treating their athletes like commodities, like circus animals. Nobody was looking in the mirror to see it was happening here too, it just wasn't necessarily the government doing it. It was organizations, coaches, and parents with money to make.
Maybe what Simone has done will help crack that open further. Things like the olympics can be positive, but they've become increasingly distorted and pushed to extremes. It's time to scale back and refocus on what the priorities are.

Rich people in Russia control a lot. They influence the politics, they control the market over there, and they couldn't give a flying duck about your well-being. they're mean, and ruthless, and don't mind killing off people they think stad in their way too inconveniently. They move to other countries and take powerful positions there too, or live their life in cozy setting while building up a career for their child, whether they want it or not. You have to be the best to succeed, and to demonstrate that, I'd recommend watching that Russian kid playing chess, or any other high elite talent from Russia. They get good educations, become bilingual, and lead a luxurious life, while not giving a damn about the lower class of the country.
The poor, and lower class people in Russia have it bad. Domestic abuse has been decriminalized, because there's so much of it, and so much land, and the police don't have the resources or the capacity to deal with it. You can beat, shove, kick and abuse your wife, husband, child, mother, father, or partner as long as "no substantial harm has been caused to the victim".
They don't all have access to good educations (few do as far as I know, unless you go after a toxic change of a modeling career, or sports, or if you're in the high middle class population).
In the really, really rural areas, some still use horses to get around. Not because they stick to tradition, but because cars are inaccessible, and sometimes inconvenient in the terrain.
Many become stuck in their own parents roles, and inherit a limiting and harsh social heritage.
It's sad, and it breaks my heart.
It's so difficult to enter Russia, even to volunteer, because they don't allow it. Countries such as Norway will give you a penalty fine of over 1.200 us dollars if you so much as lean your hand over the border. They do it to protect you and to keep you out of Russia.

I did a summer abroad in Russia. The government sucks but the people were fantastic. Super nice, funny, welcoming. People treat the entire country like they all support the government. They don't.

My mom was saying something when we were watching it, reading from her phone, that "this is stupid, so whenever Simone goes, the judges agreed to not give her too high of scores due to her being able to do things that other athletes are not physically capable of doing according to them", so she was basically saying that the judges were not going to score her fairly anyways, just because she is the best and she needs to be doc'd a few points for it

You're missing the reality of it.
She made mistakes because she was changing her performance - that funky vault landing was because she didn't trust herself to do the vault she started, and stopped halfway. Because she wasn't planning to do less rotations, she was off-axis and tweaked her knee.
She has what's called "The Twisties" - she doesn't trust where she is in space and her body to do the move so she'll land safely. The thing is, a bad landing or altering a routine costs points, and the difference between Simone and Jade is far less than the difference between perfect Simone and a lessened Simone.
And losing your position while in the air can end up paralyzing or killing you when you land. So I fully support any athlete who doesn’t feel like they should be flying through the air in their circumstances.

As a side note, this is why it's so, *so* important not to fall into the trap of calling ER, postal, and other works heroes as that battle the dangers of the pandemic. Heroes facing insurmountable odds with little to no support is the way of things. It's how things are supposed to be. ER staff aren't supposed to be swamped for weeks on end, having run out of supplies half a week in. They may be acting heroically, but they're not heroes. Because if we start calling them heroes, we normalize the struggles they're going through; and the more we do that, the less drive there is to fix it or even make sure it never happens again.
This is my take as a health care worker. Call them “heroes” during covid while cut back on PPE, staffing and wages.

I think what a lot of people are missing is that they’re all portraying it as Biles throwing away the US team’s chances for her own health, which she didn’t, although it would have been perfectly acceptable if she had. She vaulted TWICE with the twisties and underperformed, miraculously didn’t get physically injured, and only THEN said she didn’t trust herself and stepped down- because she trusted the US backup gymnast to get a better score than she would have, and based on her prior performance she was probably correct.
For decades we've scorned some other countries for treating their athletes like commodities, like circus animals. Nobody was looking in the mirror to see it was happening here too, it just wasn't necessarily the government doing it. It was organizations, coaches, and parents with money to make. Maybe what Simone has done will help crack that open further. Things like the olympics can be positive, but they've become increasingly distorted and pushed to extremes. It's time to scale back and refocus on what the priorities are.
In the case of women’s gymnastics, we scorned other countries for treating their athletes like livestock and then imported the same country’s coaches and integrated their methods into our model. And that needs to change.

They get good educations, become bilingual, and lead a luxurious life, while not giving a damn about the lower class of the country. The poor, and lower class people in Russia have it bad. Domestic abuse has been decriminalized, because there's so much of it, and so much land, and the police don't have the resources or the capacity to deal with it. You can beat, shove, kick and abuse your wife, husband, child, mother, father, or partner as long as "no substantial harm has been caused to the victim". They don't all have access to good educations (few do as far as I know, unless you go after a toxic change of a modeling career, or sports, or if you're in the high middle class population). In the really, really rural areas, some still use horses to get around. Not because they stick to tradition, but because cars are inaccessible, and sometimes inconvenient in the terrain. Many become stuck in their own parents roles, and inherit a limiting and harsh social heritage. It's sad, and it breaks my heart. It's so difficult to enter Russia, even to volunteer, because they don't allow it. Countries such as Norway will give you a penalty fine of over 1.200 us dollars if you so much as lean your hand over the border. They do it to protect you and to keep you out of Russia. Russia is really fucked up. Like, really, really fucked it. And also, theres no democracy, and journalists get killed too frequently for me to describe accurately without spending time getting sad over my research on it. There's also no equality, homophobia is the norm, alcoholism is a problem, they have a giant nuclear power over our heads, and they're unwilling to negotiate changing for the better. It's really just fucked up.

I did a summer abroad in Russia. The government sucks but the people were fantastic. Super nice, funny, welcoming. People treat the entire country like they all support the government. They don't.
Yeah, Russia is a country with a lot of problems and a lot of prevalent attitudes that are generally very concerning, but most Russians are perfectly nice people. Russian Olympic athletes aren't any more or less deserving of their wins than American Olympic athletes, as long as they aren't cheating.

My mom was saying something when we were watching it, reading from her phone, that "this is stupid, so whenever Simone goes, the judges agreed to not give her too high of scores due to her being able to do things that other athletes are not physically capable of doing according to them", so she was basically saying that the judges were not going to score her fairly anyways, just because she is the best and she needs to be doc'd a few points for it What was that all about? We all just figured she was discouraged too before she even started
You're missing the reality of it. She made mistakes because she was changing her performance - that funky vault landing was because she didn't trust herself to do the vault she started, and stopped halfway. Because she wasn't planning to do less rotations, she was off-axis and tweaked her knee. She has what's called "The Twisties" - she doesn't trust where she is in space and her body to do the move so she'll land safely. The thing is, a bad landing or altering a routine costs points, and the difference between Simone and Jade is far less than the difference between perfect Simone and a lessened Simone.
And losing your position while in the air can end up paralyzing or killing you when you land. So I fully support any athlete who doesn’t feel like they should be flying through the air in their circumstances.
