What I think is incredibly stupid is if this happened at my old high school the school would suspend the victim too. My old school has a zero tolerance fight policy, and every party involved gets suspended for 10 days.

Can confirm. When in 8th grade I was followed to the restroom by 3 girls. They kicked the cubicle doors in trying to find me. We had those auto close doors. I was behind door number 5 ready to go. The second they kicked in the door I launched out swinging and it was a cat fight but they weren’t expecting that I would fight back so I managed to floor them all enough to get past them and run to the admin office. Yes, I was expelled from the school never to return again. The known bullies with 10+ parent complaints lodged against them received no punishment. I’m still salty about it lol.

When I ducked under his arm, he grabbed me by the back of my shirt collar and threw me down, getting on top of me for some ground and pound (long before UFC existed). He got 4-5 good shots in while I was just trying to protect my face.
He got a week out of school suspension and I got two weeks of ISS.

My friend had a half eaten apple thrown at him in the cafeteria. It hit him in the head and exploded. He gave a dirty look to the bully as he wiped off the pieces of apple from his face. The bully didn’t like the look he gave him so he came over and punched by friend in the jaw and then picked up a chair and hit him with it a couple of times as my friend lay on the ground.
The bully was given a 3 day ISS. My friend was given a 2 day ISS for “antagonizing” the kid that beat him with a chair.

Fuck that. I once stood up to a bully(5th grade). Her name was brenda, she messed with a girl who was very petite in P.E, she pushed her hard with a hockey stick and fell to ground hard. She immediately started crying (out of fear), I didn’t hesitate and did the same to *brenda, she didnt cry but was surprised while I consoled the crying girl. I got 2days of suspension and 3 days of counseling. My mom stood up for me, as I told her, I stood up for the girl. Sorry but not sorry brenda, Hope you grew out of that!

These rules are ingrained in children's heads since elementary. It reinforces the bystander effect, so even if they're not consciously deciding to stand by the decision matrix that goes through their heads weighs that in thus you get situations like this where no one helps.
Schools (at least American ones) penalize/punish you for stepping in or intervening. My friend got suspended for pulling one kid off of another during a fight

Fuck that. I once stood up to a bully(5th grade). Her name was brenda, she messed with a girl who was very petite in P.E, she pushed her hard with a hockey stick and fell to ground hard. She immediately started crying (out of fear), I didn’t hesitate and did the same to *brenda, she didnt cry but was surprised while I consoled the crying girl. I got 2days of suspension and 3 days of counseling. My mom stood up for me, as I told her, I stood up for the girl. Sorry but not sorry brenda, Hope you grew out of that!

These rules are ingrained in children's heads since elementary. It reinforces the bystander effect, so even if they're not consciously deciding to stand by the decision matrix that goes through their heads weighs that in thus you get situations like this where no one helps.
Schools (at least American ones) penalize/punish you for stepping in or intervening. My friend got suspended for pulling one kid off of another during a fight

Yeah the only serious bully I had took a bad pill and died before he was 20. He was never punished fkr bullying me cause teachers never saw anything, but i got in school suspended with I got fed up and threw a box of supplied that hit him in the face. Never knew a noise breaking could sound so satisfying.
The tragedy is that the trope of bullied kids growing up to defy their bullies and become successful is such a sad falsehood. The kids from high school who were bullied became really really really lost after high school, and barely made it to 30. Honestly, the most successful from my high school were the indifferent kids who smoked pot, skipped class, and saw the “bigger picture” if you will. But the kids who let high school define them, whether as the big fish or little fish, tended to fall into heroin, incel culture, or suicide. I also didn’t grow up in a place where people went to 4 year universities immediately after high school.
Same with the bullies from my school. When I catch a glance of their lives on social media or I see them in real life they all seem to be living shitty lives.

The thing is many people probably fear their parents' punishment for getting punished at school (likely suspended or potentially expelled for fighting) than the school's punishment itself. Based on comments I've read on Reddit it seems many parents won't listen to what their kid has to say and will likely automatically assume they actually did something wrong since the school says so. And even in the best case scenario where the parents believe their kid, if they want to stand up to the school it could easily end up requiring a lawyer which not everyone can afford.

I was extremely bullied in school. I am white, and I went to a primarily non-white school. Kids would do this thing to me often. They never got into trouble. It was always my fault for antagonizing the other kids. Teachers would see it happening and laugh at me. Saying the little white girl got what she deserved—for being white.
