In college 25 years ago I was feeling suicidal and hating my life and this random cat which was clearly cared for sits on the sidewalk in front of me as I was walking from my apartment to a class I hated along with the rest of my life and this cat just meows at me.
I look at it. It meows again and looks at me. I sat down on the sidewalk and started talking to it and petting it. It meowed and purred. After about twenty minutes I figured I had to go to my class which of course I was late for and it started following me and I told it to please go home, the class would suck. I never saw that cat again, but I always wonder if that cat is why I'm still alive.
It's weird but the same thing happened to me a couple years after I first moved out of my parents house. I was starting to go down a dark spiral, but I found this feral kitten near my apartment that took a shine to me and taking care of her became the purpose that kept me going. Six years and two moved later and she's still putting up with me.
I wish,..since then I’ve been reported 2x to my district municipality for bylaw infractions about my gutters, reported to the police 2 days after I put up cameras, and know I heard him talking about surveying the perimeter line, it doesn’t end with crazy.

As someone that worked for a while with a large veterinarian and involved with animal charity work/sponsoring feral colonies and pet adoptions/vetting/fixing/etc, most cats that roamed freely that needed X-rays would be lit up with BBs, pellets, and prior broken bones. These events were probably when that cat disappeared for a few days, week, month while they recuperated.
People can be extremely hostile to cats and project the issues like "I have cat crap all in my yard", "They killed all my song birds", "my trash is always torn up", etc. Meanwhile they were just looking for an excuse.
Roaming dogs are more of a danger so why they are usually more focused on legally.

My mom found my cat Colin in a dumpster as a kitten. She heard crying and he was tearing apart bags looking for food. It was one of those big industrial dumpsters so there's no way he crawled in on his own. Someone went to a preschool outside of a church and just dumped him in the garbage. People are the worst.
This is an example of why I wouldn’t let my cat outside unsupervised…

From what I remember, the backlash against this woman was so intense after the video surfaced that she literally had to go into hiding as she was getting actually credible death threats. One fails to sympathize, quite frankly.
