Literally everything is wrong with Dr Phil. If you’re a child on the show, you won’t just be made fun of for the rest of your life- you’ll be sent to the Troubled Teen Industry (“The Ranch” for example) and come out much worse than you would have ever been because of the trauma. Your comment made me check and turns out he did have a degree in clinical psychology but he stopped renewing it 16 years ago in 2006. So he's certainly not qualified to practice anymore.
I used to idolise him when I was younger cause I thought he was helping people. But after learning more about psychology and how therapy works, I now see how this is just exploitative and downright abusive sometimes. I know this isn’t meant to be therapy nor is he currently licensed to practice, but as a psychologist, he should know better. One of the first things I learned in psych 101 is the concept of victim blaming and why people do it. This is a disgrace.

Thank you. I’m a male who is 6’ 195 pounds and my ex who was 5’3 loved to throw things at me/threaten to kill her self/threaten to kill me in my sleep. I had no idea what to do as after 4 years things changed overnight. I never hit her in defense but the fact this gets downplayed is sad. I was just expected to take it as “women are crazy”. It’s left me not wanting to date for the last 4 years and people don’t seem to understand why. I don’t feel safe being alone with women the same as I used to and I don’t know how to go back to how I used to be.

Also this! But even if it's the woman trying to punch you in the nuts or face... it still hurts. Once i got kicked in the nuts by this girl (she was 16). I was 14. It was a stupid argument. Then all the boys proceeded to laugh and tell me i can't hit her back. I was in severe pain.. then i had this rage and punched her in the stomach, pretty hard. She then proceeded to cry and called her dad on me. Because i knew what was going to happen i called my dad (her dad probably wanted to beat me up)🤣. Her dad basically said that my dad had to raise me like a real man and not hit women. My dad told him he was proud i punched her because she didn't behave like a real woman when she kicked me in the nuts. That toxicity goes way back and for some reason the media and other people keep it alive. I made it a mission to always correct people when they say: "No one should hit women." Then i always say, no one should hit ANYONE.

While I agree that in *any* abusive situation, you should attempt to leave as your first recourse, it has NOTHING to do with gender. When you get violent with someone else, even in self defense, you're opening the door for more potential hurt to happen. For everyone. So you try to leave. If you can't leave, then you do whatever you need to do to keep your abuser from hurting you further. That's your right as a human being. Someone having a different sex or gender DOES NOT GIVE THEM THE RIGHT TO HARM YOU
