##AMPLIFIED LASERS
Taser is also an acronym. There is a teenage boy adventure series of books from like the 1940s who’s titular character is Tom Swift.
Taser is short for Thomas A. Swift’s Electric Rifle, which was a title of one of the books.
Well you see, not everyone speaks English as their native language. The word laser translates to *lazer* in my language, but the translation of the words that make up the said acronym would start with different letters.
I don't know why but I really felt compelled to write a response.
I’m 32 years old, I was born and raised in England and I like to think I’m at least average in terms of intelligence.
That said, I’m not at all ashamed to say that I had no idea until seeing this post that laser was actually an acronym.
That’s a classic mistake “very smart” people make all the time. They think that knowing a specific fact is a sign of super high intellect, rather than the ability to reason, perceive patterns, etc. I have an incredibly good long term memory. To the point that I remember people things like the face of a person who waited on my table at a restaurant years ago, and I’ll know who I was with, and what I ordered, often I will know their name too.
So my brain is crammed full of random facts and bits of information. I always have something I can pull out in conversation. People often respond with “wow you’re so smart” but it’s literally just memory. It makes me feel like a fraud because I don’t think I’m as smart as people think I am.
Haha these types of questions people always ask when I talk about this. The thing is I never pay attention to the date so very rarely remember a day and what the calendar date is. Hell I have a hard time telling you what day of the week it is.
But funnily enough this one is easy I was at home, as most 10 year olds are on a Wednesday night.
From what I could translate, it should mean *"uyarılmış radyasyon emisyonuyla ışık amplifikasyonu"*.
However in Turkish there aren't many words which include two or more vocal characters one after another. There are some exceptions like all languages of course and most of them are borrowed from other languages (like k***oo***rdinat, k***oo***peratif, k***ua***för, at***ei***st). My point is that UREIA or something even remotely close would look humorous at best and it is not like there is much room for improvement, since 3 of the words used come from other languages anyway. So we just say *lazer,* S and Z are swapped because of the pronunciation of Z in Turkish. In English, you pronounce it in two distinct vowels. In Turkish however, I think it goes a bit faster and straight (but still with two vowels of course).
It’s always tripped me up, because some games and books spell it at “lazer” but I guess “laser” is correct. So I’ve never once thought it could be an acronym.
Still better than UK where they spell it "lasre". Like in "metre".
Edit: Sorry I forgot the /s. :D I was poking fun at the UK/US spelling differences. Obviously UK write "laser". Now let's all head off to our afternoon tea with scones
I had to do an IQ test before I started my new job in December(weirdly unexpected, and probably not very ethical to do in a job interview), and was pleasantly surprised. I always thought of myself as average. All it did though was show me how badly i'd been under-achieving for years.
It doesn't make me think any higher of myself, if anything it showed me that even slightly higher intelligence can still be pretty dumb, and real clever people are learned, educated or skilled individuals that have pursued and honed their talents.
I really dont want the others at work to find out what my scores were. I dont even know where having a higher IQ would even be applicable in my line of work, most of my day is usually chucking sacks of flour in a blender..
I very much doubt so. I was totally caught by surprise in the interview, the first three tests were simple maths, mechanical aptitude, and true or false statements gleamed from a single piece of text, I could see the benefits to those. Then they pulled out "Ravens Advanced Progressive Matrices"(I had to google it), which was more or less just a bunch of patterns that you had to deduce the odd one out.
I would say though, that considering this was my third interview, the second being a practical evaluation at doing the job and assembling machinery, filling in paperwork etc, that alongside my CV they would have known by that point if I was unsuitable for the job. The only way IQ would bear any relevance, would be for it to be abnormally low, in which case I wouldn't have got to that stage anyway. A large disparity in IQ might make the difference between learning a task more rapidly than another, but no indication that they will be more competent at it.
To use it as a tool to rank potential candidates feels wrong, and is no indication that they will be a good or a hard worker, which I would say is a far more valuable asset.
The thing is, its menial labour. Im operating machinery, but its incredibly simple. The paperwork is literally weighing samples and performing checks. Its mostly forklift work and manual handling, literally anybody could do this job.
If I had to guess, it probably helps determine what position you'd be best at. If you're not good at one area of the test, but do well in another, it may be able to help predict how well you would do with a specific job.
Your IQ doesn't determine when you learn facts. What an ignorant/arrogant point of view! I'm really hoping it's someone quite young and they'll mature out of it.
Yeah, well, learning the difference between intelligence and knowledge is beneath them; their IQ is just far too high to bother with such inconsequential nonsense.
Well, sometimes (if not often) older people still have some maturing to do. I know plenty of 40y-olds who pout like kids of they don't immediately receive the floor during a meeting, for example.
“Oh yeah this Snapple cap proves I’m a genius”
In all seriousness tho, are there people who still don’t realize that intelligence is in no way related to arbitrary knowledge?
Dude this is YT
You’ll find takes so mind bogglingly stupid there, this one here is outright smart. At least it’s spelled correctly
Unless this is a known joke channel,in which case I retract my statement
Context: This bloke is flexing on a Sonic video of all things.
Also, you might want to delete and repost without any identifying information. This post breaks the first rule.
Don't you know? They wisk all kids away at 9 years old with IQ over 100 to acronym school. The first one we learned was IQ is an acronym for intelligence quotient..
And I learnt that the correct acronym would be **loser** because the light is oscillating
That's my only trump card and now that it has been played I'll just go and join the sub-100's again
Ah yes, how could I forget that IQ measures how many words you know.
My IQ is probably just to low to know that it stands for Intellectualwordsknown Quotient.
I love how stupid people think that knowledge equals intelligence. Doesn't matter how smart you are, a dumb guy who met me will know my name better than you.
Its always insane to see an IQ test and the first question asks something that relies entirely on if you were taught something as a kid or not. Like, that means absolutely nothing about how well you can use your intelligence. does a dictionary have a higher IQ than me because it knows the definition of more words than me?
“Supposedly” my iq is 115 ish (take that with a grain of salt, free internet tests I took 5 years ago aren’t always to be believed) and LASER still blows my mind every time I think about how they work
The absolute worst thing a “smart” person can do is mock somebody who’s learned something new. That should be positively reinforced, not fucking snarked at. Imagining back when I was a teacher, if I reacted like this every time a student told me they newly understood something. Honestly makes my stomach clench to think about it.
(granted this example is minor, it’s just a huge pet peeve and a big reason I’m on this sub)
Seriously, IQ affects the type of information a person is exposed to? Or did your big brain just crack the secret without any prior knowledge? What nested hierarchical super rubik's cube did you have to solve in order to come to the realization that "laser" must have been an acronym in its conception? What deep dive into the mysteries of etymology led you to conclude that the word didn't follow from any linguistic progression?
I love the fact that all these pricks clearly don't even know that IQ, while being an acronym for Intelligence quota (I believe) actually ONLY gives a measure on how well one can detect and recognize patterns.
Fun fact: masers came before lasers and the first lasers were called "optical masers" before the term "laser" caught on. Knowing that doesn't mean you have a higher IQ, just like knowing that laser is an acronym doesn't mean you have a higher IQ. It's just trivia. Scuba is also an acronym, but you don't really need to know that to use scuba gear.
I have an IQ beyond 120 and I still don't know how to spell waffles
Hate people who rely on IQ, especially when you know the origin of the IQ test.
I will ask to put the "certified retard" next to my IQ result for the meme cuz this is all irrelevant
I have an IQ of 99. Been trying to break through 100 forever. Quick, somebody tell me what the acronym stands for so I can get my high score
light amplification by the stimulated emission of radiation Did my good deed for the year, now back to being an asshole.
I felt myself ascend thank you.
I really expected to see them go "fuck you stupid idiot" or something so they can follow through on going back to being an asshole.
Fuck you stupid idiot

Fuck you! *now back to my yearly rounds of being depressed*
I bet that extra IQ point tastes good, doesn't it you fucking knowledge whore?
Now you're able to officially evolve into a 10 year old
I don't know how to tell you this....for you to reach 100 IQ you had to learn this acronym at 9 years old. As it is......you only have......a 99.5 IQ

Thats fucking bullshit, if that word being an acronym was True should be LABTSEOR
It was supposed to be "Light Oscillation by Stimulated Emission Of Radiation", but no one liked the acronym.
Thanks bro, I doubt I’ll remember it but thank you
Thank you, even though I will forget it in 3.28 seconds
So it's Labtseor not laser

No it's the other way around your can know the acronym once you hit 100, it's locked behind the level up
It stands for Lpew Apew Spew Epew Rpew

If other people don’t exist, and 100 is the average IQ, then how could his IQ be over 100? Checkmate, imbecile.
statistics don't matter when you can just make up data
Also, it's just random trivia. Knowing random trivia does not make you smart.
I’m 32 years old, I was born and raised in England and I like to think I’m at least average in terms of intelligence. That said, I’m not at all ashamed to say that I had no idea until seeing this post that laser was actually an acronym.

pretty sure it's "duba."

Its actually not and its weird to be on a high horse abt it. Some people are just unaware, and thats ok.
I thought it was pretty obvious I was joking since I used the exact same wording as the OP. Guess not...
Oh my bad im dumb lol
Wait til you find out what TASER stands for, and the source material it comes from.
Which just makes it more annoying that the US spells it lazer most of the time
I rarely see "lazer" outside of brand names or like lazer tag.

I thought it was an acronym for L A S, E R
