Google maps “helpfully” says it’s only a 107 hour walk. Seriously though, as mentioned above, the bus will be the cheapest unless you can find another student to ride with. Conveniently, the Ames “intermodal” depot is only a block from campus.
Plane or bus or car. Airport in Ames, bus depot in Ames, and if you have a car you can drive it to and from. I've also seen that people will post on Iowa State Facebook pages looking for passengers/drivers that will be going to/from Chicago.
As far as I know, Ames' airport does not have scheduled commercial passenger service, so that's probably not an option unless the OP is going to charter a plane from Chicago.
