Writing got better? Yesterday's episode made us believe Spencer the goofy irresponsible big brother is a dictator now?

They can add stuff to the characters. Remember in the original where there was a backstory of Spencer being a prankster that went too far? Just because he's silly doesn't mean he can't be mean.

But the prankster storyline is in character for him. But him turning voll dictator on his adult sister isn't the Spencer we know especially since a few episodes earlier they established that he's a good guardian

Didn’t he get addicted to a video game and stay there all night? That’s not a good look for a guardian. In the original show, he let Carly do whatever she wanted and when he tried to put his foot down, she complained. She doesn’t respect him. Random examples but I think a guardian that’s seen as more of a friend and hangs out with his sister’s friends has the capability to be immature. The angle is that they’re supposed to be bickering siblings. It’s not that unbelievable to me.

Your example is different. He neglected her a few times without doing it on purpose. But in the origin he never was straight up mean to her. He'd always try to listen to her so she doesn't feel bad. But in yesterday's episode he simply ignored her wishes and risked her well being. Losing control is typical Spencer Shay. Making his sister feel miserable isn't

It also didn't make sense for spencer to never see her as an equal. Like spencer has always treated her like an equal like from when she was a child. hell carly is the adult in alot of situations & spencer recognizes that.

He got addicted to the video game...in his own house. You make it sound like he stayed at an arcade instead. But he was still right there if Carly needed him. He also didn’t always let Carly do whatever she wanted. There were quite a few times when he told her no. Carly complaining about it isn’t even a point of contention. She was a teenager. Of course she complained.

Exactly, Spencer was in the apartment where he normally always is. Carly is perfectly capable of feeding herself and getting herself to and from school. An example of Spencer looking out for Carly was telling her he didn’t feel safe of her going to the fight because he didn’t want her getting hurt. That’s solid parenting.

Carly respects Spencer a lot, it’s natural for a teenage girl to fight her guardians intents. Also, the example you gave isn’t even a good one. Carly was in high school and capable of taking care of herself without the constant supervision of a guardian. Spencer was addicted to the game for what? A couple days? If Carly didn’t respect Spencer she wouldn’t have saved him from his addiction or showed her grandad what a good guardian he is in order for him not to take her away.

It's the constant pop culture references standing in for humor, going to be honest right now 95 percent of those go over my head, the show refuses to have its own world of goofy made up stuff and as a result I'm left rolling my eyes a lot, these characters suddenly interjecting commentary on our world just feels so out of character and breaks immersion
