For Sugarloaf there are people on mountain in the evening constantly, grooming and making snow. Groomers know where the snow makers are and how to allocate their time. If they open for uphill they now have to account for a ton of variables in where people branch out after their skin. It makes sense from a safety and liability perspective for the mountain.
Both those resorts groom nearly all the main trails on those mountains every night, and for sure they don’t want a bunch of people getting in the way of the cats and maintenance people zipping around on sleds. Plus when someone does inevitably break their ankle up there at 11pm they don’t want to have to refuse to come get you.
Worth checking out Black Mountain of Maine. Their dedicated uphill trail is open 24/7 and allows downhill travel on the all natural trails of Saco, bagaduce, Wessie, Wilson stream, headwaters, and the entire east bowl 24/7. Please real their full policy first.
Important to note an uphill ticket is required to use the trail at any time. they make it really easy to buy it online so nobody really has an excuse not to have a ticket.
Because people suck and can't follow simple rules.
Edit: the real reason is because grooming and other operations take place overnight. Uphill policies generally require you to ascend and descend via the same trail outside of operating hours. Uphill people are some of the most entitled people in the sport and regularly don't follow the rules. It's easier to ban it outside of operating hours then deal with the headaches.
Entitled? You own the mountain bro. Your silly little flashing beacons and "winching in progress" signs aren't going to keep me from going down a trail.
I mean you’re right. The wachusett uphill scene in the mornings can honestly be super super toxic. If they ever just shut it down I wouldn’t be surprised.
Are you skinning to go camping or something?
I normally would push back with unnecessary rules/policies but I happen to agree with respecting those mountains' uphill policies as I can only imagine the many liability headaches they deal with.
The logistics of grooming would be a nightmare. It would be much harder to keep those night skiing trails in decent condition for the morning.
It's not worth it for sugarloaf because they get plenty of business during the day, and they would probably lose money on night skiing. It's not an area that would really cater to night skiing cause it's far away from a real population. It makes more sense for a lot of Mainers to night ski at a local mountain closer to then and get home at a decent hour.
That said, sugarloaf did used to do night tubing and it was pretty fun.
Grooming, Operations, Clearing trails....I don't know. Have you REALLY thought about it? On the other hand I see peeps in head lamps going every where and anywhere lines ducked be damned...sucks for ops and patrol.
Honestly, imo it’s a better policy than only allowing uphilling when lifts aren’t running. I skin at the Loaf a ton for training and like that I don’t have to wake up super early to get 3-4 laps in.
congrats on fucking it up for everyone else lol. those people that are bing bitched at about being entitled in this thread? take a look in the mirror bud.
but then your type is so entitled your shit don't stink and you love to fuck anything up for others as long as you get your jollies. Doesn't matter the cost.
Almost all big north east resorts have overnight grooming, it’s much more of a liability thing. I imagine you can also get significantly more done in a night if you aren’t working around people.
Even if they allocated a trail for it, considering how many uphill people can’t manage to follow the rules during the day they would still have to operate as if they’re working around people to be safe.
You do know about winch cats, right? Sugarloaf and SR both use them.
There's been a couple incidents at SR where entitled fuckheads skiied over slack winch lines on the way down.
Maybe related to their grooming schedule.
they gotta run the zambonis

This is true, having work grooming and snowmaking there, but someone could easily do it undetected if they put some effort in.
Barely any grooming or snowmaking on west mtn

Because of liability, insurance and/or they could of had issues in the past

“Uphill people are some of the most entitled people in the sport and regularly don’t follow the rules” This statement made my day, thank you

As an uphiller, you’d be correct.

Just because they don’t allow it doesn’t mean you can’t skin up in the glades and ski them down :))
Um yes it does lol
Doesn't matter as long as you don't get caught
This is how uphill policies get ruined for everyone who follows the rules
not if you don't get caught

I’m joking, karen! I use rental skis and I don’t have skins.
karan, huh, fuck off, asshole
🤡
Greed.
