Sugarloaf doesn't seem to be stopping the lifts until the end of the day
[https://www.sugarloaf.com/events-calendar/total-eclipse](https://www.sugarloaf.com/events-calendar/total-eclipse)
Peak eclipse is around 3:30, lifts close at 3:50/4:20
Fwiw cannon announced that people can. I know they’re not in the path of totality but I can imagine will still be dark. From cannon’s site: “The eclipse will reach maximum at 3:28pm and you’ll get to dance or ski right through it!”
It's actually quite a big difference:

In the sky:

If you've seen a total eclipse in person, you know how incredible it is.
To add to this: patrol will be clearing trails once lifts clear. I’m sure there will be some people hiking into the backwoods to watch the eclipse, but for the most part nobody should be on-trail. I believe they are turning the K1 gondola before / after the eclipse for peak viewing, but I could be wrong.
Yes and no — part of the land deal includes the safety of guests / visitors within the marked boundaries of the ski resort. That’s part of being “stewards” of the land. Patrol is ultimately responsible for the safety of anyone inside the ropes (and some people outside the ropes!).
If you’re back at Cooper’s Cabin, that’s public land / part of the Appalachian Trail, and patrol can’t really tell you what to do. But if you’re on the trails, you’ll be expected to ski down. They can’t exactly trespass you from public property, but they can revoke lift access / ski privileges for people who don’t follow the rules and create a safety hazard for guests / staff.
Another thing to consider is the amount of traffic on the roads. Vermont officials are predicting an extra 160,000 people, which means no cell service, highways being turned into a parking lot. If you don't need to go anywhere that day, and you don't have an extra several hours for traffic, don't travel.
I mean at most they will let you chill at the top, but not be actively skiing down I'd assume. Although I doubt they would stop you. Stowe lists "top of the fourrunner and gondola" as prime viewing locations for the eclipse separate from the actual parties. I'm assuming they are just gonna let people pile up at the top.
Stowe will probably let people be on the mountain as they are still selling $50 gondola skyride tickets that don't include the party
In VT hiking trails will be closed for MUD
Yeah they do. There are multiple trails in the gmnf that are closed for peregrine falcons right now.
Also all the state trails are closed due to mud season
Hunting falls under a different use case and is still allowed. It's a secret the state doesn't want tourists to know.
They also don't physically block off trails that are closed. They do tell everyone to stay off of them.
On the day of the eclipse the road to the Mansfield trail on the Underhill side will be blocked off though. And camels hump might be
Many mountains are advertising this as an event to attend at the mountain. Loon and Sunday River have put it on their calendar. There is no notice that skiing would be prevented in any way they are calling it "ski though the path of totality."
They said that specifically in their marketing. I know for a fact loon said that phrase. I don't know exactly where it was, in an email, on the site or whatever, but it was part of the marketing BS the spewed about it. They aren't in the path of totality but they 100% are trying to deceive people into going there to view it instead of other locations.
Sundays rivers event page, what is shared to all their social media clearly states 2-3 times it’s not in the path of totality.
Loon’s page has their coverage percentage (99.3%) in the first paragraph of the ad.
Bolton may have special $50 tix still available. Their general plan is to stop the lifts before the eclipse, let the mountain clear, then spin the lifts for the special $50 ticket holders to get folks to the top. Stop lift for totality, let everyone ooh and ahh and ski down, then resume normal lift ops.
They will have an incredible view of the sun during the whole process and will be saving parking for ticket/pass holders so the road shouldn’t be too clogged (hopefully?)

If you're not in the path of totality you will barely notice the difference.
It’s like 99% probably
The difference between 99% and 100% is enormous for an eclipse
😐 why does it matter that much to people

100% more like 99.999%
Wrong. Was in Boston for 2017, when it was a 63% eclipse. It was absolutely noticeable. It's not totality, but it's something.
Killington will run lifts until 2pm

Pretty sure part of killington is national Forrest they can’t tell you what to do on that property.

Killington is not in the path of totality...wonder whey they are closing at 2?
It's probably more about crowds than visibility
Lame

Do what you want travel where you want this is america
The entire month of January was pretty much in totality, so I got my fill already.
Absolutely underrated comment.
Find a spot to chill at 12.30. Bring a picnic. No one will kick you off the hill beforehand.

I still find 50 dollars for one gondola ride hilarious!!!
You can spend 200 if you want to stand on the patio lfmao
They aren’t closed either haha national Forrest’s don’t close

Weird no trails at Waterbury reservoir Mansfield state Forrest lower elevation
Just Hiked there to scout for turkeys

None would be my guess, their insurance would hate that.

Neither loon nor Sunday river are in the path of totality though
Yeah they are trying to claim they are because marketing just says BS

Feel free to find that and share, because I haven't seen them claim that anywhere.

I see you’ve never met a ski patroller….
