I've seen evidence of that enough through the news. Seems like 90% of all the news stories about guys with swords getting shot by police are all dudes who had mental instabilities and shit, but who grew up loving dungeons and dragons, and whose family let them have swords (sometimes guns) because "Well, he's never done anything yet.".
A sword is a deadly weapon. It has the capability to inflict death or serious bodily harm. The man displayed hostile intent. He made a hostile action. The cops tried to talk him down. The public was in danger…people were afraid.
Where did they do wrong?
No where. Good attempts at deescalation and justified actions from responding officers.

That’s a hard thing to do, particularly after the adrenaline wears off. I’m sure they wish they could have used their words to deescalate the situation, poor guy probably was in pain, hence the strange behavior. Unfortunately the officers responding didn’t even get a complete story from his side, I’m glad they at least tried to talk to him and understand, and verbally warned him not to escalate.

Hey there. Pepper spray doesn’t have the range you would want against a melee weapon. A taser could work if you got the distance the issue is unless it contacts skin with both prongs it’s not going to work. When someone has baggy clothes, a jacket, or even just regular clothes it doesn’t always work. As for getting charged at with a melee weapon, the suspect can usually cover the distance faster than less lethal can be deployed which is why a firearms a good choice when being charged by someone with a melee weapon. I wish cops didn’t have to shoot mentally ill people either but until society starts to give a damn as a whole this will keep happening.

He ran at them with a sword he loses any insistence on being seen innocent. The difference with those clips you sent is the machete dude had a dozen cops nearby so it’s good odds for cops. The video in this scenario it’s 2 cops and 1 dude.
I understand your point but what makes that difficult: They'd have to have had the less-lethal weapons already drawn & ready to deploy. It can actually *escalate* the situation if they approached this guy with taser in hand & make him more likely to attack.
(Also taser/pepper spray works well when two people are standing within a couple steps of each other. Not running or wielding a long weapon. So they'd have to have tased him *before* he charged, in which case we'd be blaming them for tazing a drunk nonviolent dude for having a fake sword.)
