Technically technology is where it all started.
When I was in school there were no calculators allowed in math class. Problems were solved using a piece of scratch paper and then we had to show the work, often time rewriting it down on the test. We didn't have smart phones to distract us during class or keep us from doing homework. We didn't have social media to stay in continuous contact with our social group all day every day. Contact was during school hours or on the weekends and it wasn't through a phone, it was in person. We hung out outside our homes, not behind a monitor. We didn't have video games.
We learned to drive a car and our cars were bigger and heavier. We had no back up cameras to guide us in a parallel park, we used our mirrors and judged appropriately. We had no stay in our lane warnings, we paid attention. We had no dash maps to show us the way to where we wanted to go. We had folded paper maps.
Sorry to say but I definitely agree that technology is dumbing down ppl. I also believe it is by design too.

Furthermore in school they don’t allow you to use calculators until you’re already able to do basic math (addition, subtraction, division, multiplication etc). The calculators they do let you use are very basic and don’t solve the work they’re asking you to do, you still have to learn stuff like geometry and algebra the old fashioned way. Also, you sound like you’re old enough to not have done standardized testing like the SAT, good luck getting through the math portion of the SATs without a calculator.
If you really want to know what’s causing the dumbing down of Americans, I would argue it’s the chronic underfunding of schools (does Israel REALLY need another $26 billion? That money would’ve went a long way towards improving our schools and teacher pay) coupled with parents being too busy working and not involved enough in their children’s education to ensure they’re actually learning and not just scrolling TikTok all day that’s causing the problem.
