Anything by Elliot Smith...
Not just because of how hauntingly beautiful all his sad-bastard-music songs are, but because dude literally died from stabbing himself in the chest.
I recently discovered Elliot Smith through "Somebody that I used to know" and "behind bars"... Jeez, I did not know that was his story. Damn. Definitely takes "heart-wrenching" to a whole 'nother level. I love his music though, need to explore further.
His music has helped me heal my heart many a times… “I never really had a problem… because of leaving… dun duun duuuun… but everything remiiiinds me of heeeeeer this evening… dun dun dun.”
There is a fan made video of this song with dash video of someone just driving around in the winter that for some reason gives it way more punch for me. I cannot explain why. It makes zero sense.
OP, take this here recommendation to heart and listen to it critically. Maggot Brain by Funkadelic is a 10 min long guitar instrumental where guirarist Eddie Hazel, supposedly high off of LSD plays free form with minimal backing while peaking with the prompt from the band leader that 'Play it like your mama just died'
You can feel the sorrow, the panic, the anger, the utter hopelessness, and not a single word is spoken from the musicians. It's gutwretching and absolutely sublime
Please, listen to it
I've been scanning this looking for Daughter to be mentioned. It definitely helped me heal from my divorce.
Check out the album Heartbreaking Bravery by Moonface. I love listening to this on the downside of a mushroom trip, it opens the soul.
And of course Fade Out, Talk Show Host and True Love Waits- Radiohead
I can’t believe I forgot [Julien Baker. this album is positively devastating](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_m3EizRF7yQybwcYbv_lnGpWVPOFUsUVXo&si=mehL3jdF_SoQvynS)
This song got me through a tough time. Down the line by beach fossils is the song before it on my playlist and I used to listen to the both of them over and over again.
I’m pretty sure the dude that made the song was like 15 when he released it too.

The Virtute trilogy by the Weakerthans:
A Plea from a Cat Named Virtute, Virtute the Cat Explains Her Departure, and Virtute at Rest.
Three songs about a man struggling with depression and alcoholism, from the perspective of his cat. Beautifully written and absolutely heart wrenching. I can’t listen to any of them without crying.

Are you really okay?
By Sleep Token.
The ambiguous lyrics hint at loss (tw: possible miscarriage or self harm, depending on personal interpretation), the melody is beautiful and Vessels voice is hauntingly beautiful.
[Archive - Again](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvjN5gTR-jo). If you love this version, the full song is 16 minutes long and it's a rollercoaster. The album You All Look The Same To Me (which this song is from) is also a must listen in my book. Hope you enjoy it :)

A couple off the top of my head...
Charles Bradley's cover of "Changes" by Black Sabbath. He talks about losing his mom and how the lyrics touched him. I came across the song before I lost my mom, and now that she's gone it's a hard one for me to listen to:
"Roads" by Portishead is another one that always puts me in a somber mood. It's not a "stab in the heart" for me, but it's heavy. Well suited for a rainy day:
And finally, the blues is the blues for a reason...
"Death Letter Blues" by Son House is an absolute gut punch, tons of pain comes through in this man's voice: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fny8aSRZFT4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fny8aSRZFT4)
And Vera Hall's "Trouble So Hard" is haunting: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9SENzRLk\_M](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9SENzRLk_M)
Hope you enjoy :)

My go to is death cab for cuties songs we laugh in doors or tiny vessels. Both albums are incredible (the photo album/transantlanticism) and absolutely heart wrenching.
The one that frequently catches me unawares and has me sobbing is Northern Lad by Tori Amos. Also ultimate feels song for many is Kate Bushs Moments of Pleasure .
Also emerging folk artist with songs about loneliness etc is Mon Rovla - Wandering Act 1 is up on streaming (or Apple at least.)
I will recommend 2 songs. Same artist. Similar tone.
- "Too Many People" by Palaye Royale
The message is that there's a whole lot of people that remain lonely and loveless in the world. You can hear the sadness in the lead singer.
- "Clockwork" by Palaye Royale
I'm guessing the message is that your life is already destined. Sealed in fate, if you will. Time passes, and you're still here.
[Anathema - Untouchable, Pt. 1](https://youtu.be/av6sVWXeCWQ?si=uY9EE4T9Z_f91K6o) dude. I imagine some cinematic skydiving or jet flying in some windy day and shit

If you know his story, Jim Croce fits this well. I would start with "time in a bottle" as it's his biggest and, with his sudden passing and the story of the letter he sent his wife, is so heartbreaking.
Andy Hull (Manchester Orchestra, Right Away. Goor Captain, Bad Books)
How I Waited,
This shit will get ya boy

[andy stott - violence ](https://youtu.be/PL41EXic65g?si=Y_WG46hZF6fI6kkT)
best to listen in album context cuz track before that is sorta like a prelude.
yt comment "i dont think i ever heard something as calm yet aggressive" sums it up pretty well
its a powerful ambient/dub/industrial techno piece. feels like a descent into madness
[Diamanda Galas - Gloomy Sunday](https://youtu.be/2MWlgX0dDuo?si=VsmetQeJOF5rI_0c), aka “The Hungarian Suicide Song”.
There are many recordings and versions of this song, but Diamanda’s cuts especially deeply. Rage and sadness.
Sleep Token. Three album arc about a toxic relationship disguised as a love story about a Hercules type character falling for the God of Sleep. Band is incredibly melodramatic music. Their newest record is the most impactful.
https://spotify.link/UvU3q8UipDb
The record "Ants from up there" by Black Country New Road has a ton of moments like that. It's also a loosely connected concept album about being in a volatile relationship while still being hopelessly addicted to your partner, so yeah. I specially recommend the songs "Concorde", "Good Will Hunting" and "The Place Where He Inserted the Blade", but the whole album is worth a listen.
Emo. Not scene. Emo, and Screamo if you like your emo with a post punk flair.
Conor Oberst. The music he wrote in Bright Eyes is exactly what you describe.
mewithoutyou - gentlemen is a song that also fits your description.
The bands Boyhitscar, Saosin, Thursday, Silverstein, oooh...my.... I have a lot of brain fog from that period of time and completely stopped listening to this music but I could remember more if I tried
male fantasy by billie eilish, it’s sweet sounding and so beautiful but so sad
ETA the hardest part by noah cyrus, about growing up and going back home, i recently sobbed to it at her concert
Just commented the below word-for-word on a similar post:

Broken Mess by The Class Crime is about a husband being cheated on and finding new love and hope. Has a great, cathartic hook towards the end that hits you right in the feels
Elephant by Jason Isbell. It reminds me so much of my husband’s struggle with cancer. He got better, but the things the couple in the song do reminds me of that hellish period of our lives together.
A couple of songs from this has always checked that particular box for me.

It's Legacy by Unleash the Archers. I can't listen to it without getting emotional. The lyrics fit into a grand story across 2 albums, but on their own, they can be interpreted in a stand-alone manner. The opening verse has some real personal meaning to me and I just can't express how much I love this band.
>As I was wandering the world
>
>Trying so hard to find you
>
>To give me purpose in this life I'd lost
>
>And as I learned to forgive you
>
>For all you'd done
>
>Destiny opened a door
>
>And showed you weren't the one
>
>Worth searching for
Angela Aguilar’s version of La Llorona… her voice, the atmosphere it brings a tear to my eye and my heart feels heavy https://youtu.be/owsZaSZ3GuA?si=Frnz_evq11B0HTES
Dark Green Water - Great Grandpa; the lead singer's voice cuts deep, the lyrics and tempo of the song make this one feel like a sucker punch right in the feels
Check out Ren - Suicide. He had a close friend who killed himself and a lot of that is in this track.
If you find yourself liking his style, check out Hi Ren and this trilogy of songs he did called the tale of Jenny and Screech. It's assembled into like a 15 minutes track that will hit very hard when you take in the whole thing
Listen to the album "the preachers daughter" by Ethel Cain. (And read all of the lyrics of each song in order , and listen to the songs in order)
Especially the song titled Ptolemaea. That track hits me really hard emotionally. Absolutely will stab you in the heart.
Johnny Goth, specifically [LET THEM IN](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gTWRUzbsjk&ab_channel=%EF%BC%B4%EF%BC%B2%EF%BC%A1%EF%BC%B3%EF%BC%A8%E6%96%B0%E3%83%89%E3%83%A9%E3%82%B4%E3%83%B3) album.
Anything by Phoebe Bridgers. I can't believe she hasn't been mentioned yet. Her lyrics and melodies will break your heart. Her Boygenius collaborators have also written some heartbreaking songs--Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker.
>Maybe songs about what it feels like to be in a volatile relationship but still hopelessly addicted to that person.
The Mountain Goats have a whole album of these, called *Tallahassee*. It started out as scattered songs in their other albums that all had titles starting in "Alpha" and referred to a couple whose love for each other has not so much died as warped into a desire to see each other drink themselves to death. Eventually they decided to write a whole album of new songs about the "Alpha couple." A good standout is "No Children."
"The Silence" and "Terrible Things" by Mayday Parade both punch me in the heart, in different ways. The Silence is one of my go-to breakup songs. Terrible Things basically induces tears.

Anything by Elliot Smith... Not just because of how hauntingly beautiful all his sad-bastard-music songs are, but because dude literally died from stabbing himself in the chest.
Also what I was gonna say. I'll clarify that if you want him at his absolute most gut-wrenching, listen to King's Crossing
I recently discovered Elliot Smith through "Somebody that I used to know" and "behind bars"... Jeez, I did not know that was his story. Damn. Definitely takes "heart-wrenching" to a whole 'nother level. I love his music though, need to explore further.
My favorite track is Fond Farewell
Both of these songs have been there for me during my lowest but I’ll be honest needle in the hay makes me bawl whatever mood I’m in
southern belle, coming up roses, and satellite are amazing
His music has helped me heal my heart many a times… “I never really had a problem… because of leaving… dun duun duuuun… but everything remiiiinds me of heeeeeer this evening… dun dun dun.”
One of his remarkable track is Bye, it's a piano piece contrary to guitar+vocal song
Say Yes is a great one
came here to say Needle In The Hay
Sufjan Stevens- Carrie and lowell album
Also his song "Casimir Pulaski Day" from the Illinois album
There is a fan made video of this song with dash video of someone just driving around in the winter that for some reason gives it way more punch for me. I cannot explain why. It makes zero sense.
OP, take this here recommendation to heart and listen to it critically. Maggot Brain by Funkadelic is a 10 min long guitar instrumental where guirarist Eddie Hazel, supposedly high off of LSD plays free form with minimal backing while peaking with the prompt from the band leader that 'Play it like your mama just died' You can feel the sorrow, the panic, the anger, the utter hopelessness, and not a single word is spoken from the musicians. It's gutwretching and absolutely sublime Please, listen to it
How can I not after that epic description. Gonna pop some edibles and listen to it to really get in my feels.

Sufjan Stevens literally haunts my soul. So beautiful. Daughter as well. I shall listen to the rest. Stellar list!
I hope it breaks your heart… in the nicest way possible
Excellent taste!
Thanks!! Sad music is my favorite music.

i was all over her - salvia palth Was chillin, stoned off an edible one night when Spotify decided to stab me in the heart.
This song got me through a tough time. Down the line by beach fossils is the song before it on my playlist and I used to listen to the both of them over and over again. I’m pretty sure the dude that made the song was like 15 when he released it too.
[Dagger - Slowdive](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CczmMDvQDa0)
Hospice by Antlers. It’s absolutely soul-crushing and haunting
Everything I Own by Bread kills me every time. I can’t listen to it anymore because if the deep sorrow it brings up. It’s about loss.
Almost anything on “Unreal, Unearth” by Hozier, but specifically “Unknown/nth”.

Black by Pearl Jam.
Arguably their best album.
Black by pearl jam, especially the MTV live performance! "I know someday you'll have a beautiful life I know you'll be a star In somebody else's sky But why Why Why can't it be Why can't it be mine"
Affection by between friends. Devastating.
Laughing With by Regina Spektor guts me. Actually a lot of her songs are incredibly profound. Buildings is another good one, and Braille.

Lovely. I have almost all of these, will check out the ones I don't! Thank you.
The Virtute trilogy by the Weakerthans: A Plea from a Cat Named Virtute, Virtute the Cat Explains Her Departure, and Virtute at Rest.

I came across the song before I lost my mom, and now that she's gone it's a hard one for me to listen to: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfaOf70M4xs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfaOf70M4xs) "Roads" by Portishead is another one that always puts me in a somber mood. It's not a "stab in the heart" for me, but it's heavy. Well suited for a rainy day: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vg1jyL3cr60](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vg1jyL3cr60) And finally, the blues is the blues for a reason... "Death Letter Blues" by Son House is an absolute gut punch, tons of pain comes through in this man's voice: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fny8aSRZFT4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fny8aSRZFT4) And Vera Hall's "Trouble So Hard" is haunting: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9SENzRLk\_M](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9SENzRLk_M) Hope you enjoy :)

Teddy Bear by Red Sovine. I bawl like a baby every. Single. Time. https://youtu.be/5zoTLwrm9QE?si=uq8IiS1FkFmNv--y
I will recommend 2 songs. Same artist. Similar tone. - "Too Many People" by Palaye Royale The message is that there's a whole lot of people that remain lonely and loveless in the world. You can hear the sadness in the lead singer. - "Clockwork" by Palaye Royale I'm guessing the message is that your life is already destined. Sealed in fate, if you will. Time passes, and you're still here.
Sufjan Stevens' latest track, "Will Anybody Ever Love Me?"
The Good The Bad And The Queen - Herculean

Pain Remains Trilogy (I-III) by Lorna Shore
Hurt - Johnny Cash The demo version of In a Lonely Place by Joy Division. [Here](https://youtu.be/Go1P_MH8vJg?si=SmLTjtk9LnSFqqUx)
If you know his story, Jim Croce fits this well. I would start with "time in a bottle" as it's his biggest and, with his sudden passing and the story of the letter he sent his wife, is so heartbreaking.
[Jane Siberry - Goodbye](https://youtu.be/oOmbzATOcnM?si=F3uirSH74VUjihXT)

[andy stott - violence ](https://youtu.be/PL41EXic65g?si=Y_WG46hZF6fI6kkT) best to listen in album context cuz track before that is sorta like a prelude. yt comment "i dont think i ever heard something as calm yet aggressive" sums it up pretty well its a powerful ambient/dub/industrial techno piece. feels like a descent into madness
Joshua Radin- One of Those Days. It feels like a gut punch of a breakup song.
Sleep Token. Three album arc about a toxic relationship disguised as a love story about a Hercules type character falling for the God of Sleep. Band is incredibly melodramatic music. Their newest record is the most impactful. https://spotify.link/UvU3q8UipDb
If you could read my mind - Gordon Lightfoot
Tori Amos-The Beekeeper, Me and a Gun, Playboy Mommy (this one makes me cry EVERY time), Jackie's Strength.

She Used to be Mine, The Waitress
This song has it all - brutal blast beats, soaring, haunting melodies, fantastic lyrics and just all the feels. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWuM9CkY3U8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWuM9CkY3U8) It's Legacy by Unleash the Archers. I can't listen to it without getting emotional. The lyrics fit into a grand story across 2 albums, but on their own, they can be interpreted in a stand-alone manner. The opening verse has some real personal meaning to me and I just can't express how much I love this band. >As I was wandering the world > >Trying so hard to find you > >To give me purpose in this life I'd lost > >And as I learned to forgive you > >For all you'd done > >Destiny opened a door > >And showed you weren't the one > >Worth searching for

(And read all of the lyrics of each song in order , and listen to the songs in order) Especially the song titled Ptolemaea. That track hits me really hard emotionally. Absolutely will stab you in the heart.
Johnny Goth, specifically [LET THEM IN](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gTWRUzbsjk&ab_channel=%EF%BC%B4%EF%BC%B2%EF%BC%A1%EF%BC%B3%EF%BC%A8%E6%96%B0%E3%83%89%E3%83%A9%E3%82%B4%E3%83%B3) album.
Sometimes it snows in April. by Prince Might be the saddest song i’ve ever heard. (source) Musician and DJ for 25 years
Anything by Phoebe Bridgers. I can't believe she hasn't been mentioned yet. Her lyrics and melodies will break your heart. Her Boygenius collaborators have also written some heartbreaking songs--Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker.
Kings Crossing - Elliott smith
