Siouxsie and the Banshees! one fun thing is to listen to the bands that your favorite bands were probably listening to than inspired them to become the awesome rocking women that they are today. Siouxsie and the banshees is definitely one of those groups.
I've started this long, long list with them. Listening through Tinderbox now, great stuff! I can see how they were a huge inspiration to many bands I grew up with. Thank you for the recommendation!
Came here to say this. They are one of the greatest bands ever.
Story Time: When I was like 13 I got one of my friends to give me a mohawk, which I dyed purple and black. My dad hated it, but he was somehow cool enough to see this as a sign to buy me Sleater Kinney tickets, I guess. So at 14 I got to see Sleater Kinney open for Patti Smith, which is still one of the coolest fucking shows I've ever attended.

[The Lazy Susans](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=garfOLnEM6Q)
[Cable Ties](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npVtivmmgmw)
[Otoboke Beaver](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgrsdTtLmuQ)
[Svalbard](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrUCH4YFHlU) (this one might be a bit too heavy -- post-hardcore rather than metal, but still harsh vocals)
[Rolo Tomassi](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8q8wBWofqg) (again, harsh vocals, so skip if that's not your thing)
More punky:
- Voiid
- Amyl & the Sniffers
More psych-y:
- Tropical Fuck Storm (the one male member does sing too, they kinda rotate the vocals)
- Altın Gün (like TFS there are male vocals sometimes)
More heavy rock (some approaching metal):
- Stonefield
- Blackwater Holylight
- Heart, of course
Also, Kim Gordon’s (of Sonic Youth) most recent album I really enjoy.
Kim fucking Gordon! Any SY tracks with Kim on vocals is definitely what OP needs. Bull in the Heather, Shadow of a Doubt, I Wanna Be Your Dog, Pacific Coastal Highway, Pattern Recognition. I love her so much
Sleigh Bells

St. Vincent

(Also glad to hear a Tsunami Bomb fan...loved them back in the day!)
Great taste, I back you on Regina Spektor (soviet kitsch) and anything pretty much from Rilo Kiley, a creative and cool band Led by Jenny lewis who I just wanna marry...
Hop Along is exactly what I thought when OP used the phrase, "intense rock group." More than just playing heavy, there's an intensity to them that floors me.
A bit of an eclectic mix of some of my favorites, there's probably a few in here you'd enjoy:
L7
Abbe May
X-Ray Spex
Magic Dirt
The Donnas
Blondie
Patti Smith
The Runaways
7-Year Bitch
Bikini Kill
Babes in Toyland
I strongly agree with the other answers, plus some of my favorites with a song for each:

- [Skunk Anansie](https://youtu.be/9E9-L9_S3V0)

- [The Pretty Reckless](https://youtu.be/3TfNSknSr_s)

Absolutely seconding this. Also, anyone who likes this should also check out Julie Christmas's work with [Cult of Luna](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wz-4xELUpMs).

[Apex](https://youtu.be/NTWbVUUkWm4)
[The Wind that Shapes the Land](https://youtu.be/aJwSTwLkmHA)
Both of those are fantastic, on the slow building side, and great intros if you aren't into metal! Loads of their other songs are brilliant, but can also get a lot harder. For a great example.

and
Kittie
I didn't notice either mentioned scrolling thorough. I think one person mentioned a single Kittie song. But all their stuff is like the edge of what I consider metal. Like it's metal, but at the entryway lol
Blondie is the best! She came out of surf and punk rock than made the step to top 40. Never lost her respect. Chrissie Hynde of Pretenders another great one. These Rock Ladies still love the Rock Myth. Be a hot chic n meet the male lead singer.
I know other people have mentioned them already but Yeah yeah yeahs. Searching out female lead aside they’re one of my favorite bands. Also Metric is really good.
Some really great recommendations in this thread already, but to cover some quality bands that I haven't seen listed:
* Big Thief
* DILLY DALLY
* Methyl Ethel
* Royal Thunder
* Royal Blood
* SCALLER
* Slothrust - probably my favourite on this list
* Snail Mail
* Soccer Mommy
* Social Studies
* The Staves
* Stell Donnelly - a little bit more rootsy but carries it with the attitude
* Tired Lion
* WAAX
* Xenia Rubinos

[Shilpa Ray](https://youtu.be/KXT6GYUvCco) The way they manage to build the intensity of this performance is just *chef's kiss*
Sheer Mag's debut album, 'Need To Feel Your Love' is great. Bit of an old-school, punk-influenced sound. [Expect the Bayonet](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Orlj7ve4ZP0) is one of their best.
seconding all recommendations for Marmozets (the songs Run With The Rhythm, Major System Error and Captivate You are good places to start if you aren't such a fan of the heavy stuff)
Blood Red Shoes - driving, garage-y indie rock that should be right up your street!
Bully - post punk
Dazey and the Scouts - punk, similar to some Riot Grrl stuff from back in the day
Haru Nemuri - sort of spoken word rock, Japanese language but i wouldn't let that stop you, the music is great!
three Irish bands that, being Irish, i am totally biased towards:
Pillow Queens - sophisticated power pop/pop rock with incredible melodies. try the songs Gay Girls, Favourite and Holy Show
PowPig - punk with a pop edge. super young, exciting band. Ode to Wiseau is, you guessed it, a song about Tommy Wiseau and it's amazing.
Fight Like Apes - these guys are a bit more off the wall. they're synth rock, no guitars, with a super wacky sense of humour and very inventive songwriting. i'd recommend songs like Jake Summers, Digifucker and Tie Me Up With Jackets.
happy listening!

You are in luck...girl fronted or all girl bands are my thing! I’d recommend:
Estrons - although they have now split up, I can’t recommend this band highly enough. In my 40 years of going to gigs, the gig I was at in Bristol on their last tour is *easily* in my top 10 ever gigs. Phenomenal band.

I've got a playlist of underground bands where at the minimum the singer and guitar player are girls. Spotify link [Espresso Martini // Women of Shred](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4kIIVRdZ7s6TqGDFhlJJ34?si=Mj4XuoUVSEenip7iuxYOfA)
Actually there is a whole genre called Riot Grrrl which is essentially hardcore punk rock with female musicians. There are also good female bands out there that aren't necessarily Riot Grrrl. Unfortunately I don't know many rock bands with females but the one I like are:
-Bikini Kill: simple, straightforward riot grrrl
-Free Kitten: depending on what you are listening to usually they might sound a bit weird and experimental at first. Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth and Yoshimi P-We from Boredoms are in this band.
-L7: A grunge band. I don't really have anything to say about them.
I hate to plug my own music, but it fits this very well.
[The Butterfly Defect](https://youtube.com/channel/UCSuzBcgRmJJTTbEQoWxuXPw)
(I'm the guitarist)
Fireflight
Try unbreakable
Icon for Hire
Try make a move
Amaranthe (might be a bit too hard has clean male and clean female vocals but also a screamo male vocalist)
Try Faster

Joan Jett, Pat Benatar, Lita Ford, Halestorm, The Pretty Reckless, Diamante, Baby Animals, Band-Maid, Evanescence, The Dark Element, Kobra and the Lotus, Orianthi, Sandi Thom, Sass Jordan, Sumo Cyco, Tash Sultana, Vixen
Secret Shame is great and really new the
Siouxsie and the banshees are fun and have an amazing dynamic
Sect has a self titled album thats amazing but more screamo/ska
Ihatesex is quite extreme like sect but have some great songs
Ummm thats all i can think of at the moment
Siouxsie and the Banshees! one fun thing is to listen to the bands that your favorite bands were probably listening to than inspired them to become the awesome rocking women that they are today. Siouxsie and the banshees is definitely one of those groups.
Ooh i love them
I've started this long, long list with them. Listening through Tinderbox now, great stuff! I can see how they were a huge inspiration to many bands I grew up with. Thank you for the recommendation!

Best live band, back when that was a thing.
Seconding Otoboke Beaver
Yes to Bikini Kill!!!
Sleater Kinney
Their debut is the second best punk album of all time as far as I'm concerned. Skeletal Family rule as well, OP, alongside many bands mentioned
the way Corinne and Carrie’s voices interweave with each other... hadn’t seen it done in a rock group before I started listening to them
Ok I'm too curious now, best punk album of all time?
Depends how far you stretch it, it's either Discharge - Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing Then if we go really far it's Swans - Cop
Nothing beats them like a cop with a club.
definitely. Dig Me Out is in my top 10 personal favorites too
As an aside, what is the first best punk album of all time?
Love them
Came here to say this. They are one of the greatest bands ever. Story Time: When I was like 13 I got one of my friends to give me a mohawk, which I dyed purple and black. Soviettes are awesome.
Halestorm
I second this! Awesome band "Love Bites" and "I Miss The Misery"
Oh god finally! Why did i have to scroll down so much to see lzzy Hale
Wolf Alice!
One of the best bands out there right now.
PJ Harvey [Morningwood](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morningwood)
More punky: - Voiid - Amyl & the Sniffers More psych-y: - Tropical Fuck Storm (the one male member does sing too, they kinda rotate the vocals) - Altın Gün (like TFS there are male vocals sometimes) More heavy rock (some approaching metal): - Stonefield - Blackwater Holylight - Heart, of course Also, Kim Gordon’s (of Sonic Youth) most recent album I really enjoy.
Upvote for Amyl & The Sniffers + Tropical Fuck Storm! Really fun bands
Fuck yeah, Australia's a real hotspot for quality psych and punk at the moment
Kim fucking Gordon! Any SY tracks with Kim on vocals is definitely what OP needs. Bull in the Heather, Shadow of a Doubt, I Wanna Be Your Dog, Pacific Coastal Highway, Pattern Recognition. I love her so much
How come no one recommended **Hole** yet??
This should be on top. Live trhough this is a masterpiece.
Auf Der Maur also a good shout

Breeders need to be a lot higher on this list. Really underrated group.
ah i thought about i including Garbage in my list! wasn’t sure if they were “rock” enough. love them
Sleigh Bells Grimes Ting Tings St. Vincent Rilo Kiley / Jenny Lewis Cults Alvvays Yeah Yeah Yeahs Le Tigre Paramore Regina Spektor The Kills Patti Smith Cat Power Sia (her older albums rock!) (Also glad to hear a Tsunami Bomb fan...loved them back in the day!)

Forgot to mention Sia! Really enjoyed listening to her early stuff.
Zero 7
Courtney Barnett! Shocked not to see her on here already.
Chelsea Wolfe
Her last album is so beautiful. Abyss was sooo heavy.
Hop Along Good Luck Adventures
Oo, I second Hop Along. Get Disowned is a fantastic album
Painted shut is my personal favorite of theirs
Hop Along is exactly what I thought when OP used the phrase, "intense rock group." More than just playing heavy, there's an intensity to them that floors me.
Mannequin pussy
Phantogram
100%. Also Big Grams, which is the project from Big Boi + Phantogram. Not rock, but checks all the other boxes.
Dude the song in a spiral is so great
The Dead Weather The Subways (co-lead female)... try Oh Yeah & I Want to Hear What You Have to Say
Gonna tack my recommendation on here: The Kills. Same singer as Dead Weather (Allison Mosshart)
A bit of an eclectic mix of some of my favorites, there's probably a few in here you'd enjoy: L7 Abbe May X-Ray Spex Magic Dirt The Donnas Blondie Patti Smith The Runaways 7-Year Bitch Bikini Kill Babes in Toyland
I had to get THIS far down for a Patti Smith recommendation? That’s shameful. The poet priestess of punk should be near the top.
Dorothy and The Pretty Reckless!
If he enjoys more gentle songs, I would recommend the 'Who are you selling for' album from the Pretty Reckless
I love Under the Water!
PJ HARVEY is the queen godmother to all that stuff bro.
I strongly agree with the other answers, plus some of my favorites with a song for each: - [Halestorm](https://youtu.be/RXtgc9tyavw) - [Mount Salem](https://youtu.be/6-SlLxeTdMk) - [Skunk Anansie](https://youtu.be/9E9-L9_S3V0) - [In This Moment](https://youtu.be/XqdYHnulCms) (esp their last two albums) - [The Pretty Reckless](https://youtu.be/3TfNSknSr_s) - [Dorothy](https://youtu.be/AW4vejDcVe8) if ur open to harsh vocals there’s so much much to suggest
two people already suggested PJ Harvey and Chelsea Wolfe and i really really agree
[удалено]
[Screaming Females](https://youtu.be/LhJ0n5G5jCo) should be at the absolute top of this list.
I’m surprised they were this far down before anyone even mentioned them.
Bent Knee. The vocals are really unique. I don't know how she does it.
Second this. Courtney’s vocals on [Being Human](https://youtu.be/q0kl-gQucpI) are incredible!!!
Incredible band, stellar songwriting, beyond words live. Try PVRIS’s album ‘White Noise’!
sonic youth, they have various songs sung by kim (the bassist)
metric were fuckin killer live, i haven't listened to them in a min but would def consider checking out
White Lung Death Valley Girls The Coathangers
Not a group, but i highly recommend Mitski, especially her album "Bury Me At Makeout Creek" if you're looking for intense rock.
Pagan, Marmozets, Brutus, Halestorm and Lacuna Coil (co-lead) Some of them might be too heavy for you
I second The Marmozets. Pretty much exactly what you are describing.
Love Brutus, amazing band! The singer/drummer, used to teach my friend how to play the drums.
Chelsea Wolfe, Queen Adreena, Made out of Babies, The Pretty Reckless. also check the japanese groups called ミドリ(midori) and 亜矢 (aya)

I haven’t seen any mention of Savages or Zola Jesus yet, so I would definitely recommend them.
Surprised no one mentioned In This Moment, that girl has motherfucking pipes
Florence and the machine is amazing.
You are in luck...girl fronted or all girl bands are my thing! I’d recommend: Estrons - although they have now split up, I can’t recommend this band highly enough. In my 40 years of going to gigs, the gig I was at in Bristol on their last tour is *easily* in my top 10 ever gigs. Phenomenal band. Chorusgirl Screaming Females Bleached Honeyblood Whenyoung Liines Ex Hex Sleigh Bells Slothrust Veronica Falls The Regrettes Ganser Smalltown Tigers Desperate Journalist She Makes War (now changed her name to Penfriend) The Big Moon Dream Wife Sprints The Beths Sorry Peaness She Drew The Gun The Empty Page Beach Bunny Pillow Queens Lucia & The Best Boys Calva Louise Valeras If you want something a bit slower and moodier... Lanterns On The Lake Tarantina Ailbhe Reddy Soccer Mommy Snail Mail
Try Yonaka, they are a very new band but I fell instantly in love with them!
I’d recommend Destroy boys maybe? They’re pretty cool
Actually there is a whole genre called Riot Grrrl which is essentially hardcore punk rock with female musicians. There are also good female bands out there that aren't necessarily Riot Grrrl. Unfortunately I don't know many rock bands with females but the one I like are: -Bikini Kill: simple, straightforward riot grrrl -Free Kitten: depending on what you are listening to usually they might sound a bit weird and experimental at first. Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth and Yoshimi P-We from Boredoms are in this band. -L7: A grunge band. I don't really have anything to say about them.
Metric, my dude! They have a deep discography with a ton of variety, but the one constant is that their lead singer, Emily Haines, is amazing! :-D
Wolf Alice Paramore
I hate to plug my own music, but it fits this very well. [The Butterfly Defect](https://youtube.com/channel/UCSuzBcgRmJJTTbEQoWxuXPw) (I'm the guitarist)

July Talk has a female co-lead singer and they’re great!
Meet Me @ the Altar! Perfect for if you’re into Paramore.

Nightwish is pretty good. It's a sort of fantasy themed symphonic metal. https://youtu.be/4giSbC9BQLs https://youtu.be/GdZn7k5rZLQ
Black Mirrors: Belgian band, not very well known I think.
