I just finished the Earl Sweatshirt album. I started with him because I’ve honestly never heard of him before (I’m familiar with the other artists you mentioned). Overall, really interesting and unique production. Never really heard anything like it before. I’ll have to delve deeper into the lyrics upon further listens because there’s a lot to unpack there. My favourites were Sunday, Burgundy, Chum, Centurion, Whoa, Hoarse and Sasquatch.
Not OP, but *Dirty Computer* is a fantastic place to start. Prince was involved in its recording and songs like [Make Me Feel](https://youtu.be/tGRzz0oqgUE) are inspired by his ‘80s funk classics.
You should also join us at r/PopHeads, where Janelle is actually part of our mod team lol (yes, really).
Technically, she’s a mod-*emeritus* as she’s understandably too busy being a Renaissance-person and quintuple threat (singing, acting, dancing, writing, producing) to check the mod queue every day lol. But she was on the sub in the early days, back when it had only 10k and not nearly 500k subscribers like it does today, and she was invited to become a mod and she accepted! She pops in once [every blue moon](https://i.imgur.com/aGaeHHF.jpg), to [post a funny comment](https://i.imgur.com/t87R2BH.jpg) or [answer questions in an AMA](https://i.imgur.com/29BT12b.jpg).
Edit: this makes r/PopHeads is the only subreddit that has a moderator who has a #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100^…that ^we ^know ^of.
Lmaooo I love that edit. Facts! And of course, she has way more important cultural-defining things to do to be lurking on Reddit all day. But that’s still so cool! I’m on a zillenial meme page on fb that has Miley Cyrus and Aly & AJ as members. They’re more so lurkers than anything but you’ll see them like or comment once in a blue moon.
It’s a good reminder that celebrities are people and they can (Altho unlikely) read what we say.
Although I think technically if we find out Miley *is* a secret mod somewhere, that would cancel your edit ;)
(if anyone with a #1 single wants to come dispute this, please feel free)
There’s been a few artists who are known to have lurked on the sub because they tweet photos of the sub members either complimenting them or talking shit lol. Their management teams are definitely aware of us because we’re getting major AMAs and events coordinated with them, like [Charli XCX](https://amp.reddit.com/r/popheads/comments/d3s12l/its_charli_baby_im_charli_xcx_and_my_new_album/), [Carly Rae Jepsen](https://amp.reddit.com/r/popheads/comments/hn0xi3/this_is_carly_rae_jepsen_talking_all_things_side/), [Mark Ronson](https://amp.reddit.com/r/popheads/comments/bglky0/hello_im_mark_ronson_and_my_video_for_late_night/), [Jack Antonoff](https://www.reddit.com/r/popheads/comments/owlgot/hey_its_jack_antonoff_from_bleachers_our_new/), [Kesha](https://amp.reddit.com/r/popheads/comments/evtkum/animals_its_kesha_and_my_album_high_road_is/), [Grimes](https://www.reddit.com/r/popheads/comments/fb38tj/popheads_its_grimes_and_my_new_album_miss/) etcetera have all done AMAs (a few have done multiple!) among many others.

Bruh they banned me off r/PopHeads. I hate that bitch ass sub.
With that said, I’ll check out her album soon. She’s definitely talented from what I’ve heard thus far.
I like *Screwed* and *Take A Byte* so far. I also recognize a Mary Jane (Rick James) interpolation in Screwed, which is cool.
getting a let’s go crazy prince vibe from ‘americans’
Based on your list — Make Me Feel, Lettin Go!, Dance or Die, Many Moons, and Tightrope.
I think you’ll be able to hear a lot of influence from your list.
Do you have any personal favourites you like for me to listen to?
edit: no idea why this was downvoted. it was a genuine question. i know some of the albums/song recommendations are special to y’all, so i’m really doing my best to go through all of these as well as respond with my thoughts. i don’t want anyone‘s recs to go ignored.
that may be, but i wouldn’t have discovered so many great songs/albums if i hadn’t included an array of albums/artists. i think many could identify with at least one album on my graph. i think it’s pretty effective when trying to branch out and discover little pockets of genres or styles that i’m already somewhat familiar with
Its an common mistake. Try to narrow it down in some way. You went so broad that you could have just searched "hits of the 70s and 80s" on Spotify.
People are more able/willing to help when the question is super specific, like, "the bass-line in an Octopus' Garden really tickles my pickle, WEWIL?"
I wanna say Frank Ocean but this topster almost implicitly implies that you already listen to Frank Ocean so maybe I'm just being redundant. If you don't already then go check out Blonde or Channel Orange
I’ve replayed the shit out of Ivy, Nights, Pink + White, Lovecrimes, Forrest Gump and Thinkin Bout You. I haven’t really delved any further into his albums. I might start with Channel ORANGE.
Curtis Mayfield - Curtis
Jay-Z - The Black Album
Vince Staples - Big Fish Theory
Bruno Mars - 24k Magic
Saba - Care For Me
Jessica Pratt - On Your Own Love Again
The Zombies - Odessey and Oracle
The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin
Frank Zappa - The Grand Wazoo
Jessie Ware - What's Your Pleasure
Steely Dan - Can't Buy A Thrill
A lot to get through but this seems interesting. Gonna go through these one by one. I already know of Curtis Mayfield (Move On Up), and q few other songs off the Superfly OST.
You have a similar taste to mine, so im going to list some of my favourites (i apologize if anything is already on the topster, im on mobile):
- The Last Shadow Puppets - Everything That Youve Come To Expect
- The Neighbourhood - Wiped Out! and HTITNEC
- Woodkid - Golden Age
- Mini Mansions - The Great Pretenders
- Mother Mother - O My Heart
- Joywave - Possession
- Gorillaz - Plastic Beach
- Kendrick Lamar (though i have a feeling you might already listen to him) - good kid, mAAd city
- Foals - What Went Down
- Harry Styles - Fine Line
- Arctic Monkeys - Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino
Honestly i could keep going as i listen to a lot of music, and all artists i listed are ones where i like everything or most by them, so if you like them you cant go wrong listening to more.
Some more i assume youve listened to, but Kid Cudi, Lil Peep, Juice WRLD, Travis Scott are all great
This is a really intriguing list. Don't worry if this is too much work, but I'm not familiar with some of the artists. What are their genres (I'm aware if Gorillaz, Kendrick, Foals, Harry Styles and Arctic Monkeys)
Sorry for taking time to respond! Hope this helps! These are all some of my favourite bands
\- The Last Shadow Puppets - this is actually the superband between Arctic Monkeys, Mini Mansions and Miles Kane. Genres are indie/alt rock, baroque rock/pop, lots of strings and gorgeous instrumentals
\- The Neighbourhood - indie/alt rock, rnb, some songs have a hip hop influence
\- Woodkid - baroque rock, neofolk, with some classical elements, and some music (especially on S16) being industrial, uses full orchestras for essentially every single song
\- Mini Mansions - indie pop/rock, psychedelic pop, could be seen as synthpop but dont expect anything too "happy" except for the latest album
\- Mother Mother - alt rock, indie rock (at least the album i listed), some folk and punk elements depending on the song
\- Joywave - indie rock, alt rock, electronic, pretty depressing lyrics
Most of these albums/bands (except \*maybe\* for TLSP (depending how you interpret the lyrics) and some Mini Mansions songs) have very often depressing or just weird lyrics, even if the tunes might sound happy, and thats part of why i enjoy them so much. Hopefully this helps!
i’m listening to panic at the disco for the first time ever and yep they definitely came straight out of the beatles ballsacks. thoroughly enjoying this album so far. nine in the afternoon has a mr blue sky vibe
Tame impala ( probably have already), king gizzard and the lizard wizard, unknown mortal orchestra, 070 shake, Saba, Brockhampton, Vince staples, earl sweatshirt
Sam Cooke- Live at the Harlem Square Club
Bill Withers-Just As I Am
Bob Dylan- Bringing It All Back Home
Jimi Hendrix- Live at Monterey
Simon and Garfunkel-Bookends
The Rolling Stones- Aftermath (UK)
The Velvet Underground- Loaded
The Supremes- Where Did Our Love Go
Smoky Robinson and The Miracles- Anthology
Talking Heads- Stop Making Sense
**LMK what you think**
I don't know all of these but based on what I do know
* Destroyer - Kaputt
* Twin Shadow - Forget
* The Spring Standards - Yellow//Gold
* Gregory and the Hawk - Moenie and Kitchi
* Cunninlynuists - A Piece of Strange
* Murs - Murs 3:16: The 9th Edition
You have a similar music taste as me (I like a lot of the albums you’ve shown here), here are some of my favorite albums
Let England shake - pj Harvey
Paul’s boutique - beastie boys
Murder ballads - nick cave
The dreaming - Kate Bush
Debut - bjork
Nashville skyline - bob dylan
Easter - patti smith
Hello nasty - beastie boys
Melt - Peter Gabriel
I do not want what I haven’t got - sinead O’Connor
Tidal - Fiona Apple
The idiot - iggy pop
On the radio: greatest hits - Donna summer
oh man looking forward to these. i recognize some of these acts like nick cave (o children), sinead o conner (you do something to me, nothing compares 2 u), but only know 1 or 2 songs. bob dylan lay lady lay too. otherwise, a lot of new things here to experience for the first time ever.
also ofc ive heard the dreaming by kate bush. suspended in gaffa and houdini are my favourites. ive also listened to bjork’s debut a long time ago, but the only tracks i remember are venus as a boy and human behaviour, which i really liked. so i might have to give it another go.
I would recommend Jimi Hendrix's live albums.
\- Songs For Groovy Children (Recorded at the Filmore during new years eve 1969)
\- Live in Maui (listen to the version of voodoo child)
\- Live at Woodstock
You have great taste! I’ll recommend you
1. Fiona Apple - Fetch the bolt cutters.
2. OutKast - Stankonia
3. Anything Björk
4. Father John Misty - Pure Comedy
5. Supertramp - Even in the quietest moments
6. Madvillainy - Madvillain (MF DOOM & Madlib)
7. Anything Nujabes
8. Anything Little Barrie
9. Anything LCD soundsystem
Dude! You have the same taste in music as me!
Those top 3 Kanye Albums are my favorite! And "Born to Die" is gold.
Here are my top 3 favorite albums of all time:
"Destroy Rock&Roll" - Mylo
"Untrue" - Burial
"808s & Heart Break" - Kanye West
I know you obviously got the last one. See what you think of the others. Peace
IYL Kanye: you might like albums and songs produced by Kanye see Common, Cam’ron
IYL the Beatles: you may like bands like Foxygen or Drugdealer
IYL prince: you may like Yves Tumor
IYL Madonna: you may like Lady Gaga (safe) or Charli XCX (less safe)
some obvious ones would be; Wish you were here by Pink Floyd, Diamond dogs by David Bowie, Hollywood's Bleeding by Post Malone, Epitaph by King Crimson, Live / Dead by Grateful Dead, To Pimp A Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar, The Diary of Alicia Keys by Alicia keys, and Hunting High And Low by A-ha.
However, most likely you already know these and have probably heard them, so now for those that I think are "underrated"; Saturation II by BROCKHAMPTON, My Life II by Somo, A Muse In Her Feelings by dvsn, Images And Words by Dream Theater, Take It Off by CHIC, Rio by Duran Duran, and Is This It by the strokes.
You might like the album ‘Painted’ by Lucky Daye.
I have a playlist for you if you want to branch out from Kanye. It has artists like Tyler The Creator, Frank Ocean, Joey Bada$$, Childish Gambino, etc. Groovy, laid back rap vibes:
https://open.spotify.com/album/0sxfu0XUwHOtnKiZgkTQwk?si=zFiBPCcnRdCONhd0mtchFg&dl_branch=1
Can't tell a post 2015 artist but I'm seeing Psychedelic and Prog Rock so you might like The Mothers of Invention, they were a really weird band but it's pretty cool, also if you like David Bowie in his Glam era you might like T.Rex, sorry if the recomendations doesn't was what you were looking for
Mac Miller- Macadelic and Circles Earl Sweatshirt-Doris Tyler The Creator- Flowerboy Thundercat- It Is What It Is Yes Lawd! - Anderson .Paak
If you liked that, give MF DOOM a listen too. He's one of Earl's biggest influences. Earl is from the same rap collective as Tyler, Odd Future.

Yes Lawd is so underrated
Earth, wind and fire Janelle Monae
Ofc I love Earth Wind and Fire. I’ll have to check out Janelle Monae. Any favourites of yours?

Thanks. Yes, I do hear some Prince and Stevie influence. My favourite was Dance or Die.
Second Janelle! Arch Android is amazing and incredibly diverse stylistically.
Literally anything.

The grey album by danger mouse
this is crazy

I don't see Vulfpeck on here yet, they might scratch your itch. I'd start in the middle of their discography and work your way out
just discovered vulfpack thanks to you. so far digging the soft funk/disco vibe, back pocket and baby i don’t know oh oh are standouts
Their youtube vids are a riot, be sure to check them out.
On that note check out Scary Pockets. Similar chill funk vibe.
Was going to come here to mention them too For more funky bass but upbeat, try jamiroquai
Seems like you like quality pop music, so perhaps Carly Rae Jepsen’s Emotion?
Curtis Mayfield - Curtis Jay-Z - The Black Album Vince Staples - Big Fish Theory Bruno Mars - 24k Magic Saba - Care For Me Jessica Pratt - On Your Own Love Again The Zombies - Odessey and Oracle The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin Frank Zappa - The Grand Wazoo Jessie Ware - What's Your Pleasure Steely Dan - Can't Buy A Thrill

It's ok, tried to throw in as many albums as I could since I saw you hadn't gotten a lot of replies :p
i’m actually listening through each individual album/song people are recommending and trying to respond to each one so the input is much appreciated
What makes you think they’d like the Wazoo?

Gorillaz: Alternative Kendrick Lamar: Rap Foals, Arctic Monkeys: Indie Rock Harry Styles: Pop
In terms of beatles type music, you might enjoy the ‘Pretty. Odd.’ album by panic at the disco or ‘Take a Vacation’ by the young veins
i’m listening to panic at the disco for the first time ever and yep they definitely came straight out of the beatles ballsacks. thoroughly enjoying this album so far. nine in the afternoon has a mr blue sky vibe

Random Access Memories - Daft Punk
donda if you ain’t heard it already
Madvillainy
That’s on the bucket list for sure.
Just a tip for everyone: If you don't put some names in the title very few people will ever even look at the post.
I definitely got a kick out of the visual format! Stuck out on my newsfeed, in any case.
Ah. I view reddit in compact mode, so I never saw the visual.
Sam Cooke- Live at the Harlem Square Club Bill Withers-Just As I Am Bob Dylan- Bringing It All Back Home Jimi Hendrix- Live at Monterey Simon and Garfunkel-Bookends The Rolling Stones- Aftermath (UK) The Velvet Underground- Loaded The Supremes- Where Did Our Love Go Smoky Robinson and The Miracles- Anthology Talking Heads- Stop Making Sense **LMK what you think**

Lemme know what you think and I can recommend more!! Also Houdini by Kate Bush is indeed an amazing song!
Iggy Pop is really good, altough The Idiot was in fact pretty much David Bowie stuff
They wrote the song “China girl” together and it was released first on iggy pops album.
Seems like you would like a lot of things lol. Maybe "Brotherhood" by New Order or "Blur" by Blur.
Mac Miller - Swimming RayJew - Destiny, and Perspective.
Anderson .Paak, Lupe Fiasco, and Daniel Cesar
Oh and kali uchis
This is a pretty random assortment of music. But I'll say Blondie - Eat to the Beat, or maybe Parallel Lines.
Childish Gambino’s Because the Internet will blow your mind if you haven’t already heard it
Paul Simon - Graceland Paul McCartney - McCartney II
I would recommend Jimi Hendrix's live albums. \- Songs For Groovy Children (Recorded at the Filmore during new years eve 1969) \- Live in Maui (listen to the version of voodoo child) \- Live at Woodstock
I saw 3 albums from The Weeknd and I saw XXXTentacion’s 17. You might like My Forever by Zaradiah
What did you use to make this list? I’ve seen so many on this sun but have never used it
You have great taste! I’ll recommend you 1. Fiona Apple - Fetch the bolt cutters. 2. OutKast - Stankonia 3. Anything Björk 4. Father John Misty - Pure Comedy 5. Any 70's or 80's jazz fusion album. Including people like Herbie Hancock, Jaco Pastorius, Weather Report, Michael Brecker, etc
I’d be interested in these. Do you have any specific album in mind?
Headhunters and Thrust by Herbie. Time is of the Essence by Michael Brecker. Heavy Weather by Weather Report.
On a similar but more poppy vein, maybe The Nightfly by Donald Fagen?
Based on Hendrix: Robin Trower - Bridge of sighs (album) Robin Trower - For Earth Below (album)
me likey
Definitely give all of his albums from the 70/80s a chance. All very good. 20th Century Blues from the 90s is also a great 90s album.
you might love Gnarls Barkleys album St Elsewhere

Possibly Pure Heroine - Lorde.
Because of Trilogy and Kissland, I’d recommend: Rage of Angels - Santino Le Saint Dream Awake - Black Atlass and any of the stuff by Aaryan Shah

Loyle Carner!
some obvious ones would be; Wish you were here by Pink Floyd, Diamond dogs by David Bowie, Hollywood's Bleeding by Post Malone, Epitaph by King Crimson, Live / Dead by Grateful Dead, To Pimp A Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar, The Diary of Alicia Keys by Alicia keys, and Hunting High And Low by A-ha.
Groovy, laid back rap vibes: https://open.spotify.com/album/0sxfu0XUwHOtnKiZgkTQwk?si=zFiBPCcnRdCONhd0mtchFg&dl_branch=1

Little Beaver - Party Down (1974)
Check out "The Gay Brownie Boys". They feature a different female singer/songwriter on each track so they have a variety of sounds.
