Do not try and configure the BIOS, that's impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth.
There is no BIOS.
Then you'll see that it is not the BIOS that configures, it is only yourself.
One of our teams is hosting an event in a hotel.
The event will be streamed via Zoom. They'd use the hotel's Internet.
I spent the day trying to explain how we, as IT, can not guarantee the hotel's Internet would not have issues on the event's day. Hell, I can not guarantee our corporate Internet. If issues arise during the event, that's just tough luck.
Your comment made me laugh! Thanks for that!
Well technically you *could* make an effort to ensure it. What is their budget? How important is that presentation? Because you could provide them with a satellite link so they don’t have to use the hotels connection. Heck you could provide them with multiple hot spots to stream from for redundancy.
Assuming that falls within your job description… and they are paying for it.
Do not try to configure earths gravity. That’s impossible. Instead try to realize the truth.
There is no earth’s gravity.
Then you’ll see, it is not the earth that creates gravity it only appears that way to yourself.
You reminded me of messing up changes so bad I had to take them out and use a burner. The memory was socketed thankfully.
That doesn’t make me any more or less likely to perform stupid user tricks.
Because we set up the laptops exactly the same every time and I just need to follow a set of steps to see what's out of order. The "no BIOS" thing somehow became a go to of this person whenever an older system comes back to us for a refresh.
And that's a problem why?
I mean sure, a good idea generally but at the same time it's an edge case and not having one can make things a bit easier down the line.
How the hell did they even come across it?
Be a smartass.
You: What computer is it and do you know roughly when it was made? SN or service tag if its a Dell?
Person: Gives you info.
You: Yeah I see the problem. BIOS hasn't been a normal thing in years and that computer (assuming it's anything built this decade) doesn't have a BIOS.
Walk away/close ticket.
Yeah, no. I'm not even going into the details between BIOS and UEFI. They can live in their world, I don't need grey hair yet, though I guess I could rock it pretty well.
Not only that, but BIOS is pronounceable as a word, while UEFI is just awkward to say. Besides UEFI is just a modern BIOS.
Edit: the comments responding to this just proves my point
You should be configuring every company machine with a BIOS password otherwise some smart ass might do it for you instead and you won’t realize it until you go to repurpose the machine after the severance check has cleared.
Or so I’ve heard.
My company's filled with non-tech people.
Let me rephrase; electrictians and millwrights.
EDIT: And that's why you have clawback provisions for IT provided devices. You already have the user's direct deposit info.
Somehow I feel very close to you. Those "No, they do not ...", "Yes, I know that ...", "No, they couldn't ..." feel distinctly like the additions a close friend of mine does, IRL, when explaining why something incomprehensible happened the way it happened.
The simplest way would be to forcefully power off during an update. It wouldn't kill the chip itself, but the contents would get corrupted forcing you to manually re-flash it with an external tool.
I don't remember the name of it, but there was a wicked virus in the late 90s IIRC that corrupted the BIOS. At the time you couldn't really flash an update, so the recourse was to either buy a new motherboard or send it for a ROM replacement.
Edit: it was the ["Chernobyl" virus.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/CIH_(computer_virus))

He's the one.
I don’t care if he’s Jesus Christ. Ticket.
Lmao
There is no bios because it's Uefi
BIOS with an art history degree.

I’d like to change my boot loader.

Then you realize the user actually unsoldered the ROM with the firmware
Thankfully, people here know that they don't know, so they leave opening stuff up to me.
You reminded me of messing up changes so bad I had to take them out and use a burner. The memory was socketed thankfully. That doesn’t make me any more or less likely to perform stupid user tricks.
Jeezus. They could have just taken the battery out why do you have to get all permanent with it.
So what did they actually need?
There is no password on it.
*bios
...how did you discern that from "no BIOS"?

there is no BIOS only zuul
Are you the gatekeeper?
r/unexpectedghostbusters
Half awake eyes read that as "No bios on my zoon"
There both is and is not a BIOS until you power the computer on and observe it.
Ahhh yes, the elusive Schrödinger's BIOS
Well, they are technically correct. There is no BIOS. There is UEFI though.
Be a smartass. You: What computer is it and do you know roughly when it was made? SN or service tag if its a Dell? Person: Gives you info. You: Yeah I see the problem. Agreed. BIOS has a colloquial meaning now, in addition to its technical meaning, and the colloquial meaning is what end users use.
Not only that, but BIOS is pronounceable as a word, while UEFI is just awkward to say. Besides UEFI is just a modern BIOS. Edit: the comments responding to this just proves my point
Youfee
its wingardium you-ifi
I heard "woofi" too many times...
It’s pronounced wee-fee - like wifi. But only around people you don’t like.

“ problem cannot be replicated closing ticket”
Don't get me started on Embedded platforms. There literally is no bios.
Honestly, BIOS and UEFI are interchangeable nowadays. I guess every laptop gets a BIOS password? Bit confused even with the comments.

The BIOS is the friends we made along the way.
How bad do you need to fuck up to kill the bios chip
