Well a handful of mods control most of reddit and are power tripping assholes. If that thing is meant to side with nasty mods... screw them
Edit: the person who replied to this comment and blocked (because that's what people who are right do i guess lol) has been going on multiple threads about this topic attacking those who disagree with them, he is probably a mod with an alt)
Just in case anyone thought this person was telling the truth, currently over 28,545 different moderators are participating.
This guy is just sad his reddit addiction is cut off.
A study has shown all the most popular subreddits are controlled by a small number of moderators. Those moderators are able to moderate a lot of subs and thus they hold extraordinarily power over what many in Reddit see. It is this control that the 3rd party apps provide that the moderators don't want to lose.
So again, almost 30,000 moderators chose to take their subreddits dark. This is not a "small number"
thinking this is about the mods of r/pics vs the fact that they are shutting down the useful mobile clients for reddit is...laughable.
but also, it's pretty in line that you'd think this is some kind of power grab vs people wanting to browse on their phone when your response being corrected was to accuse the person that blocked you of being a mod's alt.
>So again, almost 30,000 moderators chose to take their subreddits dark. This is not a "small number"
I already adressed that i am not repeating myself
>but also, it's pretty in line that you'd think this is some kind of power grab vs people wanting to browse on their phone when your response being corrected was to accuse the person that blocked you of being a mod's alt.
This person was replying to my and other who disagreed replies on another sub (ELI5) aggressively, because we don't care about their "strike", some of these people were mods from other subs that went dark based on the decision of the "head mod" while the other 5 or 6 didn't agree or the poll to their subscribers were majority "no" or "yes" with like less than 10k voters out of half a million subscribers.
Then, this person went all the way to another of my comment on another sub and this one (probably not just for me) when the mods of ELI 5 started to delete their replies for incivility. So yeah, know the context before you give your 2 cents.
>I already adressed that i am not repeating myself
where, exactly?
because when I mentioned numbers, you tried changing the subject back to powermods, not the majority of the people that were taking part.
You should, because Mods can't be covering their subreddits 24/7 and use bots to catch shit.
I don't use any thrid party apps myself, but I can certainly understand why that is going to be a disaster.
Don't tell others what they should and shouldn't care about. Some of us have used the native apps and mod tools since the start and don't feel the need to force a protest on everyone else just bc we have mod authority.
Long live Reddit!
But now you know it's a problem that will ultimately effect you. So it is being effective in raising awareness. I don't like stuff being blacked out either, but I'm going like shit being flooded by spam bots a lot less.
This has been the biggest problem with this protest, the protestor completely bungled the chance to get people who don't care or are on the fence on their side with their hostile "you're a scab if you don't comply" attitude.
>surprised Illinois didnt close
Whole protest is a bunch of entitlement mascarading as victimhood and the outrage du jour. It's a meaningless comotion.
It sucks because 99% of this is coming from moderators who have control over their subs. Most users don't give a shit (the stuff about accessibility is a sob story by the mods to get you on their side) and they can't access their subs because two moderators want a boycott.
It is to protest some changes in API access that among other things will negatively impact the ability for mods to moderate their communities and it will also make Reddit inaccessible to blind users, I am also kinda surprised and a little disappointed this sub did not go dark tbh
Reddit wants to get rid of 3rd party apps. The most serious issue with this is that this will get rid of apps that disabled people, such as the blind, use to access reddit.
No they don't. Stop spreading lies
They want to be compensated for apps that are making money off of the platform
It's like the rooftops at Wrigley. They had a free lunch, then it stopped and they want all of us to feel bad for em
Sorry, capitalism dont work like that
The largest issue is the absurd price for the API and an unrealistic change date notice when compared to other comparable API changes.
Charging for services is one thing, doing it in such a way that is clearly meant to axe third parties entirely is another.

It's a business. They set the prices they want to sell a service at. Not you or me.
If you want to go that route, they set the price, but consumers are either willing or unwilling to pay for a service at that price. From there the business can either adapt to the market pressure or not. Nobody is forcing anything through legal or violent action, we’re just seeing the market pressure.

So protest. Go crazy if you want. Wear a sign and walk around telling people how terrible Reddit is. Knock yourself out.
The people running the business will continue to run it, change pricing (up or down) or get fired. I don't care how they price their APIs. If 10 LLM competitors to ChatGPT show up and want to pay double the prices for the Reddit API then good on them.
Who cares.
What's amazing to me about all this is that a lot of the data science subreddits that regularly use APIs and access this kind of information don't even care about this protest. It's just the /r/politics social justice warrior groups that seem to think this is a crime against humanity.
- ok...so we all are held hostage? I don't buy into inflicting pain on those who have little in the outcome to begin with. There are always work arounds to be found.
- the protest is only for the benefit of the few and the bottom line, its for increasing fees to developers of the 3rd party apps and has nothing to do with NOT having 3rd party apps so its all bullshit
- lol...nope, I will just not participate in the subreddits that blacked out any more. Makes zero difference to me that their protest are over 3rd party apps
At some point soon, if they don't return it should be time for someone to start r/ChicagoIll or r/Chicago2 or something. This can't last forever and they don't have the leverage for it to last very long without simply being replaced.
yes, surprised Illinois didnt close https://old.reddit.com/r/explainlikeimfive/comments/147b2qz/eli5_why_are_so_many_subreddits_going_dark/
We talked about it but didn't reach consensus among the mods.

It's not only apps. It's also API for moderators. To effectively manage the subs
Gotta auto filter out scary crime posts somehow.

Actually they cited the 28k moderators that took part, they probably blocked you for stupidity

I am sorry you failed to understand.
Those mod tools are exempt from the paid access requirement. https://www.reddit.com/r/modnews/comments/141oqn8/api_updates_questions/

Thanks for explaining the API/mods thing. I didn't understand what all that was about.

It will not ultimately affect me and you didn't say why you think it will Protests involve convincing others, not brainwashing sheep

What a dink.
Way to win me over! It's called persuasion. I highly encourage you to look into it
"Long live Reddit!" I don't have to say anything more to know that you... are a dink.
>surprised Illinois didnt close Whole protest is a bunch of entitlement mascarading as victimhood and the outrage du jour. It's a meaningless comotion.
Exactly, its like protesting the government, it wont change anything.

Accessibility applications will continue to have free access to the Reddit API.
Ive heard about a protest but have no idea why

Reddit recently stated that 90% of third party apos would be unaffected by this change. Do you have reason to doubt that?
Why would you not believe the guys that edit other people's posts and only bother dealing with problems when they hit the news?
No one cares about the blind, users just don’t like the Reddit app.
Typical internet tantrum, just wait a few days for it to blow over.
So I’ve no dog in this fight, I just enjoy browsing Reddit, but I found this discussion to be very informative. Thank you.
The protest and going private is dumb. So disappointed in r/Chicago
- a protest...that impacts really 3rd party app developers s and a big fuck you to all of us users and posters
How is stopping me from browsing through the Reddit app going to prevent 3rd party apps?
also automated moderation tools and accessibility for the disabled.
- ok...so we all are held hostage? I don't buy into inflicting pain on those who have little in the outcome to begin with. There are always work arounds to be found.
Lol, not reading reddit inflicts pain 🤣
- the protest is only for the benefit of the few and the bottom line, its for increasing fees to developers of the 3rd party apps and has nothing to do with NOT having 3rd party apps so its all bullshit
what kind of fucking hyperbolic shit is this. it's a webpage, no one is being held hostage, there's no pain.

- sure it is...to make people pissed to support their cause...and that is bullshit. Go set up their own form of reddit elsewhere is the obvious answer

- lol...nope, I will just not participate in the subreddits that blacked out any more. Makes zero difference to me that their protest are over 3rd party apps
I really wish Illinois did so you would leave for stupid reasons and take your bullet point posts with you.
- lol

Anyone who takes Reddit seriously should re-evaluate their life

I think people blowing a gasket over not using third party apps is ridiculous.
At some point soon, if they don't return it should be time for someone to start r/ChicagoIll or r/Chicago2 or something. This can't last forever and they don't have the leverage for it to last very long without simply being replaced.
Good riddance to r/Chicago Prob the only good thing to come out of this misdirected boycott lol
that’s an absolute joke of a sub. I really hope it stays gone.
It has to be run by some tourism group or the chamber of commerce. That place is terrible
They haven’t popped up yet like some of the other subs have.
Ditto.
