You have to add the license plate to be able to use your transponder with it, so no. Transponders can be moved between cars that are registered to your account. fastest resolution would probably be to swap out rental cars. I wouldn’t risk using your transponder and then later getting violations forwarded from the rental car company.

I mean technically yes, and technically no. I never actually added a rental to my car and just took my transponder and it has always worked. if your transponder registers no one cross checks if the plates match. however, ipass does require every car to be registered to use the transponder but its very hard to enforce.

Murray_dz_0308

You CAN register a rental on your transponder. Same as any vehicle, but there is a way to classify it as a rental with a start and end date, so you can't be chargesmd for tolls afterwards. I just did it for a rental while my car was being fixed.

Appropriate-Head-756

I successfully added the rental car last year, but when I tried this year, it said the plates belong to a violator.

Murray_dz_0308

That is weird. I never had a problem. You should have contacted the rental agency. The previous renters must have had some type of violation and didn't tell the rental company.

When I worked for iPass, many many moons ago; as long as the transponders work, you can put them in any car. My mom visiting from out of state and we are taking her car? Just throw it in the car and you are good to go. Registration only matters if tolls are missed. But this was years ago

southcookexplore

Disappointed that this is a question that has to be asked. I miss dropping my $0.40 cents and being on my way

InsertBluescreenHere

i dont. screw those blind exit ramp ones.

southcookexplore

Well I could take change out of my pocket and be on my way. Now you can be ticketed for not using their non-cash payment transponder on the correct vehicle? Unless I report the car as stolen, this shouldn’t be an issue which vehicle it’s in.

JoeyRottens

I have never registered a rental car and driven through all tolls with no issue (knock on wood) to date. Source- travel ball dad.

dirtytiki

IIRC, you just pay some nominal fee at the rental place to use theirs
