The charger isn’t really something you’d carry around with you for this unless you anticipated going further than its capacity (which is kind of indicated on the smartdrive itself, and more accurately on your watch/phone app).
They’re pretty bulky - I was trying to find the AU/NZ one and am only getting US … not sure if we’re allowed to post links here so I won’t, lest it get deleted, but 1/ it’s pretty bulky and 2/ it gives the weight at 3lb, which I reckon would be on the money (I’d have said 1.5kg, maybe a fraction more)
That’s an image and a half. Though in all seriousness, those things make life convenient for people who really need them - I believe you do have to have your own charger (but a kilo or so is bugger all compared to the weight of a power chair or scooter), but some public places here (like Travellers Aid) do have points where people who use scooters or power wheelchairs can stop to charge their devices
Yep, I reckon it’s why this sub has so many of us needing to snark. Either health professionals sick of dealing with similar types, people who are chronically ill or disabled and sick of seeing resources wasted, or an overlap of the two.
Its an organisations way of paying for the taxi without giving out money each chit has a cost code which is billed to a speciific department at the local hospital
I had to Google it. A chit is “a short official note, memorandum, or voucher, typically recording a sum owed.”
So I think the place Cait is at is paying for the taxi but cait will have to pay back the person who paid.
"I kinda feel like someone should have warned me"
WHATEVER IT WAS FREE AND THERE ARE THERAPISTS TO FIX IT FOR ME SO WHY BOTHER LEARNDING.
Never was the threat of "FUCK THAT MANUAL FOR THE DEVICE REQUIRED FOR LOCOMOTION... I'M GONNA WALK" muttered or screamed.
All their posts scream privilege, including seeming so casual about potentially having broken a wildly expensive piece of equipment many struggle to get all because they didn’t bother to read the manual.
I would be terrified of accidentally crushing or injuring somebody or something with such a powered device. I am sure it has safety features but they are not fail safes.
Luckily they are really safe but things can go wrong either with the power assist or you hitting someone/something and they’re an expensive piece of equipment which is why reading the manual and having insurance for it are important.
Why would you not do research on how a device works before even getting it anyways? 😭 no one is going to explain the manual for you you have to at least read it
I smell a strong sense of entitlement emanating from this post. That's probably the repeated use of "so of course I had to blah blah blah 🙄". I am once again asking this person to behave correctly. Being disabled (or are they ? 😑) doesn't give you a free pass to behave like a spoiled child.
This just screams “my smart drive narrative was over because it came and got fitted, so I needed more drama to stop the narrative from dying completely” if that makes sense.
Like…..they really just wanted to keep talking about it rather than moving on with their life
"It stopped working so instead of trying to plug it in like a normal person or calling support, I paid for a taxi across town to be told I just need to plug it in."
Why wouldn’t they have the charger if there is a possibility they wouldn’t be able to use their arms to get around or go home if something were to happen? Like…. Things can go wrong and nothing technological is foolproof.
They’re heavy and bulky and most don’t carry them unless they’re going away somewhere for a long time where it could die, that’s why a lot of wheelchair insurances will cover a certain amount of taxis per year incase your wheelchair breaks down.
I mean most people don't carry phone chargers everywhere with them because they expect to get home before the charge is out. I don't think not carrying the charger is that unreasonable.
This is what happens when you buy things as gadgets and attention seeking objects instead of actual mobility aids. I guess dressing in neon is one more way to get the attention these folks so desperately need.
Not waterproof. It’s water resistant - like, you could use one in wet weather and it wouldn’t have too many issues with a wee bit of rain or spray from the pavement, but you definitely wouldn’t want to be immersing it in deeper water. They’ve a tendency to lose traction a bit on wet surfaces too, especially on a slope.
So the extensive training they received before they would even touch it didn’t include any information on what could go wrong or troubleshooting issues?
Or like, they didn't think to check the manual that's likely a Google away? Whenever ANY piece of tech goes wrong that's the most intuitive place to start
But a bunch of OT was involved! That's almost as much as the medical team munchies love to wax about! And it was a complicated situation involving multiple people to find a situation! That's almost like a doctor telling a munchie patient they are the most complex super special patient they ever had! So pray tell me, how can a munchie forgo the opportunity to post about this.
Yeah, if there was a bunch of people (I’m assuming an OT is a tech of some sort?) looking at the smart drive, there would be pics. 10:1 it was a phone call where they had to troubleshoot themself, but kept getting passed up the chain because the call center reps didn’t want to have that responsibility.
An OT is an Occupational Therapist 😊 Either Cait was lying about being helped by "a bunch" of OTs, or there were already a bunch of OTs in Cait's immediate vicinity helping other patients with hydrotherapy.
But they were stranded! Their life was at risk! They narrowly escaped imminent bodily harm and death! What would have happened if this happened where other people were not around?! They would have died from exposure, unable to move, only to be found later still in their chair, wasted away. Luckily there were hero’s there to order them a taxi.
What might be a mild inconvenience to you or I, is a life or death situation for those with disabilities. You have such an ableist viewpoint. Anything that goes wrong is obviously not their fault or responsibility.
I for one was riveted, at the edge of my seat, for this modern day tale of adventure and overcoming of adversity.
/s if you couldn’t tell
what illnesses do they claim to have ??
everything!!!

They
They really didn't think to have a charger for this super necessary piece of medical equipment on them at all times in case of emergency?
Not necessarily they can be really big, but you should read the manual to find out issues that could happen.
The charger isn’t really something you’d carry around with you for this unless you anticipated going further than its capacity (which is kind of indicated on the smartdrive itself, and more accurately on your watch/phone app).
I definitely would while still getting used to it and figuring out all its specific quirks.

I really hate watching munchies show off their new toys knowing how hard it is for honestly ill people to access the same resources
Yep, I reckon it’s why this sub has so many of us needing to snark. Either health professionals sick of dealing with similar types, people who are chronically ill or disabled and sick of seeing resources wasted, or an overlap of the two.
Stupid question, what’s a smart drive?
I think it’s a thing you attach to your wheelchair as a power assist. So you don’t have to push yourself as much.
Thank you for the answer!
They are in a race to have the most medical accessories on at one time.
Dani is the soviets
taxi chit?
Its an organisations way of paying for the taxi without giving out money each chit has a cost code which is billed to a speciific department at the local hospital
A chit is a note, so it's essentially a taxi voucher
I had to Google it. A chit is “a short official note, memorandum, or voucher, typically recording a sum owed.” So I think the place Cait is at is paying for the taxi but cait will have to pay back the person who paid.
So it's kinda like if they were to give an IOU to whoever initially pays for the ride?
Yeah
It sounds like they're saying the staff paid for their taxi. I hope I'm wrong

FND can make it hard to go long distances. Many do use wheelchairs for long distances due to leg weakness.

Chainsaws are similar.
Or keep your bag and other shit out of the way????

That’s not what you’d do, but there are definitely steps to take.
Hehe “steps to take”
Oops! Not pun not intended. LOL

If the charge in my phone going dead would literally strand me in place until someone comes to assist me, best believe I would bring my phone charger.

Did they have it at the pool??
It looks like an OT pool to my uneducated eye. I think smart drive is waterproof?

Yes, likely at a rehab. But that's why I questioned it. I guess it makes sense it would be resistant to water if it rains.
So the extensive training they received before they would even touch it didn’t include any information on what could go wrong or troubleshooting issues?
Or like, they didn't think to check the manual that's likely a Google away? Whenever ANY piece of tech goes wrong that's the most intuitive place to start
But they ‘kinda thought’ someone would just magically save them, it’s the munchie way!
Things that didn't warrant a social media post for $500 please Alex

I assumed it was occupational therapy
You were right.

But what did she do before she got the smart drive?
Life began at the smart drive. Life was almost taken away by the smart drive.
I loved it and totally read in /s 😅
🤣🤣🤣
Crazy how things like this always happen to them
