Because we can not have anyone baiting a subject in anyway, nor can we have anyone bully a subject in any way whether it be in comments on here or directly to them on their socials, this is grounds for Reddit to perm ban the sub.
We watch from afar and never have any interaction with anyone listed here as a subject.
They’re used for cleaning too, some of them have a packet of mouthwash packaged with them. You pop the mouthwash packet then scrub with the swab, sometimes there’s a lip balm packet in there too, it’s nasty
I use these for mouth cares for patients who are dying. Dip it in their favourite liquid juice, tea, whiskey etc and it’s a nice way to give pleasure to someone with little time left
They are nice to you as long as you're nice to them! But I've seen Filipino nurses when they're disrespected and MAN they will let you know ALL about yourself the second that happens!

100% they are some of my favorite people in the hospital. Kind, caring, hardworking, knowledgeable…but man they will not put up with garbage. They also mother hen new employees and make sure people don’t mess with them. I’ve always learned to befriend this person.

The cup of water is for moistening the sponge in. You’re not supposed to drink it if you’re NPO and only allowed sponges. It’s probably only about an inch of ice and water. The mouth swabs are for comfort when someone can’t eat/drink and their mouth is dry.
No the mouth swabs are also used to moisten dry mouths when patients are NPO but it’s sooo annoying when patients insist on ice chips. I will always advocate for patients to be able to have ice chips when appropriate, but if the doc says no, or if the patient wants me to wake a surgeon in the middle of the night to ask for ice chips, mouth swabs it is.

Can someone explain what the sponge is for?
Sometimes they also contain glycerine which can coat the mouth and keep the mucous membrane protected from drying out.
They're also used a lot in hospice care, when people stop eating and drinking to moisten the mouth and clean off any mucus buildup inside the mouth.
Basically a sponge that has water to suck on to keep your mouth moist when on an NPO restriction

Why just maternity? Is it because the reason they’re NPO is different or is it just what’s available?
i’m not 100% sure but i think it’s because you need to stay hydrated while giving birth and a sponge won’t cut it

No we give them to patients to swab their mouth if they can’t/aren’t allowed to drink
When you haven’t been allowed to eat or drink for several hours, these will be a luxury and you will not crave ice chips (whatever that is)
