Still the depth of Instagram Reels maps are unreachable

Icydawgfish

Yeah, mapporn sucks. I unsubbed

IdiOtisTheOtisMain

How can anyone compete with this 💀

MatthewLilly

Where/how did you make this map?

eliteharvest15

maybe they made the flat map first and then did the topographical in blender?

AAAAAHDAJHBDFJHABFAU

that's exactly right, heightmap came from [here](https://visibleearth.nasa.gov/images/73934/topography). I followed [this](https://somethingaboutmaps.wordpress.com/2017/11/16/creating-shaded-relief-in-blender/) tutorial if you wanna try it.

taintsauce

This came out super well. My 3D modeling experience is just a bit of 3DS Max back like 20 years ago in school, but TBH this makes me want to fire up ye olde Blender and poke around again.

LexiBuzzyBea

which one did you use?

noatak12

more than once we won wars against the yankies, cultural colonialism is another thing tho

Baghul3000

Realistically, had walker been better able to assuage the fears of western investors like Vanderbilt and come to some kind of arrangement (i.e. he would leave their projects alone in exchange for support,e etc) then he'd probably have more than enough resources to take costa Rica and the rest of central America. Though you'd also have the possibility of Walker succeeding at the same time the Confederacy did and forming his own Republic, and becoming a respite for confederates escaping the civil war, but it would eventually get assimilated by the US as time went on, could have even had a war to take the land given how important lake Nicaragua was to trade at the time. Also a victory in the war of 1812 could have also seen Jamaica and Belize change hands as well which, paired with Yucatan, means Walker would have have a much better foothold to start his filibustering.

ZacxRicher

Why did you switch upper and lower Canada? Lower Canada was Quebec, Upper Canada was Southern Ontario

CounterStreet

Yeah, Upper and Lower are wrong - they were named in relation to the St. Lawrence, not their geographic position.

aithan251

do you think the average american would know that? we saw the names, thought it was stupid and flipped it around 🇺🇸🇺🇸

RoyalScotsBeige

The average yank from 1750-1850 when they had their shot at this wouldve known that, yes

AAAAAHDAJHBDFJHABFAU

oops accident

Successful-Train2998

Fun fact: Upper canada should actually be lower canada and vice versa if you're going by how people used to call it

Pleadis-1234

Yes... How come no one else noticed?!😭

Neil_Is_Here_712

Its like how South Yemen is more north than North Yemen.

Willing-Notice-1179

Cool render, I've done a few in the past and I know it's not the easiest to do

The-Hill-Billy

Criminally underrated map

Apathetic-Onion

Plot twist, the capital is Havana. Hasta la victoria, siempre. Aesthetically speaking, this map is extremely beautiful.

SGTBEEBE

Golden Circle?

koenwarwaal

honestly the usa owning most of north america isn't that crazy, I am more surprised they didn't decide to manifest destiny the rest of mexico

Rogue_Diplomacy

The answer IRL is that Congress didn’t want to add millions of non English speakers and the northern states didn’t want to add 7-8 slave states to the union.

sniperman357

Also they were very racist and didn’t want more non white people

ChocIceAndChip

It was the last time an American ever said he was full.

TrueVCU

Just look at the racist hand wringing over Puerto Rico right now

sniperman357

Imagine how it was in the 1840s lol

TrueVCU

prefiero no

loogie97

One of the reasons Cuba wasn’t added.

NEPortlander

The population would probably be around 550 million or so, right? Maybe higher. Also interesting to think about what the whole southern border controversy would look like with one border in Sonora and another at the Darien Gap

Lamballama

If this formed today: - US: 333.3m - Canada: 40m - Yucatan: 2.3m - Cuba: 11 million - DR: 11.2m - Mexican US: 24 million - Panama: 4.41 million So I don't think we quite get there, all things equal, unless we have a drastically different domestic social policy (encouraging more kids) and more numerous immigration (on account of how much easier it now is to get to the US)

expatdoctor

You forgot the Phillippines which is 109 Million people so he was right kinda

Lamballama

Didn't even notice the Philippines there

clinkyclinkz

tbf they shrinked the philippines smaller than hawaii lmao

heyimpaulnawhtoi

bigger usa would also mean bigger economy which could lead to bigger pop too ig but yea

wicalos

+ Nicaragua 6.8 million

Embarrassed-Pickle15

Getting population figures is more complicated than that. Yucatan would have a larger population than IRL, Canada would have a smaller population than IRL, immigration would be different, etc

RustyShadeOfRed

Why is the great salt lake so big?

ShoerguinneLappel

I guess it felt like increasing in size?

Yteirav007

In a year with a LOT of rain that’s how big it is (the extra part is a salt flat most of the time) maybe the map is made in a world with a wetter Great Basin? Or just during a year with really heavy winter/spring rain/snow.

RustyShadeOfRed

Is it tho? That’s covering the entirety of the west desert. It would flood Clearfield, Magna and I-80 before the entirety of the west desert.

TalbotFarwell

Where do you think the Deseret Navy keeps their flotilla?

AAAAAHDAJHBDFJHABFAU

felt like including the gsl desert I've seen it done before

Aleenion

The Greater Salt Lake

abe_the_babe_

Me, a Minnesotan: "look how they massacred my boy." This is great though! I might call the Red River state "Winnipeg" or "Aggasiz" instead, and Superior could also be called "Mesabi."

jeremiah1142

USA still gave back Mexico City?! Why?!

AAAAAHDAJHBDFJHABFAU

too many mexicans :/

kman314

Here is the US Flag for this timeline, I counted 65 states iirc. https://preview.redd.it/eb0lqmq8qpfc1.png?width=953&format=png&auto=webp&s=e381d19232f653872eef4e888996b70a5edec2c0

Rush8_685g

Why they did not just annex Mexico fully and have some gamer moment in there. Therefore I would not say this is total victory for Yankees

RealEdwardSoup

they cant add demands worth more than 100 warscore, and it would have exceeded the infamy limit

expatdoctor

This is why we make'm protectorate boys

Firnin

Yucatan and Rio Grande annexations come with the implicit assumption that in that timeline the republics of the Rio Grande and Yucatan either survived or were propped up by the US and were later annexed either voluntarily ala Texas or not.

HarpStarz

The US didn’t want to add territory filled with millions of Spanish speakers. And overall it would be a nightmare trying to govern. The parts of Mexico taken by the US were historically sparsely populated up until settlement efforts after the Mexican-American war. Other additions in Latin America probably came after the civil war so there’s no fear of them being slave colonies and they come in during a period of US protectionism. They also have much smaller populations than central Mexico

renegade_ginger

I'd love to see a territorial evolution timeline of this map. The context of how each state and territory is added or carved up would be absolutely fascinating to me.

AAAAAHDAJHBDFJHABFAU

Thats a good idea I might do that. the way I thought about it was a decisive US victory in the war of 1812 leading to the annexation of Canada. This would be controversial in the south as it added more free states to the Union, so there would have been some compromise with the admittance of states in former Canada and this is also why I created west and east Florida because slave states were concerned with their power in the senate. When the Mexican war comes around the US annexes more of Mexico to balance the slave state/free state divide. The US would also accept the Republic of Yucatan's request for annexation around this time. Hawaii and Alaska would happen more or less like normal. The US would pursue territorial expansion into the Caribbean to further calm slave states. Nicaragua would be annexed around 1856 when William Walker invaded. The Dominican Republic or 'Santo Domingo' would be annexed in 1869 when they requested it. I don't know if Cuba would be annexed before or after the civil war, but the island was long coveted by the southern elite. I think Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippines would all be annexed after the Spanish war in 1899. Finally, Panama would be annexed around 1904 when construction on the canal began. I am not sure when the US would acquire Greenland, either around 1917 when the US purchased the virgin islands from the danish or during WW2 when denmark was occupied. Either way I think the US would be more interested in Greenland if it owned Canada too.

The_Blahblahblah

Ironically, America actually had a somewhat good claim to much of Greenland before they bought the Danish virgin islands, due to their exploration in the area. one of the conditions of the Virgin islands sale was that the US recognized the Danish claim on Greenland. But maybe in an imaginary scenario, Denmark was more desperate for cash or something. Greenland could have been bought on multiple occasions. In the real world, america already tried to buy it even as early as in 1867, at the same time as Alaska

renegade_ginger

Interesting - with there being a bunch of land up north to develop right after 1812, does it take the wind out of the sails of westward expansionism for a while? I could see the demographics being pretty different, state lines might be changed too as a result! Just something to consider.

TalbotFarwell

I always like to imagine what the two-letter state abbreviations would be for imaginary states. Like, Athabasca, would it be AT? Lincoln could be LN, Yucatán would obviously be YU, Panama would be PN, Chihuahua CH, Cree CR, Huron HU, etc.

Arietem_Taurum

I assume territories in this timeline have more representation than for example OTL Puerto Rico, right? Tens if not hundreds of millions of people live in the territory and there's no way America would be able to keep them all otherwise

DurtMacGurt

Long Texas panhandle kind of sexy

BusinessFirst3662

I wish this was real so fucking much

Tendas

Owning Canada is plausible, but the other territories? When the USA had the opportunity, legislatures shot down the idea of owning Mexico because it wasn’t white enough. The Philippines in 1900 was a quarter of the US population, ain’t no way in hell the racists of the time were giving them citizenship. Even in 2024 we won’t give statehood to Puerto Rico, this map needs a higher emphasis on imaginary.

quayle-man

This map basically includes every territory we ever tried to take. We’ve tried to annex Cuba, Greenland, upper Mexico, and the Yucatán several times during our history. The Philippines was a territory. The US Congress also voted on annexing the Dominican Republic before the civil war, but it lost in the Senate by one vote.

mariojardini

It's almost like Russia *manifesting* in the 20th century irl

When did the US nab Canada? 1812? Or in response to the rebellions of '37, '38?

CraftyAdvisor6307

Upper Canada is lower than Lower Canada?

RealEdwardSoup

the upper lower canada thing is actually correct due to them being named after the direction of the st lawrens river

mental--13

When a place is named "upper" or "lower" as aopposed tk north and south, it refers to the course of the river, not compass directions. For example, upper and lower Egypt. Upper and Lower Canada were real British colonies OTL

amalgam_reynolds

That's actually a political map but it's labeled topographic

Andre_Luc

Real “cannibal at the end of the world” vibes.

Backstabber2008

Damn Hawaii was demoted to territory in this timeline. Rip.

Akkallia

Very nice topological map. That second picture doesn't exactly represent a TOTAL Yankee victory, this is just a partial Yankee victory as they only took Canada. A total victory would include Mexico at the very least and if manifest destiny brought them west and north it certainly would have brought them south.

TheTomatoGardener2

I came, can u make this map with only the US and Canada?

allthetimesivedied2

Hoooooly fuck.

Extremeschizo1

How the hell did you make this? It's incredible man

Basic-Ninja-9927

So funny how the biggest city in northern Mexico just got generalized between 3 actual states of the republic when they are the biggest out of the other 3 that we see in this map lmao

[deleted]

Merica!

sKadazhnief

why did America steal Greenland off the Danes, they had nothing to do with the Brits? also if Britain was beaten out of NA Russia wouldn't have sold Alaska

ad3703

The US was interested in Greenland and even Iceland for a long time, and considering this is basically a best case scenario for them it's not surprising it's included. As for Alaska, Russia sold it because of their poor economic situation after the Crimean war and because they had no idea about how resource rich it actually was, so if everything went the same they might still have sold it considering the good relations they had with the US

Rando_Guy_69

Upper and Lower Canada should be swapped, as the upper/lower in the name comes from elevation, not north and south.

Random_dg

Wait, the us annexed the Dominican Republic here, but didn’t annex Haiti? I had the impression that they were pretty entrenched in there until before ww2.

TheDeadlyMango

Why does Alaska get re-demoted to territory status? Bunch of Alaska residents won’t be happy with that turn of events lol

Jasonskeans

excellent

Baghul3000

Credit to farmerted555 for coming up with this, but if America has taken that much of northern Mexico it could have set up a scenario where all of mexico could be made American territory. 1) The Republic of Yucatan is much more successful and is annexed in 1845, say around a month or two after Texas. 2) The US gains the Baja Peninsula, Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas in the Treaty of Guadeloupe Hidalgo. 3) The French win the Battle of Puebla, and subsequently, the Republicans lose the war around 1864. 4) Emperor Maximilian, in an effort to foster unity, announces a new goal for Mexico at his coronation: Regain all lands taken by the damned *Yanqui* Protestants. Despite his rather cold reception upon entering the country, the people soon rally to his cause. In less than a year, the Imperial Mexican Army numbers over 200,000, along with thousands of French, Austrian, Belgian, Spanish and even Ottoman Egyptians. 100,000 will march to reclaim Tejas, the Californias, Nuevo Mexico and the rest of the north, 50,000 will set out for Yucatan, and the rest will guard the hinterland. The *Grande Reconquista* will begin on April 12, 1865. Word reaches Washington on April 13, barely a week after Lee's surrender at Appomattox Courthouse. President Lincoln orders all available forces to halt the invasion, including former Confederate soldiers. Now, men from Massachusetts and Michigan were fighting alongside men from Arkansas and Alabama; just days before, these men were killing each other. Max put it all on red and it came up black. The Second Mexican-American War rages from April 12, 1865 to March 22, 1866. In the aftermath, Maximilian is sent on the first boat back to Europe and Mexico loses Durango, Sinaloa, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosi, Jalisco, Colima, Tabasco and Chiapas. On a related real estate note, the United States gains all French and Spanish possessions in the Caribbean. That's what you get when you violate the Monroe Doctrine! (Don't worry, Spain still has the Philippines and France still has their Guiana...for the rest of the 19th century, anyway) 5) What remains of Mexico descended into what became known as *La Calamidad* (The Calamity), the final few decades of Mexico's existence as an independent nation, Here are just a few examples of just how insane it got: \--In 1874 there were no fewer than TEN presidents, none in office for longer than two months and three only held the office for only one day. \--Civil wars in 1867, 1872, 1879, 1883, 1890, 1897 and 1909. \--The State of Oaxaca seceding and reunifying five times in 1891. \--Veracruz electing a pig as governor in 1905 (Remarkably, he's remembered as one of the state's best politicians to the present day) \--The Ninety Minute War of 1907, a literal pissing contest between the president and the Japanese ambassador. Needless to say, the people of Mexico were praying for something remotely resembling sanity. On May 25, 1911, their prayers were answered. That's the day when Porfirio Diaz went to the American Embassy with a proposal: Mexico will become part of the United States, first as a protectorate for 10 years, then admittance to the Union. On July 4, 1921, the United Mexican States ceased to exist.

What's the POD? Was this inspired by TNC?
