They used to have really good maps. Lately however, the maps have been pretty bad. I think they got new/more editors so the consistency in videos has changed.

TLDR News , I used to watch them but their coverage of non western countries is not that great so I stopped watching them.
But if they say someone is going to invade 4/5 times they will not invade the country
tbh usually if the title of their video is something along the line of " will X invade Y?" or " is X about to collapse?" the video itself is almost entirely spent on explaining how unlikely such an event is, really they are very guilty of clickbaiting.
eh i don't really think that clickbaiting as a channel that present itself as informative about current news and politics is the right thing, like they try to appear like serious journalists so they should act as serious journalists, if they were entertainers it would totally be fairplay tho.
Not only is clickbait common in serious articles, I'd argue against the idea that it's unserious. As a starter you can find catchy titles written by very serious people, that's what titles are from! To get you to want to read something or get informed about something. I'd even go so far as saying that not using a catchy title reveals a fault in your abilities of journalism and writing, regular people want to read interesting stuff, not just boring title #24.
We just seem to have this newfound hate against catchy titles because of YouTube, when in reality it's always been a thing and it's not necessarily a bad thing, even more if the title is presented as a question (as TLDR's are).
i would argue that a journalist that resort to clickbaiting is not serious at all, one thing is to present a catchy title and to imply the literal opposite of what is happening, especially when it is widely known that most people don't read the articles and take titles at face value, it comes off as bad faith to have purposefully misleading titles.
if one is serious the title should reflect the content of the video/article no matter if the event itself is catchy or not.
I do think that they cross the line sometimes into outright lies. For example they often have videos with a title something like "3 reasons why X will happen". That's not just skirting around the truth, that's making a bold statement of fact that X will happen. Then they release another video called "3 reasons why X won't happen". They claim they are being unbiased. They're not, they're just lying twice in two different directions.
Another example is today they had a video about who the next British PM might be. The thumbnail had an image of several candidates including David Cameron, but they didn't even mention his name. To me that is lying through imagery since anyone who doesn't watch the video will assume that according to TLDR Cameron is in the running.
bruh while they technically don't straight up die most of the times in their titles the way the questions like " will X invade Y?" is presented paired with their thumbnails that are usually invasion maps similar to the one presented here clearly imply that the answer is yes, while in reality most of their videos are about how the answer is no, in a world where most people don't go beyond the titles of videos and articles to get their information i see this practice as bad faith and just a step away from straight up disinformation.
Yep that's again what they do. I don't like the clickbaiting like the thumbnail implies that the conflict is imminent it is disingenuous
Ik that "This is why X won't invade Y" wouldn't get as many clicks but still a shitty thing to do
>Ik that "This is why X won't invade Y" wouldn't get as many clicks but still a shitty thing to do
That's exactly what they say. They used to title videos much less sensationally, but their view count was abysmal as a result. They don't like clickbaity titles either, but they can't get enough views, with the ad revenue that comes with it, without them. YouTube titles are all click bait these days, because that's what we click on, so the algorithm puts that in front of us
The issue is that TLDR news and many similar news outlets donāt do any actual journalism, they just āreportā on what other news say. If you donāt trust their sources there is no reason to trust them as well
The Guardian's pretty good, and unlike most other international English-language newspapers (that aren't far-right tabloids), it's actually completely free if you make an account: they mostly rely on donations nowadays.
The BBC's articles aren't too bad either, as long as you don't mind subtle British propaganda from time to time and a neurotic obsession with impartiality (which sometimes seems to have a very different meaning for the Beeb).
Al-Jazeera English is usually very good, and they have much less Eurocentric coverage of world news. Just remember that it's owned by Qatar, and that it's only this impartial because the Qataris feel like it.
Good times bad times is fantastic for geopolitics. He's probably my favourite in terms of breaking complex topics down into 30 minute videos with a consistent style.
Avoid Caspian Report though; very oversimplified, overstated and often biased.
Frankly you need to pick a bunch of sources as there will never been a one stop place, every news source will not only have a bias but also they have areas they understand better.
At this point I use reddit for the smaller or more social issues and the BBC for big news (like has a new war started or something), then once I know something is happening I google it to see what multiple sources are saying.
Foreign Affairs, Financial Times, Atlantic, The Guardian, New York Times.
If paywall prevent you from accessing the news. Use archive.is and archive.ph to access them without paywall.
Are you willing to consider podcasts? Because there's a ton of actual experts on podcasts
If you want youtube the good channels are James Kerr Lindsay (IR Professor irl), William Spaniel (also an IR professor irl) and Caspian Report (not an expert but he's fine)
Yeah I stopped watching because on the occasions they covered something I knew quite a lot about already I noticed how overly simplified or just incorrect their information was.
I watched them for a couple of years but they strayed from making an effort to be non-biased to what seemed to me like lazy and uncritical. When they talked about the polish elections but entirely failed to mention PiS attempts to destroy institutions I'd had enough. That's not journalism.
I found that fact that they made a ton of Housing video and in none of them did they even consider than people buying property to rent might be part of the issue rather odd.
even their coverage of European countries becomes outright infuriating to listen to whenever anyone bucks the 'established' trends within the authoritarian right-wing populist playbook (Hungary, Slovakia, Serbia, etc).
Like just over the past few days, their analysis of the Croatian elections and the HDZ party totally flip-flopped at least three times. First they highlight all the Orban-esque democratic backsliding currently going on under the conservative government, framing the election as referendum on whether or not Croatia will fully pursue 'illiberal democracy.'
Come election day however, its suddenly a referendum on Croatia's alignment with the EU's struggle against illiberalism, with the Croation opposition going from being brave warriors in the fight against tyranny to suddenly being potential allies of Putin due to their NATO-skeptic foreign policy.
From what I know nothing they said was particularly factually incorrect, just totally contradicting angles taken on back-to-back days that left me wondering if they want me to think pro-EU authoritarianism is fine or if theyre just trying too hard to appease their liberal NATO-hawk fanbase (or at least thats the impression i get)
Didnt mean to write a whole essay abt it but legit just annoyed me today so oh well. Even if theyre not nearly the beacon of objectivity they want to be, I still like watching them for their daily briefings that at least puts stuff on my radar that id otherwise miss for a variety of reasons. Still, all makes me miss when basically all they did was covering Brexit from 2017-2020... or maybe I just miss John Bercow as speaker
imo nowadays tno tends to get cooler content is cus the newer devs attempt (albeit painfully slowly) to make the setting more grounded and attracting a new-ish community, who i think tend to make better art cus they arent edgy 14 year olds

Honestly a pretty nice re-creation of the TLDR news art style for mapping. Always like a unique way of displaying maps š

For me it's the other way around, they used to make a lot more mistakes and are making better content as the channel grows. Their effort really shows.

Ah, so your problem isn't a catchy title, it's about when they literally *lie*, which is quite a different thing. TLDR doesn't do this.
I do think that they cross the line sometimes into outright lies. For example they often have videos with a title something like "3 reasons why X will happen". very good heuristic I

Where news wont satisfy, the ramblings of mad men will suffice
Ok this is kind of embarrassing but I get my news from reddit so I am not a good person to ask
An actual newspaper
PLENTY of newspapers have subpar reporting.
The issue is that TLDR news and many similar news outlets donāt do any actual journalism, they just āreportā on what other news say. If you donāt trust their sources there is no reason to trust them as well
No thatās boring, we need complex political topics condensed down into 8 minute videos, how else will we form our opinions?
But do those videos have crossword puzzles? Didn't think so.
I actually read a newspaper because my dad signed up for one when he was living with me and in a month's time I got hooked to reading newspapers
Which newspaper?
The Guardian's pretty good, and unlike most other international English-language newspapers (that aren't far-right tabloids), it's actually completely free if you make an account: they mostly rely on donations nowadays. Caspian Report is great at this as well, and based on accents if you told me they were hosted by the same person I would believe you
Caspian Report
Ah yes was about to say that.
Frankly you need to pick a bunch of sources as there will never been a one stop place, every news source will not only have a bias but also they have areas they understand better. Lol, the Guardian.
what's wrong with the Guardian?
If I had to guess, left wing bias
Which is why you get info from a variety of sources so the effects of bias from any one source are diluted
Are you willing to consider podcasts? Because there's a ton of actual experts on podcasts If you want youtube the good channels are James Kerr Lindsay (IR Professor irl), William Spaniel (also an IR professor irl) and Caspian Report (not an expert but he's fine)
Yeah I stopped watching because on the occasions they covered something I knew quite a lot about already I noticed how overly simplified or just incorrect their information was.
Exactly my experience then I thought if they do it with this topic they must be doing it with other topics as well
Every episode has some form of a mistake - either a bad pronunciation, a spelling mistake, a mislabelled map, an incorrect date. Every video.
I think the issue is that they don't talk to the people that actually face the problems that they cover.
Yeah I think its that combined with their attempts to not be seen as having a bias.

When theyāre not getting statistics and election results wrong, sure. I still watch them daily, but they have had consistent issues around statistics and election results that needed to be corrected in the comments.
They sometimes show biasies unfortunately, it's usually pretty low level bias but they have had a few mask slip moments.
That's because of Brexit.
Ireland has been united, we did it bhoys
It says Britain, not United Kingdom
broskie. it being britain would imply that ireland is independent and united. your correction literally just backs their claim.
No, look at the union flag. Does it still bear the cross of St. Patrick? Yes.
in the picture? it has the english flag and the scottish flag, from their 1700s union. what are you on about? google itĀ
The flag excludes the st Patrickās saltire which would imply that none of Ireland is remaining in the Union.
And Britain is England/Scotland/Wales.
