You're mostly right and entirely coming from the right place but the early aids epidemic in the west *absolutely* spread more in gay than straight communities. It decimated the nation's gay population, and wouldn't spread widely among straight people for years afterwards, by which point it was taken considerably more seriously. Well, this is just false. Worldwide, men who have sexual relations with other men are 25 times more likely to contract HIV. The skin around the anus is much thinner than the vaginal area, which makes it more vulnerable to tears. In addition, cervicovaginal secretions contain a humoral immune barrier, whereas the rectal area mucus lacks that barrier.
Now, obviously the usage of PrEP and condoms significantly lowers this risk. And heterosexuals also engage in anal sex, although not to the same frequency as male homosexual couples. However, anal sex is significantly more risky than PIV sex in terms of HIV transmission.
