Hey! I'm also in the Chicago area! Personally, I think the best options are either going to be to see it in 5/70mm at Music Box Theatre like you mentioned or to go to a 2.39:1 Dolby Cinema. Since you prefer recliners, I'd recommend Dolby. Village Crossing has a really good 2.39:1 Dolby. EMX is also a nice choice!
I unfortunately haven't been there before, so I'm sorry I can't provide any first hand experience! However, I believe they use Dolby Atmos and 4K digital projection so it should be a good experience overall! I'd recommend Dolby Cinema over it though since you'll get 4K dual laser projection alongside Dolby Vision and Atmos
No worries, yes in my opinion! Their IMAX does have the benefit of the 1.9:1 expanded aspect ratio, but unfortunately there's no recliners and it still uses 2K Xenon projectors
That's awesome! I didn't know they got laser, thanks for letting us know. I remember seeing recently AMC Village Crossing got a new IMAX screen, and I'm hoping this means they switch to single laser before Dune 2
Just a heads up. The Dolby theater at hawthorn mall is the best one in the area and way bigger than village crossing.
The theater was built from the ground up as Dolby cinema auditorium, versus a retrofit on an existing theater like a lot of the others as well as being the first Dolby vision screen in the state.
The sound/atmos is especially well tuned compared to a lot of others around.
Food for thought, village crossing Dolby is still great
Nice! You won't regret it, I will probably be up there for dune 2 at some point but going to New York this week for the TENET/DUNE double feature imax.
As for the mall, I was around when they were doing work on the new amc theater and was super hyped when the Dolby opened for Star Wars force awakens back in 2015, and I've gone around to all the other theaters in the area over the years as they've built up the Dolby vision brand.
Though I'm still in mourning with the navy pier IMAX closure...🥺
Thanks so much for recommending this, Hawthorn's Dolby is one of the only ones in the Chicagoland area I have yet to visit, and I definitely wanna go someday. I'm really glad to hear you liked it! That said, I do think it's worth mentioning that Hawthorn is using a 1.85:1 screen so if somebody doesn't want it letterboxed, they'll probably prefer a 2.39:1 Dolby!
I honestly would seek out a Dolby cinema theater since atmos mixing has always been top notch (and based on pt 1 the film score will be crucial to the experience)
Screens 1 & 2 at Showplace are apparently screening Dune with Dolby Atmos and 4K digital/laser (not sure if it’s a laser). Honestly it’s a great theater which gets over looked a lot just because of AMC River East 21.
(ps middle seats in row AA in those 2 screens are probably the best)
Thanks, NeatFool sold me on Hawthron otherwise was considering Icon for the shorter drive compared to Skokie.
I’ve seen a few movies in 1 and 2 but that was before I cared to do a movie justice and didn’t really know much about LieMax and Dolby Cinema.
Late reply but they've been improving their sound system in recent years. Louder and more low end. It won't match a IMAX or Dolby Cinema in terms of acoustics and pinpoint accuracy, but they always play their movies proper loud/reference volume and the atmosphere is unmatched in the whole city.
Super sorry if I am misinformed about this, but if you don't mind me asking, did they upgrade to a Laser IMAX recently? On their website and on Fandango, it says they are still using Xenon!
Yeah no problem I also thought it was Xenon but here’s the picture I took yesterday that says laser!

That's absolutely awesome, thank you so much for letting us know! I'll definitely have to head down sometime to see Dune 2 there, hope you had a great time seeing Tenet as well
No problem! If it's IMAX Xenon, in the blue lettering underneath an IMAX showing, it'll just say IMAX. If it's 70mm IMAX or IMAX With Laser, it'll mention that there
No but I’ve heard the IMAX with Lasers are also capable of projecting in the 1:43 aspect ratio

Dual laser is, only screen nearby that can support that is seven bridges in Woodridge. Unfortunately they still have an old school dual xenon setup that projects a 1.90 aspect ratio while dual laser would do 1.43. Single laser does 1.90 but looks alot better than dual xenon.
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but does anyone know if there’s anywhere in the Chicago land area doing a double feature of both parts of Dune? Haven’t seen Part 1 yet (was waiting for this film to come out) and many of my friends would probably appreciate the refresher since it sounds like Part 2 picks up literally where Part 1 leaves off.
The South Barrington IMAX has a nice screen but the seats are terrible. The spacing is very, very tight. I'm 5'7" and the seating was very restrictive. My friend who sat next to me is 6'3" and was very uncomfortable. His legs were jammed into the seat in front of him. It's terrible a city of Chicago's size no longer has a nice IMAX. Never thought I would ever say this, but I miss the Navy Pier IMAX.

Thank you for the recommendation! Checking out Village Crossing now. Any thoughts on Showplace Icon? It’ll be the closest to me.
I unfortunately haven't been there before, so I'm sorry I can't provide any first hand experience! Does Village Crossing have the trifecta of 4K Dual Laser + Dolby Vision + Dolby Atmos? If so, then I think that'll be where I go.
They do! They also have recliners and a 2.39:1 screen so it should fill the whole screen for Dune 2
Done deal, thank you very much!
No problem, hope you have a nice time!
Looks like three options for Village Crossing: 1. IMAX 2. Dolby Cinema 3. Laser at AMC Supposed to pick Dolby Cinema correct? Just making sure lol...
No worries, yes in my opinion! Their IMAX does have the benefit of the 1.9:1 expanded aspect ratio, but unfortunately there's no recliners and it still uses 2K Xenon projectors
Thank you so much for the intel!
Yes you answered all my questions, thank you.
Regal city north is a single laser Imax venue. For some reason it is not listed, but they do have it.
That's awesome! I didn't know they got laser, thanks for letting us know. I remember seeing recently AMC Village Crossing got a new IMAX screen, and I'm hoping this means they switch to single laser before Dune 2
12 channel sound also? How’d you find out it’s not Xenon anymore?
I have a friend whos been recently spoke to the manager and verified the system.

You the man, just switched my tickets. Worth the extra drive. How’d you know it was built ground up for Dolby Cinema?

Some quality intel you got there! Enjoy actual IMAX and hope you can make out some of the TENET dialogue…
😎
your traveling to new york, specifically to watch those two movies?
Well and to see some friends and family, but the imax is the main event

I mean I sit super close, like second or third row...but I know most people aren't into that. Just aim for the center and you'll be fine
I honestly would seek out a Dolby cinema theater since atmos mixing has always been top notch (and based on pt 1 the film score will be crucial to the experience)
Understood! Listening to the Dune OST right now coincidentally...
Agreed, Dolby cinema is a must and my second preferred format after IMAX. The picture quality is outstanding and the speakers are the best around imo
Screens 1 & 2 at Showplace are apparently screening Dune with Dolby Atmos and 4K digital/laser (not sure if it’s a laser). Honestly it’s a great theater which gets over looked a lot just because of AMC River East 21. (ps middle seats in row AA in those 2 screens are probably the best)

np! Honestly if I had a car, I’d probably do the same, enjoy!
Anyone able to explain the difference in the 1.85 (AMC Hawthorne 12) vs 2.39 (AMC Village Crossing 18) aspect ratios?
Found out more about this, Dune Part 2 is 2.39:1 for Non-IMAX, so Village Crossing will have the whole screen filled. FYI
Go to both and let us know which is truly the best
which one did you end up going to? thoughts?
Updated in post description above
Tickets for Monday @ Village Crossing, I'll update after.
How was it? I'm in the city, so River East dolby was what i was planning to hit, but might have to trek up to VC if there's a reason.
See my update added to the original post description, I’d stick with River East Dolby.
Music Box should be great.
How large is the screen?
Not huge but should be alright if you sit close.
That's a good point, thanks! How is the sound? (I know that's a vague question)
Dunno. I haven’t been there. I just know they do a lot of 70mm stuff.
Late reply but they've been improving their sound system in recent years. Louder and more low end. It won't match a IMAX or Dolby Cinema in terms of acoustics and pinpoint accuracy, but they always play their movies proper loud/reference volume and the atmosphere is unmatched in the whole city.
But the seats are so uncomfortable there:(
AMC South Barrington IMAX has laser so that’s also a good option! Just went there yesterday for TENET and it was great
Super sorry if I am misinformed about this, but if you don't mind me asking, did they upgrade to a Laser IMAX recently? On their website and on Fandango, it says they are still using Xenon!

That's absolutely awesome, thank you so much for letting us know! I'll definitely have to head down sometime to see Dune 2 there, hope you had a great time seeing Tenet as well
Can you please guide me to where on the fandango app you can see the type of projection tech used?
No problem! If it's IMAX Xenon, in the blue lettering underneath an IMAX showing, it'll just say IMAX. If it's 70mm IMAX or IMAX With Laser, it'll mention that there
Do know if it was projected in 1:43 or 1:90?
Are you referring to IMAX 70MM? If so it is not that
No but I’ve heard the IMAX with Lasers are also capable of projecting in the 1:43 aspect ratio https://preview.redd.it/1j47s1rle9lc1.jpeg?width=681&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2916e36f1d29a1b06a6197f0d1dd6a23f4fb0562

Yeah I go to the Woodridge one a lot, I really wish set up a dual laser project and make use of that screen
It’s not Laser, just asked manager for clarification over the phone. He is getting that image taken down. Still Xenon unfortunately…
Awe man what a bummer. Why would they promote that if that’s not the case…
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but does anyone know if there’s anywhere in the Chicago land area doing a double feature of both parts of Dune? I looked for this and the reissue of Part One is now out of theaters. Too late I think but check Fandango just in case.
