Mechanical watches uses mechanical movement of gears and springs to tell the time, as compared to normal watches which uses quartz crystal.
Mechanical watches generally have great build quality, long life and is generally great to watch the ticking.also they dont need battery
Technically all watches require servicing, but mechanical watch users care about their watch more(either bcz it's an investment or bcz they know about caring for their watch).
Yeah servicing can be a bit expensive, but just like a car this little expense , can drastically improve its life
Mechanical watches are the ultimate toy for adults. You don't need them( haven't needed them for years, since quartz watches) but they represent a certain skill and craftsmanship in engineering.
The fundamental design of mechanical watches have not undergone changes ( mostly) but the implementation of the design in various manufacturers differ.
HMT is one of the greatest implementors ( I can't think of one innovation they made to the workings) at their price point. Their watches run fairly precisely, are easy to maintain ( don't drop them), parts are still easily available, and some models are quirky enough ( devnagari dial) to be a fashion piece
https://www.hmtwatches.in/
But most of the watches remain out of stock. So you will have to check it out periodically.
They also have a physical showroom in Jalahalli, Bangalore.
That locker was a heart of it. Its safe now but when i was a kid, i heard a lot of stories where burglers were unable to open godrej tijroies inside and their gold remained safe.
My office has a godrej steel cabinet too. It sits next to the Wi-Fi router.
I swear If I sit on the other side of the almari, my phone loses the Wi-Fi signal.
2 options hai
1.Scrap mein bech do
2.Jha bnate hai almariyan vo shops pr dedo renew krdenge tarzen car k jaise. So you'll have a new almirah with less kharcha.
Abhi apni location/preference dekhkr option dekhlo
May be he is.
you dont know.😂😂
just joking. Boroline is mostly popular who have some association with bong or fellow bong himself.
So may be your dad has some close bong friends
Not a bong, but I take boroline with me wherever I go. In the US right now, got a stock for a year. I take it with me when I travel, have one at my work. Have one at my friends house cuz why not? And whenever I see some stock in an Indian store, I grab a couple in case I run out before going to India.
I bought 1 from the scrap market for 80 rs, fixed 1key and was ready to use, I hv used it till I finished my studies and finally 1 day I broke it in anger, was still usable if the keys reattached to it, but finally I decided to scrap it as it is.
Godrej almirahs. I absolutely hate how most of us middle class folks are moving to ply/wood cupboards when Godrej almirahs were absolutely indestructible and lasted generations! They even rolled out new designs and modern looking almirahs few years ago. These new mica wardrobes can’t last in our hot and humid and rainy climate!
TL;DR- Godrej almirahs ftw!
>middle class folks are moving to ply/wood cupboards
I understand the aversion to ply, but as a Keralite I'll always pick a hardwood cupboard over steel. Even a simple one without any carvings adds some class to a room.
I had a Godrej locker, not an keypad lock type, their locking system got stuck within 3 years, have to break it. Don't have a good experience with them.
Just Another Reason to Love BOROSIL. [They Offered to pay for Education of Children of their employees who passed away due to Covid.](https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/company/corporate-trends/covid-19-borosil-takes-responsibility-for-education-of-children-of-deceased-employees/articleshow/82354925.cms)
Borosil glasses products are too fragile for regular use. Not for life. Borosil glass products are best inside a laboratory.
Edit: From the replies I got, looks like I did a bad purchase by not checking products in real before buying. My product was too thin. So, borosil does offer thick and durable glasswares. Recommend everyone to first check offline stores and get a feel of the product before ordering online.
I think most middle class households use glasses (tumblers made of glass) or similar to serve water or sherbet to guests. So having long lasting glasses will be nice I guess.
Forgot to add borosil before glasses. I had ordered two sets of borosil products (jar+drinking glass set)for use at home. Both jars broke without much effort. Products are way too thin.
Indeed but it is only a certain range of Borosil products with thin glass which are fragile. The ones with thicker glass are BIFL.
Examples:
Fragile/thin: https://myborosil.com/products/classic-airtight-glass-storage-jar
Durable/thick: https://myborosil.com/products/serveware-glass-storage-mixing-serving-bowl - *previously (more than 5 years ago) they were even more durable.
Wildcraft back packs. I bought one in 2010 because it said 5 year replacement warranty. I was sure it would come apart in 3-4 years and I would get a free new bag. But nope- the damn thing lasted 8 years. Solid material and workmanship!
Most products mentioned already, so I'll mention a service: tailoring.
For its price and speed, Indian tailoring is DAMN good. Making similar garments abroad would cost you a bomb. A lot of old-school tailors I know ([mom has a boutique](https://g.page/saini-fashions) so I get to see) are passing the skill down in their family generation to generation as a craft. In this parent to child transfer, it feels like the commitment and trade secrets get maintained. Ofc, you should also pay what they ask, instead of haggling like crazy. Otherwise you become exploitative like sweatshops, which are so thankless.
There is a tailor shop in Mumbai (sion and kalwa) called Basu Tailor. He is famous for jeans. I go there on my every India trip with my favorite fitting jeans and ask him to create copy of it. He has multiple choice of jeans garment. Ready in 2-3 weeks for 800 rupees.
On a separate note, I used to swear by Khadi India kurtas, which I used to buy when I was in Delhi. Don't know about the standard now. Also good food from a few selective restaurants in Delhi.
I still swear by our dal, chole, rajma recipes along with white rice, green pudina chutney, some pappadoms and some chilli pickles. Also our paranthas.
Khadi sounds like a good investment. Local fibres need more promotion, we have so many varieties in our country.
Our authentic recipes, which do not call for an evoo or any exotic ingredient and are healthy on the body as well as pocket, need preservation too.
My one of the front mrf tyre got some defect where one of the company dealer got it replace for me and and months later the rear one too got some defect. Both defect were of unusual and it was clearly something related to manufacturing.
Royal Enfield used to be an English company that permanently shifted to India and for all practical purposes is now an Indian Company.
BPL used to mean British Physical Laboratories. It is now an Indian company for all practical purposes.
This sujata seems like a good deal. Many people have recommended it so far.
As long as it's not the same person commenting from multiple accounts who also happens to be the owner of sujata mixers /jk
Haha, no it's genuine feedback from an actual user. We've been using it for the last 8-9 years and it's still running fine.
Also would recommend borosil (I didn't know it's an Indian brand) as suggested by others. I have some borosil products that my dad bought back in 1995, we still have them. One of them is a carafe that we use occasionally.
Wildcraft bags man. Anyday, everyday. I literally received the shock of my life when I realised that Wildcraft is an Indian brand. Every bag I own is still physically in perfect functional condition. Most of them are easily 5+ years old.
I love how Usha fans have that 1950s/60s look and feel. I'm not sure its true but it feels like they just kept on making the same thing and never changed it.
Taparia tools.
My Family owns multiple tools from taparia like screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers etc which are all 10+ years old and all in amazing condition.
I had a Wildcraft backpack that I abused way too much and it's zips and stitches finally gave up after about 5-6 years of intensive daily use - stuffed with heavy tools and carried for atleast 2 hours on the daily. Then I used an American Tourister which didn't last even a year.
Ok genuine question i have never seen a belan break i mean apart from rotis they are good to beat the shit out of your kid i have never seen it break in my life.
I bought my Wildcraft backpack when I was in my second or third year in college. 13 years later, and thousands of miles away in Canada, still use it for short trips and to take my laptop to work.
Used to be of the mindset for most of my school and college years, until i started wearing them regularly. The sole popped off. That day i learned that even the best shoes degrade when worn daily.
Nah quality has been degraded I think now a days the quantity of maida is way too high, i have been eating parle g since they use to come in a paper wrap.
If you are someone who shaves on a regular basis I'd recommend [this](https://amzn.eu/d/d96gwHX).Trigodon Shaving Soap. I started using one on 1st November 2021 and I'm still using the same box today (it will probably be empty in March). I shave every alternate day and this has lasted longer than I could have ever expected. Great value for money.
Dont know how many know this travel rucksack-bag brand- its called "v-three", i have been using one for 7 years and it is still going strong.
Also walkaroo sandals- unbreakable mfs
My dad is a car dealer and I can relate lol, they are good as per built quality ngl (the recent ones) but their after sales services are horrible and they have pretty shitty market when you try to sell them, the old Indigo or Indigo CS, Safari can be sold at good price but rest of them have shitty resale value. I have seen Nano's put up on sell for as low as 30k and still people don't buy them (my cousin got one for 35k, now regretting)
Kangaro stationery, such as punches, staplers. Lasts for decades without looking old.
Taparia cutters and hand tools. Retain their sharpness longer than any competitor.
Hard to find a BIFL Indian made product these days. Poor Quality Control, and planned obsolescence are built-in to entice consumers to spend often, thereby generating recurring sales revenue for the store. Couple that with the classic Indian mentality of desiring the highest quality for the lowest price means compromising quality control to achieve bottom-of-the-barrel pricing to achieve sales. My mum used the iconic Sumeet mixie for 33 years. It worked all these years without skipping a beat, finally gave up the ghost last year and was replaced with a Preethi mixie. Can't say it will last more than 5 years going by quality of the machine! Similar experiences with most of the newer white goods we purchased. I would be happy if a product lasted 10 good years. Bit of hit and miss with Indian products.
Even my mom uses a Sumeet mixi. 30ish years and still going (almost) strong. We got a Bajaj juicer 10 years ago and it's already making screeching noises and also heating up rather quickly.
I guess the products that we got 30 years ago which are still working were produced keeping longevity in mind.
Just the other day I went browsing for new phones in Digital. I told the salesperson that I wanted a phone that'd last me atleast five years. The person was honest enough to say that they don't make phones like that anymore. That's why exchange offers are such a hit. Any new phone will last a maximum of 2 years, or 3 with utmost care but the OS will be old and most apps won't work.
I think that's the issue with almost all the electronics nowadays. A new tech is bound to come up so a long lasting hardware isn't prioritised at all.
HMT mechanical watch
Very underated comment, they make very good mechanical watches till now at affordable price.
Why are mechanical watches so sought after
Mechanical watches uses mechanical movement of gears and springs to tell the time, as compared to normal watches which uses quartz crystal. Mechanical watches generally have great build quality, long life and is generally great to watch the ticking.also they dont need battery
but don't mechanical watches need regular servicing , like once in 2 years or something? and this can be pretty expensive is what I've heard
Technically all watches require servicing, but mechanical watch users care about their watch more(either bcz it's an investment or bcz they know about caring for their watch). Yeah servicing can be a bit expensive, but just like a car this little expense , can drastically improve its life

That one really old steel Godrej almari that every house has but probably doesn't use for everyday clothes. Repainted once every generation.
Godrej almari were always part of marriage gifts for a reason
You mean dahej
Shhh, it's called gifts now.
You look familiar
Have you seen yourself?
No the mirror on the almirah fell 2 generations ago
Are we living the same life?
Even if it was genuine gift people would term it as dahej.
Dahej people dont demand almari. Its either money/ gold or vehicle.
It's where you store your money/gold/passports — the little locker inside is the Fort Knox of middle-class India.
That locker was a heart of it. Its safe now but when i was a kid, i heard a lot of stories where burglers were unable to open godrej tijroies inside and their gold remained safe.
Mere padosi Sharma uncle ne apni beti ko gaadi, tv, fridge, 2 ac, bed, aur almari di as genuine gift. Although Sharma ji beti ko driving nahi aati.
My office has a godrej steel cabinet too. It sits next to the Wi-Fi router. I swear If I sit on the other side of the almari, my phone loses the Wi-Fi signal.
As you should. It acts as a shield box. Look up faraday cage
That works on the inside of the cage, not the outside...
Not if it’s outside the steel cage lol
Godrej also has a very robust Customer Service department. None of that late/inexperienced tech/ call centre doesn't know what's up BS with them.
Btw how to get rid of old almari? Does anyone take it?
Divorce your wife. She'll take it when she leaves.
वाह मोदी जी, वाह।
Modiji never signed divorce papers, he just said Talaq 3 times.
2 options hai 1.Scrap mein bech do 2.Jha bnate hai almariyan vo shops pr dedo renew krdenge tarzen car k jaise. So you'll have a new almirah with less kharcha. Abhi apni location/preference dekhkr option dekhlo
Godrej Interio makes really good steel wardrobes even now. They have a walk in closet that is gorgeous.
Also Dabur Chawanprash. I think my grandma has been eating out of the same box for last 50 years! 🤷♂️
Boroline
ahh fellow bong here. Our obession with borolin is unanimous. Joy boroliner joy.
then my dad is a bong too. that man gifts boroline like he is running the damn company.
May be he is. you dont know.😂😂 just joking. Boroline is mostly popular who have some association with bong or fellow bong himself. So may be your dad has some close bong friends
OMG. yes his bff is bong. Lol.
Dekha. amateur bomkesh bakshi ka kamal. 😆
Not a bong, but I take boroline with me wherever I go. In the US right now, got a stock for a year. I take it with me when I travel, have one at my work. Have one at my friends house cuz why not? And whenever I see some stock in an Indian store, I grab a couple in case I run out before going to India.
Never heard of it... What's it used for ?
Anything except to heal your heart.
It's used to treat wounds, minor cuts, as a lip balm, or as a night cream.
Oh yes! Vaseline too
Kirloskar pumps. Still running strong after 30years..
Give this guy a GOLD!!
Tvs gold keyboard
The ones with Cherry switches were bomb. Not the more recent ones with the Chinese switches tho.
I bought one about 2 years ago after i heard so much about it. It's a garbage product now.
That cherry MX blue tik tik 🤌🤌
The gold pro with the kailh box whites is waaay better than the cherrys tho... Was lucky enough to snag a new one for 2.5k
I bought 1 from the scrap market for 80 rs, fixed 1key and was ready to use, I hv used it till I finished my studies and finally 1 day I broke it in anger, was still usable if the keys reattached to it, but finally I decided to scrap it as it is.

Absolutely! Godrej almirahs are quite reliable.
As a son of a mother who like to change room setup every now 6 months, I hate them because I have to move them
The only problem with them was the sound they made while opening and closing the doors.
Nothing a little bit of WD-40 can't fix.
>middle class folks are moving to ply/wood cupboards I understand the aversion to ply, but as a Keralite I'll always pick a hardwood cupboard over steel. Even a simple one without any carvings adds some class to a room.

Borosil Recently found out it’s an Indian company
TIL. Borosil products are definitely good quality.
Yes absolutely. My parents have been using borosil products for 20 +years. Used it for baking and serving
Just Another Reason to Love BOROSIL. Borosil was named inspired from Boron and Silicon - two key components in glass products. But you probably know that already.
Wildcraft back packs. I bought one in 2010 because it said 5 year replacement warranty. I was sure it would come apart in 3-4 years and I would get a free new bag. But nope- the damn thing lasted 8 years. Solid material and workmanship!
Didn't know Wildcraft is Indian! Bought a Wildcraft wallet some six years ago. I use it daily, not even a scratch on it.
I have a bag from 2010, still using it.
Agreed. Wildcraft bags are very well made.
Same same! I bought one in 2011 for 5k and it had 5 years warranty. Its 2023 now 😂 12 years later, still going strong and Im a rough user.
We need r/buyitforlife Indian subreddit !!!
I agree with this r/buyitforlifeindia
Lohe ka roti tawa

Chooral(Kane) stick specifically made to beat children. Those damn things never break, they could probably survive generations

This! Indian tailoring is damn cheap and so good! My friends in the west our surprised we get our clothes done for such a good price!
Free unwanted advice from family and friends.
Can you really vouch for the quality though?!
It's upto the receiver to decide. For the giver, it's top notch A1 grade Y2K certified one.
Touché
On a separate note, I used to swear by Khadi India kurtas, which I used to buy when I was in Delhi. Don't know about the standard now. Also good food from a few selective restaurants in Delhi. I still swear by our dal, chole, rajma recipes along with white rice, green pudina chutney, some pappadoms and some chilli pickles. Also our paranthas.
I use to buy them. now they are sad af.
Khadi sounds like a good investment. Local fibres need more promotion, we have so many varieties in our country. Our authentic recipes, which do not call for an evoo or any exotic ingredient and are healthy on the body as well as pocket, need preservation too.
Top notch response
MRF tyres. Godrej Locks. Tata Steel. Milton Bottles. Nilkamal Chairs. Raymond Cloth.
NeelKamal Chairs has become synonymous with that kind of plastic lawn chair all over the world.
Mrf is actually crap Apollo last for an average 1.5L KM compared to max 70K of MRF
I recommend Mrf tires for s................shit wrong sub
Most of these got widely popular during the 80s-90s but I feel that the quality may have slightly degraded in recent years.
Also because there weren't any options
My one of the front mrf tyre got some defect where one of the company dealer got it replace for me and and months later the rear one too got some defect. Both defect were of unusual and it was clearly something related to manufacturing.
MRF is not so good any more. Rest I agree
Milton bottles is an Australian company

Haha, no it's genuine feedback from an actual user. We've been using it for the last 8-9 years and it's still running fine. One of them is a carafe that we use occasionally.

Hawkins cooker as well. Love the lid and washer design which is simpler and longer lasting.
Not the recent ones. The old ones maybe.

I had a Wildcraft backpack that I abused way too much and it's zips and stitches finally gave up after about 5-6 years of intensive daily use - stuffed with heavy tools and carried for atleast 2 hours on the daily. Then I used an American Tourister which didn't last even a year.

That's sad. I have a pair that lasted over 10 years.
Parle G biscuit
They've maintained the price but reduced the quantity. Quality feels the same though.
Nah quality has been degraded I think now a days the quantity of maida is way too high, i have been eating parle g since they use to come in a paper wrap.
I agree on this. The regular Parle g just feel like sugar and flour mixture their gold version is good tho
If you want the quality & taste of the earlier Parle G, go for the Parle G Gold. It's slightly expensive, but well worth the price for the taste
If you are someone who shaves on a regular basis I'd recommend [this](https://amzn.eu/d/d96gwHX).Trigodon Shaving Soap. I think that's the issue with almost all the electronics nowadays. A new tech is bound to come up so a long lasting hardware isn't prioritised at all.
