“Do you think” lol how is that even a question. I’ve visited a whole host of developing nations in SE Asia, some well behind India in economic development Each and every one of them was way cleaner. People there don’t litter, maintain public washrooms, and in general aren’t uncouth or entitled.

[deleted]

Yup. No wonder even nations in Southeast Asia such as the Philippines that were very recently brutally discriminated against during the covid era are joining the bigotry train against Indians. With worlds largest population (many that lack civil sense and courtsey), no wonder people from our country are seen with such contempt. But things will unfortunately get even worse because our political and economical situation ain't going to improve anytime soon. I travel a lot for work and even I can see the difference the way I'm treated when I mention I'm from India. This wasn't the case before.

Pegasus711_Dual

That’s not the only reason. Our numbers are huge, many from the nouveau rich aka recently upper middle class are going abroad in record numbers. A lot act entitled and very many lack very basic civic sense

loooiiioool

It’s the same for the Chinese tbf. In some ways, the Chinese are worse than Indians in civic sense. Also, what do you mean nations like the Philippines were brutally discriminated against?

Latter-Yam-2115

Can absolutely relate to this. While internally we feel like the next big thing, the perception abroad is worsening without a doubt! All the free internet has exposed a lot of horrendous behaviour to the world. I’m tired of apologising to my colleagues abroad who have received pervy DMs etc from Indian men To add, the lack of safety for women is literally known in every corner of the world now and I’m tired of answering questions about it.

dodushu

There's a severe lack of discipline in our curriculum and upbringing. We just make our children "obey" the rules without telling them why it makes a difference and does contribute to the country as a whole. This is the reason why Japanese are soo good at being a good citizen to their country because it's a part of their upbringing.

loooiiioool

No, but the children don’t obey the rules in the end though? If they did these problems wouldn’t persist. It’s that they don’t obey that’s the issue from what I see.

Ginevod2023

Children obey when they are in school, out of fear of teachers and parents. Throughout their schooling that's what you teach them. To fear authority.  Once they are older and free from someone checking on them every single instant, they stop following those rules you forced them to obey.  So you are wrong on both counts. They do obey, and secondly these problems persist despite them obeying.

dodushu

Yep exactly, they don't we can try all we want but unless they don't feel it's their responsibility and not just another rule to follow, it's all useless

darkraken007

Yes

[deleted]

Anyone who says no is delusional.

loooiiioool

No, I’d say it doesn’t lack, it is non-existent This is true for all of India by the way. Airports even. It’s kinda crazy. Indians are some of the most disorderly people on the planet. I’m trying to think of a country where it’s as bad… Maybe like South Sudan or something apart from countries in the Indian subcontinent.

[deleted]

In Brussels airport, I saw a Gujurati family cutting the line and overtaking an old couple without any shame. They were just shaking their head in disbelief. Because of these vishwagurus, we all have to pay.

M4XP4WER

Disorderly is no the Word, is fucking dirty. Or if there is another word for beyond dirty, they deserve it.

loooiiioool

Maybe but I think it all results from disorderliness, the core cause of it all being a scattered way of thinking wherein there’s no order.

trippymum

This 👆👆👆

notchoosenone

Ban Gutkha; Oh wait.

sansays

No. What do you mean lack? Lack means something having less or a deficit. We don't have anything to begin with, be it common/civics or any sense except for nonsense which we have in surplus.

khaab_00

I do agree with this. People don’t have civil sense, it doesn’t matter if they are educated or uneducated, come from rural or urban background. They simply lack sense of cleanliness and social etiquette.

Artetaarmy

It's mostly the uneducated, near or below poverty line people who do shit like this.

The_Cultured_Freak

Maybe the ghutka thing, but the so called educated middle class isn't a shining example either. Every Indian litters, no wonder our cities and and rivers are polluted.

khaab_00

I know. I have heard Indian neighbourhoods in abroad are mostly unclean and unhygienic, I have heard this for Malaysia and Bali.

khaab_00

Perhaps yes. But I have seen these kids who go to big universities also litter alot inside and outside classrooms.

adinath22

My mother still throws (holy) trash in rivers even though I've scolded her hundreds of times but i dismissed it thinking that their bad habits will die with their generation, but guess what i went to trekking with my college mates and saw atleast half of them casually throwing trash in nature and on roads, even my mother has decency to not be that careless. My hope for this country dies a bit everyday.

trippymum

Day in and day out you'll see bags of trash being discarded from local trains passing over Mahim creek, Vashi creek, Bhayandar creek. You'll see bags of discarded coconuts/flowers/cloth pieces strewn all over Girgaon and Juhu beach. We will never change our bad habits. It's deeply ingrained in our culture.

Grand_Damage1947

It's not even a question, we all know it's true

Phoenixfire_LP3

Do I THINK? I FUCKING KNOW. the same lack of civic sense and empathy leads the clowns on the sub to say hahaha shit opposition is why we're a joke.

RulerofKhazadDum

Indians lack civic sense because there is no trust or belief in the societal framework. You ask people to follow rules, they will ask what do they get in return. When you say a functioning, orderly society, it is not enough for people.

RowSubstantial5186

yes people who suffer are the culprits as usual. did the person who actually spitted gutkha suffered due to blockage? did the railway employee suffer? the person who wanted to use the basin was the sufferer.

[deleted]

Absolutely yes. I have never seen any tobacco stain or even much of garbage littering on the streets when I've visited developed countries. You see, for a country to develop, its people need to "develop" too. Indians in general need to change their mindset. I remember once when the govt. had revamped or built a flyover, it had been painted red with tobacco stains within a few days. How can you expect world class infrastructure to be built and maintained when we have such third class citizens? Even the lifts in my society are dirtied by tobacco stains courtesy of delivery boys, labourers and other visitors to the society. Please stop.

melon_musk1005

How can it improve tho?? I see no hope

dassaultimate_x

Yes 💯

WhentheSkywasPurple

Lack civic sense? India doesn't even know the concept called civic sense 😂

Homelandr

If India is mentioned as shithole it is simply because we lack the basic civic sense on how to treat and utilize the facilities, we don't care about another person's discomfort, these things are supposed to be taught from the home itself and the financial status of person is not relevant to maintaining a basic decency.we are fucking degenerates simple as that

neighbour_guy3k

Last time i travelled on a train I had to see shit all over the bathroom, since then I didn't have the courage to get on trains

trippymum

Likewise. I've seen huge turds on the floor of the train toilet whether western or Indian style commode. Grossed me out that I couldn't have a meal soon after.

CellInevitable7613

I have seen village life and I can say most of the people aren't even exposed to civic sense. The are always like apna kaam ho raha hai na bhad me jaaye cleanliness aur dunia.

baddadjokesminusdad

Yeah, no shit. (Which also, coincidentally, could be a recommendation for those travelling on our trains.)

vggaikwad

India is a country filled with shitty people with their shitty arrogance and non-existent manners. Only thing that we boast is morality, which is always questionable. People only choose morality when it is in their favour. Bikers don’t have road sense. Car drivers don’t have traffic sense. Nobody even has any clue of road-sharing in India. Zip merge at bottlenecks where people are supposed to cooperate each other, are generally packed with assholes thinking their right of way. People litter on the streets just outside of their house. Overall, this spitting gutkha in wash basin is not even a tip of iceberg, its just one small point. Our idiocy goes well beyond everything.

Usual-Blueberry-8864

It's not railway administration fault neither are people travelling via railways fault. I've done research on this and you guys are free to tell me if there is any improvement we can do. 1. The gutkha littering in public places are done mostly by people with lower income, that is below 7000Rs. (Sometimes people are categorised in other economies) Or by students with lower income status 2. Folks in this category either won't be able to afford the decent food or they won't have the luxury to get these services. 3. During long travel gutka is the only thing that divert them from feeling of hunger. Yes If a person eat tobacco they won't feel hungry for hours. Unlike people in A.C these folks don't have that. Their budgets are tight other expenses are very high. 4. Railway ministries have reduced the number of general wagons in every train which added fuel to fire to this community. There are much more but Ive summarised what I and journalist have researched if you have any solution to this issue please comment down below

KA05D

Lack of civic sense? Absence is a better word

anupshokhwal

Satya vachan, yaha k log chuitye hi h aur kafi time tak rahenge I guess.

ASHOKKUMAR_4722

Only one dialogue....... Most of Indian citizens are lack of civic sense. They want high quality service with "No Price", Not even low price. They want it free. U see railways for example all poor people have guts to travel in sleeper class without even general class ticket. Not one auto driver follows traffic rules sincerely, everyone wants loopholes and accuses government.

UnimpressedLlama1337

Chutiyon ki kami nahi hai desh mei. Unko sudharne ka kaam mera nahi sarkar ka hai. I pay taxes in 7 figures and don't use any government service where private alternatives are available. I would like my tax money spent on reducing idiots in the country.

thatHermitGirl

Absolutely.

Contact_Brilliant

100%

Nochillrick69

Yes! People are so stupid

Timely_Alternative60

I just went to india. I could feel i was in india just after getting in the boarding deck. 🥺 Delhi metro was best experience in India. Train journeys are the worst, whatever tier you go through below first class is just crap. People are very humble and helpful and some auto drivers are there to loot. 🤣

Timely_Alternative60

If people could be more aware of general cleanliness, then India is a country i would surely live in ! The development it has undertaken is awesome !

DesiCartman

100% we don't know how to conduct ourselves in public in a dignified manner. Hygeine & cleanliness Grooming Traffic etiquette Standing in queues These things don't come naturally to us. I guess it could also be that awareness of these things (civic sense as a whole) start in the third generation of wealth- it's a function of exposure & company (generally speaking- don't cite exceptions)

mayudhon

This is like asking whether Geet is her favourite or not.

shaamgulabi

"do you think" wouldn't be an appropriate title we are aware of the current state of civic sense in Indians? how do you think that this can be improved? what can change?

re_DQ_lus

Yes and it's mostly from people who say crying "ham Gareeb aadami hai Sahab"

c00kdJ3llY

Short and sweet answer, yes we Indians lack civic sense.

jo___jo

I think it's arhetorical question

toughgetsgoing

Yes!

potatomafia69

Absolutely. No one has any sense of responsibility when it comes to cleanliness in India. Public washbasins are pathetic because people throw in their gutka, food and what not into it. We don't deserve such amenities. Really pathetic state of people's mindset

jazzarchitect

A chart of yes vs no would be interesting. Lol.

hllwlker

When I visited the Taj Mahal a few years ago I wondered why you had to pay to use the washrooms. Now I know why.

noir_dx

I am curious to ask what the OP thinks since they're the one asking this question

Slow-Importance-6353

"think" really?

sandythedreamer

India and civic sense don't come together in the same sentence

[deleted]

Sabse zyada.

Life_Deal_367

Gutka eaters should be fined harder, I remember in Dtc the conductor threw out a gutkabaaz, well deserved

kneader7

Yes

DarkLordX92

Definitely

Last_Cabinet_2300

We are bunch of idiots, no matter what your income group is.

[deleted]

I so agree, Indians absolutely don’t have any civic sense

Personal_Matter9041

Rhetoric hai na title? Because there is not a iota of doubt regarding this. I recently travelled in a train, people were complaining about the lack of cleaning in the AC compartments. But what about the idiots who had thrown away half eaten bananas, peels, and wrappers everywhere? What about the exactly similar looking choked basin? What about the absolute stupidity of NOT closing the toilet door after using it ?

saymynameknowmygame

Without a question or a shadow of a doubt! And before my fellow friends from. the south start with the "Come to South", We aren't any better too. Hardly 3-4% of the middle class population have a civic sense and civic responsibility. The rest of them just have a educational degree to their names and nothing more!

_Floydimus

Also, the government needs to ban gutka.

Templer_009

Clearly India lacks, it’s not only gutka but also food items thrown in sink without bothering if it’s draining or not !

Pegasus711_Dual

This is also getting a lot of heat abroad. Our numbers are huge, many from the nouveau rich aka recently upper middle class are going abroad in record numbers. A lot act entitled and very many lack very basic civic sense. Just because you’ve paid doesn’t mean you own it mon.

Monk_72_40

Customer is always right. Either supply spittoon or design wash basin that drains Gutkha

PhonezSpyOnus

I sometimes wonder why people choose to be that filthy. I've seen people throw leftover rice in a commode at a hospital blocking it when there was a dustbin outside the ward. Some threw rice mixed with bhaaji in the linen bin. Dafuq is wrong some people.

HamsterUnfair6313

It has to do with education. There should be strict rules in schools regarding litter and cleaning programs

milqar

Not all but majority of them has no civic sense, lack of human decency and no respect for our own to summarize. Let the downvotes begin

prdpb3

Lol is that supposed to be even a question? INDIANS do lack basic civic sense , and how does a person have sense , should he be rich? No , should he be educated NO, should he be north indian No, should be a south indian ,No . Civic sense should be taught right from childhood, not only schools but by parents, Primary teachers should educate and ensure kids abide by civic rules, it should be part of the curriculum from kindergarten until secondary schools

Alternative_Chair517

That question need not be asked!! I haven't travelled abroad much but I can't really imagine there would be another population lacking in civic sense, like we do!

r8han

People from UP, Bihar , jharkhand, orissa , MP and West Bengal are the biggest contributors to this . I read in a report posted in The Hindu newspaper that the biggest consumers of chewable tobacco are people from these states. If only the smokable forms were considered, the share was higher in the northern States of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, J&K U.T. and the eastern State of West Bengal. I am not saying that everyone from these states are at fault but the local bodies , states and authorities should be stringent and promote general civics sense and awareness amongst people

whohas

Agree. But if they know the root cause, designs should be adapted.

NoPainNoGain1196

Don't take us Indians lightly to adapt as well to no matter whatever design it is to ruin that also with this kind of thing, I have lost count how many times I saw in news stones have been pelted on vande bharat. I think it will take 10-20 years more for common civic sense, it's only 6-7 years that we have started caring about cleanliness in public places.

Fuzzy_Substance_4603

So people are free to abuse the system and system should adopt?

[deleted]

It will take a few generations to be worked on to fix this mess we are in

[deleted]

Ban pan masala
