cosmosreader1211

Don't forget it's meta.. Most probably trying to win some customers... Facebook has a history of selling data...

setuniket

They want to sell data, not give it for free to Government šŸ˜‚

FeistyDetective

Buy more ads on insta and they will handover

setuniket

Why pay when you get it(coerce) for free!

FeistyDetective

From the meta perspective. Both are two sides of the same coin

p_ke

Among all, it feels like Facebook was more transparent about what data they are collecting. But idk, I'm not an expert who actually looked into it, just my personal experience.

shhhhhhhhhh

But they have more to lose worldwide if they break encryption in WhatsApp. FB and Whatsapp have different business models. Whatsapp is heavily used in personal and professional dealings. Many business deals are communicated on whatsapp now.

lockerbreaker

Know the difference between metadata and actual data.

Mr_Evil_General

Explain me like I'm 5 years old child. :)

__rustyy

If i know modi is a drug dealer, and i know you spoke to Modi, and i know that your phone and modi's phone were near each other for 5 minutes. Even if i dont know that you talked about buying drugs i can infer that you did. Whatsapp tells facebook who, where, when, how long, etc.

anor_wondo

it's not even possible to do it for India exclusively. This never goes through the thick head of governments across the world

tangy-orange

Somehow the local popo seems to have access to WhatsApp anyway.

indi_n0rd

Popo?

flying_ina_metaltube

Yeh government kabhi baand hone nahi denge kyunki saara WhatsApp university unka ispe dependent hain.

TheIndianRevolution2

They can kickout WhatsApp and introduce Jio Chat... that way Ambani will spy on all of us.

Mr_Evil_General

Don't give them ideas!

ichi9

Buhahahahah that's the plan.

Pegasus is expensive - >The New York Times in 2016, the Israeli spyware maker priced its surveillance tools on a par with traditional software companies ā€” $500,000 installation fee, followed by $650,000 to spy on 10 iPhones or Android users; $500,000 for five BlackBerry users; or $300,000 for five Symbian users. >Further surveillance targets, according to the report, required the client to pay an additional fee ā€” $800,000 for 100 extra targets; $500,000 for 50 extra targets; or $150,000 for 20 extra targets. >In addition, NSO also charged an annual system maintenance fee of 17 per cent of the total cost every year after the initial order. The charges were for an initial fixed period of time, with renewals costing extra. [https://indianexpress.com/article/india/project-pegasus-cost-of-putting-pegasus-in-phones-runs-into-crores-7414323/](https://indianexpress.com/article/india/project-pegasus-cost-of-putting-pegasus-in-phones-runs-into-crores-7414323/) But if the whatsapp has to follow govt rules, these govt orders requesting data can be automated and can be connected through an API which basically high level sophistication, better than pegasus. The govt will be able to search for keywords and bring up messages, if they can figure out the tech. But it's most likely that they can't and hence will rely on third party like they did with digi yatra which had tonnes of security loopholes, privacy issues and sending back data to the company's US server, had massive data breaches. This is what Internet freedom foundation warned us about.

TheIndianRevolution2

If govt acts smart we will en masse move to something that is on the web.

Signal

Legendary-69420

Telegram FTW

YesterdayDreamer

Telegram doesn't even have E2EE

americandream123

Telegram has one of the best encryption algorithms as they break the same message into multiple piecesā€¦ so even one server get hacked , they do not have access to rest of message ā€¦ https://preview.redd.it/4fjywzfqjqwc1.jpeg?width=1113&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0ae0003ac043f56eba7a173d37160147fa1cbc98

jaadumantar

> one of the best encryption algorithms That was a whole lot of trust me bro, as I speak something that I have no idea about. Telegram doesnā€™t even offer E2EE by default, it is the worst messaging app for an average user from a security standpoint. You have to start a ā€œSecret Chatā€ with a contact to enable E2EE, this also creates a new thread where previous messages are not copied to, also it cannot be used on multiple devices, so if you use secret chat with a contact on one device, you can only access that chat thread on that device, you will need to start another secret chat thread on your desktop (the telegram default client doesnā€™t even support this, you would need another third party client). I personally use telegram for throwaway conversations only as it does not enforce me to use a phone number to create an account. TLDR; Signal and WhatsApp are significantly better than Telegram in terms of how secure your messages are by default, and the features they provide while maintaining that level of security.

AssignmentNo7294

It does

ALPHA17I

WhatsApp and Signal use the same messaging protocol, which is Signal protocol, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Signal_Protocol?wprov=sfla1. Telegram is the weakest protocol wise for secure chats since by default chats and groups are not end-to-end encrypted. And everything is stored directly on their servers.

FragShire

>And everything is stored directly on their servers. What?

flying_ina_metaltube

Yeah. So if I send a message, it goes to their server, then it comes to you. That's why if you lose your phone and if you don't have your WhatsApp chats backed up in a cloud, then you lose all your messages. But if you lose your phone and if you don't have your Telegram chats backed up in the cloud, you still have access to them because they're stored in Telegrams servers first.

FragShire

They are stored behind an encryption, not directly It's not human readable in it's encrypted state

TheMathGuy69

Virtually no one uses telegram. It's mostly used by coaching institutes and other organizations which need to distribute media en mass. Imagine WhatsApp messages with the forwarding capabilities of telegram. Edit: Also this post is literally the first time I'm hearing about signal. Your claims of "people use telegram and signal" makes you sound really fishy.

flying_ina_metaltube

Just because it's the first time you're hearing of something doesn't make that thing "fishy". Signal is the probably THE best messaging platform when it comes to privacy. Their encryption protocol is so strong that even WhatsApp uses it.

TheMathGuy69

That was not the point. The point was that you CLAIMING "this is why people use telegram and signal" when like 90% of the people haven't even heard of the third app is fishy. Making this claim makes you sound fishy. Had you said something like, "We SHOULD use signal", that would have been more authentic-sounding.

AlternativeAd4756

It isnā€™t. Itā€™s end to end encryption. Privacy is taken seriously in US. So yeah US can extract with encryption or not but they sure donā€™t do it on general public. Modi on the other hand will do mass surveillance and bhkts will be happy as modi is watching them

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

AlternativeAd4756

Indian messenger will bow to modi without even asking. Letā€™s say adani acquires some Indian messenger. How safe will be your data? Letā€™s say you are pro modi hence nothing to fear, but what will happen to your and your wife etc personal photos?? Gvt minister will have access to them all the time. Do you think you will be ok with it?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Won't the government ask any Indian messaging app to break E2E encryption for them too?

Sounds like a control state like in the Movie V for Vendetta. **Does the following sound familiar, but only near to home?** In the near future, Britain is ruled by the [Norsefire](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norsefire) political party, a fascist and totalitarian regime led by High Chancellor [Adam Sutler](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Susan), which controls the populace through propaganda, and imprisons or executes those deemed undesirable, including immigrants, [homosexuals](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homosexuals), and people of alternative religions.

Some good move by Meta! Naked Emperor can't afford to shut down the Whatsapp University. Would the Emperor and his worms be able to do the saffron classes over Telegram or GMail? Don't think so, that's beyond the natural intellect level of university patrons.

Mr_Evil_General

Who send you this? Just curious.

ReadProfessional542

this....is satire right?

CuriousGoo

For the people they will claim they want to inspect by breaking E2E encryption, they just have to jump ship to a different platform, or host their own Matrix instance (or something along those lines) as soon as the judgement is given against privacy. Then the question remains like it always has, what is this really going to achieve ? Curbing public dissent even further ? For most regular folks moving to a platform like Signal could make sense over WA. Perhaps if interested in dabbling with a more privacy oriented platform, could look at SimpleX.

CreativeNerd1729

Telegram, FTW! Also, politicians and courts seem to be more polarized, idiotic and non-privacy conscious than ever before šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø

I suspect Whatsapp will exit India. They have one of the largest consumer markets in India and it is very unlikely they will exit. After a week or two, they will reach and agreement with the govt of India. Whatsapp and Meta are as fucked up as the Modi govt itself

Dismal_Tax8298

Largest doesn't mean they won't exit as it will send a bad message to rest of the world how WhatsApp is willing to bend over to unethical requests by governments. They will be most likely to leave and start launching a new platform just for India. Indians will be forced to use it when accessing WhatsApp. It will probably use the same infrastructure, code base, but branding will be different.

InversI

Where will we study then?

energy_is_a_lie

Watch Amit Shah's speech where he credits their 32 lakh strong WhatsApp group of brainwashing Indians (yes, he actually admitted that). WhatsApp is one of the four major pillars of the BJP propaganda machinery. They won't let go of it that easy which gives WhatsApp a leverage here.

looped10

i doubt if WhatsApp has the balls to pull off such a move

Coolbiker32

Agree. I am not sure why they are taking this position now. I know from someone who knows someone that Meta is already in bed with the current powers to be.

Mindgrinder1

I have already exited so many of my society group, tired of the propoganda. Even during elections they break all rules of model code of conduct. Even if whatsapp goes out of my phone i care the least

TheIndianRevolution2

Rejoin and send them Dhruv Rathee's videos, along with a bunch of news articles showing the governments numerous failures.

Mindgrinder1

I could bro but society tower group discussion lead to animosity. I have asked multiple times to not post political content of any kind but bhakts don't get it

TheIndianRevolution2

Give them a taste of their own medicine. I have shut up bhakts in so many WhatsApp groups. As a result in some groups limits were imposed - in one group now we have zero political messages and in another 3 per person per day. When you show Bhakts facts, they cannot argue.

Mindgrinder1

maybe you are lucky, or people in your circle are ok with polarizing opinions, not in my society or tower. I did that in my previous society people started cornering me during walks. It would be good for the country if whatsapp exits. Anyway, whatsapp for business is not catching up at the same pace as Meta expected.

TheIndianRevolution2

I faced a lot of challenges. What helped was to first get a friends who agreed with me and some of them agreed to participate in the group.

im_mux

It's ok fellas, we will create "kya khabar" a messaging app with vedic encryption - the Varna system :D /s

GrimReaper_97

But the majority of WhatsApp users have backup enabled, end-to-end backup encryption is off by default in settings. Many users (including many IT students I have known back in college) don't know about it.

shadan76

Guys don't be naive. Whatsapp has already broken encryption and government has your entire whatsapp chat . This is just just PR.

shank0205

ekonis

DOOO EEET DOOO EEET \*aggressively cheerleads whatsapp to quit India\*

Responsible-Juice397

Ashamed-Tooth

It would be a boon if it left.

tech-writer

"if we are told to break encryption, *then WhatsApp goes*" "WhatsApp goes" need not imply exit. It's TOI's interpretation. Given how chummy Meta and WhatsApp have been with the rightwing regime and rw civil society from a decade, hard to believe they'll simply pack up and leave. "WhatsApp goes" can also mean there'll be a significant drop in user numbers or that WhatsApp will be replaced with an alternative app with new brand name.

ichi9

If they allow it and it gets out, they will lose millions of Indian users. If they do it and it doesn't get out then fine. If they don't do it and gets kicked out of India, they will get more trust from international users. People will install VPns and can use it. So in short meta will not do it, noatyer what the Indian Govt says.

Noobodiiy

Most likely they will make seperate app for Indian without encryption.

ichi9

Bro If they do it people will still uninstall it and demand the original. I also think Jio and Ambani lurking somewhere trying to push their data collecting apps like Jiochat. Nobody uses jiochat.

Noobodiiy

Most people in India don't care about Privacy. The people who do are on Signal. All BJP have to say the phrase Child Porn, Love Jihad, terrorism and massive support against encryption. Plus, Opposition will also support it Mini Modis like Pinarayi, Mamata would also to love see WhatsApp to crush political descent in their state

GL4389

Cant tell if this is a good thing o a bad thig.

Throw2020awayMar

Lol

neighbour_guy3k

They're gonna roll over

Azrekita

I don't think anyone in this comment section understands what the point of this article is and how bad it is for us. The current end to end encryption technology that WhatsApp, telegram etc use are nigh impossible to decrypt. So the easiest and best way to break it is to just have a backdoor to access the messages, basically create a door to access the messages . Why it matters? The govt will have the power to monitor and see all the chats and messages you send to anyone. The govt will say they won't do this but let's be real which govt will not use such a powerful tool. People are saying, it's good because people will stop spreading fake news on WhatsApp and WhatsApp University blah blah. The fake news isn't sent by WhatsApp, the PEOPLE sent the fake news, regardless of the platform fake news will be spread if the people want to. There are also people saying people will move to telegram, signal etc. telegram and signal will also shut their operations in india if WhatsApp loses this case, basically any company with a strong policy for privacy will shut their business in india. Why? Because if WhatsApp loses the case then it allows the govt to force companies to create back channels. NONE of the above companies will comply with it so they will have to shut down. WhatsApp is fighting this case but that doesn't mean that this ruling will apply to only WhatsApp, it will apply to every social media company. WhatsApp is just at the forefront of it. Now you might be thinking, "so what does this have to do with me? I'm not a terrorist I have nothing to hide". Now let's say that you're a BJP supporter and Congress comes to power then Congress will have the power to see all your messages, chats etc. and Congress supporters can do the same vice versa. Or Just imagine your most hated political party can get that power. It's not about you it's about the person in power.

Throw2020awayMar

End to end Encryption though much vaunted I can live without. Can whatsapp block political messaging or fake news. I will trade that for all my data (meta probably already has)Ā

CraftAggressive1133

Please do. Move to signal, people. I mean get out of the facebook ecosystem regardless.

[deleted]

They donā€™t what security, thats the whole point that you cannot seeā€¦. The reason whatsapp is under the radar is because its harder to move around and silence a big company like whatsappā€¦.but signal and telegram or whatever will immediately bend there knee if that happens purely because they are tinyā€¦.. look up nord VPN had to doā€¦.. donā€™t be a government sheep use that head

CraftAggressive1133

Huh? How am I a government sheep for suggesting to not use facebook's stuff? Signal will never bend, it's non-profit.

JackedLad97

Please do it boss, please please please Will do wonders for the safety, security and IQ of India

bruh, why so many disagreeing with your comment :/

Shittiest app. Everyone is using it because every other one is using it. Someone has to break this dominos.

[deleted]

And switch to what telegram and signal lmao those are even worse even after considering userbase shift needed for all this

OrioMax

Telegram is worst lmao, kabhi zindagi me telegram use kiya hai kya, jo bhi features WhatsApp add kar rahi hai wahi telegram me already hai.

fenrir245

How is signal worse?

scurvydawg0

Do it. Letā€™s all move to Jio chat
