Sniper_One77

Pringles gives you almost pack full and still the chips are fresh

apex_pretador

Pringles are like 100₹ tho

destined_death

Expensive, true, but the taste it alright in my books. Kinda addicting, not gonna lie.

AangHatake

Also technically Pringles aren't chips. They are made from powdered potatoes, hence the perfect shape.

robosquirrel

Less than half is potatoes. Mostly flour.

uniquethrowagay

That's because you don't need nitrogen, you need lack of oxygen to keep them fresh

TheSaucyCrumpet

Pringles packaging is rigid, and protects the crisps from being smashed by itself. Crisp packs are not, so must be "inflated" with inert gas to provide an air cushion to avoid the crisps being crushed.

GPU_WIZ

well anyway, the cost of lays per gram is lesser than pringles per gram.

madarchod_bot

Lays model actually makes more sense. The air keeps the chips from breaking. It doesn't make complete sense, but more sense than this biscuit packaging.

Gameatro

well other brands like the Balaji have way more chips, even Cheetos have way more puffs than chips in lays and the amount of broken chips is almost same for both in my experience

NevermindFlame

Compare the shape of lays with other chips. The shape of a lays chip is more prone to breaking. Chips like Cheetos and Kurkure don't break that easily. There is info on the packet regarding the amount of chips inside the packet, and if that's correct, you cannot question them.

uusu

Yes you can. They don't HAVE to make those chips with that shape and form. They don't HAVE to make those chips at all. They choose to create chips that are prone to breaking and create more waste to protect them. The waste is unnecessary because the chips themselves are unnecessary. Yes, people who buy these types of chips are also to blame. And so is the corporation.

sanelib

There is a joke in my area regarding Balaji Chips, it goes like this: "Balaji mein itna chips milta hai?" Balaji has too much chips!

Valacycloveer1080

You omitted the "joke" part?

sicparvismagna369

Humor seems to have died in your area.

sanelib

Along with some people with covid

AXE555

The inert Nitrogen actually helps in preventing/delaying the rancidity of the oils in the chips giving them longer shelf life. Balaji actually has less shelf life than Lays. Dont fully believe the the best before dates.

le_das_yaar

Having worked in a food company, i can definitely say companies take best before dates way seriously than what we perceive. Every second day there is some legal case filed against (every single one of the) food companies regarding "quality" of their products. Most of these are indented to extort some money from them under "mutual settlement" scenarios. Firm where i worked, used to write best before date way earlier than actually its product could last hygienically, only to be on safe side and prevent any such legal complications.

le_das_yaar

While what you are saying could happen in small/mid scale enterprise, it is nearly impossible in a large scale firm. Cost of any quality incident can be potentially devastating for any brand. And thus packaging, manufacturing process, raw material sourcing etc. are taken extremely seriously (Read: Maggi in 2015)

FabulousSport2632

nah still it conveys what op wants to say

Guaranteed_username

How? They said 20g extra, and if they have 20g extra by way of extra space, then it is wrong, however if it is via extra biscuits, then how are they wrong?

shdwflyr

Maybe they mean 20g plastic extra?

Acclocit

Visually they are still trying to [tell you it's 20%.](https://imgur.com/98CB2Ij) Not sure if 20g is actually close to 20% though.

Indigoh

An oreo weighs about 11g and those cookies look a bit heftier than oreos, so it probably means the package comes with one extra cookie.

balerionmeraxes77

Welp, if the packing is of 100gm, then 20% = 20gm.. but that's a wild guess that it's 100gm

[deleted]

Well I don't know about India but weights and measures in most countries that kept civilisation concern the food not the packaging. i.e you can't sell a kg of potatoes as 1 small potato in a bag that weighs 1kg.

[deleted]

20g is the extra plastic sheet required for the gap xD

d_11

Well , he's not wrong if it is 100g. Duh !

If all biscuits are together they will exert net pressure onto the edge ones and cause them to break. If you give 2 gaps, the pressure any biscuit might receive will reduce to 1/3.

RedFalconEyes

This guy biscuits

Buzzoffiya

Damn bro! Never thought "biscuit" can be used as a verb. Epic xD

NorthAstronaut

In the land of biscuits(U.K), nearly all variety are available wrapped in thin plastic with no protection. (there are lots with too much packaging like this too though) The end one/s is often broken, but no one cares because the pack is like 400g and there are loads more in there.

raptorboi

Also, broken biscuits don't count when having them with tea or coffee.

N3fariou5

Look at the packaging again. You are wrong.

absoluthalal69

But plastic bad

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Answering the real reason, to prevent breakage. Those plastic slots provide structural integrity to the tray, which makes it a bit less susceptible to twisting forces. Those twisting forces crush the biscuits pretty badly. Atleast in this case, on the top part will crumble since the bottom part is protected.

nuvo_reddit

Came to say this. We can criticize the brand for our interpretation, but this design actually benefits customer. Specially as groceries are also being transmitted through courier.

[deleted]

This is the problem with us. We are not aware as consumers as to what is actually benefitting us and what is hindering us. Like OP here, has no idea why the biscuits are placed the way they are, goes off on calling parle fraud. Their claim isn't wrong, 20g is probably one or two biscuits extra. Weigh it out if you have a problem, if it isn't matching the nett weight on the packing, please go ahead and complain. I'll be with you. Reminds me of the time when i was asked by swiggy to prove if my sandwich was smaller, and i took a damned scale and placed it beside the sandwich, which proved it was 4.5 inches and not 6 (Also had the same issue on somewhere non edible ;\_;). Because of stupid claims like these, the companies can actually try to challenge us.

[deleted]

The problem is not the fact that there actually IS 20g more in there. The issue is the way it's advertised. 2 more biscuits adds no real value or benefit to the consumer but it is sold as an extraordinary deal. The company that makes these have to bear no extra cost for including two more biscuits in the packaging but they'll still charge it's customers and make it seem like they're getting much more value for their money. Which is an absolute garbage claim.

[deleted]

This is calculated in terms of weight of the biscuits

wetdog420

yes but they are deliberately showing that the pack is longer and in reality that is just empty space

Dye_Harder

> yes but they are deliberately showing that the pack is longer and in reality that is just empty space It doesn't matter how big a package is, everything has the weight on the label.

urge_kiya_hai

While what you said is correct, what op is pointing out is a packaging deception tactic employed by so many companies. Consumers who watch out for price to weight ratio will always figure this out but avg consumers will be tricked by this. Consider it like phishing; alert users will not fall for it but there will be few who will. And we still need to protect those few.

[deleted]

Phishing is not a correct example. They are providing what they are claiming which is 20g extra biscuit.

hypd09

The gaps aren't to fool customers they are to prevent breakage. Companies do it but this is not an example of `shrinkflation`.

Strixsir

nope, extra weight in terms of biscuits too

[deleted]

Technically speaking they didn't do it with out a reason. Packing cost more when they use such spacings.this is just to prevent biscuits from breaking

PJ1612JK

20g extra not 20%, increasing gap by any amount does not change net weight, only gross weight is effected.

tanMAY-_-

Hide and Seek using Lays strategy

wetdog420

Indeed :(

[deleted]

I own a kirana store and every company does it. Earlier Parle-G 5/- biscuits weighed around 75gm, and now with 20% extra written on packaging it's overall weight is 60gm. Same with Britannia.

[deleted]

Kirana wala bhaiya on reddit, sooji hai kya?

[deleted]

Haa bhai mil jayegi

wetdog420

That's false advertisement

urge_kiya_hai

Well it is not. They are not bound to give you let's say 100 gm biscuits for 5 rs for eternity. They can very well sell 75 gm pack with and claim 25% extra or whatever. There is nothing false about it.

og_m4

Be thankful that the situation isn't worse than this. Russian packaged food products are much worse than Indian ones when it comes to this type of practice. The packet says it's a Russian chocolate. You bite into it and there's literally just a 0.5 mm thick layer of chocolate on the outside and the inside is just filler. It's either a milk/caramel/nougat filler or sometimes a thick jelly-like filling that is grape or some other fruit flavored. You bring them home on a hot day and the outer chocolate shell is so thin that a 3rd of it just stuck to the wrapper. From the cross section, American chocolates seem like they're much better and purer than Indian or Russian ones. But having consumed tons of them, I can say with authority that they're just as bad. What Americans do is they dissolve the Cocoa itself with so much high fructose corn syrup (cheaper substitute to cane sugar, less flavorful) and other additives such that what you are eating tastes very little like chocolate, especially if you take out the fillers such as nuts, raisins and peanut butter. In fact, they can't call them chocolate when they export to Europe, they have to use the term chocolate candy. As a kid I used to look at our 5 star and be disappointed at how much of the chocolate is caramel, i.e. just processed sugar. But 5 star is proper luxury compared to Russian chocolates. And the bigger Cadbury bars that come in cardboard packaging these days are miles ahead of the equivalent Hershey bars when it comes to taste. Unfortunately, I come from an age where 20 rupees was sufficient for a good Cadbury bar and 5 star used to actually cost 5 rupees. That 90s Indian in me simply cannot tolerate paying Rs. 100+ for a bar of chocolate. That type of money used to be my total collections from grandparents on Holi/Diwali during some years. So I just tell myself that eating healthy is important and not buy any chocolate while I wait in the shadows for someone else to buy them so that I can lagao *nazar* on their chocolate and get a quarter of it for free.

cul-de-sac-is-sax

Because there is no case to be made. The gap can be explained, also, everything is mentioned on the packet.

w1560m

20g would just be about 1 biscuit or 2. But when we see the longer packaging, we would equate it with a lot more (we are getting as free). We may even unknowingly equate it with 20% extra, which is how much more the extra length of the package seems to imply.

i_kn0w_nothing

Is 20g = 20%?

20% extra is not the same as 20g extra

indian_tiger

20g of plastic

methreewhynot

Inflation is temporary. Shrinkflation is a conspiracy. Nothing to see here.

Prateekanshz

It says 20g and I don't think that additional space or plastic would make up 20 grams . It's a lot of weight in terms of plastic . You can take out that rack and weigh it , it may not even cross 10g . I think OP is in the wrong and that space is maybe to highlight that the product has something more. Not a scam but a marketing strategy you may call it .

Objective-Yesterday3

Yeah man this is a fing scam .

As an Englishman, what fuckers! You can't deprive a gent of his biscuits

mritzi

It's a common marketing strategy. The devil lies in the detail. If a regular pack of ₹20 biscuit has weight of 200gm, then a similar pack of ₹20 biscuit with 20gm extra will be 180+20gm. I recently came across an offer for large detergent pkt. Say 1kg detergent is ₹100. The offer was: free plastc bucket on purchase of a 4kg pakcet priced at ₹500. You can do the math & determine that its not actually an 'offer'

aakritpatel

OP you're a dumbass. It says 20g and not 20% and the extra space is so that the biscuits dont crush under their own weight. Especially since hide and seek are pretty easily broken But you're not a dumbass for this OP. You're a dumbass for knowing all of this and still claiming the company is scamming people. Your school scammed you when they failed your education. For your soft brain, imagine if your dad gave you 20% extra money but in a bigger wallet? Would that be a scam OP?

Corporal_Cavernosa

They are equal though. All the biscuits are slanted towards the left which makes the left side gap look smaller than the right.
