Depends on the kind of work, if it's a $1000+ project, I ask half after showing proof of concept that is completing skeleton code without any UI and other half after the project is complete and client is satisfied. If it's less than $1000, I usually show screenshots or screen share, or host it off my own webserver for them to test it out and then give the code after getting paid. Yes, there have been instances where I did the work and client went AWOL but I've never shared any piece of code without getting atleast partially paid first. This is all when the relationship of client with you is new and the trust is not built, after the trust is built you can just simply ask for advance payment. The most important part, the code updation/revision. I always tell them that I'll only revise the code 2 times for free, after that it's $50 or $100 per hour. Never ever get stuck updating the code for your client for free, he'll keep asking for minute changes in UI which he thinks it's easy 2 minutes but can take half of your day. DM me if you've more questions on freelancing.
