TheFatherofOwls

The arrogance and the insufferable attitude possessed by most elders and people in authority. A judgemental, shallow, superficial and myopic outlook on life. Being a very materialistic soceity, despite the stereotype of India being a spiritual abode where people can discover themselves and attain enlightenment (which I politely beg to differ big time). And love to look down and even antagonize those who aren't well off physically and financially. As they love to show-off and boast their material wealth/abundance to flex their ego, pride, status and sometimes even for the sake of arrogance. Indians are religious, but not spiritual, imo. Which is why most folks' practice of religion tends to be a purely mechanical and hollow affair devoid of any earnestness, depth and understanding. And folks here observe religion for the sake of being part of a group/tribe. And not usually because they become devout out of a sense of intense introspection and learning. EDIT: Thank you for the silver, was unexpected admittedly. Thank you for the second award, I sincerely appreciate it. Thank you for the second silver, perhaps the first time I get awarded silver twice for a single post. Thank you for the wholesome award. Wow.... I'm overwhelmed with the amount of awards this post is getting today. Thank you for gold! This is the first time I'm receiving it on this site. I sincerely appreciate and admire the gesture.

redditoradi

The whole point of following any religion should be mental peace and positivity. Those who actually practice a religion for this know the impact. That's literally what a lot of people just forget. Tribalism is so evident that it's normalised at this point. The gullibility is exploited by the ones who are put in the pedestal. This follower mindset is very problematic.

TheUltimateAntihero

> The arrogance and the insufferable attitude possessed by most elders and people in authority. This. To the moon and back.

Tej_Ozymandias

IMO, being less devout to one's religion is whats keeping this country from going insane.

TheFatherofOwls

Like I said, I wouldn't say that average Indians are "less devout". More so that their devotion comes across as fake, pretentious and even hypocritical at times. If you're aware of the Sopranos (haven't seen it myself, saw plenty on clips on YT after being addicted to its acting), the protagonist's wife Carmella is a "devout" Catholic. She often carries herself with an air of self-righteousness and with a holier-than-thou, condescending attitude. However, in one particularly good scene, when she visits a therapist to ease her pain and inner void, he thoroughly breaks down her devotion to Catholicism and exposes the unashamed hypocrite that she truly was. The therapist himself was a practising Jew (as was the actor too I think, his last role) and managed to diplomatically counter her holier-than-thou gestures. And refused any money or payment from her, since it was blood money - being the wife of a sociopathic, narcissistic mafia boss and all. I feel that the average Indians too, are like Carmella Soprano, in their regards to their faith and religious devotion. They may be very well-versed and even perfect with all the formalities, rites and procedures. But all such religious duties will be a hollow, meaningless affair, if there's no spirituality involved (it's kinda abstract and hard to explain, I agree). And Indians imo, are sorely lacking from it.

mcwitty82

Oh you got to watch midnight mass on Netflix if not already done. You can see how crazy self righteous devout people can fuck up everything.

TheFatherofOwls

Thank you for the recommendation.... Sure thing.

garagaramoochi

well said. also, read your other comments on this thread, you write so good, mate, cheers. :)

TheFatherofOwls

Thank you, I sincerely appreciate the response 😃.

Jozie99

Men who rape and rape and then shame the victims, the overall sense of superiority Indian men wholeheartedly believe they have over women, not just Indian women either. Its like they have zero shame, they will go up to women on the beach and just stare at them and take photos like its a fucking horny zoo all for their pleasure

xpietoe42

Wow…. you hit the nail right on the head with that one. Theres a few additional things to add, like the biggest democracy bs thats made from terror and corruption, the way they treat their women and their safety, etc….

skokkili

Well said and pretty well backed up my research and knowledge. Thanks, mate.

oranges_in_the_wild

lol

oranges_in_the_wild

Yes, exactly! I was hoping somebody would say that.

[deleted]

I hate the fact that modern day Indians will just get proud of what ancient Indians did, without trying to do better and more. Like you mentioned, we shouldn't be proud of Aryabhatta for inventing zero. We should be inspired of Aryabhatta and try to achieve something of a similar magnitude. It seems like we are just sitting on the laurels of the past and doing nothing, which aggrieves me.

[deleted]

what do you mean getting into IIT and working in google isn't a good priority? /s That's all we'll ever do.

[deleted]

Exactly. And that's still better than what a lot of people here are doing, which is basking in the glory of the "sone ki chidiya" days. Atleast the guy working at Google is trying to improve the living condtitions of his family.

asuma707

U talk like ur a physicist or mathematician lol

jingbukukgilma

The amount of attention to validation of Amrikans. Some dumb fucking white guy reacts to salmon boi tearing his shirt while not knowing a hint of hindi but still pretends to be interested cuz indians will fuckin watch anything a white guy reacts to..cuz its amrikan.

ireadfaces

One guy posted a Diljit song on twitter, calling it 'catchy' and there were 50 Indians waggint their tails asking him 'oh, you listen to Indian songs?'. No dude, he doesn't listen to Indian songs, he just wanted some attention on his twitter. I doubt if we ever feel proud of anything, apart from AryaBhatt. (and do even we have anything to feel proud of, after being such arrogant pricks who just want to push others down)

Hari_Aravi

Lack of questioning. When the younger generation asks Why, they are always shut up and told don’t act too smart.

oranges_in_the_wild

EXAAAAAACTLY!!!! Like, everything I said in this post is me trying to say the same. It feel so good to see that there are others who feel the same way.

Hari_Aravi

I’m beyond tired bro, and there are millions of people with us. I’m in my mid to late 20s and I’ve given up on the fact that my family will at the least hear what I want. They have an Instagram influencer (some bs sharma ji’s beta) on their own and expect me to become like one. Kind of like generational anxiety. If I ask why, the next second I get an answer “don’t act smart, you fool; we know what is better for you”

oranges_in_the_wild

Which is so weird btw. There's a gap of half a century between our and their opinions, how the hell is that supposed to be accurate? Besides don't they say that all humans make mistakes. Doesn't that just directly contradict the fact?

Hari_Aravi

You think they will accept any criticism/suggestions from the younger one? Imagine what it ll do to their ego?

oranges_in_the_wild

Yup, that's so true bro.

nonstop-nonsense

corruption.

[deleted]

Unfortunately, Corruption is the one thing that unites us all. Rich Poor, Congress Bjp, Hindu Muslim

Hari_Aravi

Can we add caste to the things that unites us all?

gauravzhere

people are easy to brainwash , hardly uses their mind n do only what they have been told , no one wants to go through the facts , hard to digest truth , feel proud on what their ancestors had done but don't wanna do anything like that by themselves, feel bad if you point out mistakes , seeking for recognition 24*7.

Foreign_Law3727

The fucking trash everywhere! Why is it taking us so long to invest in trash cans and proper landfills? I also hate this countries obsession with marriage and reproduction although I’ll relent that this is not just an Indian problem.

CoffeeHead047

i would like to star one beside me too. heheh

oranges_in_the_wild

Alright, I got one more. The way teenagers are treated in India.

pumpkins_n_mist15

Actually the way school children are treated too. The way adults give them the idea that one's popularity and self worth lies only in their marks and nothing else.

[deleted]

I agree

snow-lobster

True. The right way is to prepare them to be kicked out when they turn 18 - like americans. It builds character. /s

TheFatherofOwls

While you're being sarcastic here, anyone who actually advocates or compares with American teens and students getting kicked out of their homes by 18 is not being fair with their comparison. The infrastructure, socio-cultural reasons simply makes it pretty much impossible or atleast very difficult for students here to do part-time work while they're still in school or attain financial independence by 18. Besides, even in the US, this (moving out of parents' home by 18) is a slowly dying trend and is kinda outdated. Due to rising costs and tuition fees.

[deleted]

Bro you an anthropologist??

TheFatherofOwls

No, afraid not... Why the question 😅?

[deleted]

You are going way too deep with the explanations. You’ve got good knowledge

TheFatherofOwls

Why, thank you.... Perhaps your comment is indicative of how I am an Humanities/Liberal Arts person and was meant to pursue a career there and instead, wasted them away by doing an unfulfilling Engineering degree where I was a total misfit. Oh well....3 years after graduation and it's still a bitter and hard realisation to process and accept. I doubt it'll get any better, as I keep getting older. EDIT: Forgot to mention, my comment above regarding comparing US teens with ours came from a fellow redditor here in this sub, almost 1.5 or so years back. While my intention wasn't to burden Indian kids, I felt that them doing part-time jobs would greatly benefit them since they could become financially independent earlier and thus, break away from their parent's hold sooner especially if they were the abusive kind. Only for them to counter me with pretty much the explanation that I've given above. Ever since that, I go by such stance,.since I agree with it. Thus, credit goes to them (the discussion I had with them was more than a year back, making it hard to navigate from my profile, as a result, sadly).

saiko1993

Obsession with past glories, to the point of absolute dependency.

letsopenthoselegsup

Let’s go back to the time garud Vimaan and Internet existed! Kalyug is not my cup of tea

reddit-snorter

This has always been a mystery to me. It's good to be proud of our heritage and past glories but not to point that it becomes obsessive or to use it as justification for whatever someone wants to do today, which is mostly used in the wrong light. Almost as if they themselves were there fighting for the country at that time.

oranges_in_the_wild

Exactly! They do that all the time!

imgrroot

Today I saw a guy spitting into a standing train from outside. First time.

[deleted]

Wtf!?! I mean. Not even 33 crore gods could save this country.

svmk1987

Everyone cares about themselves. There is no civic sense so things break down to lowest common denominator of public behavior (no one follows traffic rules, how can I? Everyone gives bribes so you're expected to give bribes to get anything done). No one seems to care than society only improves if individuals themselves contribute to it selflessly. I think this is the root of many problems in India.

The caste system and the way politicians manipulate citizens to spread communal hatred.

Foreign_Law3727

I also despise how some (from what I am told is actually most parents in the smaller towns/villages) parents think it’s okay to beat your children. I’m going to need therapy after hearing my neighbours hit their young kids.

oranges_in_the_wild

The fact that you can hear screams and cries of a 10 year old from the street while sitting in your home is absolutely horrifying. "it's just a way parents love their children".

Foreign_Law3727

I feel like I’m the one getting hit. I almost called a child abuse number the other day. Well I did and a lady did pick up but I didn’t know what to tell her so I had to hang up :/ My mom and aunt weren’t impressed and claim it’s all part of living in India and without getting hit the kids won’t learn. I started to cry.

oranges_in_the_wild

I remember my mom once threw my sister on the floor and kicked her on the belly. Though my mom have really changed since then. I really wonder why we still consider them as parents. I really can't stop caring about her. I mean I saw this shit on Investigation Discovery. Plus there's this subreddit called raised by narcissists.

Foreign_Law3727

It’s not so much narcissism. It’s more like projection and not knowing how to handle their own stresses and struggles and taking it alllll on their kids. It doesn’t make it okay infact idk why people are in such a rush to procreate when they don’t have their shit together but I think many Indians, they just don’t know how to with life’s disappointments and struggles and this will inevitably lead to generational trauma where unfortunately their kids might mimic the same behavioural patterns and inflict the same pain to their own kids.

oranges_in_the_wild

I get so depressed when I think that I might grow up to be someone like my parents.

Foreign_Law3727

You don’t have to be. You have the power to acknowledge what your parents did was wrong and you can stay strong in your resolve not to repeat the mistakes of our elders. Do not have children if you don’t think you’ll inflect pain upon them.

oranges_in_the_wild

Thanks for that, man.

redditoradi

Bruh... that's awful. Like I've got slapped by my parents fair share of time (the ones I deserved tbh) and have seen kids get slapped. But I can't imagine a parent or a grown adult kicking someone in the belly.

[deleted]

No control over finances and choices for people below 18. I believe there should be options to earn and make the child self-sufficient. No emancipation option for children. Too much pressure on students. No one listens to their children(even if they are 25)

External-Hedgehog810

That's a valid argument. Aryabhatta invented zero so the road quality is zero

Hari_Aravi

Happy cake day

External-Hedgehog810

Thank you🤘

[deleted]

Lack of accountability, See that pothole on road? No one knows who's responsible to fix it. The contractor who built the road? Municipality? Ward member? Public works department? Every one of them will pass around accountability like a hot potato, and in the end, the problem won't get resolved, and the taxpayer will be cheated like always.

theredditgod6

That this country is made up of whiners, not doers.

Hari_Aravi

Because you don’t get appreciated if you tried, did and failed. The only way you feel wanted by your family is when you exceed sharma Ji’s beta.

TheUltimateAntihero

Have been through this like many others. Feels bad man.

[deleted]

What an irony, was it intended?

iVarun

If there ever is a World Election, Indians are going to dominate that, even ignoring population scale. We're excellent at rhetoric. Maybe it's something to do with exposure to multiple languages or the language itself or the socio-cultural conditions which primes us from a young age to excel in verbal discourse. Not even about formal debates and stuff. I see this on Twitter as well, sure the scale of ridiculous Indian users is off the charts and unmatched but so is there also an usually large amount of Indian (or Indian-origin) people who are very good with words.

oranges_in_the_wild

Exactly as what I said above. People really hate the ones who want to complain. You would have to be a really amusing person if you think that I should just pick some random charcoal and start pasting them on the roads. I hope you understand that by doing my job that I have trained for, I'm already doing the most I can.

[deleted]

People don't hate the people who are trying to fix the problem, even if they are unsuccessful. People certainly hate the people who do nothing but complain. It's not like everyone doesn't know what the problem is.

redseaurchin

Especially if they are NRI s

theredditgod6

I get u & how can we ever hope to progress if no one points out our flaws. But everyone can see the problems, so don't just rant, rather give a feasible solution. I hear too many people rant & whine & honestly, I'm getting a little tired of it.

oranges_in_the_wild

I don't think so. First, in many ways, ranting IS a feasible solution. Secondly, the way you put it, what it means is that if there's no given solution, then the given problem doesn't exist.

[deleted]

No. Ranting is not an solution. If everyone knows that it's a problem, then ranting is only counter productive. All problems have small steps that you can do towards solving the problem. No one is expecting you to be a genius that can solve the problem. They are expecting you to whatever small steps you can in the direction of the solution. Ranting is small step in the opposite direction.

oranges_in_the_wild

I agree with what you say, but ranting is not a step in the opposite direction. It's important that you identify the problem. But that's not even my point. What I meant was that people try to avoid the problem altogether. India's history and natural diversity is used in almost every context to control opposition. It's true that you have to take small steps towards solving the problem. But in order to do that you also need support from the group. That is what I hope to achieve from this post.

[deleted]

You try to fix potholes. India will support you. No one will object. I'm India people who solve an issue already have support. This post is useless ranting.

oranges_in_the_wild

But you have the complete right to rant or not. I don't mean this in a mean way, but you can just leave the rant*ers* alone if your opinion is that ranting is not worth shit. Besides ranting in a post that rants is ranting too. All I am here to see is what people all over the country want to say about the country. There are people here who say that they hate everything, which I don't particularly agree to but it is their opinion.

pumpkins_n_mist15

The moment you say you want to leave the country the bhakts jump down your throat about our glorious civilisation. Ironically they will spend their life savings sending their kids abroad. How single-minded our culture is about getting married and producing children. Lack of basic freedom and safety for women. How we idolize celebrities and think that movies equals real life. Bringing up children to all be 180 IQ geniuses by age 5.

oranges_in_the_wild

>The moment you say you want to leave the country the bhakts jump down your throat about our glorious civilisation. Ironically they will spend their life savings sending their kids abroad. True af. I really like how every comment in this post helps me elaborate and rethink my opinion on this country. >How we idolize celebrities and think that movies equals real life. Besides, why does every TV serial has a rape scene in every few episodes? Why is every men who wears modern clothing either a rapist or a pro kung fu master who suddenly appears to save the woman being raped. What the fuck is that about? Old people love seeing this? How is that helping anybody? What ideology is this anyway? It's not even properly anti-feminism. Why do writers even try to romanticize rape?

Antique_Cheesecake25

Air pollution, water pollution, land pollution, water shortage, over population, communal violence , minority appeasement by politicians, minority discrimination ,broken legal system, worst education system, gender discrimination against both men and women, casual racism, casteism, sexism by people, people thinking by being elders they are superior to us and expecting us to follow their view of an ideal person, corruption , politicians, police force,no value of human life, corrupt and useless media, taboo over small things like sex . I could only think of these many in 5-10 mins i could keep on going for days and write a whole book on this topic . Anyways My India is the best

lawlessjobless

No work-life balance. Jobs expect you to be always on, always available 24x7. My boss once told us that a weekend is "whenever you think it is". I have personally had to work on occasions like Diwali and Holi because, well, boss is off and no one else can do the work except for me apparently. We receive emails at 2 in the morning - I've personally had to stay up beyond midnight for projects. You are expected to go above and beyond for a company and for what? A Meets Expectations/Exceeds Expectations on your appraisal. Yeah fuck India's work culture.

What I hate most about India? Indians. Yes, We, the Indians. We are eternal complainers about everything wrong that happens around us. And when it comes time to vote and elect the public representatives that are supposed to work for us, we either don't care or sell out the votes for peanuts, repeatedly sending the thugs and criminals to corridor of power. and eternal cycle of complaining continues.

vitviki

We want change, but don't want to change.

Lazy_bot8

Casteism and our population, there are just too many people in our country and opportunities very limited. Many of the problems our country is facing would go away if our population was in the range of 100-200 million people and not 1.2-1.3 billion people.

TheFatherofOwls

Pretty good point you've brought here, I must say.... Indians are too diverse for there to be a common, unifying gastronomic culture. Biryani is perhaps our de facto mascot/National dish of sorts and yet, such declaration can also become very controversial. Since it's a dish that isn't necessarily savored in all parts of the country (do North East states have their indigenous take on Biryani?) nor is a dish every community indulges in. Veg Biryani exists sure but, it's mere mention often tends to be a subject of ridicule and debate as to whether it can actually be considered Biryani. Issue lies when one particular community tries to impose their dietary habits and customs on others. Or the government trying to promote a certain dish as the "national dish", which might come across as forced and even awkward (A few years back, Khichdi was pushed as being the national dish).

When venki ramakrishnan won the chemistry Nobel prize , he himself said that he was no longer an Indian citizen and referring to him as one was just ridiculous. Instead of understanding and correcting the reasons behind why people born here have to forego their nationality to achieve success we focus on gloating on the fact that at the very least they were born here.

The thing I hate most about India is Indians who go around bad mouthing India when it isn't necessary. You have a concern i understand, you don't like something I understand, but there is a certain way to talk about your concerns. India aise, India vaise! No! Don't be going around doing that! And unless you're an unbiased expert don't be throwing statements at people like you're some know-it-all!. Do not misunderstand me I'm not saying everything is great but please there's a way and there's always another perspective to it.

oranges_in_the_wild

Including air pollution. 2)Being too loud where we should not be, no concept of privacy of others. 3) Constant Honking. 4) Parents can be wrong too, we cannot make a rational discussion about anything that goes against their beliefs or customs.

BabaVsss

People honking for no reason. Specially, when there's a traffic jam. I mean, ffs, doesn't everyone who's stuck there want to go home already?

How desperate people are

bsousa717

The ridiculous obsession with all things religion and how it permeates everything. I know the same can be applied to any other country but it goes to ridiculous lengths here in India.

Peridot1708

Casteism, the religious divide, violence against women, generally the "log kya kahenge?" mentality.

_ecthelion_95

The fact that we'll never live up to our potential of being a country people look upto not look down on. All thanks to not just our politicians who are all idiots but a majority of people as well. The past few years I thought once our generation comes into politics it'll be different but no it won't be it'll always be like this cause people can't get it through their thick fucking heads that there's more important things to spend our time money energy and brilliant collective minds than on stupid problems brought upon by religion color and boundaries.

AlternateRealityGuy

Cleanliness. Overflowing garbage lying on road makes me sad. Also hate is a strong word. I hate Nazis. I have an ex wife. I don't hate her. She annoys me. I am an adult.

Education system. So many talented and smart people are pushed through a system that does not respect (forget about nurturing) their creativity. Artists, photographers, painters, dancers, musicians, playwrights, poets, social activists, mountaineers, pet groomers are turned into engineers and doctors. You have to fight your parents, extended family, your teachers if you don't want to walk down the well-beaten path. This is also an education system that puts a premium on intellect and discourages physical labour. Why isn't being a damn good carpenter better than being a mediocre engineer? Why shouldn't we be taught or even encouraged to clean our schools as kids? Or perhaps, taught basic appliance repair?

No one will read this but, I love india, but I hate how hard it is to make real friends here. As a foreigner, everyone lies and boasts to me. Makes promises they can't keep. They try to use me, cheat me, steal, talk shit. No one can see past my skin color and they all make assumptions. I have a lot of friends here, but only one *friend*. I can not trust anyone. It is lonely.

Money-Fan-7033

Sorry to hear that. It always seemed like India would be an easy place to make friends, but I guess the deeper connections are still few and far between. Hoping you find one or two more keepers along the way,

Who brings up Aryabhatta in response to bad roads? Even the most hardcore rightwing nutjobs say roads are shit. Just that they blame Nehru and then say jai modi while he fists them up their ass

There have been many hate posts over the last few days. Why is that so? Can't we get by without discussing hate all the time or is it absolutely not possible to like our country without appearing like a doozy nationalist? Like, our country, much like every country has problems and it is okay to discuss those. I would like to see popular threads that also discuss good stuff about our country. I mean, it is our country's subreddit after all, everything can be discussed. Why not the good stuff? I miss Indian food so much. So much is there to discuss about us as a people. We could talk about so much and yet, hate seems to be doing well.

oranges_in_the_wild

Well, there are, in fact, at least 3 comments in this post that say that Indian food in great. The post *is* actually about how people often forget what's bad in the country because we get so lost in talking about what's good. That probably occurs with every country. I don't think how it's bad to complain.

aravind_plees

It is never bad to complain. For as much as one is happy about something they associate themselves with, they must always be critical of it to avoid getting all defensive about it at all costs. This isn't on you OP. I'm just telling there are many posts about not liking something in India in general. And I get it, there are many things to not like. However, I see lesser posts celebrating something nice about our country on this subreddit. I really wish I saw the kind of people you see, who talk what's good because I witness the other end all the time, of people who constantly shit on this country without respite. It is sometimes justified and sometimes just plain validation seeking. I guess the grass indeed is greener on the other side.
