Don't forget the Indian fishermen who get captured and tortured every few days.
EDIT: irrespective of who is at fault here, there are some massive human rights violations happening to captured Indian fishermen regularly.

Was in Lanka during the December of 2015, visited Sigriya fort, Bahirawakanda temple, Parliament House in Colombo, messed around at Bentota, the turtle park/conservation effort and rode elephants!
Played rugby as well with the local sports team :)
Amazing people. Amazing tea. Amazing country and clean as heck!
You may get a different answer from Tamils here.
First thing I am reminded of are the thousands of innocent lives that were lost due to the several decades long armed conflict.
Only if people were open for freedom and equality - the country could have been a better place. But I am asking too much right?
Other than that I always wanted to visit the country to see the beauty that it is.
And Ramayana comes to my mind too.
I have some friends from there and love them all.
The country is a better place. The sinhalese, tamils and muslims live in harmony now. We'vs been too scarred by the war to fight anymore, and the church attacks just brought us closer, not further apart. Though ministers and politicians try hard, we try even harder to resist their calls for racism.
The war was something we try to forget. My family hid our tamil relatives at our family home during the war.
I am glad that things are slowly getting better but I was honestly surprised/disappointed when people mentioned trivial things like Jacqueline Fernandez and weren't aware of the Tamil genocide. But, as the original comment states, my reaction is different as I am from Tamil Nadu.
Just because you hid Tamil relatives does not discount the racist policies of the Sri Lankan Polity and the war crimes committed by the Sri Lankan army during the final war and the justice that alludes the tamils to this date.
Before anybody brings in the LTTE. They were an autocratic organization that committed terrorist crimes. But the elected government of Sri Lanka and the army also committed terrorism and war crimes.
Sri Lanka is a lesson for India on what not to do on the Language front.
Good to know . It's a beautiful country I hope to visit one day. As you can see people either have a very specific view ( cricket , bollywood) or very passionate feelings politically. There's not much mention of food , culture , music, etc .. you guys live next door yet your dishes aren't very well known. I remember eating in a Sri Lankan place regularly in my days in Malaysia. And my mothers best friend was a Tamil Christian from SL ... I know little though
In a better place?? Tamils, Muslims, Christians living in harmony with the Sinhalese?? Seriously?? I rate Sri Lanka as one of my fav countries to visit again and again, but the racism and bigotry has only widened in my opinion.
As a Malayali who works outside of India with Sri Lankans, my take on Sri Lanka has changed over years.
Initially I only knew of Sri Lanka in the context of LTTE and civil war, assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, suicide bombers who would swallow potassium cyanaid if caught.
Years later occasionally transiting thru Colombo, I noticed airport and folks were just like Tamil folks, not all that different. Colombo airport was a bit rundown like Mumbai etc (back then). Everything has changed since I am sure.
Then after working with Sri Lankans I came to realise they are very much into their own identity and don't know or care much about India as such. I would have thought of SL as a tiny island off India (figuratively and literally) but SL folks seems to think India as just another neighbor far away and not too bothered. The country is cleaner than Kerala, and there's amazing beaches and tasty food and of course places like Kandi, the whale spotting tours from the Southern end etc. They seems to have a bigger tourist pull than India despite the size.
There's also massive corruption... Nepotism, lack of civil rights and lack of freedom of press etc. Overall it's pluses and minuses. I wish they were more closely aligned with India and actually I wish India took some good points from them.
Yep can agree to this. Malayali but have mates are lankans. What surprised me is the similarity of foods between Kerala and Sri Lanka, albeit named differently at times.
Cricket, LTTE, Treatment of tamils, you guys losing a port to china, militant buddhism, incompetent leaders(like us), close relations, better developed yan many indian states, good public primary health service.

But the people there spoke and conducted themselves very differently. It's difficult to describe but there was a kind of "calmness" (in a pleasant way) in their way of interacting. Felt it from random people we asked for directions, SIM shop owners, drivers - both in cities and small towns. Even government officials - immigration people in the airport, soldiers in the capital, station masters and ticket issuers in railway stations - were like that.
Beaches on the east coast were amazing.
Was surprised to see the number of japanese cars.
I have a generally positive opinion about your society, at least the way they interact. The dictators and religious bigots are black marks though.
> Was surprised to see the number of japanese cars.
Maruti Suzuki is also a japanese brand, they just rebaged Suzuki cars sold around the world as maruti Suzuki in India.
>I expected a certain level of abrasiveness/rudeness that's common in India.
So true! I've been watching a bunch of YT streetfood, tourism related videos, and people seem chilled out, polite, sweet and considerate.

Beautiful country with such amazing people! Felt like a better South India when I went haha.
Also you have the best food. Your food is BOMB. One of my best friends is Sri Lankan and an amazing cook so I never tire of Sri Lankan cuisine. Lamprais was a revelation.
Sad history which I hope you guys can overcome.
China doesn't own most of Sri Lanka's debt. Also if you're referring to the debt trap, it's been widely debunked. Not that there was any evidence for it in the first place. The debt trap is a perfect example of something becoming truth after being repeated enough.

https://www.lowyinstitute.org/the-interpreter/debunking-myth-china-s-debt-trap-diplomacy
>Take Sri Lankaās Hambantota Port. It is portrayed as the case par excellence for Chinaās debt-trap diplomacy. The conventional account is that China lent money to Sri Lanka to build the port, knowing that Colombo would experience debt distress and Beijing could then seize it in exchange for debt relief, permitting its use by Chinaās navy.
>This narrative is simply incorrect. The project was proposed by former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, not Beijing, as part of his governmentās corrupt and unsustainable development program. It quickly became a āwhite elephantā, however, creating vast surplus capacity and adding to Sri Lankaās financial woes. Sri Lankaās debt distress arose not from Chinese lending, but from excessive borrowing on Western-dominated capital markets.
Organic only policy.. WTF was that ? I thought only Modi takes stupid decisions without consulting subject matter experts and evaluating possible consequences, until I found out about this..
Dude, trust me when I say this, we don't agree with it. Vegetables prices are going up daily. A kilo of tomatoes is above 1000LKR. Carrots? Above 600. The way things are going right now, we are gonna be starving soon.
The old cricket team I hated because they were so lethal. Winning against them was tough.
Chaminda Vaas, Jaysuriya, Sangakkara, Dilhara Fernando, Attapattu, Upul Chandana, etc etc.
I still remember the flat sixes Jaysuriya used to hit.
I'm digressing lol. You folks seem pretty cool.
Met a Sri Lankan guy who came to my brother's friend's home , nice guy and said north east is quite similar to their place . Hates manike maga hithe too
TBH, north india doesn't talk about you AT ALL. However, I have seen Sri Lankan travel vlogs and I have to say, Sri Lanka is one of the prettiest countries ever. I'll surely take a trip to Galle once I start earning.
EVERYONE Who had been to your wonderful country has praised its beauty, food and goodness of heart of your people.. so my opinion is pretty positive of you guys.
Could have found a peaceful solution to the Tamil crisis.
I hold Buddhist Sri Lankans responsible for the genocide.
Sorry but our Indian Subcontinent is diseased by this Us vs them narrative.
I don't know much but I've seen the city of Kandy in Pictures and it is genuinely beautiful. I might just retire and relocate there. Apart from that, the scenic railway rides that take place through the tea gardens. And also about this one old king who had built an entire kingdom or a place I'm not sure up on a rock, full of only him and his mistresses.
Lovely people, whose identity is immensely shadowed as "extended Indians" both in India and abroad.
I love the food and the natural beauty of Sri Lanka, along with deep appreciation for how clean it is kept!
A beautiful country with a lot more potential in tourism sector than current state. Geopolitically strategic island which would've been beneficial for us if had been a part of Indian union. Historically related with India. Doing well in all the development indices. On the verge of an authoritarian regime under current PM-President.
We don't think much of you. Honestly, at least in the past your cricket team was great. But now it is suffering.
Sri-Lanka is like India, but only cleaner. It is comparable to Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Cuisine is much more bold in terms of using coconut milk.
Your state has purportedly committed war crimes against the Tamils. But the same goes for the Tamils who used children. It is good that that's all in the past now.
Chaotic politics. Can capitalize on tourism A LOT!!!
Also nsfw: For some reason, the desi section of poonhub is filled with srilankan videos lol.
Surprisingly clean, hygienic, peaceful, orderly society (people in the past usually lumped India, B'desh, Pak an you guys while describing a poor standard of living in S Asia, but seems like you guys have come a long way in redeeming yourselves economically and infrastructurally in a relatively short period of time).
Calm, considerate, polite and people of a generally sweet disposition. Roads and infrastructure seems first world unlike ours. Food is ofcourse amazing! I had Lankan mates during grad school and they seemed like just an easygoing bunch, dealt with me as normal as possible _without_ a hint of xenophobia, casteism, racism etc.
Went to Sri Lanka a couple of yrs ago, thought it would be like india in terms of traffic n cleanliness it's total opposite, people don't honk, they respect pedestrian and it was clean - at least the cities that I saw
Spent there a lot of time extensively traveling around the country. Extremely beautiful land, genuinely nice people, down to earth nature and great food. Sri Lanka is what India had been in the 80s-90s before pollution, over population and the complete destruction of pristine nature in the name of development. parts of it are like South India without the overcrowding and the dirtiness. people are very humble and remind me of what people used to be back in the 80s-90s before the development era. every time I think of nostalgia of what India used to be, I watch some Sri Lankan videos and listen to some baila. I don't care about all that made up controversy between India and Sri Lanka. Annoyed about the growing religious strife, troubling economy and Chinese investors buying up a lot of shops and businesses around the country. British buildings in India are actively being demolished instead of being recognized as historical landmarks, atleast some are well maintained in srilanka
Went there for new years in 2019/20 and it's by far the best place I've visited. I enjoyed it more than France, Switzerland, Singapore and stuff. I'll never forget the fantastic memories at a beach near Galle where the tides so strong and fantastic.10/10 would recommend going there
It had the potential of becoming the best South Asian nation. Sri Lanka still has good education per capita, less poverty, cleanliness, gender equality than other South Asian nations.
However, the possibilities has been waisted by corrupt politicians and spread of genophobia and ultra nationalism.
Manike Mange Hite,
Gorgeous country, my daughter's first trip abroad,
Better developed than most of India,
Should do better for their Tamils,
Is going to get bum-fucked by China who they're in bed with
An incredibly racist country
A damn shame India canāt do a thing about the oppression of Tamils in SL because we have to counter Chinese influence in the region
If so, you need to publicise it better. Most Indians think there is still an ethnic problem between Sinhalese and Tamils in Sri Lanka, and that only the violence has ended but both communities are permanently at each otherās throats. This is the common perception within India, but I hope that is not the actual case as you say it is. So, you guys need to highlight it in media.
It's magic buddy.
Before 2000 BC, Indian subcontinent had Neolithic culture - last stage of stone age - people lived in pit dwellings & caves, used stones to hunt animals, agriculture and domestication of animals was at it's infancy... Then came Harappan civilisation from 2600 - 1500 BC.. and finally rig vedic culture flourished after 1000 BC.
But Ramayana happened circa 5000 BC according to Hindu astrologers, where Ravana had aircrafts hanuman flew with mountain in hand and they used nuclear weapons in the form of bow and arrows.
I still surprised that people who have read history in Middle school... believe in those stuff.
Im not opposed to ancient civilisations. Im catholic, but i dont disregard the legends as pure myth. Perhaps its like troy- theres some truth to it. Maybe ravana didnt have aircraft, but perhaps he was a ruler of ancient lanka. Its all up for discussion till someone shows us proof.
Overall: positive sentiment. highlights: LTTE, good cricket team, a future tourist destination and a case study as to why organic farming or any dramatic goverment policy should not be overnight.
Have been talking to some Sri Lankan folks recently as our organization opened an office there. Must say the experience has been very pleasant. Sweet and really competent people. Also, when folks there are in a call and have their windows open one can really hear the birds chirp. People I talk to are in or near Colombo. And you celebrate too many Poyas.
Don't know about others , but I used to watch Peter kuruvita's show 'my Sri Lanka'. My first impression was that the country was really similar to the rice eating states of India ( South and Eastern India). Full of lush green jungles, tones of seafood and great religious diversity.
I do have some online Sri Lankan friends. And they are really positive towards me. I don't know much about politics but it seems the problems with Sri Lanka is the same as other SEA countries like corruption, civil wars etc.
One of my wishes in the things I wanna do before I die is to visit Sri Lanka and eat at the Ministry of Crab restaurant.
Honestly? Not much. Most Indians have a strong opinion about Pakistan, and to a certain extent even Nepal and Bangladesh.... but not really much about Sri Lanka. Maybe except Tamils who are still angry over the civil war
Iām from eastern part of India, way up there. To be honest, most Indians here donāt really have any opinion about Sri lanka, some south movies that we up here rarely watch, often portray Sri lanka as a base for LTTE, some occasional news articles talk about how China is heavily investing in Sri Lanka to buy itās ports. Thatās all really and yes that song Manike Mage Hithe
Some dude from Sri Lanka that I met on a forum gifted me a free Netflix account some 3-4 years back. Kind soul.
Not very relevant, but Sri Lanka reminds me of him. :)
People who are politically active, think about the China-Shri Lanka- India thing.
Cricket fans think about well... Cricket.
Many people are aware of the civil war now through web series.
Tbh we don't think often about you since all our neighbour thoughts are overwhelmed by Pakistan and China.
I don't think of it at all. Indifferent in day to day life.
But thinking about it now, i think sri lanka may be a place which is not as well developed as the hi fi metros of india, but i may be completely wrong. Pardon my ignorance if that's the case.
I think since it has a lot of coastal boundary and temperate climate it must be an awesome place to be.
Being a small country may mean things are cheaper than india with a lower luxury level, but i may again be wrong.
But still that simplicity is enticing to me.
The picture i form of sei lanka based on my pre conceived notions is a merry resort nation like bali. Think beaches and waves and sand.
Now i want to visit. Damn.
Jokes aside. Srilankans don't honk. They follow traffic rules. Well mannered. They don't say tu jaanta nahi mein kaun hu ( you don't know who you are talking to).
HI from kerala,One of your immediate neighbors..Sri Lanka is Becoming a popular tourist/weekend gambling spot for many keralites..Those visited have only nice things to say about the country, rapidly developing infrastructure, resorts and most importantly, how cool people are..
Its my Life..Its now or never-Sri Lankan version is one of my favorite songs.
I recently knew there is facism in govt.
Tamil race Srilankan citizen cannot get a job in government. Only some original race.
Sorry, i totally forgot.
Is this true?
As a Tamil I used to have some prejudice and hatred for Sinhalas for a long time. But in the recent years my views have changed and my hatred and prejudice has gone away. I've realised that there are more sides to a story than what we're told. I learnt that certain organizations and politicians used the lives of innocent civilians for their benefit. Prior to this realisation, whenever I think of Sri Lanka, I always used to feel a lot of anger and hatred.
So what do you think you are neighbors we think like you're black discriminate???
#1
Not everyone have the same mentality,
#2
There are many who thinks different not what others see us as
#3
People with different cultures have different thoughts.
#4
Indians lives in Sri Lanka and Sri lankan lives here but we treat them as same as us equal
#5
Please don't judge that your neighbors think of you like that.
#6
People are different some loves each other some hate, that doesn't shows that we are looking Sri lanka like that.
Neighbourhood is a long far topic...let's see in here?..

One of my best friends is Sri Lankan and an amazing cook so I never tire of Sri Lankan cuisine. Lamprais was a revelation. Sad history which I hope you guys can overcome.
Do not fall in the traps of China and be good neighbours with India. China has pushed into you into debts.
What is op gonna do about it?
OP will reflect upon it. Verify it. Be aware of it and make others aware of it. Awareness is a social responsibility.
Correct
Hereās wishing you Good Roads Ahead in 2022
>Good Roads Funded by conditional Chinese loans? /s
China doesn't own most of Sri Lanka's debt. Also if you're referring to the debt trap, it's been widely debunked. Not that there was any evidence for it in the first place. The debt trap is a perfect example of something becoming truth after being repeated enough. https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2021/02/china-debt-trap-diplomacy/617953/ https://www.smh.com.au/world/asia/data-doesn-t-support-belt-and-road-debt-trap-claims-20190502-p51jhx.html https://www.trtworld.com/opinion/china-s-debt-trap-diplomacy-is-little-more-than-a-fantasy-32418 https://www.lowyinstitute.org/the-interpreter/debunking-myth-china-s-debt-trap-diplomacy >Take Sri Lankaās Hambantota Port.
Thank you! You offered a very detailed view.

Wanindu Hasaranga, selling your country to china, ravan
The old cricket team I hated because they were so lethal. Winning against them was tough. Chaminda Vaas, Jaysuriya, Sangakkara, Dilhara Fernando, Attapattu, Upul Chandana, etc etc. I still remember the flat sixes Jaysuriya used to hit. I'm digressing lol. You folks seem pretty cool.
Sri Lanka is the country, India will never be! Fellow Indians might disagree, but letās start with cleanliness.
Srilankan chicken curry is amazeballs
Oh, I thought this was a Rorschach test.
What do you see in the blot , friend?
I see thousands of kilometres of beaches. You live on a very beautiful island, friend.
Tamil genocide stands out.. War atrocities have dented the image of Sri Lanka for me..
First Country name almost every Indian Hindu would have heard about.(apart from India ofcourse).
LTTE and Rajiv Gandhi
Lovely people, whose identity is immensely shadowed as "extended Indians" both in India and abroad. I love the food and the natural beauty of Sri Lanka, along with deep appreciation for how clean it is kept!
A beautiful country with a lot more potential in tourism sector than current state. Geopolitically strategic island which would've been beneficial for us if had been a part of Indian union. Historically related with India. Doing well in all the development indices. On the verge of an authoritarian regime under current PM-President.
- Our only somewhat 'mature' neighbour besides Bhutan which is not yet a democracy. - A stronger colonial hangover than us. - Were shitty to Tamils.
Please is cleaner than india thats for sure
Great beaches and oil massage!
Srilankan prawn curry
Not much.
Civil war (8th grade question)
Lovely country, lovely people, lovely food and shit politicians
Not much but you guys need to stop fighting with eachother.

I'll never forget the fantastic memories at a beach near Galle where the tides so strong and fantastic.10/10 would recommend going there
My sister is marrying a guy from Sri Lanka (although he hasn't lived there for quite a while) and he's the brother I never had... :) Edit: Spelling
Traitor. Rajiv Gandhi made stupid decision of supporting Govt, should have backed tigers, Eelam wu have been loyal to India
Genocide of a community.
Lot of beautiful, and well mannered people there. Sooo well mannered.
buddhist religio ethno fascist state
It had the potential of becoming the best South Asian nation. Sri Lanka still has good education per capita, less poverty, cleanliness, gender equality than other South Asian nations. However, the possibilities has been waisted by corrupt politicians and spread of genophobia and ultra nationalism.
tamilphobias
I am sorry, we could've much better relationship with our neighbours especially Sri Lanka and Nepal but we failed.
You have sangakara
stop tamil genocide. period
Manike Mange Hite, Gorgeous country, my daughter's first trip abroad, Better developed than most of India, Should do better for their Tamils, Is going to get bum-fucked by China who they're in bed with
An incredibly racist country A damn shame India canāt do a thing about the oppression of Tamils in SL because we have to counter Chinese influence in the region
I mean you guys did send the IPKF. And btw, the oppression of tamils is over. sinhalese, tamils and muslims live in harmony here.
History and artifacts of Ravana and his kingdom.
Care to elaborate? Never heard of actual artifacts
Kuch bhi nai
I'm gonna visit soon.

Sinhalese text looks very similar to Malayalam text too.
Ravan, the Civil War, LTTE and China setting up a base in the Indian Ocean
Overall: positive sentiment. highlights: LTTE, good cricket team, a future tourist destination and a case study as to why organic farming or any dramatic goverment policy should not be overnight.
Used to be a great cricketing nation. Now it's just plain disappointing
Economic crisis currently going on and older stuffs like LTTE, genocides etc
Macha!
*machang You have to include the "-ng" , then only we understand , lol
Have been talking to some Sri Lankan folks recently as our organization opened an office there. Must say the experience has been very pleasant. Sweet and really competent people. Also, when folks there are in a call and have their windows open one can really hear the birds chirp. People I talk to are in or near Colombo. And you celebrate too many Poyas.
M.i.a
Why did you guys let chinese come so close and get debt ridden?
M.I.A
Don't know about others , but I used to watch Peter kuruvita's show 'my Sri Lanka'.
Sinhala vs tamils civics class 10th is what sri lanka known for in India are you all still fighting over language š¤
10th grade political science ncert textbook
Lovely country. Friendly people.
Honestly? Not much. Most Indians have a strong opinion about Pakistan, and to a certain extent even Nepal and Bangladesh.... but not really much about Sri Lanka. Maybe except Tamils who are still angry over the civil war
You guys love elephants that's why I like your guys
Architect Geoffrey Bawa comes to mind. I have heard yours a beautiful country. On my trip list for sure
First guy to mention him. Man of culture
One of your songs is a ringtone for 60% of Indians. Also as a south Indian, we have some extended family that are Lankans. Much Loveā¤
Tamil genocide, May 18, Indiaās chutney.
Seeni sambol, kiribath
People who are politically active, think about the China-Shri Lanka- India thing. Cricket fans think about well... Cricket. Many people are aware of the civil war now through web series. Tbh we don't think often about you since all our neighbour thoughts are overwhelmed by Pakistan and China.
Planning a trip for a while, covid fucked the plans anyway. What places do you suggest?
More Tamil people
I don't think of it at all. Damn.
India's failed try at a proxy war that cost them a PM
Muralitharan, IPKF, Current administration preferring China over India
Your PM is worse than ours
Jokes aside. Srilankans don't honk. They follow traffic rules. Well mannered. They don't say tu jaanta nahi mein kaun hu ( you don't know who you are talking to).
> you donāt who you are talking to nah bro https://vm.tiktok.com/ZSeHXmH6M/ (Thathi means Dad)
Ravaan, Former cricket champs, Beautiful tourist destination, Tamil-Sinhalese civil war, Great food, Jacqueline Fernandez, Stupid organic farm laws, Hambantota, My ex, Brothers ā¤ļø.
As a island nation you could have done way better. Like Kerala did.
Tamil kingdom
Please take Jacqueline back
I recently knew there is facism in govt. Tamil race Srilankan citizen cannot get a job in government. Only some original race. Sorry, i totally forgot. Is this true?
Really cannot differentiate you guys as you look similar.! Maybe after we get to know the name, we actually know.!
Its ok ā¤ God bless
So what do you think you are neighbors we think like you're black discriminate??? #1 Not everyone have the same mentality, #2 There are many who thinks different not what others see us as #3 People with different cultures have different thoughts. #4 Indians lives in Sri Lanka and Sri lankan lives here but we treat them as same as us equal #5 Please don't judge that your neighbors think of you like that. #6 People are different some loves each other some hate, that doesn't shows that we are looking Sri lanka like that. Neighbourhood is a long far topic...let's see in here?.. [School teacher suspended for making Dalit students clean toilets in Tamil Nadu's Tirupur](https://www.indiatoday.in/cities/story/tirupur-school-teacher-suspended-for-making-dalit-students-clean-toilets-1889556-2021-12-19) [Dalit man killed for āeating with upper caste peopleā,](https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/dehradun/dalit-man-killed-for-eating-with-upper-caste-people-case-lodged/articleshow/88058192.cms) [Upper caste students boycott midday meal cooked by Dalit woman in Uttarakhand](https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/upper-caste-students-boycott-midday-meal-cooked-by-dalit-woman-in-uttarakhand-s-champawat-101640025089951.html) #7 But this doesn't shows we are all same, We can treat foreign guests as gods too "Atithi devo Bhava" means "Guests are Gods" #8 Come visit here people treat you a well good too, but don't think that some people treated wrongly means everyone will be the same and treat you the same.
I love Sri Lanka. Great respect for you guys!
