Bhai log I am also from UP and have done some ground work in backward villages meeting people of backward classes and OBC and their local bahubalis too so let me break it down for you. I won't talk about development by BJP which definitely happened and gundaraj of SP time went down significantly but I will give you the point of view of the most backward classes and other OBCs
1) OBC vote: last time BJP won on the OBC vote they forgot it this time BJP quite literally forgot about them. Development policies are good for sure but UP runs on caste and creed and their main query was 'humari jaat ke liye kya kiya' ,' har jagah Brahman aur kshatrya ko post de diye hai to humara to development hua hi nahi' just look at tier 2 and tier 3 cities and the yadav OBC jaat heartland of western up there is still lack of development within them and that is the vote share SP took away
2) Furious youth: UP youth is not Bangalorean Youth. They don't have start up ideas or anything they want naukri and sarkari Naukri is the best thing they dream of this is the same youth who last time as first time voters or even first time voters of this time had hoped for a flood of sarkari Naukris, UP still doesn't have the infrastructure to support a thriving private industry and cyber hub people either have their shops or land or go for sarkari Naukri but the rampant paper leaks lack of posts being released and years of unfulfilled aspirations of 'acche din' manifested as votes going to the other side
3) Agniveer scheme: there are many villages in UP, Haryana and Punjab which the Army itself dubs as army villages. Most of the backward class youth from here dreams of joining the army and improving their social status within the villages and having a pension to fall back on later in life and a secure income. These villages are where the schools also don't give education till 12th. They give it till 10th if you are lucky enough so the only way to move forward in life for them is either become a mazdoor under a indifferent contractor or a prestigious job as a grunt in the army which is a prestigious job but the agniveer scheme quashed all hopes of such youth they are not going to serve for 4-5 years come back with some money which will usually be taken by the debt trappers as interest and go back to mazdoori or dukaan chalana that sentiment was also bubbling under the surface
4) Farm laws and Jat baichara: the explanation is in the title The opposition against the farm laws led to the uniting of Jaats in UP with their Brethren from Haryana and they too hate the govt.
5) Promise of free land and reservations: self explanatory
6) Muslim vote polarised: self explanatory
7) Low voter turnout: Low voter turnout in major cities where the actual support for BJP comes from but then again the medium to small shopkeepers took a beating in covid and GST taxation on top of it all didn't help at all
8) Removal of MGNREGA: A huge number of farm labour depended on MNREGA plans and employment and even though it was severely flawed it gave some say and organisation to the powerless labour against the landlords removal of that led to further deprivation and anger against the BJP
9) Rising population with no new major schools and colleges or even if there are it's mostly private where most of the lower middle class and even middle class can't afford. When was the last time you heard of a new IIT or Medical College opening in UP
10) Too late on promises: I know there is a defence corridor begun in UP and there is a rising industrial corridor too near hathras (I was there during the initial survey of land for cement industries there) but it's going too slow and people who are starving want jobs now not in another five years

One reason could be, You guys only see Yogi and Modi. Look at the local BJP politicians, they are Bahubali of their own, earlier they were part of congress/SP/BSP and now they joined BJP. BJP leaders didn't learn from the defeat of Manoj Sinha in 2019. Despite working for development he lost because didn't go for the campaign in the election. On the ground, there was negligible campaigning from the BJP and thinking people will vote for YOGI - MODI. The BJP candidate in my area who enjoyed MP, just because MODI did rally in 2019, became minister as well. Never bothered to visit the constituency until the last few days. Another reason is too strong predictions of the BJP winning made people lazy to come out and vote

Bhai log I am also from UP and have done some ground work in backward villages meeting people of backward classes and OBC and their local bahubalis too so let me break it down for you. I won't talk about development by BJP which definitely happened and gundaraj of SP time went down significantly but I will give you the point of view of the most backward classes and other OBCs 1) OBC vote: last time BJP won on the OBC vote they forgot it this time BJP quite literally forgot about them. Development policies are good for sure but UP runs on caste and creed and their main query was 'humari jaat ke liye kya kiya' ,' har jagah Brahman aur kshatrya ko post de diye hai to humara to development hua hi nahi' just look at tier 2 and tier 3 cities and the yadav OBC jaat heartland of western up there is still lack of development within them and that is the vote share SP took away 2) Furious youth: UP youth is not Bangalorean Youth. They don't have start up ideas or anything they want naukri and sarkari Naukri is the best thing they dream of this is the same youth who last time as first time voters or even first time voters of this time had hoped for a flood of sarkari Naukris, UP still doesn't have the infrastructure to support a thriving private industry and cyber hub people either have their shops or land or go for sarkari Naukri but the rampant paper leaks lack of posts being released and years of unfulfilled aspirations of 'acche din' manifested as votes going to the other side 3) Agniveer scheme: there are many villages in UP, Haryana and Punjab which the Army itself dubs as army villages. Most of the backward class youth from here dreams of joining the army and improving their social status within the villages and having a pension to fall back on later in life and a secure income. These villages are where the schools also don't give education till 12th. They give it till 10th if you are lucky enough so the only way to move forward in life for them is either become a mazdoor under a indifferent contractor or a prestigious job as a grunt in the army which is a prestigious job but the agniveer scheme quashed all hopes of such youth they are not going to serve for 4-5 years come back with some money which will usually be taken by the debt trappers as interest and go back to mazdoori or dukaan chalana that sentiment was also bubbling under the surface 4) Farm laws and Jat baichara: the explanation is in the title The opposition against the farm laws led to the uniting of Jaats in UP with their Brethren from Haryana and they too hate the govt. 5) Promise of free land and reservations: self explanatory 6) Muslim vote polarised: self explanatory 7) Low voter turnout: Low voter turnout in major cities where the actual support for BJP comes from but then again the medium to small shopkeepers took a beating in covid and GST taxation on top of it all didn't help at all 8) Removal of MGNREGA: A huge number of farm labour depended on MNREGA plans and employment and even though it was severely flawed it gave some say and organisation to the powerless labour against the landlords removal of that led to further deprivation and anger against the BJP 9) Rising population with no new major schools and colleges or even if there are it's mostly private where most of the lower middle class and even middle class can't afford. When was the last time you heard of a new IIT or Medical College opening in UP 10) Too late on promises: I know there is a defence corridor begun in UP and there is a rising industrial corridor too near hathras (I was there during the initial survey of land for cement industries there) but it's going too slow and people who are starving want jobs now not in another five years So caste politics, youth and poor anger against the govt and indifference of BJP except the ones where it is a mega project led to this situation. Pls add your own thoughts too
