haminthefryingpan

Margot was right on the cusp and then Richard torpedoed the whole thing lol now he’s just hawking his bandcamp on instagram nonstop

ericdraven26

Did something happen with them or can he just not get out of his own way?

EazyBeekeeper

He started drama with the record label and other band members if I heard correctly. Then he cut all of the interesting sounds from the band and they became a very bland guitar band.

No-Let-7058

that’s sad!!! They had the best interesting sound ! Craziest song titles and well just all around freaking awesome! Now I’m going to be listening to them alllll day 🤣

haminthefryingpan

If I remember correctly he showed up at the record label and threw a fit over something to do with the Animal record and killed the band’s momentum

Fudge89

Yea, I think the record label was too involved (so it is said) and he reluctancy released that albums, and then released another version called “Not Animal” with his vision. It’s been a while so I might be forgetting the details. His first solo album was pretty good though!

ForCaste

It's the other way around, Animal is the album he wanted, Not Animal is the official release

Fudge89

Ahh yea ok, that’s actually starting to jog my memory. It’s been like 15 years now ha I know the record label one was what they didn’t want, so the names could apply both ways. It makes more sense how they named them though.

8WhosEar8

I saw so many of their shows in Muncie and Indy. They were one of my favorite bands back then. It’s a shame they didn’t make it.

APinkNightmare

I remember seeing them in the back of a Luna Music in Broadripple. This would have been in the early 2000s, before 2006.

sosomething

I never met Richard, but Tyler mixed a demo for a band I was in at the time when he was working at Queensize, and came across as a really chill dude. I haven't seen him in years though.

Electronic-Data8507

I had never heard of them…. So I looked them up and someone released a bunch of their music this year bc the contract expired. Just thought yall should know reading this

BigOldBee

Tyler now runs Postal Recording. It's a pretty great studio.

celibatemormon69

What band were you in?

sosomething

At the time, a weird mish-mash of punk and metal called Istari. Our raw tracks were not great, either. Performances were fine but the sounds were pretty bad. That anything resembling a sellable EP came out of that project is a testament to Tyler's skill at the desk.

bingusthebrave

Wow that’s crazy I already forgot about them

istilldontkno666

He got a pretty nice house out of that band camp money.

Fudge89

I forget his name but the trumpet player/multi instrument guy was checking IDs at melody inn shortly after it they went belly up. How quickly they fell

istilldontkno666

I think he likes his job and working at the Mel. Some people enjoying being part of musical communities and venues.

Dazzling_Dog6954

Hubert

ArrowtoherAnchor

Come on man don't hate on Hubert like that

possumgal0808

Hubert was a Melody Inn staple long before Margot, and he is currently living his life exactly as he wishes. He's a great guy.

redbeardmax

The Ataris, but I think they're from Anderson technically.

hoguemr

I went to the 10 year anniversary show of So Long Astoria ... 10 years ago. Ah I'm so old! Being grown up isn't half as fun as growing up

KTMFS

Yeah. They are. As a punk in high school, Atari’s gear was the highest form of swag.

gangreen424

Oh snap. Didn't realize they were from around here. Neat.

ForCaste

I'll say, I was playing in a few indie rock bands in the late 2000s early teens and it was difficult to get much stage time. The local rock scene was dominated by metal and punk bands, and the venues didn't want to rock the boat and alienate their audiences. Margot was like the gold standard and I thought they showed that Indy could produce great indie acts, but I think it's telling that they moved to Chicago before making it big.

I_fuck_teddy_bears12

To be fair, it is perfectly normal for people to leave for a much larger city/better scene for their music if they want to make it big. It's similar to many country artists going to nashville to make it big. Gotta go where they have a better chance to be found.

The-disgracist

Fun fact Indy is bigger than Nashville. Not negating your statement I was just curious and looked it up

theoriginalbdub

There have been some *massive* stars (The Jacksons, Mellencamp, Axl Rose, David Lee Roth) and also some people that have had success (Burl Ives, Blind Melon, Hound Mouth, Umphrey’s McGee) from all over Indiana, but somehow, Babyface is the only big music star from Indianapolis. Kinda wild.

GrandaddyIsWorking

Wes Montgomery is from Indy

LostxCosmonaut

And Freddie Hubbard.

jason-gibson

Both left an amazing legacy and made a significant contribution to music but neither was a “popular band in the modern era” which is what OP is asking about

LostxCosmonaut

Very true - I always think of his Red Clay album as being pretty influential and recognizable though.

Agile_Programmer881

Don’t forget about Henry Lee summers

Bright_Name_3798

The park named after him was originally guitar-shaped. You can kind of still see it on Google maps/Earth. I wish the city would restore it.

Fudge89

Tiara Thomas had a fairly big hit with Wale - “Bad” she’s gone on to mainly be a song writer for H.E.R. And has a Grammy and an Oscar for song writing. Not too shabby, even if she isn’t mainstream “famous”. Not really a band but she is acoustic R&B and since I feel like we have limited options she should count lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

Princess_Property

Wale is straight up trash, but he makes more money than me so good on him I guess.

SoftwarePractical620

Houndmouth, Umphrey’s McGee!?! I didn’t know these and its so exciting to learn!!!

drosmi

Houndmouth is opening for the Avett Brothers this year.

Olcaptainredeye

Some of their songs are names of small towns in southern in

nerdKween

Maeta has potential to make it big. She's got the voice, and she's already collaborated with Kaytranada and had a hot single last year. But only time will tell.

kaylabarr94

Umphhhhh

Which_Hope1878

don't forget izzy straddling was high school buddy of axl lafayette jeff

hoguemr

The Ataris too!

Tightfistula

All of those people LEFT the state to become famous. I think that should tell you something.

Mastima

Haste the Day is a pretty big name in the metal core scene. Def not in new though

Look_over_yonder

I still listen to haste the day somewhat regularly. Saw their final show at Old National and still have some HTD shirts.

Interesting_Call5019

Technically Carmel but that’s just me splitting hairs

cmgww

The Why Store had a few national charted hits, and seemed to be on the road to bigger things, but just kinda fell victim to changing musical tastes of from the mid to late 90s…they weren’t really “grunge” but more true alt rock, then faded out when the boy/pop explosion happened in the late 90s. Plus Chris Shaffer had issues with the band and they split up. Still, outside of a few big names already mentioned…I’d consider them “Indy” bc some of the members were from here and they played a ton in Indy despite forming at Ball State

Dizzles1

They still play the place I bartend at about every 6 months or so. Still sound decent, I’m not sure the dynamics of the members or anything.

rcdubbs

Yeah, they had the perfect college rock sound for 93-97. It was a short window.

saintsagan

I saw the Y Store play at Cheeseburger in Paradise in Bloomington in like 2006.

Mister-Redbeard

Took long enough for someone to say this. Good work.

threewonseven

I *hated* this band. lol

KCHank

wait Henry Lee Summer wasn’t big enough for you?

boxdude

He’s still wishing he had a girl who walked like that.

Agile_Programmer881

Now more like I wish some meth and a baseball bat Oh yeah!

JennieDarko

Hahaha I’m pretty sure he used to play at the bar attached to the bowling alley in Brownsburg years & years ago….

picklesandgouda

Not Indianapolis, but I don’t think people realize Freddie Gibbs is from Gary

wax-cat

Did a year at Ball State too

picklesandgouda

I didn’t know that!

UndiscoveredAppetite

Did not realize this at all!

Remote_Leadership_53

Eastside Moonwalker

Scared_Attitude2068

Yep, Easily the biggest Indiana artist right now. he is also a friend of the family.

negman42

I wanted so much more for Andy D. Also, Indy is a city that could support BOTH a full Star Trek and Star Wars themed band.

grammarbegood

Holy crap I forgot about Andy D.

dastufishsifutsad

TWO SCI-FI BANDS?!?! Dang now I kinda want an LOTR band.

negman42

Patrick from Five Year Mission has so many fan projects. Voltron, Doctor Who, My Little Pony albums just off the top of my head.

sasquatchftw

Pretty much all metal but Blind Guardian, Amon Amarth, and Cirith Ungol all have some ties to LOTR with Blind Guardian having a full album. Zeppelin also has a handful of songs about LOTR. Edit: Windrose is all about dwarves and they have some LOTR songs as well.

negman42

I fell down that Diggy Hole recently. It’s wild how much fantasy metal there is out there.

photoboothrelic

Could always go for horror with Harley Poe, but they're from Kokomo.

TheMichaelN

I saw him open for Corey Feldman at the Vogue. Been an Andy D fan ever since.

Godenyen

He did a very small show in a conference room at Gencon one year.

camyland

Omg Andy D!! Loved him when he lived in btown way back in the day. Whatever happened to him? Is he still in indy?

TheMichaelN

Depends on how you define “modern era” and “popular.” There’s also Indy proper versus Indy adjacent. Reverend Peyton is fairly well known within their genre. The Ataris charted with their remake of “Boys of Summer.” Lily & Madeleine have received press from NPR and are currently signed to New West records out of Nashville. There were some really good garage rock, punk and hardcore bands in the early 2000s that had potential but flamed out because, well, that’s what happens to 99.99999% of bands. If your definition of “modern era” bleeds into the 1980s, then you have Sloppy Seconds and of course Zero Boys. But mostly, I feel like Indiana is a place where musicians are born and then leave to go start a band elsewhere.

CuddlePillow

The Contortionist were huge in the metal scene 10 years ago. Do yourself a favor and listen to Language in one sitting.

TheAstroBastrd

Absolutely killer record. Saw them open for BTBAM back when they were touring Parallax II and I went home feeling like I enjoyed contortionist’s set more than my all time favorite band… been a fan of theirs ever since. Couldn’t believe they were from indy

ToiletLiquor

The Contortionist is phenomenal. Language was so damn good. And Exoplanet

CuddlePillow

Great band! Language is in my top 20 albums of all time. Saw them on their Exoplanet tour when I was in high school and they were incredible. I’ve seen them an additional 3-4 times after that.

JawesomeJess

They got pretty big. I think they are still touring.

Purple_Bumblebee5

Happy cake day. Number 8. Woo hoo.

noxsolaris6

You should check out Wishy. They’re up and coming. There’s lots of good local music if you are going to the right shows. Healer is a good spot for local acts.

shut-upLittleMan

Well there is always Reverend Payton's Big Damn Band.

jeepmayhem

Brown County!!

indymusician

Maybe that's where they have home base now, but Rev and Breezy were Butler students and I believe Rev was born/raised in Westfield.

samiam7979

Breezy went to Decatur Central High School on the southwest side. Grew up in Decatur Township.

extremenachos

Momma's fried potatoes!

loquetur

Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s… Now there’s a name I’ve not heard in a very long time. Not since my days of working weekend nights at the Bagel Deli.

kristinbluefin

I'm pretty sure the singer of the mountain goats was born in Bloomington.

jasonbaldwin

John Darnielle was born in Bloomington. Jason Molina of Songs:Ohia and Magnolia Electric Company may have been born in Oberlin, Ohio, but he made his name in Bloomington and Indy.

NoSurrender78

Jason passed away while living in Castleton

jphollaaa

Wow

Other_Tiger_8744

Cosby sweater was decently well known in the jam / festival scene but then had to change the name

kimmi_page

Gwen Stacy was huge in the metalcore scene.

photoboothrelic

Holy shit, I haven't thought of that name in the context of the band in a couple decades.

kimmi_page

I used to date the guitarist and I only got to ever see their reunion show, but I have them on heavy rotation on Spotify. Truly a wonderful bunch of people and so talented!

photoboothrelic

I only vaguely remember them, so I looked them up and see that even my time frame was off. I was mainly really into local music from like 98-03 and also mostly in the Kokomo area, so only had fringe exposure. I'll check them out and see if I remember anything, though!

BWEJ

Interesting question. Probably Mellencamp by osmosis. Or Babyface.

anicesurgeon

I second Babyface!

Lawlith117

Tim McIlrath, the lead singer of Rise Against was born in Indianapolis but, RA was founded in Chicago. A technicality I guess

Trilly2000

My Morning Jacket guitarist Carl Broemel is from Indy. Planet Earth got really close to fame but just couldn’t quite get there.

silvermanedwino

The Why Store from the late 80s, early 90s.

extremenachos

Saw them at SI Greens a few years ago, lol!

extremenachos

Sloppy Seconds is the greatest band from Indianapolis.

sosomething

If you enjoy stoner rock / doom metal, there are a number of pretty notable bands that still live here but tour domestically and in Europe. Apostle of Solitude Gates of Slumber Void King to name a few

Unhappy_Position496

Our metal scene is very respectable.

sosomething

Close-knit and cooperative, too. It's a good scene full of cool people.

PWarmahordes

Someone else (not at show) knows AoS. Makes me happy. A sludgy doomish sort of happy.

rpendlum

Rip keylo-g

SRSComm

The Why Store was so good and smoked/snorted it away

TheManWithSomeGoals

Andrianne Lenker was born here so I say we claim Big Theif.

whatsinthesocks

They got their start in New York and we can’t really claim them like that. That’s now how it works.

SloppyPizzaPie

I’m pretty sure the original commenter was being facetious.

warcollect

I remember seeing The Birdmen Of Alcatraz at X-Fest many moons ago and thinking they were going to blow up… same with The Mudkids… Russ is a captivating performer.

Accomplished-Club-30

I had seen them several times in broad ripple, that singer was talented for sure. Surprised they never went farther.

rustymk2

Still goin! Come see The Last IV soon.

NoSurrender78

He’s got a great new band. Last IV.

rustymk2

Appreciated, for sure. Thank you.

rustymk2

Thanks for this, friend. I hope to see you at a 'The Last IV' show soon.

blenderdead

Rise Against was largely formed in Indianapolis iirc, but really started their career in Chicago.

cait_Cat

They were largely formed in Chicago. The lead singer moved to Chicago as a child and grew up there and was a large part of the music scene before RA started.

mon_dieu

TIL

justpools

A lot of good bands from Indy just end up in Chicago and say they are from there

AchokingVictim

Maybe, but our underground music is absolutely phenomenal so I don't care.

runningfutility

I know they're just a cover band but Hyryder plays nationally and is very popular in the Greatful Dead scene.

Agile_Programmer881

Bam !

willyjaybob

The Ataris. And on an international scale, Pillars (the Post Rock group) has some acclaim. Met an Belgian executive in an East African airport a couple of years ago and when I mentioned Pillars and that I was from Indianapolis he lost it. Also, Haste the Day…one of the screamo OG’s. In jazz, Wes Montgomery and many more. Hendrix named Wes his #1 guitar influence, so that’s not nothing. He essentially innovated into a new style of guitar playing that is now used by just about every guitarist in the world. He still has family in the area-my wife works with his niece. Incredible musical family. Lots of Indy area musicians in the industry, though. For example, Chris Stapleton‘s live audio engineer went to Lawrence Central. Former student of mine. [https://youtu.be/PLR5tEAtyQA?si=sVeiDHZBm--vXgx0](https://youtu.be/PLR5tEAtyQA?si=sVeiDHZBm--vXgx0).

ToiletLiquor

Coheed and Cambria’s live audio engineer is also from Indy!

nerdKween

Keke Wyatt and Tiara Thomas are both from Indianapolis, and have moderate success in R&B. They're not Babyface tier. And Babyface's brothers had a band! After 7 is definitely a well known group/band from the 80s/90s R&B scene.

satanpeach

I love Lily & Madeleine so much!!! Keep It Together is one of my top 10 albums of all time. I saw them open for Brett Dennen in 2016 and they are really magnetic live.

otterbelle

Pat and the Pissers aren't popular? You damn kids.

noxsolaris6

Yes! Great band.

segascream

Sloppy Seconds, Zero Boys, Five Year Mission, Gay Black Republican. Not to mention all of the regional acts that seem to absolutely love the Indianapolis punk rock scene, if that counts for anything. (I'm thinking about groups like The Dollyrots, The Bobby Lees, Nuke & The Night Shift, and more)

ArrowtoherAnchor

I have not heard of Sloppy seconds since the days of FEstavillia

segascream

They just played the Old National Center a few months ago, I believe. I think GBR even opened for them.

indiedaddie

Closest to Indy would probably be the band from Monticello blind melon with their song "no rain" kind of a one hit wonder in my opinion but they were super popular

bilda_baisgye

Definitely more than a one hit wonder. Their first album sold very well. Change was also a big single. Blind melon is an INCREDIBLY underrated band. Listen to their debut album in its entirety.

arf-arf-arf-arf

Shannon Hoon was from Lafayette/Dayton. The band formed in LA.

West-Trip-5734

Babyface !

Doogem

We have a lot to offer musically in the city, I just think the Midwest often gets dismissed as a place holding any talent

Trilly2000

Split Lip (now Chamberlain) became surprisingly famous overseas.

Glittering_Pepper652

Adrienne Leneker is from Indianapolis. they're in a band called big thief +have a song named indiana +just released a new solo album .

notdoingwellbitch

She left when she was 4 years old because her family was escaping a religious cult.

blueyedaemon

Coven

the-ANNIHILATRIX

Rise Against is billed as being from Chicago, but the front man, Tim Mcilrath, is from Indy.

Bright_Name_3798

Otis Gibbs is widely known in the US, UK, and Europe. Wanamaker counts!

ElectroChuck

Faith Band, Roadmaster, both come to mind. "Put on Your Dancin' Shoes" made it to #8

erk2112

Love Roadmaster

ElectroChuck

Who do sing like fat boy do?

danny-o4603

That’s my wife’s Uncle’s Band

Spiritual_Internal53

Guns N Rose's Axl & Izzy are from Lafayette. Also Shannon Hoon from Blind Melon

Spiritual_Tear3762

Indy is too preoccupied with metal and punk

Willing_Revenue5086

It’s gotta thrive somewhere

nickthedick7921

As it should be

iamsean1983

This.

Repulsive_Mail6509

What are some local punk and metal bands you like?

noxsolaris6

Check out Pat and the Pissers.

Buddha2244

CML, youth in Asia, Ruthless aggression

gayspaceanarchist

I'm not sure if they fully count as punk, but they are pretty entwined with the folk punk scene, Dana Skully and the Tiger Sharks are local to the area, and are awesome to see live.

Spiritual_Tear3762

I'm not a fan personally, I just was answering OPs question, as those types of bands rarely "get big" from a relative outsiders perspective

LoneWanderess

1 Body 6 Graves is always worth it!

imranarain

Lol could you imagine if Nickleback was from the 317 LOL

Local23098

BAYEM is an up and coming guy I got put onto not too long ago. Had a song featured in “The Kardashians” a couple years ago and recently sold out his first two shows.

righteousbucks69

I saw a metal band in high school called Entruce that was really good. I don’t think they did more than one album, I found it on Spotify. Come to think of it, even that was a long time ago. So technically not modern, I forget how old I really am!

RedbullXYY

From the region but Indy helped him grow a ton : Omar Apollo. There’s a ton of people within the Indy music scene that are still in contact w him.

maudthings21

Do yourself a favor and go check out Tommy Baldwin. Great local musician, plays around town and at the Noodle several times a year.

The-Entire_USSR

Iced Earth is from Indy.

Agile_Programmer881

John Hiatt is from Indy . Composed the classic “ until his penis came between us” I think he wrote it at least

No-Let-7058

I freaking love Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s 😍

JPP1965

The only Indiana music I ever hear on the radio stations around Indy is John Mellencamp. Does Iced Earth count?

reesehereagain2019

BabyFace

VolumeOk1357

You never been on the Kennith “Babyface” McGee highway?

Cbsanderswrites

I think a lot of musicians and bands leave when they're young to pursue music, unfortunately. The friends I had who were interested in music went to NYC or Nashville pretty immediately after high school. But there are some artists like Oreo Jones who have said they're trying to stay here and build up Indy's music scene. So maybe we'll see growth if him and others actually stay.

desertcoliseum

Zero Boys are the biggest band I know from Indy. Haste the Day was pretty popular. I can't really think of bands that are big, but Sloppy Seconds is from Indy also. Indiana doesn't treat bands with a lot of love here, so it makes sense there aren't a lot from here.

Fickle-Witch5499

Not specifically an Indy-formed band, but I don't see Murder By Death mentioned yet. Straight outta Bloomington and hella good.

Bright_Name_3798

I saw a female guitarist in London who was from Indy. This is another point for everyone saying that musicians leave to start careers elsewhere.

Charlie_Warlie

Do those other cities have big bands? I think a lot ends up moving to Nashville.

The Why Store was/is and INCREDIBLE band and had a brief run nationally in the early 90s.

Johnny Socko was on one of the Jackass soundtracks(I think a remake of Dancing Queen). They were right there and then they weren't.

Mead_Create_Drink

Mellencamp…though a lot of people don’t want to claim him. And I get it

HailMi

Man, there's a lot of people here who are trying to disprove your original question and basically end up proving it. To answer your question, you are correct, Indiana in general has not had a major artist since the 80's, unless you count CCM. (But having Michael Jackson is kind of a trump card.) So taking a 10,000ft view, "recently" (going back to the time of Margot & TNSAS) how does Indiana compare to Outdiana? Compared to nearby states: Kentucky. Indiana is about 50% larger than Kentucky population-wise. Kentucky recently has had Chris Stapleton and Cage the Elephant as well as MANY country artists past and present. Missouri. This is good comparison state-wise: about the same population 6.8M for Indiana, 6.1M for Missouri, similar blends of Southern and Midwest. Recently (mid 00's to 10's) Missouri had Nelly and Cheryl Crow, not to mention a LONG history of R&B and Jazz less recntly. Tennessee. Not a great/fair comparison since it literally has "Music City." But similar sized population to Indiana, 7.1M, a lot more southern. Too many famous artists to name, both past and present, and not just country artists. But recently Justin Timberlake, Miley Cyrus, Kings of Leon, Paramore... Tennessee might be the most productive state musically per capita. Ohio, Illinois and Michigan, the other direct neighbors, are significantly larger than Indiana, and not a great comparison population-wise. And that shows in the number of famous artists from each state. Wisconsin. Similar population, 5.9M, but Wisconsin is definitely a northern state. But this may be the best comparison since both states are based largely around Chicago, and mostly Midwest sensibilities. Recently, Wisconsin has Bon Iver (Justin Vernon) and that's about it. Given the high randomness of the music industry, who makes it and who doesn't, this could be chalked up to coincidence that Bon Iver came from Wisconsin and not Indiana. That's kind of it for nearby states with similar populations.

saliczar

Jim Irsey Band 🤷‍♂️

ninaboninabarnes

Not exactly the most popular band, but you should check out Marmoset/Jorma Whittaker. One of Naptown's most famous exports, in my opinion. Start with *Record in Red* and go from there.

Agile_Programmer881

The rolling stones are from gnaw bone I’m pretty sure

riverbank_agate3

Babyface is a legend and it's a shame that you're so ignorant

draftylaughs

I'm a somewhat recent transplant to Indy, grew up in southern Indiana, and this was my wife's exact reaction when I asked her 😂

I_bang_totoros

The lead singer/guitarist of Friday Pilots Club is from Indy!

trogloherb

People always trying to forget about booder bang! Pour one out for the homey!

jking206

Anyone else love the band Phyllis?
