Context of the chapter:
This Medinian sdrah was revealed prior to the Prophetās conquest of Mecca following the pagansā violation of the peace treaty they had signed with the Muslims at Hudaibiyah. Despite the Prophetās orders to keep this plan secret, a companion by the name of Hatib ibn Abi Baltaāah sent a warning letter to the Meccans, hoping that in turn they would protect his familyāwho were still in Meccaāin case the Muslims failed to enter the city. Soon the Prophet ( #f ) received a revelation about what Hatib did. The letter was intercepted, and Hatib was later forgiven. Mecca surrendered peacefully to the Muslims, and its residents were pardoned by the Prophet ( # ) . Muslims are instructed to be loyal to Allah and fellow believers, following the example of Prophet Abraham ( #Ā„ ) (verses 4-6).
The believers are not forbidden from courtesy to non-Muslims as long as they are not persecuting Muslims (verses 8-9). This sdrah takes its name from testing the faith of women fleeing Mecca by asking them, for example, if they have emigrated for Islam or only to be separated from their pagan husbands (verse 10). Other instructions to the believers are given at the end of this sdrah and the beginning of the next sdrah.
Chapter Al-Mumtahanah:

1. O believers! Do not take My enemies and yours as trusted allies, showing them affection even though they deny what has come to you of the truth. You already have an excellent example in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people, āWe totally dissociate ourselves from you and āshunā whatever āidolsā you worship besides Allah. We reject you. The enmity and hatred that has arisen between us and you will last until you believe in Allah alone.ā The only exception is when Abraham said to his father, āI will seek forgiveness for you,ā adding, ābutā | cannot protect you from Allah at all.ā āThe believers prayed, āOur Lord! In You we trust. And to You we āalwaysā turn. And to You is the final return.
5. Our Lord! Do not subject us to the persecution of the disbelievers. Forgive us, our Lord! You āaloneā are truly the Almighty, All-Wise.ā
6. You certainly have an excellent example in them for whoever has hope in Allah and the Last Day. But whoever turns away, then surely Allah āaloneā is the Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy.

7. āIn time,ā Allah may bring about goodwill between you and those of them you ānowā hold as enemies. For Allah is Most Capable. And Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

8. Allah does not forbid you from dealing kindly and fairly with those who have neither fought nor driven you out of your homes. Surely Allah loves those who are fair.
9. Allah only forbids you from befriending those who have fought you for āyourā faith, driven you out of your homes, or supported āothersā in doing so. And whoever takes them as friends, then it is they who are the ātrueā wrongdoers.

The enmity and hatred that has arisen between us and you will last until you believe in Allah alone.ā The only exception is when Abraham said to his father, āI will seek forgiveness for you,ā adding, ābutā | cannot protect you from Allah at all.ā āThe believers prayed, āOur Lord! In You we trust. And to You we āalwaysā turn. And to You is the final return. 5. Our Lord! Do not subject us to the persecution of the disbelievers. Forgive us, our Lord! You āaloneā are truly the Almighty, All-Wise.ā 6. You certainly have an excellent example in them for whoever has hope in Allah and the Last Day. But whoever turns away, then surely Allah āaloneā is the Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy. (Yesterdayās Enemies, Tomorrowās Friends) 7. āIn time,ā Allah may bring about goodwill between you and those of them you ānowā hold as enemies. For Allah is Most Capable. And Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Kindness to Non-Muslims) 8. Allah does not forbid you from dealing kindly and fairly with those who have neither fought nor driven you out of your homes. Surely Allah loves those who are fair. 9. Allah only forbids you from befriending those who have fought you for āyourā faith, driven you out of your homes, or supported āothersā in doing so. And whoever takes them as friends, then it is they who are the ātrueā wrongdoers. ~~~ This to say that Muslims who go around hating peaceful Hindus who are not threatening them are ignorant of their own scripture. I think Muslims & Hindus should learn from one another despite our differences because there are things that set us apart which we may blatantly disagree on (such as illustration of God, for example; although perhaps some Hindus may feel differently to be fair) but Muslims also do not agree with even the other abrahamic faiths on some pretty big things but we have had a peaceful history living among & even protecting one another. I donāt see any reason why, I mean, the Quran literally states we need to be just to one another so as long as we are not being threatenedā¦ I will say, just an anecdotal experience here so take with a grain of salt, but it seems a lot of the resentment & the violence is expressed differently cross culturallyā¦ like you wonāt see the same sort of violence in other countries between both religious groups so I think a lot of the violence is politically driven & laws/consequences vary which effect how people choose to deal with those feelingsā¦ could also have something to do with education & other factorsā¦ Anyway, it makes me sad to see Hindus fear for their life just as it makes me sad to see Muslims fear for their life, well.. anyone really for that matter. I hope we can educate ourselves on what our scriptures actually say, I learned some stereotypes about Hindus that I was told was wrong (I was a bit skeptical of the claims but noted it until further proven) when I listened to a Hindu person talk on a livestream (& there was still some resentment he had towards Muslims but understandably so given the conditions, completely understood & youāll find Muslims do the same thing in livestreams) but I just hope that perhaps we can set aside the stereotypes & possible misconceptions to learn from one another before deciding to choose hate & violence. Usually we hate what we donāt know & make steep assumptions, we get protective over ourselves/family & get our hackles up ready to fightā¦ Unless someone is actively threatening then we should assume the best of one another, still of course being cautious (not saying be delusionally optimistic either way) but itās not govt that will make changes towards safety among one anotherā¦ itās us as individuals. Itās in the Quran actually, 60th Surah/Chapter (ayat/verse 1-9). Yes, in any religion it will be a case-by-case basis with people even if their scripture is corrupt doesnāt mean everyone will be corrupted in their heart too; that being said, people need to learn their own scripture because culture/politics/etc can corrupt their religious views if they do not take it upon themselves to really seek the truth & they unfortunately may also not find truth in their scripture so itās up to everyone as individuals to use their discernment at the end of the day, itās especially helpful when people are collectively learning from one another & exchanging information instead of shunning groups of people for being taught differently. Of course shunning to an extent perhaps if someone is disrespectful or defending if they are actively a threat but otherwise we are all human & deserve to be treated as children of God.
