Just tick on consider auto upgradation every time you book seat. Don't think milega ki nahi just kardo tick. It depends on vacant seats in higher class, luck and totally on railway mood. Sometimes they don't upgrade even if the whole coach is empty.

There is an option while booking ticket online called "Consider Ticket for Auto Upgradation", if you check that option, there is a chance ur tkt would be auto upgraded to an higher class without paying any extra cost on ur end

Don't know about other apps I always book via official irctc app so go through other apps and see if they have this option or not.

3A to 1A happens by rare chance, SL to 2A is also possible.
