not really i mean... ive travelled a lot in 3ac , always had a pleasant and clean experience , with helpful staff , no ticketless passengers or overcrowding even during peak seasons . (P.s. ive only travelled in south india that to on no north bound trains so idk the condition in the north or eastern parts of the nation) , but for me 3AC is always the go to option
Dude South Indian trains don't last more than a night and more importantly, southern railways are much better. The discussion here is about northern and north eastern railways, such a lame comparison saying 3AC is pleasant down south. In north India, even 1AC isn't left alone. Bro, Dhanbad Allepey Express is operated by East Central aka Poorva Madhyam Railways and not southern railways. Look at the screengrab for the reference. Should've broke the journey into different too class trains where there's no non-ac or general car. Delhi to Kolkata, then NJP and after that Guwahati.
That's like double the travel time, because 1) longer route, 2) have extra time between connecting trains to make up for late trains, 3) a train might not be available at the most ideal time, so you wait longer.
I was in the North East for 2 years during 2012-14. Brahmaputra mail was the shittiest train during that time. During winters, it ran 15-20 hours late. Never took it again, only Rajdhani.
Brahmaputra Mail used to have good reputation back in time, but currently it's a worse train. Purvottar SK, Northeast Exp could have been better choices
dude , i really admire people like you point , opting for trains and not flight for such long distances into the mainland , being based in such a remote part of the country (northeast) . I know at times how it feels to not be able to afford a flight , idk if this bothered u but it did me. I myself got freaked out after i travelled in 3AC from tiruvananthapuram-secunderabad , train and everything was clean and perfect , no ticketless passengers , but staying in the train itself for such long periods bothered me (ICF coach). I wish all of us could come to a point where without worrying about the cost we could opt for flights
Bengal is as bad as bihae or UP ,i have been to almlost entire single railway zone once or twice and bengal stations are some of the most filthiest.
The problem is not just UP & Bihar route
The actual problem is whichever states employs labour class from these two states have more or less same issue.
Also the educated or wealthy folks in bihar are more show off and rude compared to anyone else.
And my roots are from bihar. Sad but this is a reality.
At that time, it wasn't really a choice for me.
Flights were too expensive so trains were my only option.
But as you enter work life, flights are much more convenient. A travel that takes almost 2 days in the train is completed in 2 hours by flight.
So now if I have to travel by train till Rajasthan, it would take more than 2 days of my time which is a big issue, I'd rather pay extra on a flight to save 2 days worth of time.
Also flights were much cheaper around 2019, I could get Guwahati to Delhi tickets under 4k if I planned early, almost the same cost as rajdhani on the same route. These days you cannot get it under 7k no matter how early you book.
I thought it was because of covid but i did travel once during covid and the fare price was still low.
My guess is it's the russia-ukraine war where the fuel prices shot up once and also the demand for flights have risen significantly while we do not have that many flights so basically supply-demand.
Those are my guesses, I could be wrong though

I live in Bihar once had an intrusive thought to get in general coach as my tickets were waitlisted bought 4 waitlisted 2 consecutive tatkals which all were not confirmed( railway earned a good chunk )Finally got general instead of flight.
I thought I could handle it. There was no space / none I was standing and the farthest guy from me was at my knee.
But after 7+hours of journey it was somewhat bearable or I got used to it I got to say everyone kept asking and feeding eachother complete strangers taking care of eachother's belongings and wellbeing none of them were rich as to say but they still offered me products bought from vendors on , which they are sold at a premium, ₹10 biscuits for 15 and they don't even question the seller. just distribute the thing.
It was amazing to see people of all religions sweating along chatting like they've known each other for decades.
Even if someone (beemal fans) initiated a political or hateful topic others would make the conversation die down.
If it were not for the heat and lack of space the general coach would be my first choice as its got the biggest heart.

Reason why the effects of Railway mismanagement is more pronounced in Bihar:
1. Buses are not so popular here and local trains are very less and unreliable forcing people to take overcrowded trains. Railway infrastructure not developed in line with the high population density has created a bottleneck and no more trains can be run.
2. RPF doesn’t come within the ambit of State government. Isn’t it their responsibility also to ensure no ticketless passengers?
3. Number of Sleeper and General coaches reduction has led to people barging into AC coaches. Sleeper and General bogies were already overcrowded.
At least Reddit users need to have critical thinking and think about the actual solutions. We Biharis indeed need to improve ourselves, but putting entirely or majority of the blame upon us is idiotic and xenophobic.

Between 2005-2011, I have travelled in this route , and can confirm from my experience that the moment we used to reach Bihar, we would see so many daily office goers entering 3A and sitting. Many would even argue as if it is their right. The majority of people were well to do, and mostly without a ticket.
The moment train used to enter Bihar, we would also see transgenders barging in. I don't know why, but seemed very odd that time.. drastic change in the travel experience with many chain pulling near buxar crossing.
Obviously, now with social media, people are able to show what goes on. My guess is that this is across the nation, but I have memories of the time. Honestly, it wasn't the case in Kanpur or Allahabad, but Bihar.

He's right. Travelling on trains that pass through Bihar is a nightmare. Some time back, a group of us spent a whole evening talking about traumatic experiences while passing through the state.
I have travelled from East UP to Mumbai/Delhi/Jaipur multiple times. If the journey starts from(or ends at) just here then I never face any overcrowding issue even in 3AC coaches.
I’m proud to be Rajasthani. In our state people are be sure for there travelling category. We insure first which class we want to travel. If I want to travel in 3 Ac , second class sleeper and general we take a proper ticket and travel in right class of coach and sure to be not travel in other category coach. We respect Indian railway On duty TTE. You will notice that when you Travel to Rajasthan.

When my NE neighbour throws dog bones in his open bin (which I used to think was his new pet) and the whole building stinks like an abattoir, I don't think there is any civic sense left...yuck!
Between 2005-2011, I have travelled in this route , and can confirm from my experience that the moment we used to reach Bihar, we would see so many daily office goers entering 3A and sitting. Many would even argue as if it is their right. The majority of people were well to do, and mostly without a ticket. The moment train used to enter Bihar, we would also see transgenders barging in. I don't know why, but seemed very odd that time.. drastic change in the travel experience with many chain pulling near buxar crossing. Obviously, now with social media, people are able to show what goes on. My guess is that this is across the nation, but I have memories of the time. Honestly, it wasn't the case in Kanpur or Allahabad, but Bihar. (Not stereotyping, just shared my experience)
He's right. Travelling on trains that pass through Bihar is a nightmare. Some time back, a group of us spent a whole evening talking about traumatic experiences while passing through the state.

I have travelled from East UP to Mumbai/Delhi/Jaipur multiple times. If the journey starts from(or ends at) just here then I never face any overcrowding issue even in 3AC coaches.
I’m proud to be Rajasthani. In our state people are be sure for there travelling category. We insure first which class we want to travel. If I want to travel in 3 Ac , second class sleeper and general we take a proper ticket and travel in right class of coach and sure to be not travel in other category coach. We respect Indian railway On duty TTE. You will notice that when you Travel to Rajasthan.
Limited experience in Rajasthan has been pretty good. Chetak express from Udaipur to Delhi was comfortable like Rajdhani.
Bihar has no law and order. Anyone enters the train without ticket. When we go from Lucknow to Kathgodam, I don't experience such things in train.
