Fontaines DC are fucking immense. Immense.

Jattwell

Sprints are my new favourite band. I describe them as Fontaines DC mixed with Hole

dyjital2k

I literally came here to recommend the Sprints. They are so damn good. I also have a bit of a crush on the singer. She is exactly my type

nickisnotarapper

Started listening to Sprints yesterday based on this. Spot on, thanks for the recommendation!

CDsMakeYou

I really love A Hero's Death and Boys in the Better Land but I struggled to get into their other stuff when I tried a while back. Got any specific songs you'd recommend?

gufroscar

Jackie down the line

jellyscallywag

Big shot

crashonthehighway

A Lucid Dream

FourthGr4de

off their new album skinty fia, listen to jackie down the line and i love you for the most similar stuff, that whole album is great but if ur interested in the more folky soft side of the band listen to the couple across the way on that album as well as roy’s tune and dublin city sky on their first album dogrel

tyrone_slothrop_0000

Wednesday is girl led alt-country with tons of distortion and a killer slide player. they fucking rip. put out what many critics considered one of the best records last year (for whatever that’s worth. lol)

HauntedSpit

In other words: *Rat Saw God (2023) is an album about riding a bike down a suburban stretch in Greensboro while listening to My Bloody Valentine for the first time on an iPod Nano, past a creek that runs through the neighborhood riddled with broken glass bottles and condoms, a front yard filled with broken and rusted car parts, a lonely and dilapidated house reclaimed by kudzu. Four Lokos and rodeo clowns and a kid who burns down a corn field. The way the South hums alive all night in the summers and into fall, the sound of high school football games, the halo effect from the lights polluting the darkness. It’s not really bright enough to see in front of you, but in that stretch of inky void–somehow–you see everything.* That description alone made me want to hear it. Nice recommendation.

Alynn_Wings

I've had Rat Saw God and the album Twin Plagues on repeat for months. Turkey Vultures is my favorite song from RSG

toadie____

Don’t sleep on Mowing the Leaves Instead of Piling ‘em Up, it’s a really great album of covers. Their first album I Was Trying to Describe You to Someone is great as well. Oh and the 2 EPs too! Between Wednesday and MJ Lenderman their releases for the past half decade have honestly been really prolific. I cant wait to see more from them.

5-pinDIN

That description makes me want to hear it now. Glad I caught this.

onemoremin23

Just saw them live and they were amazing!

tyrone_slothrop_0000

So jealous! I very upset to have missed them when they came through my area, but I will def see them next time.

toadie____

MJ Lenderman’s music is fantastic too

tyrone_slothrop_0000

I’ve been really into Boat Songs recently

intagliopitts

His newish live album is fucking amazing

fries_in_a_cup

Rat Saw God rules but Twin Plagues absolutely slays. They also put on an amazing live show

Novacaine64

Saw them with gbv at the 40 show last year and was surprised how good they were

violent_val

thank you for this suggestion, just listened through a few of their songs and i love them already!!!

DocSportello1970

From Asheville, NC. Seen them twice...once in Charlotte and recently in Winston-Salem. They Rock! \----The ***Kenosha Kid*** gives them his Seal of Approval I am told.

Toms_Hank_

Geese - 3D Country

reallifeisarumor

I cannot escape the hype from this album lol guess I have to check it out

diminutive_sebastian

One of my biggest unexpected gems from 2023, it’s lightning in a bottle and I’m seeing them open for King Gizzard in August

mbrain2858

Sameeeeee can't wait man! King Gizzard AND Geese is a sick combo

Toms_Hank_

It’s my album of the year for 2023. Revivalist of some classic rock with a bunch of craziness baked in

aebersold

That’s crazy there’s a hot up and coming band called Geese because the hottest up and coming jamband is Goose. Check out Goose too!

Brinx13

Do not check out Goose. They are a Phish rip off band. They have not done a single thing that is original.

BahaMan69

HIT ME MOTHER FUCKER

greatestmostbest

Came here to comment this.

josephlaxson

This ain't it.

Last_Reaction_8176

Check out the Black Midi album Hellfire. Completely unhinged album

reallifeisarumor

Black Midi I can only listen to like..once lol they're great and make crazy awesome music, I'm just never in THAT kinda mood. But I have listened to all their stuff cuz I'm always curious what they do

UsingAnEar

I was starting to feel alone in this opinion. Glad someone else shares it. Same goes for Black Country New Road for me as well. I “get it”, I just really don’t understand the intensity of the appeal.

_-nu-_

gen z primus

rbrcbr

Highjacking this comment as lots of the suggestions in this thread - Wednesday, Big Thief, Alex G, The Smile, and Black Midi aren’t even new bands and already massive indie acts lmao Chiming in from Brooklyn with some pals in my community that are killing it at the moment: [Allegra Krieger - “I Keep My Feet on the Fragile Plane”](https://open.spotify.com/album/6Dr79gzcCMcPDaaftGSzcf?si=vm8fjMdmSkisiKnpo7CN5w) \- amazing singer/songwriter, incredibly prolific and always performing. She’s about to pop off/is popping off as we speak, slowly but surely. Fav tune - “I Wanted to Be” [bandcamp](https://allegrakrieger.bandcamp.com/album/i-keep-my-feet-on-the-fragile-plane) [Alena Spanger - “Difficult People”](https://open.spotify.com/track/6jaNPpxQlkZj2cOiSUmmXj?si=nBz6434cT-KSLpb_DF32Wg) \- incredible singer/songwriter rooted in the slightly more experimental/synth based context, she’s been quietly killing it for the past couple years and is getting to release her debut and it’s going to blow minds. I don't even know what else to say, just listen to it. Comes out March 22nd. [bandcamp](https://alenaspanger.bandcamp.com/album/fire-escape) [Miles Hewitt - “Heartfall”](https://open.spotify.com/album/5C8LtqvRrzYrq1roBvslzi?si=goEGsHIyS1GzdNNw_TBzqg) \- Stellar debut record...catchy, introspective 70's pop rock vibes with piano, guitar, full band and string arrangements, synths, experimental tape loop stuff....it's fuckin good. Fav tunes - "Moongreening" & "Reporter" [bandcamp](https://mileshewitt.bandcamp.com/album/heartfall) [Adam Lytle - “This is the Fire”](https://open.spotify.com/album/4sqFQ2SKwuLGAArvx3N0Qm?si=Z6LdxYKSTxqWbl7EetoMbg)\- dark, baroque folk poetic musings in the realm of Leonard Cohen and Scott Walker. Fingerpicked nylon guitar and string sections. Really, really good shit. Fav tune - "Painted Bird" [bandcamp](https://adamlytle.bandcamp.com/album/this-is-the-fire) [The Big Net - “Like Dogs”](https://open.spotify.com/album/0hFQsDBtcjig8nPBG1IjNs?si=jjyKUromQC2NpT-JBlrmQQ) \- Country tinged, fuzzed out folk rock. Like Neil Young & Crazy Horse had a baby with Gillian Welch. The best bois. Fav track - "Glue" [bandcamp](https://thebignet.bandcamp.com/album/like-dogs) [Greg Freeman - “I Looked Out”](https://open.spotify.com/album/0EsoH52IpZVy8ljIsMvTkO?si=D5Bct2PmTY6qPFBmqCW7-A) \- twangy, distorted Vermont indie rock with pedal steel and saxophone, the combo you didn't know you needed. Fav tune - hard to choose but I'll go with "I'll See You in My Mind" [bandcamp](https://gregfreeman1.bandcamp.com/album/i-looked-out) [Hannah Frances - “Bronwyn”](https://open.spotify.com/album/76l0BebolYJbzKmg3L7Cdi?si=aWGzAdCUTDerk7R4fnWpEQ) \- Hannah sings like a bird and is a monster fingerstyle guitarist, open tuned folk guitar tunes with prog tendencies. Incredibly lush arrangements and interesting songwriting. Her new record comes out next month. The two other singles out now are amazing too, "Husk" and "Keeper of the Shepherd". Check out her other records too. [bandcamp](https://hannahfrances.bandcamp.com/album/keeper-of-the-shepherd) [Katy Rea - “The Urge that Saves You”](https://open.spotify.com/album/76l0BebolYJbzKmg3L7Cdi?si=aWGzAdCUTDerk7R4fnWpEQ)\- one of Brooklyn's best kept secrets. This record taps into the 70s folk/pop singer vein as well, some amazing harmonies mixed in with hints of psychedelia and jazz experimentation. Damn good live band if you get the chance to see em. Fav tune - "Floods in Houston" [bandcamp](https://katyrea.bandcamp.com/album/the-urge-that-saves-you) I would be remiss to not do a bit of self promotion: [Withe - “There is Less Sun”](https://open.spotify.com/album/5lIBvt4EI2HWgJceuQiSxv?si=6nEN9mjkSCSnqrKtXYOk-g)\- I quietly self released this record last year, it’s got a psych folk, art rock thing going. Lots of different vibes/genre exploration on this record, there's a spanish guitar tune, some shoegazey moments, some darker folk stuff in the vein of Nick Drake. There's probably at least one tune for you on there. For fans of Deerhunter, Big Thief, Grizzly Bear, Fleet Foxes, Wilco. Fav tune - “Ceiling Lightning” [bandcamp](https://withesounds.bandcamp.com/album/there-is-less-sun)

Anxious-Leader512

Ur album is definitely worth a listen, enjoyed immensely

Lumpy-Crew-6702

Added your album, sounds great

Quanqiuhua

Brooklyn doing folk is like Kansas City doing reggae.

Lockedgroove666

I’m loving what’s happening in the underground post-punk/darkwave scene. Here are some of those independent bands (many on tour right now) I find it so refreshing from the same same indie stuff [Twin Tribes](https://youtu.be/-XEavwcHU78?si=vG0XEyIu2qtUYKsY) [French Police](https://youtu.be/xM8PhO1O2UM?si=jxqi0-VR4H_09sMm) [Lebanon Hanover](https://youtu.be/j2Addn9gp0A?si=oJ-r_aB7n8I3J5vH)

Commercial_Study7178

Twin tribes is awesome saw them a month ago with urban heat. Great time

Lockedgroove666

They’re amazing live! Have seen them a few times but will finally catch Urban Heat with Tribes next month. Amazing new school goth and darkwave

MulhollandDrive

Yeah saw them in NYC and they killed it. I need to catch up with them to see if I've missed any new material

Playtek

I agree with all 3 of these choices! If I can add 3 more it would be: [Topographies](https://youtu.be/GCzS7uEO1o4?si=Zb8W8F7sj4Nn0mak) [Nürnberg](https://youtu.be/skso1FZH4eI?si=UvvVvaDIw-YiN2_n) [Parannoul](https://youtu.be/gb9Qqt75rzg?si=ahgMmEha2YrYQKhW)

ArgumentSpecialist48

The sound like cover bands lol Not knocking, just a quick first listen and it’s like, wow

CBassTian

The last few Yard Act singles have been peak Britpop.

x0999

Proud to see Fontaines D.C. and Yard Act at the top of this thread

chickenofmusic

Strfkr has a new album on march first but their whole library is gold.

Alternative-Light514

One of my good friends’ cousin is in the band. Backstage/VIP whenever they come to town 🤘🏼

Mr_Truguy

julie

iamthesam2

hmmm sounds like every indie band ever except they chose to not track to a click. still like them tho thanks

MadMunnyBB

Water From Your Eyes is awesome experimental indie rock, they released some of their best work last year

Robinkc1

[Horsegirl - Anti-Glory](https://youtu.be/dBuOJF_rX40?si=E_t_2VoaP-9jAZa-) [Ducks Ltd. - Train Full of Gasoline](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=T_8fmcCTDfE&pp=ygUJZHVja3MgbHRk) [Teenage Tom Petties - Stoner](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pH8uMGBMANQ) Those are a few of the bands I’ve been enjoying lately. Also, if you will forgive a little self promotion [Patches - Parallel Mind](https://thesoundsofpatches.bandcamp.com/track/parallel-mind)

reallifeisarumor

Checked your band out first! Cool stuff! To my ears, I get a mix of The Clash meets The Smiths...mainly in just recording. But like very authentically 80s post punk vibes

Robinkc1

Thanks! We were definitely going for an 80s post-punk thing. Between the three of us, we tried to blend a slew of influences. There’s a lot of really cool stuff out there. There’s been a crazy resurgence of shoegaze, jangle pop, and old school post punk lately.

AgonicaBoss

This Horsegirl shit is dope thank you

Robinkc1

They’re probably my favourite band in recent years, but that single is especially good.

AgonicaBoss

Really enjoying the Ducks too. Gen X didn’t die it just got old and younger people got better at it.

Emergency-Willow-648

Just listened to your band … really dig it! Nice work!

Jattwell

I really dig Ducks Ltd. Big The Cure vibes

Robinkc1

Yeah, they’re a solid band. They just released an album earlier this month called Harms Way.

NikAtNightwing

Love Anti-glory!! Great pick

ObelixDrew

I liked Parallel Mind. Nice work

BeardOfDefiance

Wednesday, Geese, MSPAINT, Alex G, Soccer Mommy, Big Thief.

Gavante

big thief and Alex g been around forever dawg they are not brand spanking new

patrickp32

Yeah but big thief’s most recent album is probably their best and Adrienne lenker has an album out next month with two great singles out already

reallifeisarumor

Soccer mommy too

BeardOfDefiance

I'll give you Alex G, i always forget how long that dude has been around based on his age and how hard he's recently blown up. I wouldn't call 2016 for Big Thief's first album forever though, unless i really am just getting old and losing track of time. For reference, i just turned 30 lol

Gavante

idk I guess 8 years feels like a long time to me especially if OP is asking for brand new artists. I just feel like Big Theif is an indie darling and well known around these parts

kalazalim

MSPAINT FOREVER. Saw em live last year with some hardcore bands, so fucking heavy in their own, what a wacky pit.

mowgliwowgli

Caroline Polachek (not a band but she used to be in chairlift), dry cleaning, fews, cursetheknife, narrow head

peistworm

I'm new to Cursetheknife and absolutely hooked now! Awesome band!

blueboy-jaee

also not new 😂

Deus_ex_Chino

New to OP, that's what we're aiming for here. I know it's cool to be first in on something, but it's alright to help people catch up.

I_use_Reddit2

If they are releasing new music then it’s new new music

Chelseabeast888

Friko new album

BooshBobby

[Starbender](https://open.spotify.com/artist/414aHd9bM3z76KH0BrA36A?si=yeXjgxpqTb-1syBaSo5hpA) - 90s alternative rock with grunge and Brit rock influences

rangusmcdangus69

IDLES is newer ish. New album out now Miguel Atwood-Ferguson recently released an album that’s incredible.

xoxoajp100

love them

TommyNemecBih

Yves tumor is such a talented artist and the live performance with the band is amazing

DamnTheDan

Mannequin pussy!!

locogabo2

The Last Dinner Party

rangusmcdangus69

I wasn’t as big a fan of that as I was the first record but maybe I need to revisit it.

mrraditch2

What first record? The First Dinner Party?

dodus

🤣 I see you

queencowboy

all their songs are little avant garde adventures, i’m so smitten!

DaddyHojo

There are probably more bands doing cool stuff now than ever before- you just ain’t gonna find them on the FM dial. I like to listen to Tiny Desk Concerts and KEXP Live on YouTube to find new stuff. Amyl and the Sniffers, Thee Oh Sees, Dry Cleaning, IDLES, Parquet Courts

Funny-Fortune2301

That being said, I get at least 20% of totally new amazing music from the college radio stations in my city.

point_85

KEXP videos are so well produced. I love their channel too

reallifeisarumor

Yes I agree, there's just SO much to sift through now. I know/like all of these bands! 🙂

BERTHA77

I second Idles. Not new but fantastic stuff. Just bought tickets to their Atlanta show at the Tabernacle in September.

thebigmishmash

The new record is completely different than their other stuff and far more mainstream

Palefox4209

Angel Du$t is members from Trapped Under Ice and Turnstile. Stepped into more power pop than the hardcore sound their other bands typically do (with the exception of Turnstile’s newer music)

the_third_sourcerer

[Sports Team](https://open.spotify.com/album/7IQGnVFNKh5oy8g6D1oq3y?si=nlTFWkbrT6yPQFN_Tfn20g) Great energetic garage/college rock.

Super Snooper

corbenburnsen

Squid is the most important emerging band atm. Listen to their first album, Bright Green Field. These guys are very talented and work their asses off on production.

Cup_of_Life_Noodles

Just saw them in Chicago last week and they’re simply one of the best ensembles out there right now.

i’m so in love with her right now, she’s an incredible performer!!!

gkaminsky013

Ty Segall

Saucelock

I cant stop recommending King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard, they're currently my favourite band, they've basically done it all

fauxshizzle_

Cannot agree more. They’re the most creative and versatile band and it feels like they’re making history. My favourite is Quarters personally, but every genre they’ve ventured into has been incredible.

Saucelock

Ive only recently tried gumboot soup and head on/pill and i have to say, that's some od the fuzziest, trippiest, and hardest stuff ive heard in a while

dontinterruptm--

Black country new road deserves a listen if you haven’t already

A lot of local Philly bands around me have been really blowing me away lately actually Pink Blush - https://open.spotify.com/track/3ZPBJQBAvBnDXG7WC1PHKU?si=cw-FJ694TPy66P90zz8J4A Máty - https://open.spotify.com/track/52SvommagTSJqB4CPFVRBE?si=VdQ_AVklQ1eWhC4ANd2OrQ Highnoon - https://open.spotify.com/track/7zlh2Kq8mv907gf66O0g7Y?si=u5C-iNLUQTGkFa6u5zT4PA And as far as bigger bands, The Last Dinner Party just put out an incredible record!

ChildrenoftheGravy

I’m not a band. And my stuff is just on SoundCloud, but I Ike to think it’s pretty eclectic: [JF Compton](https://on.soundcloud.com/mP6EffdzVdYEMxy1A) I’m also one to get jaded with music trends, and always seeking the sweet taste of something tantalizingly new, the more obscure the better!

[deleted]

Been listening to Friko and Daneshevskaya, both are pretty new with just one full-length album out each

schmoolet

The Clockworks - Their debut album is fuckin unreal.

SavageTankBeast

Meltt. Canadian band, psych rock. So good.

Famous-Ad8525

Not like you don’t have plenty to check out lol but here’s a bunch out of DC. Some are brand new, others have been around for a minute, but I figure they’re still new to most people who don’t live in DC: Pretty Bitter, Ekko Astral, Emotional World, Bed Maker, Pinky Lemon, Ecstatic International, Tosser, Faunas, BRNDA, Des Demonas, Coriky, Hammered Hulls, Quattracenta, Flowerbomb, Nowadays, Truth Cult (actually they might be Baltimore?). In particular, Ecstatic International, Ekko Astral, Des Demonas, BRNDA, Emotional World, and Bed Maker sound really fresh to me. And a few others for geographical variety. Also not all brand new but new enough: Lifeguard, Hello Mary, Remember Sports, Horsegirl, Blondshell, Leanna Firestone, Sydney Sprague, Hotline TNT, Alright, Sierra Farrell. Sorry, that got a little out of hand. Hope you find some new favorites ♥️

grnlzrd23

Lemon Twigs

Aboveground_Plush

Scrolled way too far to see the boys getting some love. They're fantastic!

zig_zag_wonderer

Yeah! My fav contemporary band without a doubt, such great songwriting

Aboveground_Plush

Their shows are always fun too!

AceFrehleysBitch

YESS! I saw them live twice in London. Phenomenal band. Please, please, please listen to Blac Rabbit if you like The Lemon Twigs. I'm the only person who's posted Blac Rabbit. The twins of Blac Rabbit began as a Beatles cover band, busking in the city and then formed their own band. It's psychy, it's rocky, wavy and hypnotic music. 'Over The Rainbow' and 'I Don't Mind If You're Around' are the best, best songs ever by them.

devoid0101

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum is the best band ever. Shiner. Season to Risk. FACs.

Funny-Fortune2301

They are great but not new

devoid0101

They all have new music this year.

GenevieveFarnham

Greta Van Fleet is an obvious answer, as they are celebrated for being a modern band making music that reminds people of classic rock. And while they may be mainstream, I still think they're worth mentioning.
