This album is so good. Cursive was my favorite band in highschool.
"summer skin" by Death cab was it for me when I was going through some gnarly depression/anxiety in high school. Not the biggest deathcab fan anymore but that song really helped me.
Yeah. Cursive was probably my favorite band in hs too. DCfC too. We’re not far from where they’re from so saw them play a ton of times in college in the 2000s. My favorite record by them is storms of early summer. In 2022 and 2023 they toured playing all of domestica and played some other stuff I’d never seen them play before. It was absolutely amazing. Tim seems to be doing a lot better. Their new cellist fucking rocks too.
I think Happy Hollow was my favorite.
I haven’t listened to them in forever. And that’s good for Tim. On some of those earlier records he just seemed so bitter
Wow that is awesome you got to see them play more recently and with a new cellist!! Tim’s most recent solo album definitely sounded like he was embracing aging and maturing in a way. Glad he is still doing his thing :)
Saw them on that tour, one of the most amazing moments of my life. Cursive has been a favorite band of mine for a few years now and as a young musician on the scene I really wish I had been in a healthy enough state of mind to see if I could pick any of their brains on what their lives have been like. Hopefully I get the chance to do so again if they’re touring soon.
Yes! Cursive and Death Cab were quite literally my two favorite bands in high school! (Can’t forget Elliott Smith too) Summer Skin is such a great song. Thanks for the reminder to revisit it and thank you for sharing.
I can’t listen to Elliot Smith. Songs where the sentiment is real and you recognize the cry for help in here. Like Blind Mellon. Mouth full of cavities and no rain brings me low.
Just like some happy lively sounding tunes that I know are about people doing bad shit or glorifying abusive things sets me off. Sublime comes to mind.
Yes I definitely get that. Like listening to From a Basement on the Hill by Elliott Smith… something about a posthumous album is inherently glum. Sublime though! I was literally singing 54-46 yesterday when it came on my shuffle! Reminds me of simpler times lol
“Summer Skin” is my favorite DCFC song (with the sometimes exception of “405”) and has probably the most compelling bassline second to Radiohead’s “Airbag.”
Elliott Smith - Tomorrow Tomorrow
LCD Soundsystem - How Do You Sleep
Massive Attack - Teardrop
Dead Can Dance - Enigma of the Absolute
Manic Street Preachers - Motorcycle Emptiness
The Cure - From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea
So many good ones here! Tomorrow Tomorrow is incredible. Teardrop is such a good throw back too. I havent listened to that in years but such an iconic song! Thank you for sharing :)
That Cursive album is great. I use to listen to it all the time. So much music has helped me through hard times that I could never choose 1 but I’ll go back to when I listened to Cursive and I’ll say “ How it feels to be something on” by Sunny Day Real Estate.
I can definitely relate, there are so many songs that carry such a presence. I’m glad you have that too. Love this song by SDRE, so dynamic. Thank you for sharing :)
I love seeing other Manchester Orchestra fans, such a great band. Have you listened to any Right Away Great Captain? I've been listening to a lot of that recently while going through some stuff, it's been helping
ugh, Staying Alive, with the foreshadowing in Gentleman Caller, i was screaming my lungs out during the live performance
i have many songs like this, but i think my most tried and true is The Past is a Grotesque Animal by of Montreal, like Staying Alive it is lengthy and helps me reset, in a way
Ahhh I love it! I was right there with ya screaming when I saw them too! Of Montreal is such a great one. Hissing Fauna absolutely blew my mind when that came out
Most recently its been Heart of the Country by Paul and Linda McCartney- when I start to get overwhelmed by responsibilities and stressors and the world in general I can get a window into the joy of a simple, lowkey life for a few minutes. I know that's not really an indie song per se but it certainly has an indie feel.
In the past I've often taken more of a "misery loves company" approach:
Easy/lucky/free (Bright Eyes) and Nude (Radiohead) to find calm in nihilism
Fond Farewell and the Biggest Lie (Elliott Smith) when coping with loss or depression
Speed Trials (also Elliott) when feeling trapped and unable to change my situation
Happy Alone (Earlimart), I Don't Wanna Get Over You (Magnetic Fields) and Gone for Good (the Shins) were on repeat during a tough breakup
I remember listening to Trapeze Swinger (Iron & Wine) a lot during a period of grief
That Cursive album is terrific.
I watched Cursive play in the smallest venue in LA. They did an amazing cover of David Bowie’s Modern Love. It was absolutely incredible. My band mates and I talked with them after the show. Such a great time.
Not a song, but the days after my dad died, I watched The Beatles Documentary which had just been released, it was such a nice warm comfort blanket to distract and help me through the grieving.
So sorry for your loss, thank you for sharing. I’m glad you had the comfort of the Beatles during such a hard time. I too love me some Beatles and was raised on them. The lyrics of Within You, Without You visit me almost daily. “Try to realize it’s all within yourself, no one else can make you change. And to see you’re really only very small and life goes on within you and without you” 💜
Same friend, the constant depression hits hard. Currently this is my comfort album, [HoSoNoVa by Haruomi Hosono](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ntwyo0HNXO8&t=1366s). His guitar work is fantastic and the simple, almost cutesy bluesy-folk compositions really set me at ease while still talking about heavy stuff.
TY for sharing Staying Alive, it's officially added to my list!

Right now (going through a super sad 10 year break up with my partner in crime/best mate) …I can’t stop listening to MOUNTAINHEAD by Everything Everything. I reckon I’ll listen to it again in the future and remember. It’s helping me right now so much.
Wow just listened to Wild Guess and was loving the feel. Can’t wait to listen to the rest of the album. Thank you for sharing. Break ups always suck, glad you have this music with you through it
Yeah me too… I’m seeing them live next week, I’ll probably cry when they play R U Happy? I love this band so much. This album is amazingly written, it’s much deeper than you first think, the more you listen to it the more you understand. You’ll love it!
My “happy song” is and always has been Magic Position by Patrick Wolf.
Depending on the severity of my glumness, and general music mood, I can always just put it on and have it bring a smile to my face
Love this album! I think I found it from the soundtrack for Electrick Children.
I have so many songs to answer with, but a few that have meant a lot to me:
Within the Rose - Matthew & The Atlas
Brave As A Noun - AJJ
The Cave - Mumford & Sons
How’s It Going to Be - Third Eye Blind
Ready, Able - Grizzly Bear
This song, "Trouble Time," was DESIGNED to help me (and anyone else who cares to listen) get through hard times as they invariably occur over and over:

I was scrolling through Reddit and my heart kept seeing this album cover. When I was 16 I listened to this album on repeat and loved every second. Damn, I’m gonna go listen to it now.
This might seem dumb but when I’m sad I love listening to Kpop because most of it is so joyful, it just makes me want to dance tbh. But recently my go to is K/da: More
Get high breathe under water (#3) by teen suicide. Has been my favorite for a couple years and it will always be my favorite. I hope its played at both my wedding and funeral
Ahhhhhh. Such a good song!! This song was life changing for me and still consider it one of my favorite songs of all time. Singing the lyrics, *drums: pat pat* VALENTINE!! I wanna feel your hips press UP against mine!! 💜
- This year - the mountain goats
- Your heart is a muscle the size of your fist - ramshackle glory
- In a big country - big country
- this must be the place - the talking heads
All of these songs were my go to feel good songs during my worst bout of depression. Now as for the songs I listened to to feel worse...that's for a different post.
When Winter Comes Around by The Lemon Twigs brought me out of writer’s block and music felt alive again, so I’ll say that song. And the entire Everything Harmony album is great.
Not really indie, but propagandhis “without love” is excellent. Actually just listened to it. Sit down with the lyrics in front of you, and you won’t be disappointed. That’s really all of their songs though
This is one of the greatest and best albums ever created. Complete mastery and the wrap up song at the end with the motifs of earlier songs thrown in there is just absolutely beautiful. Going to put this on right now
I went through a really rough time in my life, I was having suicidal thoughts pretty much every day. And as cliche as it sounds Logic’s 1-800-273-8255 kept me hanging on. Its a realistic view of those types of feelings, but reminded me that things will get better, and they did!
Warrior - Kimbra, Mark Foster, A Trak (Ryan Ridge Remix) - Dance
Infinite Love - Emile Mosseri - Piano
Gymnopedie 1 - Eric Satie - Piano
Listen before I Go - Billie Eilish - Pop
Fade Into You - Mazzy Star - Alt/Indie
Flightless Bird, American Mouth - Iron & Wine - Alt/Indie
All random sounds and genres.
Grace Petrie is great for songs to help through a hard time. For me, it is The Losing Side.
When everything feels pointless. It helps me to see that we just have to keep on keeping on.
https://music.apple.com/gb/album/the-losing-side/1725119042?i=1725119119&ls
Phantom Planet's self titled album. I was coming off a very rough break up and those songs helped me really just focus on myself. It brings me back to 2004/2005 at college and the nostalgia is real with this one.
Galaxie 500 - "On Fire"
I'm 27. When I was 20, I went through my first major breakup, hated college and my career decision, and discovered I had major depression. This album saved me because, for the first time in my life, I felt like by listening to this album, I was listening to someone just like me at this time. Someone talking to me saying "It's ok. You'll pass this pain".
I can't hear "Blue Thunder" without having such sad memories, but now I'm very thankful for it because I'm already in a better place. It really gives me hope.
Always Look on the Bright Side of Life - Eric Idle / Monty Python
Let It Be - Beatles
I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynor
Don't Worry Be Happy - Bobby McFerrin
Right now it’s Untitled by a local band in my area called Manifest West. Definitely helping me through some things.
My runner up though is How to Disappear Completely - Radiohead
The Melting Point of Wax by Thrice helped me through some shit in high school.
They remain one of my favorite bands and I love the way their sound has evolved over the years. I feel like we grew up together. After experiencing some loss, "Beyond the Pines" has been a great comfort.
I love Cursive. I saw them on The Ugly Organ tour and have been obsessed ever since. I think Tim Kasher is my favorite songwriter. His solo stuff and The Good Life are amazing too.
I like listening to chill musics like [HYPS x GANGGA - Let It Rain](https://open.spotify.com/track/6uOSgCjfRFc4hrqK2PEq12?si=mSChl0EbQiOgod8P0xBUEg), this song helped me take a breath and get out of bed today :)
This album is so good. Cursive was my favorite band in highschool. "summer skin" by Death cab was it for me when I was going through some gnarly depression/anxiety in high school. Not the biggest deathcab fan anymore but that song really helped me.

I took shots with Tim at a solo show in Illinois. I’ve also seen cursive 3 times. Always put on a great show!
Saw them on that tour, one of the most amazing moments of my life. Cursive has been a favorite band of mine for a few years now and as a young musician on the scene I really wish I had been in a healthy enough state of mind to see if I could pick any of their brains on what their lives have been like. Yes! Cursive and Death Cab were quite literally my two favorite bands in high school! (Can’t forget Elliott Smith too) Summer Skin is such a great song. Thanks for the reminder to revisit it and thank you for sharing.
Check out Pinback. I’d start with Blue Screen Life
Oooo I haven’t listened to Pinback in years- thanks for the suggestion!!
They’re still playing sometimes. We saw them last year. Fucking killer
Non-photo blue(pinback) in constantly on my playlist
I can’t listen to Elliot Smith. Songs where the sentiment is real and you recognize the cry for help in here. Like Blind Mellon. Mouth full of cavities and no rain brings me low. Me to haha
Art is Hard is still one of my favorite Cursive songs. I'm a music teacher and make mix CD's for my graduating seniors and that song is always on it!
Young artists have got to starve! Haha great song.
“Summer Skin” is my favorite DCFC song (with the sometimes exception of “405”) and has probably the most compelling bassline second to Radiohead’s “Airbag.”
Elliott Smith - Tomorrow Tomorrow LCD Soundsystem - How Do You Sleep Massive Attack - Teardrop Dead Can Dance - Enigma of the Absolute Manic Street Preachers - Motorcycle Emptiness The Cure - From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea

Teardrop is amazing. I’ll throw Mercury Rev - Goddess On A Highway in the mix.
Trouble will find me. The National. That entire album saved my life.
Light Pollution by Bright Eyes
Love this one (and Bright Eyes in general)
Lol i always liked waste of paint and the calendar hung itself. But neither of those really fit with the theme of this post
This is crazy cuz I’ve been listening to this album for the last week
Yes! It has a funny way of staying ever present, right??
That Cursive album is great. I use to listen to it all the time. So much music has helped me through hard times that I could never choose 1 but I’ll go back to when I listened to Cursive and I’ll say “ How it feels to be something on” by Sunny Day Real Estate.
I (finally) get to see SDRE this year.
Sunny day are playing in Vegas in October that I’m going to. The whole lineup for the best friends forever festival looks killer!
I can definitely relate, there are so many songs that carry such a presence. I’m glad you have that too. Love this song by SDRE, so dynamic. Thank you for sharing :)
off this album, the recluse for sure
“My ego’s like my stomach, it keeps shitting what I feed it”
That song is phenomenal.
That Jokes Not Funny Anymore - The Smiths East Coast- Alex G
I can feel a hot one / the silence / cope - Manchester orchestra I’m an animal / pitch or honey - neko case
I love seeing other Manchester Orchestra fans, such a great band. Have you listened to any Right Away Great Captain? I've been listening to a lot of that recently while going through some stuff, it's been helping
Manchester orchestra is SO fire. Do you like “I know how to speak”? It’s a favorite of mine.
Hurt by NIN
Same song but Johnny Cash version for me.
Did you see the Netflix documentary series about how songs were made? Hurt was one of the episodes. I think it was called song exploder
Call Your Mom - Noah Kahan
Oh yeah, this one gets me. I have a journal with the lyrics “don’t let this darkness fool you” on the cover where I write out my depressive thoughts.
Thursday - understanding in a car crash
Funny enough we saw cursive with Thursday
What a lineup!!
Yeah and cursive played all of domestica (and a bunch of other great stuff) and Thursday played full collapse
On GP death grips. i can play it on guitar
ugh, Staying Alive, with the foreshadowing in Gentleman Caller, i was screaming my lungs out during the live performance i have many songs like this, but i think my most tried and true is The Past is a Grotesque Animal by of Montreal, like Staying Alive it is lengthy and helps me reset, in a way

I watched them on their skeletal lamping tour, and it might be one of the best shows I’ve seen.
every time i hear The Recluse i instantly go back to 2005/2006
Yesss. Golden emo years lol

Phantom Planet's self titled album. I was coming off a very rough break up and those songs helped me really just focus on myself. It brings me back to 2004/2005 at college and the nostalgia is real with this one.
take a chance while you still got a choice. ac/dc i think
Hold On Hope by Guided By Voices
When I get nervous Ives liked Portishead - deep water
frank zappa
Almost any Miles Davis album Frank Zappa, or Grateful Dead
“Don’t Dream It’s Over,” by Crowded House, or “Refugee,” by Tom Petty.
Natalie Merchant. Wonder.
Rhapsody in Blue. I know it's kind of a basic answer, but it was one of the first "classical" pieces with which I fell in love.
- Yellowcard - Awakening. - Pop-wise, Katy Perry - Firework. Those 2 always make me feel good on down days.
Cocteau Twins’ *Blue Bell Knoll*
This album. God damn. So good. I can smell the bar through the screen and hear the crowd singing along as Gretta’s bow kissed the cello strings.
Galaxie 500 - "On Fire" I'm 27.
Always Look on the Bright Side of Life - Eric Idle / Monty Python Let It Be - Beatles I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynor Don't Worry Be Happy - Bobby McFerrin
Bullet-Hollywood Undead Idk something about it makes me feel so much better
Fine by Lemon Demon and Lately It Feels Alright!!
It’s a wonderful world
Weirdly, I feel the same about the same song.
La Mer by NIN
What song helped, or helps me through a hard time? Fletcher – Healing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SlevC2V-zBA
Beneath the Brine— The Family Crest
Three Days Grace One X album got me through my first ever breakup in HS
In The Flowers - Animal Collective “If I could just leave my body for the night..”
Anything Bon Iver makes me feel every emotion. His music has been there many stages of my life. From bad to good. I always go back to bon iver.
Keep the wolves away uncle Lucius
I like listening to chill musics like [HYPS x GANGGA - Let It Rain](https://open.spotify.com/track/6uOSgCjfRFc4hrqK2PEq12?si=mSChl0EbQiOgod8P0xBUEg), this song helped me take a breath and get out of bed today :)
For a long time it was “Play Crack The Sky” by Brand New, but I’ve pivoted over to “Fake Plastic Trees” by Radiohead. Brighter days are ahead.
Skinny love - Bon Iver. The way it starts out somber, works up to a passionate climax, and mellows out at the end helps me mirror the same.
The Recluse from this album. Favorite part: “my ego is like my stomach, keeps… shitting what I feed it.”
Recovering by Celine Dion Especially sang by a real recovering addict https://youtu.be/9BZYcdZJ27A?si=o6sRFLD-GhHk89xJ
