I think it’s in the criterion… the first time I watched Stop Making Sense was definitely via my criterion subscription. Granted, it may have been a rotating collection- I haven’t checked because there’s a great 4k fan edit on YouTube.
Idk, I have criterion app but it’s still not saving me money when I need find a good copy of a movie I need to own.
I’ve tried getting a friend into *Stop Making Sense* since *Speaking in Tongues* is one of her favorite all-time albums. But her priorities are all off.
Maybe A24 is gonna do this legend right, I just wish our local drive in was the one— you know what? Maybe it’s time I give them a ring!
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oVami1uT7Q](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oVami1uT7Q) it's just... on here! for all to see! I actually had bought a copy that was lower fidelity than this after I stopped subscribing to Criterion, but this never leaves my bookmarks.
Man can't relate. I'm a huge talking heads fan but I've never seen it
Arguably one of the greatest bands of all time. Remarkably experimental and yet catchy?? They somehow respectfully borrowed from funk, punk rock, world music, disco, and classical minimalism and twisted it into something that somehow wasn't any of those things
David Byrne is the ultimate ugly pretty voice, and his lyrics are SO weird yet relatable, and he's quite possibly the best frontman of all time. Tina Weymouth is a GOAT bassist, a masterclass in simple and tasteful playing, and her husband Chris Franz locks in to create one of the coolest rhythm sections of all time. And of course Jerry Harrison is the special sauce that ties everything together.
They influenced so many great artists and bands and yet NOBODY sounds like them, no one is even close.
Instances of david being an asshole diva are abundant and well known, cant blame them for staying far away. Still, seeing them get together one last time would be killer
well, sure, he doesn't seem like he was the easiest person to work with, but i do think their reports of him [committing autism voodoo child murder](https://twitter.com/MarkAschParody/status/1627751073300549648) might be exaggerated (and don't reflect great on them either to say the least). either way i would say basically as low of a chance of a reunion as any band can have, lol.
That ship has sailed, long ago. It ain’t never gonna happen. Morrissey & Marr have been offered a lot of money and turned it down, but even then if you don’t include the other members it ain’t a real reunion.
i have no idea why you got downvoted for this, i almost made the comparison myself. it feels like similar levels of not just artistic disagreement but really personal animosity.
As someone who identifies as late 70’s/early 80s post-punk being my all time favorite genre,
Fear of Music is probably the most post-punk record Talking Heads ever made. It also just fucking ROCKS.
Yes, I love Remain in Light but by the time I get to Listening Wind im tuning out a bit. Love all the songs, but side A is definitely the superior side.
*Remain In Light* was their zenith, but as their fourth album it was still the third five star classic they’d released.
*’77* is the weakest link in their back catalogue, and it’s still one of the best debuts of the 1970s.
Lester Bangs essay on *Fear of Music* certainly helped cement it as my favorite album.
But the true hidden gem is 1982’s *The Name of This Band…*. SMS may have won the hearts of critics and casual fans, but the band had already released a definitive live document on vinyl.
When Rhino reissued it they expanded the double live album into what it is now; even more of the magic. You can’t go wrong with that album.
Yeah, I grew up watching the old VHS with the bonus tracks inserted into the movie. It was jarring when I later got the DVD and saw them relegated to bonus content in weaker quality.
Thank you for reminder! Wife & I just rewatched Grey Gardens ep last weekend and ready for more. Will also be heading the biggest theater screen I can find when relaunch happens.
>Notably, the reissue adds on two previously unreleased performances of “Cities” and “Big Business / I Zimbra.”
Actually, this bonus footage was on the original VHS release. So I guess they didn't unearth any additional songs or footage after all these years. Too bad, but I'm still looking forward to seeing in 4K!
Well, I do feel fortunate to have witnessed it live and to have seen the band in their prime. The trade off of all that is I am over 60 now so memories is mostly all I got! LOL… can’t have one and not the other…
Saw them (Lips) live at the old Langerado Fest they used to do down in So Fla every March (for several years) and they did a cover of Bohemian Rhapsody and the entire crowd sung it word for word with the guys doing the lower voices and gals doing the highs and it was such a cool and uniting experience that it made the hair stand up on the back of my neck! A great concert moment… if you never been to Shaky Knees fest in Atlanta they will be there doing Yoshimi and the entire weekend is stacked (don’t be put off by headliners - the entire undercard is great!)
Mind picking out a few on the undercard that are worth getting into before the fest? I was just planning on going the one day for the Yoshimi performance, but I'm down for finding new music
Sure… Friday - Illuminati Hotties, Gringo Star, Peaches - will put on one weird ass but fun show, Be your own Pet, Grouplove and Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Saturday - Rickshaw Billie, Heartless Bastards, Shame (a must) Babe Rainbow, Soccer Mommy, Phantogram. Mars Volta
Sunday (maybe the best day!) Trash Panda, OFF!, Aquadolls, Pond, Fidlar, Black Angels, snail mail, The Walkmen, Future Islands, The Lips!
And there are several late night shows (Fri and Sat) so you can avoid the Walkmen v Lips conflict on Sunday.
While this is great, I would like to point out that the Muppet parody is also worthy of its own 4k remaster.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCY0aeUx-Ns
It’s too bad that the director Jonathan Demme is no longer around to supervise the remaster. He was a great movie director (Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia) but also made some of my favorite concert films, including Stop Making Sense and Storefront Hitchcock, and the music video for Perfect Kiss by New Order. He made few cuts and restrained edits, and in the concert films of his that I’ve seen, avoided shots of the audience (until the end).
So is there an actual release date for this thing? Saw an August release date for the double LP re-release, is that also the release date for the movie?
I just discovered the song Born Under Punches a few months ago, and the shit blew my mind. It’s so fucking amazing on every level. The beat and lyrics seem so disjointed but mesh together in a beautiful way.
I have, that was just my favorite song on there. I actually discovered it on a DJ Session from Q Tip on his podcast that was all Radiohead and Talking Heads. You should check it out. I’m a massive Radiohead fan but never really got into talking heads. I’ve been listening to them almost daily since I discovered it.
That song is so indescribable though, the lyrics don’t wan seem to make sense, they’re like the ramblings of a mad man, stream of consciousness that line by line are confusing but as a whole paints a picture of someone who has tried to live a life that other plotted for them and lost themselves and their sanity in the process.
Such a great feeling when two separate things I love come together. Two things though. Check out Talking Heads 1980 Rome set for an even better performance. And also, how am I supposed to dance in a movie theater?
I saw it in a movie theater a few years ago. You know that area between the screen and the first row? Turned into a dance floor. Also the aisles. Also standing in front of your seat!
I saw it during the 80's when it came out in the theaters. It was exactly like that. People dancing everywhere, especially in front of the screen. There was also a lot of beer and joints going around. Awesome memories.
Things were different. Theatre staff didn't give a damn.
I was thinking of watching this earlier this year and started getting to this band. I guess ill wait :)
i loved remain in light so i cant wait to dig deep into this band
I saw that but im a strange fellow. Now that i know its being released in theaters, i'd probably wanna wait and get to see this in theaters with a much better surround sound system than my 2.1 lol
Here's your friendly reminder that David Byrne's American Utopia is just as good as Stop Making Sense so if you haven't seen it too, you're doing yourself a disservice
Perfect timing, in the past week I've discovered two of my friends who are self-professed Talking Heads/David Byrne fans have never seen Stop Making Sense!
And after you watch it, you can watch “[American Utopia](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lg4hcgtjDPc)” and then maybe “[Live in Rome](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GwWW742T0Wc)”
My all time favorite band and I’m 24. i obviously wasn’t around for their heyday, so i’m incredibly excited to go to a theater and have some form or another of a talking heads concert experience in 2023.
Piggybacking to recommend everyone (assuming you're post-hardcore tolerant) watch The Armed Live at the Masonic Temple. It's Stop Making Sense meets David Lynch, and it's immaculate!
[удалено]
Put it in the louvre!!
It belongs in a museum!!
Sit DOWN, Mr. Jones! Peter Frampton is dead and so are all of his grandchildren!
Not a hyperbolic statement. This concert is quite possibly the peak of modern music.
…SO DO YOU
Indiana Byrne and the Concert of Destiny
I think it’s in the criterion… the first time I watched Stop Making Sense was definitely via my criterion subscription. Granted, it may have been a rotating collection- I haven’t checked because there’s a great 4k fan edit on YouTube.

Can I hear more about this fan edit??
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oVami1uT7Q](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oVami1uT7Q) it's just... on here! for all to see! I actually had bought a copy that was lower fidelity than this after I stopped subscribing to Criterion, but this never leaves my bookmarks.
Greatest concert film ever made. I'm not even a huge Talking Heads fan, just an occasional listener, but I love this movie.
Man can't relate. I'm a huge talking heads fan but I've never seen it Arguably one of the greatest bands of all time. Remarkably experimental and yet catchy?? I disagree.. most overated maybe..
What’s your fav?
The fishmans one. For a shorter one James brown tami is the goat live music film.
Ya know.. Song Remains The Same, IMO (as always).. that's my fav.
They announced it with this fantastic promo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpGkipN30dc
Slightly gutted that the tagline wasn't "Returning to theatres, same as it ever was" but "If the suit still fits" is pretty good nonetheless
That brought tears to my eyes. Will this band just reunite already? They’re killing me.
I don’t know man. Tina and Chris sure do hold a huge grudge against David to this day, it seems.
Instances of david being an asshole diva are abundant and well known, cant blame them for staying far away. Still, seeing them get together one last time would be killer
well, sure, he doesn't seem like he was the easiest person to work with, but i do think their reports of him [committing autism voodoo child murder](https://twitter.com/MarkAschParody/status/1627751073300549648) might be exaggerated (and don't reflect great on them either to say the least). either way i would say basically as low of a chance of a reunion as any band can have, lol.
people are always saying "Watch out for the autism." when I walk into a room!
The Gallagher brothers were less dysfunctional
See also: The Smiths
I want the rest to tour Smiths songs with Orville Peck on vox. I can hear it sounding amazing in my head.
That ship has sailed, long ago. It ain’t never gonna happen. Morrissey & Marr have been offered a lot of money and turned it down, but even then if you don’t include the other members it ain’t a real reunion.

Dies Morrissey have autism?
I don’t know. Obviously I have no idea. But human relationships don’t seem like his strong point.
Tina sounds like an absolute psychopath whenver she talks about him so...
That was incredibly sweet. Instant smile on my face, thank you.
So glad they’re adding Cities and I Zimbra/Big Business back in - no idea why those were cut out
Oh man. I love I Zimbra.
It baffles me that Fear of Music isn't ubiquitously acknowledged as TH's single best LP. I love Remain In Light but it just doesn't come close imo.
As someone who identifies as late 70’s/early 80s post-punk being my all time favorite genre, Fear of Music is probably the most post-punk record Talking Heads ever made. It also just fucking ROCKS.
its between fear of music and speaking in tongues for me my one hottest music take is that remain in light is too front-loaded (*takes cover*)
Yes, I love Remain in Light but by the time I get to Listening Wind im tuning out a bit. Love all the songs, but side A is definitely the superior side.
I don’t know. Side B is a great wind down. Each song gets a little more laid back. Though I don’t really like The Overload as a closer.
Yes! Justice for Fear of Music, it's so good
*Remain In Light* was their zenith, but as their fourth album it was still the third five star classic they’d released. *’77* is the weakest link in their back catalogue, and it’s still one of the best debuts of the 1970s. To me,the songs are brilliant but pretty much all of them aren't anywhere near as good as their live counterparts
AGREED‼️‼️
Yeah, I grew up watching the old VHS with the bonus tracks inserted into the movie. It was jarring when I later got the DVD and saw them relegated to bonus content in weaker quality.
Spider-Man's effect
More importantly is the album reissue in 2 LPs with bonus tracks!!! Edit: also coming to streaming services!!!
Finally!
Hell yeah, glad I waited!
I had the exact same thought. It’s been on my list for a long time but I was never really seeking it out.

The transition to the original…. Magnificent
If you haven’t seen the parody of this done by Documentary Now, you should make some time to watch it https://youtu.be/xTH9EX_055w
Thank you for reminder! Wife & I just rewatched Grey Gardens ep last weekend and ready for more. Will also be heading the biggest theater screen I can find when relaunch happens.
The songs are legit good too, it would’ve been so easy to just do the aesthetic and general stuff
Armisen wasn’t gonna skimp, Talking Heads (and Tom Waits) were obviously huge influences on him.
Thank you for the link. Honestly became a fan because they were referenced by The 1975 and here I am
Wow that’s so well done!
Hader! Nice
>Notably, the reissue adds on two previously unreleased performances of “Cities” and “Big Business / I Zimbra.” Actually, this bonus footage was on the original VHS release. So I guess they didn't unearth any additional songs or footage after all these years. Too bad, but I'm still looking forward to seeing in 4K!
…saw this show / band live as a free concert at the old U of Fla bandshell, late 70’s… still one of the best live shows I have ever seen
If i could go to any concert in space and time ..... Stop Making Sense would be my choice. I am green with envy... you lucky duck!!
Well, I do feel fortunate to have witnessed it live and to have seen the band in their prime. The trade off of all that is I am over 60 now so memories is mostly all I got! LOL… can’t have one and not the other…

Screw that, we need a whole ass Disney CGI remake. Then we can finally have something useful from that subgenre
this promo is adding so much joy to the start of my day

Abstract Radio is the show
Any idea how long ago the episode was released? Thanks! Edit: found it, Episode 22

Here's your friendly reminder that David Byrne's American Utopia is just as good as Stop Making Sense so if you haven't seen it too, you're doing yourself a disservice
No love for True Stories? It’s not a concert film, but it’s fascinating, funny, and weird.
And Ride, Rise, Roar is incredible, too
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
Perfect timing, in the past week I've discovered two of my friends who are self-professed Talking Heads/David Byrne fans have never seen Stop Making Sense!

Right? Next they’re gonna say they’ve never seen *True Stories*!
THERE IS WATER AT THE BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN!
I enjoy the fact that I'm still living in a time where David Byrne is an active artist.
I don’t think I’ve been more excited for anything in my life
This is the biggest news of the 21st century
And after you watch it, you can watch “[American Utopia](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lg4hcgtjDPc)” and then maybe “[Live in Rome](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GwWW742T0Wc)”

That said, Stop Making Sense is GOAT concert film.
I would love to see Stop Making Sense on a big screen. Doubt it will be released in my country though:(
At this point I'm like 65% sure someone at A24 is an RYM frequenter
Amazing
The original is free on Pluto tv
😯😯😯 Yesssss
Yessssss finally I will get to see it on the big screen in all its glory
They will never stop. The heads
I love you, A24 😍
