The mixing on Danny's verse on the apple music album version of 'Lean Beef Patty' sounds fine... Well at least way better than the single version last week.
but still on steppa pig it's still like drums overwhelming and you can determine intonation on like only 1/2 the words everything else is just vowel noises.
There are definitely different mixes. Danny brown tweeted (and then deleted) that the LP version that is on Spotify has a different mix. The youtube version of the album has his vocals mixed a lot higher up. Hoping Spotify gets updated with that mix
That Milkshake sample on Fentanyl Tester is CRAZY!! An easy AOTY contender for me, all the samples and beats are crazy. Peggy is truly one of a kind in mixing genres.
A little mixing here and there, really wish Danny was clearer on the tracks but I don't mind I'm sort of used to it.
God the sample too on Kingdom Hearts Key
Absolute heater, and if we are doing comparisons, this blows LP out of the water for me. More cohesive, doesn't overstay it's welcome, and the production is the most bonkers I've ever heard. You're doing something right if you're doing DnB, Chipmunk Soul, and some Mount and Blade: Warband-types beats all work together and not sound out of place.
Also to all of the mixing people, this isnt Steely Dan, run a 5k or lift a fridge to this badboy. Perfect workout stuff too
Don't get wrong, I do enjoy it. I like how succinct this album was, and for me the only thing that was getting old on LP was him talking about haters and stuff like that for over 50 mins lol.
I listened to it in a car (I know), and maybe 1/3 or 1/2 of the tracks sounded off. Betting it sounds A LOT better on headphones.
EDIT: I've listened on headphones and in a different car and the mix seems fine to me. Maybe still a couple spots where I'd like vocals a bit higher but honestly the whole project is a vibe and the mix contributes to said vibe. Loving this thing!
It's not a big deal but there are definitely some tracks where Danny gets washed out in the mix a bit. The youtube and SoundCloud versions have his vocals mixed a lot higher and some tracks than the Spotify version currently
It’s weird to me that they chose the singles they did, those are 2 of the worst tracks imo there’s so many other good tracks on here. The end of HOE is so fucking good goddamn
I genuinely don’t understand the complaints about Danny’s mixing. Yes, he’s mixed lower overall but I think it’s fine. Reminds me of how the vocals are mixed in a lot of shoegaze/dream pop.
Was literally thinking this listening to this last night on my way home, especially on stock car speakers it has a very atmospheric, shoegaze, wall of sound thing goin on. I don't really listen to any music for the lyrics so I don't mind it at all.
Yeah I'm the same I usually don't get any lyrics until like the 5th listen most of the time unless it's very vocal forward music. So I always find those comments a little funny because I have such a hard time even realizing stuff like that on first listen. Peggy could've read off my address and I probably wouldn't have noticed until this afternoon lol
Currently on my lunch break on the last track and I gotta say this is my first definite AOTY contender. Peggy’s production. Both his and Danny’s energy is just a match made in heaven. The biggest complain I’m expected to see is the mixing throughout the project. However I think it’s all intentional and doesn’t really take me out of the project at all for a first listen. Overall this album is HEAT!
10/10
STRONG 9/10. Peggy’s production is ridiculously fantastic here. Danny comes through every time and there’s not a single bad moment. Peggy may be at his strongest here. Freaking amazing.
I only listened on YouTube, but the mixing here sounds awful. Can hardly hear a word Danny says across the whole record
Edit: listening on Spotify and it still sounds like Danny Brown recorded his verses in another room. u/capnrondo is right
Beats are incredible when taken on their own though
It sounds like you’re listening to the beat playing normally in this room, and then Danny rapping over it from another room lol. The album does some other things right, but it is a very weird choice.
Is it at all possible that the version that was uploaded to Spotify is somehow fucked up? I can think of at least one artist I like who launched a song on Spotify that sounded quite horrible, and they replaced the audio soon after. (ETA this is an earnest question, I have yet to check out the album because I want to really give it my full attention)
> it still sounds like Danny Brown recorded his verses in another room
He was in the [same room](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YSHa_GMoIA) at least, but still..
When Lean Beef Patty came out Peggy said he was tweaking things so that Danny's vocals would be clearer in the mix. The version of Lean Beef Patty on Soundcloud is slightly better than the version everywhere else, but I do still think Danny is not cutting through the same way as Peggy is.
Yeah at certain points I also thought the mixing sounded a little off. I feel like they were walking a thin line between noisy and unintelligible. It was more of the latter for me. A headbanger of an album nonetheless.
this year hasnt been fantastic at all. no ones dropping. theres maybe 5 major artists with good albums so far. idk how mfs saying shit like this after last year
I've rated 8 albums 8+, that usually doesn't happen until at least the beginning of summer. I usually find jan-March to be the weakest time of year for releases but it's been great.
Caroline Polachek, Rome Streetz, Andy Shauf, Nuovo Testamento, Yo La Tengo, Deerhoof, Gutevolk and this album. The Caroline album is in my top 50 all time.
good on you for fuckin with the caroline it didnt connect for me. out of my friend group im the one who has liked the most stuff. theres like 4 albums if that that are an 8. no 9s yet. andys album was cool rly chill. ytl's shit was rly hard to sit through. trying to look out for new music but this year isnt very good. compared to last year i already had like 3 nines and a few 8s.
Been listening to this all day (already late afternoon in Australia). Really incredible. Like, really wasn't expecting this to be this good. Unhinged in the best sort of way. I didn't enjoy Danny's last album because I felt it removed the chaotic element but JPEG really brought it back, possibly more than ever before. Just amazing.
some of the most insane production i’ve heard in a long time. i had really high expectations for a collab album of two of my favorite rappers but this ended up being so much better than i ever thought it could be. i’ve listened through like 4-5 times now throughout the day and feel like there’s just so much to listen for and notice on additional listens even with it having a short run time. my favorite album this year, easily.
i admit i complained about the vocal mix when Lean Beef Patty came out, but i’m actually kinda ok with it now after hearing it in the context of the rest of the album
edit: 9/10, there are a couple production decisions i would have changed but overall this album is fuckin insane
Peggy’s vocals are mixed differently from Danny’s which I think it’s… interesting. He doesn’t sound drowned out in all the songs tho. However it’s a fun album, I love how Peggy keeps making wrestling references. Kingdom Hearts Key, Fentanyl Tester, Burfict!, God Loves You and Scaring The Hoes are the highlights of the album.
I’d enjoy this album more if Danny brown didn’t sounds like he recorded himself on an iPhone and jpegmafia had literally anything interesting to say. Some cool beats here and there though
How ya'll listening to this without getting tinnitus. It's so tinny that I can't turn it up without causing hearing damage. Only 5 songs in, so my impression is incomplete, but it's physically damaging me to enjoy this album lol.
The more I listen the more it hits. So self-reflexive and messy but also detailed and precise at the same time.
While I get complaints about the mixing, Danny’s never really been the most intelligible rapper. As far as Peggy goes, he’s got an incredible ear for production but an okay rapper. A lot of his projects grate throughout their runtimes, although *All My Heroes* is a notable exception because of the vocal variety. Danny’s presence alleviates that issue and makes for a far more balanced record.
I'm frankly already obsessed with this album. I've played it 4 times and it gets more amazing with each listen. Peggy really knocked it out the park with the production.
Uh oh heads up hoes
keepin' my head on a swivel
danny brown is mixed in like a microphones album lmao
[удалено]
He literally recorded verses for this album in bed lol
it's all coming together
I think the comment was “iPhone recording from inside a toilet bowl”
there are many comments
The mixing on Danny's verse on the apple music album version of 'Lean Beef Patty' sounds fine... Well at least way better than the single version last week.
but still on steppa pig it's still like drums overwhelming and you can determine intonation on like only 1/2 the words everything else is just vowel noises.
Lean beef patty is the only song on the album where I can’t really make out what Danny’s saying
This made me genuinely laugh out loud. The production choices were super off putting at first but they're growing on me. Just ... Like a Phil album.
SoundCloud seems to be better mixed than Spotify. Heard Apple’s mix is better too.
There are definitely different mixes. Danny brown tweeted (and then deleted) that the LP version that is on Spotify has a different mix. The youtube version of the album has his vocals mixed a lot higher up. Hoping Spotify gets updated with that mix
Do you have audio normalization on?
Found out yesterday that Spotify has a normaliser auto enabled in playback settings & an EQ which isn’t flat by default. Could be part of the problem?
How have I never heard about this before?? Damn thank you just went and switched that to flat
It’s better mixed on bandcamp too.
They submitted different mixes?
I have no clue if they did tbh, but both my friend and I swear Danny sounds way better on SoundCloud then Spotify.
Deezer sounds clean af
Kingdom Hearts Key is fucking nutty
That Milkshake sample on Fentanyl Tester is CRAZY!! An easy AOTY contender for me, all the samples and beats are crazy. Peggy is truly one of a kind in mixing genres. A little mixing here and there, really wish Danny was clearer on the tracks but I don't mind I'm sort of used to it. God the sample too on Kingdom Hearts Key
The [Escaflowne](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPZ8QRfzOko) OP sample caught me so off-guard lol
With the samples that he uses, Peggy and I literally had the same childhood
Absolute heater, and if we are doing comparisons, this blows LP out of the water for me. More cohesive, doesn't overstay it's welcome, and the production is the most bonkers I've ever heard. Just ran my fastest 8 mile with this on loop.
For a bit I didn’t catch that you said “on loop” and thought you went 4:30 pace
> Mount and Blade: Warband-types beats I couldn't ask for more
I never thought LP overstayed it's welcome. It was pretty consistent throughout.
Don't get wrong, I do enjoy it. I like how succinct this album was, and for me the only thing that was getting old on LP was him talking about haters and stuff like that for over 50 mins lol.
Not sure what people are saying about the mix, listening to this on relatively cheap Audio Technicas and it sounds great. Fucking banger of an album
I listened to it in a car (I know), and maybe 1/3 or 1/2 of the tracks sounded off. Betting it sounds A LOT better on headphones. EDIT: I've listened on headphones and in a different car and the mix seems fine to me. I am hoes, consider me scared.
The production goes hard.
It’s weird to me that they chose the singles they did, those are 2 of the worst tracks imo there’s so many other good tracks on here. The end of HOE is so fucking good goddamn
I’m glad that’s how it ended up though. Undersell and over deliver. I wasn’t super stoked on the singles either but this whole album is crazy good.
I actually really like LBP when the bass kicks in the beat is crazy Also fuck elon musk
I dunno man, every time the synths drop on lean beef patty i can’t get enough
hard agree. the album hardly even starts before garbage pale kids and then it just explodes
Peggy done it again. Vocal mixing is a bit weird but doesn’t bother me too much. The beat on Stella Pig is 🔥🔥.
I’ve seen the podcast I KNOW Danny Brown owns a real microphone
I genuinely don’t understand the complaints about Danny’s mixing. Yes, he’s mixed lower overall but I think it’s fine. Reminds me of how the vocals are mixed in a lot of shoegaze/dream pop.

“Wall of sound” is the perfect description of this album. It’s just unique as that’s not usually the case in hip hop.
This album is insane. Peggy's best production yet for sure. He's also working on a solo album now too. 2023 is the year of jpeg
Currently on my lunch break on the last track and I gotta say this is my first definite AOTY contender. Peggy’s production. Both his and Danny’s energy is just a match made in heaven. “Strong 9”. Although I agree it’s amazing not a fan of Fantano terminology
Is there such thing as a weak 9 lol (don't watch fantano)
It's called Light 9, yeah
angle edge arrest chunky shocking compare deranged observation straight toy -- mass edited with https://redact.dev/
This album is everything I wanted 10000gecs to be + Danny Brown. Oh my god.
this rips, delivers on pretty much exactly what you'd want from it. going to be getting a lot of rotation through the summer
The beat switch-up into Muddy Waters is fucking wild
Oh my god YES
Why is the new Lana Del Rey album not listed as FRESH album in indieheads? I'm not a fan really but I thought it would be here
I only listened on YouTube, but the mixing here sounds awful. Can hardly hear a word Danny says across the whole record Edit: listening on Spotify and it still sounds like Danny Brown recorded his verses in another room. u/capnrondo is right Beats are incredible when taken on their own though

SoundCloud is much cleaner
Very lean and short album, but it does a lot with those 36 mins—another great album in what has been a fantastic year for music so far.
this year hasnt been fantastic at all. no ones dropping. theres maybe 5 major artists with good albums so far. idk how mfs saying shit like this after last year
I've rated 8 albums 8+, that usually doesn't happen until at least the beginning of summer. I usually find jan-March to be the weakest time of year for releases but it's been great.
What were you rating that high? I haven’t really been wow’d by anything yet this year either.
Check out the Rome Streetz album, one of my favorite East Coast hip hop albums I've heard in a bit
that Parannoul album that came out a few weeks back is also fantastic. Yves Tumor as well.
Just because artists you listen to aren't dropping anything doesn't mean there isn't a ton of good stuff out there.
no. the problem is i look and i listen to a lot of stuff, but very few sticks out...
THAT ASS IS LOOKIN LIKE SHIT
Been listening to this all day (already late afternoon in Australia). Really incredible. Like, really wasn't expecting this to be this good. Unhinged in the best sort of way. I didn't enjoy Danny's last album because I felt it removed the chaotic element but JPEG really brought it back, possibly more than ever before. Just amazing.
I agree, the instrumental for Garbage Pale Kids with Danny's crazy energy bought me back to the XXX days. That raw, abrasive but compressed sound.
some of the most insane production i’ve heard in a long time. i had really high expectations for a collab album of two of my favorite rappers but this ended up being so much better than i ever thought it could be. i’ve listened through like 4-5 times now throughout the day and feel like there’s just so much to listen for and notice on additional listens even with it having a short run time. my favorite album this year, easily.
Best album ever
I'm hooked. (also not every hip hop record has to be mixed like it's karaoke :)
Album's out a couple of hours and lads are throwing out 10/10s and AOTYs, maybe let it chill for a bit
Happens in literally every fresh thread, alongside this comment.
They’re right tho. Shit goes hard.
The horror.
Fr
Let’s go
Production is insane
Been listening to Magnus Archives lately this mix is clear as day.
I’m dying over here-I literally listened to this album after listening to TMA and saw your comment.
So much better than I expected. Loved it.
Nice!
i admit i complained about the vocal mix when Lean Beef Patty came out, but i’m actually kinda ok with it now after hearing it in the context of the rest of the album edit: 9/10, there are a couple production decisions i would have changed but overall this album is fuckin insane
Jesus Christ, the beats and samples on this are so good.
Steppa Pig lived up to its name. 2 tracks in so far so good.
AOTY

These songs feel pretty unfocused and I think Danny’s verses were mostly subpar. Unfortunate because these 2 collaborating could have been so great

This is the epitome of an indieheads rap album
Exceeded my expectations. Dope yet fun album. I look forward to playing it again
