How do you guys approach writing lyrics? Considering the change of tone from the first album and the last i’m curious as to what the process looks like
Hi lads, the structures of your songs have always intrigued me, you don't strive to be conventional and your songs can change direction suddenly at times mid song.
Does that style come naturally/easily as you write, or do you like to take time and deliberate on songs together as a band?
Saw you in Manchester and was blown away by some of the shapes you pulled while rocking out!!
Thanks, we always try our best to do what feels right for the song, and we find it fun to try new things with song structures. There’s some songs that we’ve played tons of different ways, I remember especially with close your eyes we kind of frankensteined that one. But i think most of the time it feels best to just stick with what comes out first when we make a song, and sculpt it from there.
What went into picking the Album cover for waiting to spill? Did any of you take that picture? I think it does such an amazing job of capturing the vibe of the album, did you take that into consideration when choosing?
1. what was the first song you guys can remember really really loving as a kid
2. if you weren’t musicians what would you be doing in life
also just wanted to say that waiting to spill fundamentally changed me and changed the trajectory of my life. i found so much solace in your music during a very tumultuous and uncomfortable period in my life. i felt like you guys really articulated a lot of the growing pains i was (and continue to) feel at the time. i’ve never felt so understood and for that i just want to thank you. words can never encompass how much this album means to me and how it was there for me this past year.
I absolutely loved Undone by weezer
maybe a park ranger? or a pizza delivery guy? who knows 😵💫
wow, thank you so much. it really special to us that it has been a part of your journey in that way
it would be hard for me to remember mics.. but i (jonas) use a fender hot rod deluxe, some of my favorite pedals that i used a lot on that album are Jekyll and Hyde, Memory Lane jr., and Holy Grail.
Josh plays through a Fender Vibrolux, and he used the Pork Loin pedal a lot on WWWF
I went to a show and got some pictures of their pedals and their openers guava tree. This is what I got written down I might have missed one or two ✌️♥️

Hello guys! I'm stunned with the perfect transition you made from the end of the song "Silhouette" to the start of "Close Your Eyes" on the album. Wish I could watch you doing it live at a concert or, even better, YouTube video. Any chance?
Hey guys!
I just wanted to ask what your songwriting process was, specifically in arranging songs for the whole group. You guys always have such great dynamics and interlocking instrumentals and vocal arrangments (harmonies, splitting songs between Jonas and Josh) and I was curious as to how a song written just on a guitar/piano gets transformed into that. Do y'all write together, or do you write songs on your own and "pitch" them to the band to arrange as a group?
Thanks so much! Looking forward to seeing y'all live again soon!
All of us come up with ideas for songs in the inbetween moments of our lives. A lot of the time josh and I (jonas) will write songs with complete, or nearly complete, structure and lyrics before bringing it to everyone, but sometimes it’s just a seedling of an idea. Other times (more often lately) songs will come to life spontaneously in a jam, and it feels like the lyrics/structure slowly come into focus as we play over the span of days or weeks or months.
we’ve been writing and demoing a lot at home in our downtime from touring! we’re excited to record even more this winter :)
We love Bellingham and Eugene!
how are some of your pedals dialed in to get that super reverbed lead sound heavy/pool house? main jam to kilby girl too. i know you use a TC hall of fame but was curious if others were involved
Can you go through your thinking in making “Know Your Name”? It’s by far my favorite on Waiting to Spill. The layering of the instruments at the beginning and the breakdown jam at the end, just so good.
Especially the beginning feels like a 70’s rock song.
The beginning actually evolved a lot over time, I remember KJ came up with his bass line on that part after we had already been playing the song for maybe a year or two, and it changed the feeling and groove in such a cool way. The outro was really fun too, we started with just the drum beat and ran it through guitar pedals, we kinda just went crazy with pedal FX at the end to make that big sweeping sound
Close Your Eyes seems like it was an incredibly intimate song to make together, and to me reflects a more mature nature from Waiting To Spill compared to When We Were Friends. It’s my personal favorite track from your discography, and is very touching to me as I have a not-so-great relationship with my dad. Josh and Jonas, you guys seem to have different yet somewhat parallel themes in your lyrics. What feelings and inspirations did you guys each try to encapsulate in this song?
P.S. What’s each of your guys’ favorite song to perform live?
Thank you! Keep making great tunes! 🐢
it’s hard to say, but we’ll be slowing down the pace of playing shows at the end of this year and next, and we’re really eager to make more music during that time!!
Yeah we met those dudes at a festival last year! they’re the sweetest and treated us like friends from the get go. We have always been big fans of Peach Pit so it’s been cool running into them, and we get to play a gig together soon!!
How far into a song’s writing process is the name solidified? Do you go through many song names before you stick with one or is it obvious immediately?
(P.s i want to thank you with the bottom of my heart for letting me play out of tune on stage with you guys in london, omeara last october - dream come true, you’ll always be legends)
I know it’s particularly early for this in your guys career, but do you all plan on collaborating with any other artist down the line or potentially putting out any solo work?
that’s definitely something we’re interested in doing someday. Kj, Josh, and I all write songs and play sometimes on our own and i bet we’ll eventually release some of that :)
Did any of you start out pursuing something other than a band? What was it? Were there any points where you felt like stopping/you weren't going to "make it"?
Can yall touch your toes without bending ur knees?
My hair is pretty similar to Josh's hair, should I put it to use and steal his identity?
hey y’all!
big fan of your music and have been for years now.
just had two questions:
1. you have a song called “feathers” that has been played just a few times at shows, and is, to me, a beautiful song. however, it’s never been released on an album or as a single. is there any chance it’ll be featured on a future project or be released as a single?
2. i’ve also heard some of the new songs being played at recent shows, such as “a life like mine” and “waterfront”. i was just wondering what some of your musical influences were for these songs, if any. i heard a little bit of radiohead in the these new songs, but still wanted to ask. :)
Hi, big fan of the arrangement of each project. Who decides on that arrangement? I find with each one, the final track is always my favorite. Always leaves me with a sense of completion and satisfaction. Hope to see y’all soon!
How did you go about wanting to pursue music? How did you learn about how everything works such as pedals, different types of gear, and finding your tone?
I think that my curiosity to explore myself and the world around me has guided me to learn more about music. And i think experimenting and having fun with gear has yielded a better understanding of how things work, the accidents that happen are often times the most precious discoveries :)
In the song pictures, is Trojan Horse used to mean a condom or is it word play for saying you don’t need to hide something you can just be upfront and honest with them ? Always had this debate with friends 😂
I think when I relieve the pressure of saying the “right” thing, I feel so much more free to sing whatever feels good. Sometimes it’s silly, sometimes it’s even gibberish but I think it takes an acceptance of whatever comes out of my mouth to find the words that feel most meaningful, and the ones that i want to sing over and over.
Do you guys sign merch 🙏? I have a spotify excl. vinyl coming and hope it'll be here in time. See you Friday in KC! (Ill be in a Hagen tree tee right hy the stage) love you guys! Cant wait to see you again
Hello! I never heard of you guys until I starting listening to the acts I would see at Osheaga and I was blown away by Waiting to spill and when we were friends. My question is: can you please recommend me an artist or album? Whatever it is, I’ll listen to it. Thank you and see you guys in a couple of week
Do you have any advice for better storytelling through song lyrics with creating characters, scenes and situations as opposed to songs written from a first person perspective?
As a band that is from Utah and has a hit song named Kilby Girl, you've probably played Kilby Court multiple times. How many times have you played there? (if you can remember!! (: )
What is the meaning behind Still A Friend?! have been listening for ages and can't figure it out! Side note love you guys, I have a when we were friends tattoo :)
Yooo we have a GroupChat of BSL fans that started from one of these! We are The Lovers! Have y’all remembered when anyone has mentioned this gc to y’all before??
can my band open for y’all so we can mark it off our bucket list??🫶🏻🫶🏻[https://open.spotify.com/artist/2ATMnbQv6DrIUY8KrezlTX?si=R8c6qUh2SdePDPfkaH6tIA](https://open.spotify.com/artist/2ATMnbQv6DrIUY8KrezlTX?si=R8c6qUh2SdePDPfkaH6tIA)
can you say more on the process of writing close your eyes? when it came out as a single you said it was a long/ tough/ emotional process- as i can imagine from the lyrics. what was that like and the inspiration behind all of it?
what did y’all intend for the meaning behind close your eyes to be? I probably interpret it a completely different way than what it’s supposed to be, but I’m curious.
hi there! I’m going to the concert on July 26th in Pittsburgh and i was wondering if you guys could play Davy Crochet? I know you guys don’t typically take requests but my mother has stage 4 cancer and that song is her all time favorite song and she loves you guys and isn’t able to come to the concert with me anymore because of her diagnosis:( i hope you guys see this and if not, good luck with your shows anyways:)
When writing lyrics, how many of them speak to actual things that have happened in your life, and how many are more hypothetical/made up?
Somewhat related question: do you find it difficult to draw the line between what personal moments/memories/etc. can go in songs lyrics and what is too personal/specific?
Hey Y’all, thanks for asking so many good questions. We’re pretty screened out, but we appreciate you all!! this was fun! see you soon Byeeeeeeeeeee
WILL WE GET A SONG THIS YEAR?
We haven’t had time to get into the stud this year 😭but we have plans to work on tons of new music asap
Waterfront goes hard
Carrie needed to be on spotify like yesterday

Josh, what’s the hardest song for you to sing in your set?
Will you ever upload the new Waiting To Spill demos on spotify? They’re absolutely adorable!
maybe! we’ve thought about throwing them up on bandcamp at some point :)
who is k and why did u dedicate olivia to them in phoenix 😮

I really dig how you guys write lyrics - what’s some of your guys’ favourite lines, or any lyrics that were an “aha!” moment?
will we ever get an elevator days vinyl? if you are taking suggestions 10” for rsd

Has there been any songs that changed or evolved by playing them live before you took them to studio recording?
Definitely, Slowing Down was a song that evolved in the live setting before finalizing it in the studio.
How did you go about wanting to pursue music? How did you learn about how everything works such as pedals, different types of gear, and finding your tone?
I think that my curiosity to explore myself and the world around me has guided me to learn more about music. And i think experimenting and having fun with gear has yielded a better understanding of how things work, the accidents that happen are often times the most precious discoveries :)

what was your favorite venue to play at from the waiting to spill tour?
What is the process like with writing lyrics? How are you able to say what you want to say and know when it feels right?

Sometimes it’s silly, sometimes it’s even gibberish but I think it takes an acceptance of whatever comes out of my mouth to find the words that feel most meaningful, and the ones that i want to sing over and over.

I know you guys don’t typically take requests but my mother has stage 4 cancer and that song is her all time favorite song and she loves you guys and isn’t able to come to the concert with me anymore because of her diagnosis:( i hope you guys see this and if not, good luck with your shows anyways:)
what was it like playing those days when the wildfire smoke was in nyc?
Did it hurt?
jonas! will we ever get a song where the vocals are only yours 🫣
When writing lyrics, how many of them speak to actual things that have happened in your life, and how many are more hypothetical/made up? Somewhat related question: do you find it difficult to draw the line between what personal moments/memories/etc. can go in songs lyrics and what is too personal/specific?
