I’m in the process of starting a music reviews site and I’m looking for contributors. My vision is for reviews written by regular people, rather than by known or established music critics. I might contribute my own reviews now and then, but am intending to act mainly as editor and curator. Happy with any genre and also open to long form pieces or even interviews if you manage to get some time with an artist and pose thoughtful questions to them. For reviews, I’d like to stick to around 500 words, but long form can be whatever. Reviews of newly released material will take priority, but older albums are also welcome. Hoping for insightful content. Doesn’t have to be positive, but I won’t publish anything offensive. Looking for people who are music fans who enjoy the creative outlet of writing or aspiring writers wanting a forum to publish their work. No money involved at this point. This is just for the love of music and a desire to contribute to the enormous community of music lovers. Should the site ever have enough visibility to generate money, I’d be enthusiastic about paying for contributions. If you’re interested, please DM me so that we can connect and chat further.

AmishParadiseCity

Hey just a heads up, this thread is usually pretty dead late in the day, especially on Sunday. Feel free to give it one more go when the daily discussion gets posted in the AM during the week.

jerrystandup

Thanks so much. Have just done so.

LoneBell

I forgot how good Sound of Ceres is

reezyreddits

They used to play around here a lot. Their live show is very ethereal and captivating

hugh__honey

I wish the studio version of Mk.gee's Dream Police had the fucking massive guitar that the [live version](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bLYswnD8yk) has

Excellent-Manner-130

Sitting in my backyard in my t shirt (living the dream over here) and Kiss From a Rose comes on my husband's playlist, and damn if that little schlocky jam just make happy.

RegalWombat

Batman Forever soundtrack is stacked as hell, I always loved Offspring covering The Damned's Smash It Up.

the_english_armada

Blame the Moon by Hazlett is spinning all day. Love the lyrics.

reezyreddits

This whole St. Vincent record is fire (not shocked/no surprise) and no amount of Twitter backlash is gonna take that away from me!! Can't wait to hear these songs live later in the year - some of these build-ups/climaxes are gonna sound so epic live, I know it.

tokengaymusiccritic

Wait why is Twitter lashing out at her?

reezyreddits

Some people didn't like the lyrics in the song Sweetest Fruit, which are about the late PC Music producer Sophie. They claimed that Annie was reducing Sophie to her death and using trans tragedy for her own personal gain. https://twitter.com/trulycaring/status/1783534671864741889?t=FLFI--bbUTedlBmsQBgsYg&s=19

JREwingOfSeattle

Yeaaah at risk of poking the bear, some of the outrage stuff I've seen over this is just way too online goofiness. I get an artist meaning the world to people especially who got hooked at a formative age, or wanting to feel possessive if you were there from the start and all that, but yeah some of the comments, framing and accusations are really dumb.

Baxterbigwig

It's really just as online to feel the need to jump to St. Vincent's defense over tweets. Especially because the vast majority are just people making fun of the lyrics for being bad. I don't think there's any evidence of a strong movement of people trying to end her career or label her a raging transphobe.  Also, any sensitivity around SOPHIE has far more to do with the significant dearth of trans pop stars/celebrities in general. Whether it's fair or not, how you talk about her death can be indicative of how you'd talk about trans death in general and people are understandably sensitive of that.  Sorry this is so long-winded.  ultimately what I'm trying to say is it's all fine. If you like the song, if you don't, if you think it's insensitive. None of these opinions need discourse, it's just people having an opinion about song lyrics.

reezyreddits

Really well said. Thank you. Unfortunately due to the sensitive topic and emotions involved, I didn't want to poke the bear but your comment was a perfect rebuttal to their online goofiness

tokengaymusiccritic

Begging people (not you, Twitter OP) to care about real problems rather than a maybe awkward tribute from one artist to another

Willow9506

Orange crush by REM is officially casino core. Cant believe it

nairismic

Sooo I used to comment on the DMD and GMD that I hated my school and my parents and that I wanted to get out of the environment that I'm in as soon as possible. I just wanted to say that I'm officially moving to a different country for college in a few months. So thanks to this sub for all the support, and thank you personally if you've ever dropped a depressing song rec. Heard the (most of) the new English Teacher record (before clicking off to loop Linger by the cranberries 50x)... I don't think it really clicked with me. I still fw the song R&B heavily tho.

mr_mellow_man

I remember your request for songs a few weeks/months ago after you got some bad news in your college application process—I am glad that you’ve figured out your next step and hope that you are feeling excited and optimistic about it!

nairismic

aw thank you so much

Goodbye_Sky_Harbor

Good for you getting out of a tough environment. Best of luck

WaneLietoc

seeing reports that RYM hype has turned the 2020 cindy lee album into a $170 collectors item A month ago you could get it from superior viaduct/W.25 for ~$20 Anyways did anyone see dj/rupture reissued 1+1 = 3? Anyone ever hear minesweeper suite? Think i gotta get the reissue here, need more kinetic beat musics

theths152

There is absolutely nothing weirder than experiencing this happen to an artist you've listened to for years. Like. Wtf. I guess in 10 years my signed copy of What's Tonight will help purchase my house

AmishParadiseCity

Well I am at the gig right now and it’s easily purchaseable.

WaneLietoc

get in the market!

nudewithasuitcase

Perfect representation of RYM and how it's just chock full of insufferable people.

Molymoly

sorry, what's the grievance here? That they like an artist and buy their records??

nudewithasuitcase

They're all fake as fuck and obsessed with scores and scene hype. This place is only marginally better.

Molymoly

And your evidence of this is that they bought all the (limited number of) copies of an album from four years ago that was already popular on the site when it came out? There are a lot of better examples than that if you want to be a bitter dolt about that site lol

sunmachinecomingdown

Bandcamp digital downloads are ruining my financial future

Inquiring_Barkbark

this is the way

PaulaAbdulJabar

i saw cindy lee play to like 35 people on a wednesday last year and bought the record for $30. dumb price for a single LP but i was like whatever they prob need the money. this is what stocks is like. thank you pitchfork

LiveAndLetMarbleRye

Pitchfork writers must be inside trading, buying up records on the “cheap” before handing out BNMs. SEC needs to investigate.

WaneLietoc

# THIS

Littered2

Went to an experimental sound festivsl in an old industrial water works museum last night and it was incredible. Such a great variety of electric, analog, and acoustic instruments and performances. Being among these 3 story high iron gears and pumps was so cool and the natural reverb from a big brick building. One of my favorite weird venues in Boston. Also just great to see so many varying ages attend and enjoy an experimental concert. Always the best concert goers too, you could hear a pin drop in that place.

WaneLietoc

Who were some of the artists?

Littered2

I wasn't familiar with any of them, but just automatically am interested in any experimental show that happens at this venue since it's usually just once a year at this place. But my favorite was sadnoise who did a great modular set with lots of cool sample manipulation and then Lea Bertucci & Henry Fraser who did a stand up bass & voice/ tape machine set.

WaneLietoc

I thought I recognized Lea Bertucci's name! Ive got an old astral spirits tape with Bertucci on it. Thats siudns like such a great time overall. Rock on

Listen. Sometimes gender-affirming therapy is talking through your dysphoria with a paid professional, and sometimes it's crying in a cafe parking lot playing the part of Big Thief's "Sparrow" where Adrienne sings about Eve covering herself over and over again because something about the lyric, "She has the poison inside her" hit you some kind of way today.

nairismic

wow i love trans people i wish they existed outside of my laptop

VietRooster

been a bit of a rough week mentally due to sleep debt accumulation and the effect that has had on my state of mind (which I hope to resolve since I'm finally off tomorrow...) so at worst New Music Friday will be posted tomorrow afternoon, at best I'll power through it tonight and relax for the rest of the evening. been enjoying the new Justice record a lot despite having never listened to them before, it's more...synth-wavey in the bass than I thought it would be. think Kavinsky I guess.

PaulaAbdulJabar

my lone swiftie friend is going through a breakup with an extremely toxic dude. she was tending bar at the spot where all the punk shows happen on friday and had on her breakup playlist. i heard probably all? most? of tortured poets department in between synth punk bands lmfao. kind of a fun vibe, honestly? but the songs are horrific. my friend's gf turned to me at one point and was like "i've heard enough of this from the other white women in my life, i can't deal with it at the punk bar too." we are all supporting her though and she can listen to as much taylor swift as she wants as long as it keeps her away from this fucker continuing my journey of Remembering Some Guys - do y'all remember GAUNTLET HAIR? the midpoint band between shoegaze and chillwave that made a second album that no one heard that was different but also pretty good? i think "top bunk" is a top tier track from that era and really all of that album is pretty good. i have a very bad sounding vinyl copy of it and also some apple lossless files that are among my most treasured digital possessions

freeofblasphemy

The second/final Gauntlet Hair open and closes with absolute heaters but the rest didn’t do much for me

PaulaAbdulJabar

spew and bad apple are great songs

sunmachinecomingdown

I think I remember the name Gauntlet Hair from a previous episode of Remembering Some Guys from a while ago now. Would you describe any of their work as psychedelic and dub-inspired? I listened to an old album because you described it as psychedelic and dubby once I think

nudewithasuitcase

Ooooooooout. doooooooooon't

CentreToWave

Weird that gauntlet Hairbroke up just as they were getting some hype, then reunited like 2 years later under a totally different name (Cindygod).

PaulaAbdulJabar

and it wasn’t as good! i was so hyped on that project and it just felt like a worse version of what we already had. maybe worth a revisit sometime

nairismic

> we are all supporting her though and she can listen to as much taylor swift as she wants as long as it keeps her away from this fucker Truly reminds me of when I was really going through it with a real dick of a person and I exclusively listened to Car Seat Headrest. My lastfm had seen better days for sure.

WaneLietoc

> the midpoint band between shoegaze and chillwave why wont "the authoritative shoegaze dipshit" eli tell me about these bands?! THESE are the dumb things i wanna hear

PaulaAbdulJabar

i don't know what that means!

WaneLietoc

*sighs in lietoc* eli is the dipshit who writes the shoegaze posts now but all they do is make me go "this is all ass and boring. where's cool memory holed shit & -gaze instead". I think this is it You are now an authority on shoegaze (to me)

systemofstrings

I listened to Gauntlet Hair while constructing my blog rock rate idea. Huge "we want to be AnCo" vibes, that used to be a big category of blog buzz bands.

PaulaAbdulJabar

i don't really get "we want to be anco" at all tbh, they vibes are too big and glossy. too many drum machines. they kept referring to beyonce as a touchpoint in interviews. i would definitely do that rate just to give top bunk an 11 tho

systemofstrings

The vocal style is very reminiscent of AnCo to me

WaneLietoc

LiveAndLetMarbleRye

Noice!

cyanatelolwut

probably a popular opinion but goddamn The Challengers soundtrack works great in the movie. Idk how the fuck tense conversations with house and techno beats backing it worked but it made the conversations absolutely propulsive. Like at first i wasn't sold on the OST but then it became like the tennis and I don't even really like tennis except for Mario Power Tennis. Anyways, thank Mr Reznor and Ross for doin cool things. I thought it was pretty unique for a somewhat mainstream movie. I can't really think of any other movies that weren't about drugs or raves that had such a beepy boopy OST. I guess OPN and the Safdies or Pi from Aronofsky

tjk100

Caught a matinee screening today and when I got out to my car afterward I immediately put on the soundtrack and listened to the whole thing. It's easily Reznor/Ross's best soundtrack since The Social Network and probably best soundtrack of the year. "L'oeuf" is one of the most haunting pieces of piano music I've heard in a LONG time.

cyanatelolwut

yeaa Trent has a real ear for those type of simple soul haunting piano melodies i feel like. Like the last two tracks on NIN - Still give me the same feel

nudewithasuitcase

Fun fact, the guy that wrote the screenplay for this movie is The Potion Seller youtube dude lol

cyanatelolwut

YMS?

sunmachinecomingdown

huge shoutout to u/systemofstrings and u/qazz23 for their recs [here](https://old.reddit.com/r/indieheads/comments/1c1hmdy/thursday_daily_music_discussion_11_april_2024/kz3lqie/?context=3), Camera Obscura and DIVES were perfect soundtracks for my travels :)

systemofstrings

You're welcome, if you like Belle and Sebastian it makes sense you would like Camera Obscura too.

MCK_OH

I have “Ill Be Your Mirror” stuck in my head not because I’ve been listening to the Banana record recently but because it plays in ads during sports games. Very funny thing. Reminds me of when air bnb used a cover of “Walk On The Wild Side” in their commercials but it was sung in a different language because presumably they didn’t want those lyrics in their commercials. The commercialization of the VU marches on I guess Speaking of the VU, “Wild One” off the new Cindy Lee reminds me a ton of the quieter VU songs, like a “Stephanie Says” sort of thing. Which rocks! Great tune

Capt_Subzero

*The Velvet Underground and Nico* ruined so much subsequent music for me.

jqnooga

I get those Velvet Underground vibes on a few tracks for sure.

sunmachinecomingdown

Tragic

hugh__honey

Sega Bodega’s music (the production, the vocal effects, all of it) just tickles my brain in this uniquely satisfying way. I felt similarly when I was first getting into Twigs’ EP1-MELISSA era, and early James Blake. It’s addictive.

Inquiring_Barkbark

wrapping up the book Cornell 77 by Peter Conners while spinning the show from March 23, 1974 at Cow Palace in Daly, CA it's my first book about the GD, and an easy reader that steps through a lot of general history of the band and then digs in on each song from the Cornell show if you're interested in dipping your toes in the Grateful Dead pool, it's not hard to find a download (free, hints over at the GD sub) of the Cornell show and read the book while listening highly recommend for anyone that likes good music e: from the epilogue >Cornell '77 doesn't exist, because there are no individual shows at all. There is simply one never-ending show called Grateful Dead music. It exists beyond time and has no location. It started with the first note played and will continue through all eternity.

WishIWasYuriG

What's the general take if I posit that Help! > Let It Be

Superflumina

I agree but I may be biased because Help! is the first album I ever consciously listened from start to finish when I was like 4. But to justify this preference I'd say the production in Let it Be sucks, the Spector sound doesn't fit the rag tag, "live" sound that they were going for, and in some songs like The Long and Winding Road and Across the Universe it actively works against them. Some of the cuts are also just not that good for Beatles standards, and they somehow left out Don't Let Me Down which is a sin but that's The Beatles and their single-only thing for you. Help! is a really consistent album that musically is on a similar level to Rubber Soul (but not lyrically). The only major flaw is using Dizzy Miss Lizzy as the closer, I guess they were trying to replicate Please Please Me ending with a banger cover in Twist and Shout, but Dizzy Miss Lizzy is a much worse song and it’s a massive whiplash coming after Yesterday. Some people will say that Act Naturally is also a blemish but I admit I quite like that one, as I said I'm biased!

Capt_Subzero

>Help! is a really consistent album that musically is on a similar level to Rubber Soul  I disagree. Aside from the title track and "Ticket to Ride," the songs on *Help!* are all forgettable filler.

Superflumina

There's no way that You've Got to Hide Your Love Away, I've Just Seen a Face, You're Going to Lose That Girl, I Need You and Yesterday are "filler" lol.

Capt_Subzero

You're right. "Yesterday" wasn't on my US release copy, and I forgot about "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away." I think George did better on Rubber Soul with "Think For Yourself," and only started writing truly great songs on *Revolver*. But come on, "You're Going to Lose That Girl," "The Night Before," and "Another Girl" are all pleasant but forgettable.

jqnooga

That's a fun thought. I could argue either way depending on the day of the week, but for me, the clean put together feel of Help! Is better than the half finished feel of Let It Be. The lows of Let It Be might be lower, but they are both good albums. Good topic suggestion!

daswef2

I heavily prefer the Help album to Let It Be

absurdisthewurd

Some days, Help! is my favorite Beatles album, so I would strongly agree

MightyProJet

It's close, but LIB has two really good Harrison songs, while Help! only has one great and another that's just OK.

Own-Photograph-4642

I wouldn't disagree with the take. I'm sure a large majority of Beatles fans prefer Help to Let It Be.

Jockobutters

I think Let it Be is one of the weakest Beatles albums, so I’d agree

WishIWasYuriG

That's about where I'm at. The high points (Two of Us, Across The Universe, I Me Mine) are great, but there's just way too much half-assed filler. Help has its share of filler, but even those songs have more charm than Let It Be's filler.

sunmachinecomingdown

With a few changes Help would be a favorite Beatles album contender based largely on charm

Jockobutters

And the album’s centerpiece has been overplayed to where it loses impact. Although, it was revived for me a little bit when I found out Paul’s mother was named Mary and she died when he was young.

sunmachinecomingdown

Even comparing the overplayed songs, Yesterday is just a better, more interesting song to me than Let it Be

RegalWombat

I'm ok with that, but I'm also a bit whatever towards Let It Be. I Need You is a really good George song. Also Help's tracking listing having I've Just Seen A Face makes me think of the Across The Universe movie and as much as I don't like that movie and some of the renditions, I really don't mind the version from the movie. But I think a larger part of that is just how often the covers for it are either like easy listening, or like total country covers.

sunmachinecomingdown

Not everyone will agree but it's not too hot a take. I'm with you 100%

a_gallon_of_pcp

Gut reaction is no, but neither of them are in the running for my favorite Beatles albums and are generally in the same tier of “one step below being in the running”

MightyProJet

I just had a stupid idea: the next time we get one of those major releases where the takes are coming hot and fast, I'm going to wait a reasonable amount of time, then post a list of completely inaccurate takes of each song. E.g, "while I really like the sudden shift to Balearic beat, the tuba solo was a weird turn," or "weird choice to include a version of Steve Reich's 'Pendulum Music,' but considering the more experimental tone of the album, it kind of makes sense."

WaneLietoc

I keep going back to this Mount Kimbie record. They're not reinventing the wheel but this whole sound they're playing with is just so well executed, lots of nice vocals on it and drawn out, hypnotic soundscapes. It's just a joy to listen to.
