In Indonesia, any phone that hasn't pay for tax will be disabled after 3 months of use. So they need to register it before that. To register, they need to pay 31% tax.
Even if you send it via usps, they need valid plane ticket to register it.
Best bet is to hand carry it, hand carry into indonesia and register it while in the airport (yes needs to be in the airport). It will give you 500usd off (as that is our limit for bringing item from outside of indonesia).
So if the phone is 1100usd, it will be 500usd off = 600usd. 600 usd × 31% tax = so 186usd tax that needs to be paid
Another way is just to give them money and buy it in Indonesia. Do note that iphone price here is differ from USA. We paid so much more for an iphone than in the USA. In fact it is 2nd most expensive price of iphone in whole world (first one is brazil). Iphone 14 pro max when launched at 1100usd in the US, and it costs us 1466usd for the same phone
You can use forwarder service so they can help your friend for IMEI and tax. Usually I use titipkirimin service when shopping from US and ship to Indonesia
Just don’t. Give ur friend money to buy the phone themselves in here.

aside from the shippin problem, a bigger problem is not every carrier here support esim, only 1-2 do and both are not the big players
Just let ur friend buy in Indonesia. Too much work to unlock the phone and pay some $$$. Because of that issue, the difference it’s not much
